This in-depth and comprehensive investigation describes how “revolutionary” Cuba essentially occupied Venezuela not through a large military force in-situ but asymmetrically, by placing assets strategically to command Venezuela’ security forces, economy, information, communications, and society in general. It explores the evolution of a long-held plan that led to a radical political alliance and regional integration project and the establishment of an international criminal network. Finally, it explains how the much smaller, poorer, and underdeveloped Cuba pulled this off thanks to a unique methodological tool kit arisen from the totalitarian nature of its system. The implications are far from regional.
I would say this book is incredibly eye opening and has a lot of important information on the relationship between Venezuela and Cuba. However, there were definitely a few times where I saw things mentioned that seemed pretty extreme or pretty light on evidence. The book is marked up extensively with sources but it’s up to the read to go through them and somehow some of them just have an abbreviation. Which I’m not sure what even meant. But aside from a few things that might be taken with a grain of salt the overall picture is made very clear with this book - Cuba is heavily involved with Venezuela and most people have no idea about how extensive it is. Give it a read and you’ll never look at Cuba the same again.
