Continuing with the “dead friend left a clause in his will that his friends have to live in his cabin for a month” schtick, we continue with Luke Barton. It’s actually not his month since he agreed to switch months with his identical twin brother...the one he grumbles about being evil and with whom apparently has a huge rivalry. There’s some lamenting of a great relationship lost after his brother, Matthias, cheated him in business and betrayed him, but also a lot of bitterness that Matthias always gets the best. In walks Lauren Conover who introduces herself as Matthias’s fiance and mistakes him for Matthias - he doesn’t correct her. Through conversation, Matthias learns that Lauren and Matthias are engaged through her father’s business deal...and Luke is envious of the business connection. He doesn’t realize that she’s there to break off the engagement, so he ups the seduction factor (very easy with all that chemistry) and romances her a bit, but there’s not much malice in it quite yet. And Lauren doesn’t get the hell out of dodge because she thinks, maybe her parents actually picked a good one and she’s wrong to want to call it off. It isn’t until Luke learns that his brother switched months with him so that he could go off and woo Luke’s potential client that Luke turns pretty nasty. He decides that he’ll take something of his brother’s as well and deliberately tries to seduce Lauren as Matthias. Well, this goes on a week with Luke being the king of compartmentalization and seriously putting off any guilty feelings or worrying about the future and the two of them more or less falling in love. Lauren’s thinking she’s finally found the man of her dreams and isn’t it great they’re already engaged. Then Matthias shows up....

Whew. This was some soap opera-ish angst. It’s even got an evil twin switcheroo plot (not that either twin is actually evil, but Luke has some serious moral flexibility). Part of me wanted to shake Lauren for not processing the clues that this might not be Matthias...I mean, she’s seen the photos of them so she knows they’re identical, she’s gotten the reminder from her sister that Matthias sucks with electronics and Luke clearly doesn’t, she’s even caught Luke speaking about himself “as Luke” when recounting stories about him and Matthias...not to mention the difference in chemistry between them all of a sudden. But this can all be forgiven because Luke’s deception was majorly awful. I appreciated the fact that he is contrite and fully realizes that what he did was shitty and dishonest. He owns his own actions, feels awful about hurting Lauren and doesn’t run around making excuses for himself. But I have to remind myself, he lied to a woman about who he was and seduced her into bed so that he could have something of his brother’s. Those are not the actions of a hero and that man needs some serious therapy. It wasn’t an accident or something he couldn’t get himself out of after he changes his mind, no he went into it fully knowing what he was doing and knowing he should feel guilty about it. Given the depth of his duplicity, I wanted him to suffer just a bit more and for him to really work at improving himself so he could win Lauren back. She took him back instantly. So that part was a bit less rewarding than I wanted. But I did find it pretty entertaining to read, my eyes widening as you wonder if he’s going to really do it...and then he does. And then just waiting for the landslide as Lauren inevitably discovers what he’s done. I also don’t have a lot of faith that Luke and Matthias can repair their relationship given their upbringing and Luke’s ingrained distrust. But I’ll be optimistic and see in Matthias’s story.

Éxito y venganza

Protagonistas: Luke Barton y Lauren Conover
Argumento:

Can we say Fantasy Girl come to life!! Luke finds himself having to take his month at Hunter's cabin earlier than anticipated, but it was starting to look up when at his front door is his walking, talking Fantasy girl. Only problem with Lauren is that she is his estranged twin brother's fiancee, and she thinks he is Matt.

Lauren came to the cabin to break off her arranged engagement to a man she barely knows, but when she arrives she is feeling thins for this man that she has never felt before. He has a way of setting her body on fire with just one look. Where did that come from? Now she isn't sure of her decision to break off the engagement. Maybe her parents picked the perfect man for her after all.

I have to say, aside from the abrupt ending, I really enjoyed the build up of the relationship between Luke and Lauren. You can't hate Luke for deceiving Lauren, because she felt the heat too, and she deserved to finally have the intimacy that she had been searching for with her other fiancee's.

Christie gives us some HOTT love makin and some very sexy naked male in a hot tub....ummm HELLO....who wouldn't want that!!

Its a quick read, with some smokin hot sexual tension and a romance between two lost souls!! Liked it a lot!! But I always like reading Christie's books.

Okay, this was disappointing.

I understand that this was one of those set pieces where the editors at Silhouette came up with a lame idea about rich college buddies who each have to stay in a house for one month. So this isn't entirely Christie's fault. A gal can only do so much with a setup as dumb as this.

But the evil twin plot was really horrid. Very Lame.
