Mine is a very strange business. I specialize in the discovery and disclosure of stories considered far too outlandish for traditional publication. It has been my life’s work to seek out narratives of a phantasmal or fantastic nature. This book contains some of the more unusual accounts that I have collected over the years. You will find horror between these pages, certainly, but there is something else as well, something far hope. The purpose of this book is not to frighten but to hearten. There are those of us who battle against the great darkness of this world, but we are few, like candles in the abyss, so I seek to inspire more to action. Our work is difficult but our motto is simple… Do Good. Fight Evil. Repeat.
J.P. Leck is the architect of The Endless Elsewhere, a vast, multimedia narrative, which consists of novels, short stories, short films, radio plays, comic books and a podcast. Some installments occur in the distant past, while many do so in our own present, and still others are set in the far-off future, yet all of it belongs to one vast, interconnected story. This is a saga of the phantasmal and the fantastic, of the weird and the wondrous, of a great darkness and a greater light that overcomes it.
If you've already read all of J.P. Leck's short stories, this anthology will tell you little you don't already know as it essentially collects all those tales in a single volume. For the completist, however (and I am certainly one of those), Leck has made minor edits to some of these stories since their original publication to help the overall flow of the meta-narrative. He has also included a new and previously unreleased postscript, detailing the life of the Circle City Collector in relation to the larger events in the Endless Elsewhere.
If you haven't yet read Leck's short stories, then you're in for a treat! These stories provide the glue, the backstories, the deep lore of the Endless Elsewhere and help to answer questions brought to light in some of Leck's other works. Why does the creature in THE POLLYDORES hate Howard Tetrick? Read THE FOUNDLING. Don't know why Carolyn isn't possessed anymore? Read THE DEMONIAC. Want to know thre history behind Dr. Hardesty's mad inventions? Check out THE MUSIC BOX and THE THIN PLACE. Other stories detail how Violet met the True Welievers, how Sorrells is handling life after THE COLONNADES, and just what all of this story seems to be building toward! It's a fantastic set of stories and you're in for a great time!
If you are a horror fan... no, make that a fan of speculative fiction - you'll enjoy this collection of short stories by J. P. Leck.
One unique thing is that these stories are all connected, and there are also a couple of connections (especially in the last story) to Leck's trilogy of novels (all of which I highly recommend). It also is entertaining having a narrator give a prologue and an epilogue to the book and to each story.
I will admit that genre wise (both horror and short story collections) are not my preferred literary selection. But Leck is such a good storyteller I enjoyed this collection.
