Jean Reagan lives in Salt Lake City, Utah with her husband, Peter, and daughter, Jane. Their beloved son and brother, John, died in 2005. Born in Alabama, Jean spent most of her childhood in Japan. Since graduating from Earlham College, she has worked as a community organizer, a union activist, and a writer. She cherishes her years as a full-time mother when she also worked at her children's public school, The Open Classroom. In the summers, her family lives in a tiny, remote cabin in Grand Teton National Park where she and Peter serve as volunteer backcountry rangers. Bears visit them frequently.
This is an entertaining, well-written, beautifully illustrated children's book. It is perfect for grandpas to read with their grandchildren, or for anyone who has ever enjoyed spending time with his or her grandfather.
This is a very cute book that we bought our grand-daughter for her birthday. The look on her face when she read the title was precious and she giggled as she read it. I can see this one becoming a favorite. I'm sure my husband will get even with me by getting the "How to Babysit a Grandma" book next.
A young boy narrates this hilarious how-to guide for babysitting grandpas, offering advice on everything from the all-important greeting - to be given after hiding, and then jumping out when the grandpa gives up looking - to the cleanup process necessary, after a visit together. The many activities that grandpas enjoy - eating plenty of snacks, playing games of make-believe, taking naps with the cat - are covered, as is the proper way of saying goodbye.
An entertaining tongue-in-cheek look at the loving relationship between a young boy and his grandfather, How to Babysit a Grandpa addresses an experience familiar to many children - that of being looked after by a babysitter, particularly a grandparent - but turns the usual dynamic on its head. Younger children will appreciate the "authority" given to the boy in this story, older kids will enjoy the humor, and adults will see the love that grandpa shows, by putting his grandson in charge. The colorful artwork by Lee Wildish accentuates the humor and sense of fun in the story. All in all, a sweet little book, one I would recommend to readers looking for humorous children's stories featuring the grandparent/grandchild relationship.
Probably a better book for home than school but a whimsical fun book about a boy and his grandpa and what they like to do together. Nice book for inter-generational themes. Written in part as a set of tips which could be a good mentor text for writing similar texts.
Fantastic, sweet & charming book that I am sure every Grandfather in the world would love to read with their grandkids. I can absolutely picture some kids who believe that they are in charge!
How to Babysit a Grandpa is a children's picture book written by Jean Reagan and illustrated by Lee Wildish, which tells a story about points and tips on how to babysit one's grandfather. Today is Grandparents' Day (9 September 2018) – at least it is in my part of the world, so I thought it would be apropos to read this book.
Reagan's text is rather simple and straightforward. It is a story about how to entertain one's grandfather when he comes over to babysit you or rather you babysit him. It is a humorous tale that begins by grandfather coming by to be babysat and ends when he leaves to return home. Wildish's illustrations are wonderful and whimsical and depict the text rather well.
The premise of the book is rather straightforward. It tells how to babysit one's grandfather told from a little boy. It ventures from coming by to be babysat and the many activities one could do to entertain one's grandfather, and finally how one says good-bye to a grandfather with a promise to return to babysit him again. Each section of the book has several tongue-in-cheek advice that grandchildren could help babysit their grandfathers.
All in all, How to Babysit a Grandpa is a wonderful quaint children's book on how to babysit one's grandfather and how to keep him entertained when he comes over to be babysat.
"Babysitting a Grandpa is fun-- if you know how." When Grandpa rings the doorbell, what should you do? HIDE!" This fun books describes all the important points for babysitting Grandpas. "How to" tips include stay quiet like pretending to be a shark waiting for dinner, appropriate snacks for Grandpa such as "anything dipped in ketchup" and how to entertain a grandpa by putting on a scary play, somersaulting across the room and showing off your muscles. Finally, "how to say goodbye to a Grandpa" by giving him a picture for his fridge, give him a hug and a kiss and ask when can you babysit him again." What an enjoyable book that children and adults will love. 4 stars only because there are no diverse characters, but could be used with all ages as a mentor text as well.
another cute little refreshing book and about me, a Grandpa. I liked some of the ideas of how to have fun w/grandchild. Josiah, my Grandson, could offer some interesting ideas as well as other grandchildren of those who read or watch their grandchildren. Refreshing. Read at Barnes and Nobles while going back in time to previous books read as a youngester. I have pictures of sitting on my Grandfathers lap, "Pap!", however I don't remember him reading much. He was a very good Jeopardy player. :0)
This is such a heartwarming book. A little boy gives instructions on how to babysit a grandpa with treats and entertainment. They go on a walk together, play games, and even clean up before the little boy's parents get home. I loved the reverse role of the little boy taking care of the grandpa instead of the grandpa taking care of the little boy. The illustrations are fun and full of detail of the day’s adventure together. What a great book to celebrate grandparents with, there is also another companion book written “How to Babysit A Grandma” making these a great duo.
This book is ADORABLE! I love how the little boys gives instructions on how to take care of grandpa. I loved the illustrates and the way that the roles have changed. There are many books about parents taking care of the children or siblings raising their siblings, but there aren’t enough of children taking care of the adult. They way he talks about the walks they go on and the way that they play is just beautiful. I never had a relationship with my grandparents like this and its amazing to read about someone else experience.
This is exactly what every kid needs to know before taking on the job of babysitting grandpa. It is chock-filled with advice on how to hide and stay quiet (pretend you're a shark waiting for lunch) to entertaining the big guy (put on a scary play) to saying goodbye (give him a picture you've drawn and lots of hugs and kisses). I can't wait to give this one to my nephew on our birthday celebration during vacation.
My 2 and 1/2 year old grandson gave this to me as a Christmas present with a little help from my daughter. A cute read that had me laughing out loud. I loved some of the lines including the grandchild's response when PaPa (my grandson's name for me) rings the doorbell, which is to, "Hide!" Other lines I identified with (my grandson must have read the book before giving it to me) including snacks for PaPa and how to entertain me.
How to Babysit a Grandpa is exactly what it sounds like: a handy, dandy how-to guide for surviving an afternoon with those need-to-be-kept-busy charges. Survival tips include such important areas as snacks, what to do on walks, how to entertain, and how to wake sleeping grandpas. The childlike perspective is both humorous and, in the end, touching.
From two reflective teachers How to Babysit a Grandpa by Jean Reagan would be a great mentor text for students learning to write "All About" or "How to" books, since there are instructions and bulleted lists on almost every page. This book is another resource for teaching students that sometimes they have more in their bag of writing topics than they think they do!
Very cute book with good illustrations. I think young children will enjoy finding out all the things they can do to keep grandpa busy while Mom and Dad are away. I think it would be reassuring for a child who might have some anxiety in a very playful way.
Picked up this little ditty at Walmart for Father’s Day for Tim and as a welcome gift for new grand-Maddox Jolene!! It’s an adorable story and I hope Tim enjoys reading it to all the grands for years to come!! Cute and fun!
Cute picture book written from the perspective of a little boy who’s grandpa comes over when the little boy’s parents go out so that the little boy can “babysit” grandpa.
This was cute, but not quite as cute as the Grandma book. I still really enjoyed it and hope that my future father-in-law and my niece will enjoy reading it together.
I will always count the random board books I impulse buy towards my reading goals. Not sure whether to make this a gift for my dad or my nieces. Just cute.
Got this as a gift from the grandkids. The inside flyleaf had each one’s hand print with a signature inside. They huddled around me while I read it to them. The book was great too.
