Titania Academy #1

Faerie Misborn

Rate this book
Called into the headmistress's office on the first day.
Wonderful.
--------------

Freezing cold winters, constant hunger: This was the life of a homeless orphan. This was my life. Then I got the letter.

I've been on the streets since I was born. It got very rough after my aunt got sick and died. But I made do.
The streets of New York city can very unforgiving, especially when times get desperate. Like in winter.
At least I never had to worry about the cold.
But then I got hurt. Things were looking very bad.
Then Chance showed up with the letter.
The letter that said I was misborn of the fae. A bastard, but the magic still counted.
The letter that said I'd been accepted into Titania Academy.

When the magic blood of the fae runs through your veins, they will find you, no matter what.

~ ~ ~

So I get to the school. The Faerie Academy Chance said was soooo great. And before I even step one toe on the ground, these girls are doing double takes and giggling behind their backs at me and I just want to plant my fist in their faces.

Then I get upstairs to my dorm room and find some Barbie doll is bullying a girl.
Then she mouths off at me, giving me attitude.

Well, that was it. I couldn't hold back.
I punched her. Yeah, I did it.

Called into the headmistress's office on the first day.
Wonderful.

So, this book was really bad. Below is a list of things that went wrong:
1. There was absolutely NO world building.
2. The magic system was never explained.
3. The characters had literally no motivation.
4. The villains were obvious and had no reason to do the things they did.
5. The main character was an idiot.
6. All of the characters were one dimensional.
7. The plot was slow and obvious.
8. The relationships formed way too quickly.
9. The main character never went after things for herself and instead waited to be told what to do (girl, you had a library, figure stuff out).
10. There were a ton of grammatical errors.
11. The ending was anti-climatic.
12. There was a random chapter that served absolutely no purpose.
13. The main character was treated like an object AND SHE WAS FINE WITH THAT.
14. The dialog was robotic.
15. The reader was supposed to be shocked when the girl the main character punched in the face retaliated.
16. Important (obvious) information was kept from the main character for her 'protection' by her friends and everyone around her, and she was cool with it.
17. Though the story took place at a school, the characters never attend class. Or did homework.
18. This magical school (for ages 14-22) had lights out at nine.
19. The main character and her friend group was never punished for breaking school rules.
20. Nothing bad happened to them, so there were no stakes.

All in all, the only good thing about this novel was that it was fun to make fun of. My rant is finished.

A note about this review-I knew immediately that the target audience for this story is most likely young tween/teen girls. I read with that in mind, as if evaluating.
This story is cute and simple, albeit, too simplistic. In my opinion, the narrative structure needs some bulk added because it felt thin and loose-just more of the how, why, what, etc. about how Holly survived and struggled, the choices her aunt makes, how she learns to function in society and in the classroom. Details are missing, sparse or thin. It seemed like I was reading an overview. I was waiting for the dive into the more serious stuff, but that didn't happen. Holly is a good character with a lot of potential to be a role model of sorts, but, again, I need to know more about who she was, who she is and where she is going now. Teen girls will enjoy the story I think, but they can handle much more complex ideas. Word choice, etc. should challenge their minds to stop and consider instead of just leading them through the story. Honestly, this is a delightful entertaining read that needs a touch here and there to make it all it should be.

Another book that I feel should be marketed to younger readers. Felt very juvenile. It was in my recommendations and I have no idea how it fit with other fantasy genre books. It reads MUCH younger than what you expect. Also, the place in time feels weird. With the vocab used by the main character, I was expecting this to take place in the 1920's, but it is modern times. I couldn't get through the whole book. This may be a book that should be geared for middle schoolers.

Good Story Line - Easy to Read

The main characters background was very well developed. Interesting way to introduce the fae heritage of the main character. Hoping that the romance introduced will evolve to more than one love interest but that's just my love for reverse harems.

2.5ish stars. I think that I may be a little over the age of this target audience. If I'm honest, I kept waiting for a "time skip" to when our FMC is 18 or something so we could really get the story started. Unfortunately it just kept going with the 13 yo FMC who is both mature and at the same time seems really naive and immature... It was disconcerting to say the least. After the experiences the FMC has had at such a young age you would think she would be.. more advanced than the story allows her to be (if that makes sense.) I feel like she could have been way more rounded with a wider range of emotions etc that you would expect from an early teen if the author had allowed for it. As it was it was like the characters were all confined by the simplistic writing style of the author and not allowed out of their lanes.

I will say, as for world building, this is a really interesting world with some very interesting scenes.. however not very realistic and some times hard to picture what the author is describing really. For instance the story about her mother and father kissing in a fairy circle and then her mother somehow experiencing immaculate conception.. I totally understand for a younger audience but within the brief time frame of the tale things just didn't add up. I do think that some of the scenes are incredibly imaginative, however the whole story just needed a little better flow.. and honestly I have a 13 year old.. she doesn't act anything like this FMC who comes across more like a quiet 8 year old really..

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that some of the younger audience members may enjoy the simplicity of all this, including the dialogue but this isn't a story that is going to transcend and still be great across all audiences. I don't think the series is for me.

I found it fun to read. I'm hardly the target audience being a more than adult male, but looking at this as what it is, a YA, or even a more advanced middle-grade reader novel, it has pretty much everything you need. Yes, it's not perfect, but it was a nice ride, and I found myself wanting to know where it goes next. If you have a young reader who's into fantasy, I think you would do well to introduce them to this one.

No for me

Not good. Very childish writing skills, matter fact I'm pretty sure a child actually wrote this. this book is a wanna be Harry potter but with fae instead. Nothing in this read made me take it serious. After hearing she was a fae out of wedlock I kinda started skipping pages reading here and there. It was cheesy and dorky and something my 11yr old might totally enjoy. The world building was weird, like it had to much, and when I mean to much, I mean everything going on makes zero sense and there's a lot of hot air being blown. She is transported to the market, and she sees fae, but she also encounters a juggler on stilts and a witch doctor with a bone through his nose and shrunken heads with a third eye? It says there is no magic yet she sees a wizard? She encounters a banshee? There is way to much going on that does not fit together. This author started out with a plan and maybe a plot? and got way to carried away with ideas. Which can be great if done right, this however is not the case, and we get a book full of confusion and just down right bad writing. I'm giving this three stars because I 100% believe a child wrote this seeing our main character is 13. A for effect honey

Wow, at first I thought I was quite a bit older than the target audience for this book, but I felt the author really explored the MC very well and it felt very genuine to me. I saw another reviewer compare it to Harry Potter, but I felt that while there were some similarities, this book was more than 99% different. I have ordered copies for my nieces as I feel the MC character had quite a few lessons to teach my tweenie nieces. I would recommend this to pretty much anyone in the 12-99 demographic. Bravo to Ms. Provost!

Absolutely magical read!

it is a very evocative read. The main character goes from abject poverty to this fantastical school, and tho adversity plagues her, she starts to gather true friends and family. Provost writes of the homeless in a kind and understanding way, no judgements for what these ppl have to do to survive. The magical world Holly is introduced to is filled with wondrous creatures and some villainous ppl. I am eager to read more of Holly's story. Enjoy!

Excellent read

Was leery about the purchase but it was well worth the read. Some parts frustrated like being kept in the dark about ones history. I cried for the young girls harsh upbringing and was sorrowful for her deep loss. I wanted to run out, grab every homeless child and drag them home to feed and shelter them. I cheered her strength, applauded her friends and wait in anticipation for her next battle. Well done.

Sigh...

Oof this book was a struggle to get through. The writing style unfortunately seemed very juvenile. The plot was mediocre at best and too many details were thrown in without explanations. The storyline itself repeated and the meat of the story didn’t happen until the second to last chapter. I felt reminiscent of a terrible horror movie and I wanted to scream “no don’t go in there” ... too bad, the story could have been good in theory...

A fun and fast-paced read with an exciting plot and a strong, likable protagonist. The fact that she’s a homeless teen living on the streets when we meet her adds depth to the story that some similar books lack. Faerie Misborn is like Mean Girls meets Harry Potter, but with a unique charm all its own. Looking forward to future installments.

Faerie mayhem

Needs some questions answered and I would have preferred our heroine to be a tad older before adding the element of romance. Still I was entertained by a fresh take on fae society and will look forward to the next book offering a little more than a glimpse.
Though I could not offer five stars it was a fair start to a new series.

This was a different, yet very familiar story all at the same time. I have read a lot of books with this general storyline, but this one had some pretty decent world building. It is a quick read, took me less than two hours, but it comes alive and is pretty decent. This is definitely a YA read, but it is a fun afternoon getaway. Thank you for the opportunity to review!

Holly is awesome

I am very happy I read this book . Holly is different from what I've read before , she didn't jump right into a relationship with any boys . She was true to herself and paid attention to her own feelings . I will be rereading this story .

I quite enjoyed this book, particularly after looking forward to it for months. Holly seemed pretty believable as a character, growing up on the streets she's hardened and wary. I'm looking forward to following her story in her coming school years.

Love!

I absolutely loved this book. I wasn’t sure at first when I learned how old she was, because I would have like her to be a bit older, but I fell in love. Great book put together very nicely. As you keep reading you just can’t seem to stop.

This book is suitable for young teens and I believe the girls will love it. A Cinderella who grew up homeless learns her father is a king.

mixed emotions (adult reader)

My first book I read by Samaire. I was intrigued by the into and reviews I read. I rarely read this genre or YA books, but occasionally I want a change. If they can suck me into their world I will read others.

This book for the most part did so. If I was no a Native NYer, and did not know so much about growing up poor, and the resources for the homeless I would have given it a five. Maybe if the “aunt” and Holly had been born in the sixties or prior to social services it would have not stood out as inaccurate. Their are so many resources, from places to take showers, free hot and Togo food, clothes. Biggest glaring error is her not being caught or turned in because a child in her condition (especially when she was young) would have been. Social services would have forced aunt to seek shelter, then prioritize her place, ent in apartment with food, job, health assistance. Holly would have Been in school. FYI would not have been perfect, some of people that work in field should not, and pride, humiliation take many hits.
Now for the rest of the story. I liked the world, but only once I said stop reading it as an adult woman and look at it through the key demographic audience that I was sucked into the story.
Will read book two in series. But wish that author had dealt with her friends feelings about finding out her crush had eyes for someone else.

Not great but I atleast fmwas able to finish it.

This book, was a little childish for my tastes, I get that the main character is 13, but her mentality is much younger. I found myself constantly rolling my eyes and skipping paragraphs for the absurdity of the situations.
Having had a difficult childhood myself I found this character to soft to be a kid brought up on the streets. To trusting to naive. Living on the streets should have given her a lot more knowledge of people than she had. She comes off entirely to innocent for someone what to steal to live. Makes me wo der if the author was ever in a situation like this.
In the story details change, we read the death scene but later in the book details about it change.. and it isnt accurate to what you originally read.
I dont understand her take on the fae, they are depicted completely opposite of what this woman has written.
A fae bastard, a royal one at that would have been treated different and much worse. The fae are a proud lot.
I will not read the second book. Or the third.. I'm not entirely sure this author is form me.

Holly is 13. Her mother is dead and we find more about that backstory. She lives with her 'aunt' in some of the worst conditions possible. A boy, Chance, helps her after her 'aunt' dies and she ends up at a school for special young people.

One problem right off, though, is that her hair has a certain color and her eyes are a certain way which marks her as 'misborn.' Bluntley, some royal person got a woman pregnant out of wedlock and Holly was the result.

There are problems at the school for her including considerable bullying and at the same time she needs to adjust to things she never experienced in the street life she led before.

At the school the students end up with familiars and Holly has two wolves. Having two familiars is very unusual. Bullying isn't the only problem she faces, though, as the forest has dangers of its own.

It also seems people know things about her but won't tell her what they known until the situation becomes worse and the truth comes out.

It's a neat story showing how a girl living in terrible conditions manages to find friends (and bullies, of course) and proves her ability to survive the challenges she faces.

Probably awesome for tweens!

I was intrigued by the first chapter after this showed up as a recommendation based on my previous choices. It soon became trite and predictable, however, as a 50 something year old woman, I suspect I was not the intended audience. I did feel compelled to finish it though, do that's something. If you don't have a problem with paranormal fiction, this would probably interest a middle school age girl. Caution: spoiler ahead! There is one accidental death (not gory at all) and one natural death. There is an innocent kiss, and one or two low level swear words. Alcohol is mentioned, but briefly. Probably just enough not to feel too goody two shoes. The author uses "hahaha" instead of "she laughed", but that's probably a personal problem on my end. I think I would have really enjoyed this as a tween or young teen!

Loved it the second time too

Now to be truthful this book is not without a terrible amount of little editing goofs but I loved it when I first read it quite some time ago and I love it even more the second read through. Everything is told in vivid details and with honest emotions unlike too many books out there that I couldn’t get past the middle. Details matter. I liked finding out all the places she went to and how life was and now is for Holly. She is a fantastic heroine and the magic is exceptional. You should not miss this great story. From homeless to a new identity as a fae, she’s got a lot going on and it’s a fantasy adventure for any age.

Great

I picked this because of the very well introduction.. Made you know that this girl was more and trouble was to come with her.
I love the fact she was okay with what ever type of person she encounters. It was like okay have seen that before but lets just run with.
I would very much recommend this book if your interested i seeing a young lady that has no clue about her life fights so hard to make sence of things and understand it.
