Coal Country #4

Eagle Mountain

Rate this book
Marie walked out on her husband after the second slap and has been standing on her own two well-heeled feet ever since. To say she has trust issues is the tip of the proverbial iceberg. In her opinion, a steady man is a luxury, not a necessity.

Cole has a long history of impulsivity and a savior complex as big as his shoe size. A laundry list of guilt and bad decisions follow him wherever he goes. What he lacks in judgement he makes up for with heart and good intentions.

Thrown together by fate, the unlikely pair must decide whether what they have is love or just the thrill of the chase.

I'm a Midwestern native in love with my neck of the woods. Rolling hills, cornfields and a slower pace of living serve as the perfect backdrop for writing small town, second chance romances. My stories are based in small towns but I hope you see a bit of yourselves in them, wherever you may be.

I write mostly characters in their late thirties and early- to mid-forties because I feel like that’s when things get really, really tricky. I love writing this demographic because by our thirties and forties, we’ve most likely seen some major turmoil and our affections are harder won. We’ve seen new love and maybe watched it crumble. Maybe we’ve had earth-shattering loss and our hearts have hardened a little. We’re tougher to crack, but the payoff is that much sweeter. We have had careers, lovers, maybe children, and now, just when we think we have it all figured out, something throws a monkey wrench in the works and we’ve got to rise to the top, again.

The characters in Eagle Mountain touch your heart because they aren’t perfect, they make mistakes, and they have doubts. There’s a lot of reality here, but also, of course, plenty of romance. Not nice, easy, tied with a bow romance – messy, complicated sometimes, romance. This is a great story, and even if you haven’t read the earlier books in the series (but why would you not?), it’s a terrific stand-alone novel. I loved the setting and Hillary really knows what small town life is like! I think what I enjoy the most is the dialogue. When a group of women get together to “dish”, this is really what they say. I’ve read all her books and can’t wait for the next one!

Eagle Mountain: A Coal Country Novel by Hillary DeVisser. I devoured this book in one sitting. Eagle Mountain is a heartwarming story that will take you to a small town by the base of Eagle Mountain. Small town stories always hit home with me having grown up in one. Ms. DeVisser delivers a true small-town feeling with her writing in this book. A very well written story with a great cast of characters that intertwine with each other in a perfect rhythm. They will make you feel like you are in the small town as one of them. This story will make you laugh and cry. It is filled with twists and surprises. This is a book about overcoming insecurities to find love. I enjoyed the storyline, the amazing characters, the suspense with every, twist and turn. What I really liked was the building of the relationship between the characters. The sweetness, the realness, and honesty. Ms. DeVisser has the magical ability to draw you into the story and hold you there until you turn the very last page. Yes, this book is a part of a series however it can be read as a stand-alone as well.

This was a beautifully written story about overcoming trust issues and redeeming yourself for past mistakes. Maria and Cole come together is a small town but with a big heart. Their romance hit the mark with realistic expectations. Hillary DeVisser has a knack for creating a heartwarming story while also letting the reader feel as they are part of the town. This was my first novel by this author and it certainly will NOT be my last.

Eagle Mountain is the fourth book in Hillary Devisser’s Coal Country series of romance novels set in southern Illinois. Having read and enjoyed Eagle Mountain’s three predecessors, I was eagerly anticipating this latest instalment of lovely, uplifting reads. I’m pleased to say I was not disappointed.

The heroine of the story is Marie, a fiercely independent woman from St Louis who has had more than her fair share of tough times. Bitter experience has hardened her views on love, and in the wake of yet another failed romance, she decides to take a break from the city and do some much-needed healing against the backdrop of a forest retreat. There she meets Cole, whom fans of the series may remember as one of the male protagonists from the first Coal Country novel, The Fishing Hole. Like Marie, Cole comes with a whole lot of baggage, but it seems like it’s not always opposites that attract and, very quickly, sparks begin to fly. But with old habits dying hard and old flames reappearing, the path to true love is far from smooth.

As in the previous books, Devisser employs a third-person narrative, which works well for giving equal insight into both protagonists’ thoughts and experiences. Devisser has a talent for creating likable, memorable characters, with Marie and Cole being no exception. For the avid reader of this series, there is the added bonus that Devisser reintroduces characters from the previous books in a supporting cast of relatable, down-to-earth people who bring a smile to your face. Equally smile-inducing is the setting; the small town, the dense forests and the mountain roads, all beautifully described. I’ve never visited southern Illinois, but Devisser’s writing makes me feel as though I should.

Eagle Mountain is a gently-paced read, but not without its twists and turns – the ending, in particular, was quite unexpected. Like the previous Coal Country novels, however, it succeeds in being a real feel-good romance. This is the sort of book you can curl up with on a chilly autumn day, whilst wearing woolly socks and sipping a mug of hot chocolate. Five stars.

I have anxiously awaited the 4th in this series and I was not disappointed. I was given the opportunity to read an advanced copy for an honest review.

Eagle mountain is a page turner and quick read, just like the previous three books in the series. I love how the author brings in all the characters from the previous books just enough to tie them together, but not enough that you lose the main characters story. When introducing, she also gives you just enough of a subtle hit of their story which was perfect for those like me who are terrible at remembering characters names!

If you haven’t already fallen in love with Coal Country, then start now. If you have, you won’t be disappointed. As a southern Illinois girl, I have never been to where the author is from, but I relate to EVERYTHING she talks about. It is such small town midwestern.

My only negative in Eagle Mountain is there isn’t much for steamy details. Like the whole series, it takes you through romance and to the brink of steam, but stops short of the serious smut I wish was included. So Eagle Mountain left me to fill in those details myself.

Excellent read. Now if I only knew if I am now patiently waiting for book 5 or if there is a whole new series coming. Either way, i love this authors work.

This was a really great read with many twists and turns - perfect! I do like a book that keeps you on your toes and Marie and Cole's story does just that.
Their relationship is no ordinary one and actually, I was unsure exactly how far they could go together. It's not an easy path, but then again, true love isn't easy.
The combination of angst, edge and emotion kept me turning the pages and gave me all the feels. You can certainly hear the authors voice on every page and I love that. It makes this story all the more enjoyable.
Despite this being the first book I've read by Hilary DeVisser, I felt I didn't lose anything by not reading the previous books first. This can be read as a standalone, which is how I read it. Having said that, now I'm interested to find out about the rest of the gang. There is an excellent selection of character and this 4th book in the series has drawn me in. I want to know everything about the rest of the gang!

Out of the 4 books DeVisser has written in this series, I think this is my favorite one to date! I read it in one sitting! Being able to so easily identify with Marie sealed the deal for me. Marie is perfectly, imperfect. She has walls built up, with no intention of letting anyone in. She is complex, yet beautiful, doesn’t like asking for help and keeps her friend group small. The author has such a talent that allows a reader to see parts of themselves in each main character, it’s truly a gift. I feel like the characters in the book aren’t just characters, that they are friends I get to visit. I don’t feel like I just read Eagle Mountain, I feel like I lived Eagle Mountain. I could envision the incredible views from Cole’s house, the camaraderie amongst the friends, and the height of emotion during the plot as it thickened. Thanks for another amazing look into life in Coal Country.

I have loved every book in the Coal Country series! While Marie wasn’t someone who stood out to me from the previous stories, Cole sure did! I was excited to dive more in to his intense character. Marie progressed very quickly in to someone I identified with and I understood every thought and feeling she expressed. I love having a setting and characters that I can totally see happening in my own little town. As always, Deviser’s twists and turns will have you scrambling for the next page! While I’m sad to see this series end, I think the author did a GREAT job showing us where/how all our favorite characters ended up.

It's another great read in the Coal Country series from a local author. Southern Illinois friends will definitely relate to the small town feel and the Shawnee Forest...we are living in this setting. Marie is ready for a break from the city and her friend Jesse suggests coming to Southern Illinois to stay in a cabin for about a month. Marie ends up off the side of a gravel road on her way to the cabin. In Marie's words, " some sort of mutant owl from hell, flew right at my car." Cole comes along. She's reluctant. He could be a serial killer. She's in the middle of nowhere...what does she do?

I read Eagle Mountain as an advance reader. I absolutely couldn’t quit reading. The characters have their own problems they have to work through. Trust is the biggest issue. Past baggage being an issue too.
Perfect descriptions let the reader imagine just how beautiful the area is and how people from small towns are ready to help when problems surface. I felt like the characters were people I knew since a lot were in the previous books in the Coal Country series.

Coming from two different worlds, building trust and learning to open your heart again, this book can teach us all how amazing allowing vulnerability while learning to move forward in life and letting the pieces fall into place can really be.
