This was in a 2 for 1 deal with "Dark Fire" by Elizabeth Lowell, and my first by this author. I really enjoyed...sort of.

The majority of the book was pretty good with Noah being very swoon worthy, but I did get irritated a little with the premise of the book. Think Hatfield-McCoy family feud times 100. It is modern day Texas, and I get the whole feud thing, but her brothers were a little too much for me.

The story itself was great, very believable until the end. I don't know how these things work, but it seemed to me to be going along just fine then the author did a word count, realized she was very close to her maximum so she wrapped it up in a chapter. The ending was very rushed which was sad because it didn't fit the nice pace of the rest of the story.

I'll look for the other books, but I don't know what to expect.

I really enjoyed this heartwarming story. I loved how hard Noah worked to win over Martina’s heart. Noah didn’t believe in love, but along this journey his heart fell in Love with Martina.
Martina felt torn. She was very loyal to her family and didn’t want to hurt them. At the same time she was slowly falling in love with Noah. The two families had a 100 year grudge going on. Could a baby bring the two families together?
I loved the easy going banter between Martina, and Noah. This was a fun book to read. I can see myself re reading it later on.

I loved this book! The character's are all well-developed. The Logan family and the Coltrane family haven't gotten along for generations. Martina's older brothers are definitely over-protective of her which is a huge problem when they find out that she's pregnant after a brief fling with Noah Coltrane. Noah's brothers are just as shocked when they realized that he would be as crazy as to mingle with a Logan.

Martina and Noah's relationship has a classic romance dynamic. Noah is a traditional hero who wants to marry the pregnant heroine out of a sense of honor and concern for the child's well-being while Martina is the stereotypical heroine, resistant to losing her independence to a marriage not based on love. Martina also is wary of marrying Noah due to a long-held family feud between their two families. The otherwise well-worn story beats are make fresher by the author going beyond just a surface level exploration of the characters.

Martina's fear of a loveless marriage goes beyond the normal romance heroine's vague fear and makes sense in the context of her childhood experience of parental regret. Also, while stubborn, Martina's obstinency avoids the common trap of moving beyond understandable to annoying.

The relationship between Martina and Noah is well-done, with sufficient time exploring their emotional connection and why they work together as a couple beyond sexual attraction. I especially liked that the story also takes the time to show Martina bonding with Noah's brothers. The scenes are short but still succeed in fleshing out Noah's brothers. Often shorter romance books don't take the time to develop side characters.

My main criticism of the book is that there was almost no time spent on the two families reconciling. The jump to family forgiveness between Noah and Martina's brothers felt rushed and unbelievable. A more minor issue, there is a potentially offensive stereotype of Native Americans used in the beginning of the book. Noah is implied to have a better ability to predict the future because he has some Native American ancestry and therefore has some connection with their mysticism. Thankfully, it is only briefly mentioned in one scene, but it is still problematic.

cw: brief mention of abortion, parental neglect, death of a parent

Straight up - my edition has the *worst* front cover. A photo of a boring looking woman in frumpy sweats and a massive, frumpy sports-bra doing yoga... it's really really awful.

Yet inside lurks a very sweet romance with one of my most beloved male characters types - the bulldozer. I really enjoyed this, very low angst, lots of sweet gestures, and an idiot hero who eventually gets it.

Lately I have been growing to love this series of books just because of their plots. I'm not usually a fan of third person perspective novels because we'll let's face, you don't get to experience as much emotion and empathy without hearing it from them directly, but these always have strong plots and emotion that the intensity of it all is just multiplied than your normal third person perspective novel.

This was was a great read, short, which frustrates the living hell out of me because I and ways get mad at the end by the lack of epilogue or body to the story. Still worth it though if you love an intense 186 page short story.
