Ordinary Magic #8

Nobody's Ghoul

Rate this book
Police Chief Delaney Reed can handle supernatural disasters. With gods vacationing in her little town of Ordinary, Oregon, and monsters living alongside humans, she’s had plenty of practice.

But trying to handle something so normal, so average, so very ordinary as planning her own wedding to the man she loves? Delaney is totally out of her depth.

When a car falls out of the sky and lands on the beach, Delaney is more than happy to push guest lists and venue dates out of her mind. The car appears empty, but someone has slipped into Ordinary with stolen weapons from the gods. Someone who has the ability to look like any god, monster, or human in town. Someone who might set off a supernatural disaster even Delaney can’t handle.

Another fun book from the town of Ordinary. I've had such a good time with this series and I love just tuning in every once and a while to see what is going on in the little town all the gods go to vacation in.

Time stops, there is a loud bang and a car falls out of the sky in the beginning of Nobody's Ghoul. Then something else strange starts happening and the dangerous weapons that gods did not bring into Ordinary start being delivered to them without explanation. Amazing since most of them would kill any being who isn't a god themselves. Who is dropping off dangerous presents, what are they going to do with said weapons and how is Delany going to keep a monster hunter from finding out the secrets of her not so sleepy little town. Also she is going to have to pick a wedding date soon if she doesn't want to lose the man she has been in love with since she was six.

I had a good time with this one as well and it was fun trying to figure out why weapons kept showing up in Ordinary. This was one of the better plotted books of the series. I'm really liking the overall arc to the main war that should be coming to Ordinary eventually and it looks like they might have some unexpected help out there trying to tip the scales.

Also my favorite fact learned in this book is that Demons have the most ridiculous names from weapons and battles. They were hilarious and I enjoyed giggling at them.

If you are this far into the series you know what to expect and I don't think you will be disappointed at all.

It took a bit longer for me to get into it - I blame being very busy at work that I need a brain rest other than focusing on an urban fantasy book - but once I did, as always, Devon Monk delivered...

It started with a car falling out of the sky, then Delaney has to deal with other things that appear in her Ordinary town: gods' weapons being delivered to their doorstep (and no living or unliving thing can EASILY enter a god's domain!), ghoul thief, missing book of gods' spells, monster hunter, and apparently another demon who may (or may not) want to start a war with Bathin's father, the King of Underworld.

On top of that, Delaney seems to be unable to pick a wedding date.

Yeah, fun 😆

Like other books in this series, I loved it. I always adore the gods in Ordinary. And clearly, everyone is unwilling to let the peaceful life they have in Ordinary being destroyed. When the monster hunter comes to town, everyone rallied to keep themselves look, well, ordinary. These citizens can be solidly working together.

There isn't a lot of new updates about the possible war coming to Ordinary - though I believe it will be with King of the Underworld. It cannot be help, especially with . I will look forward to that catastrophe.

in the meantime, hey, at least there's a wedding around the corner. That would be a blast (or a bit of chaos 😉)

I feel like we’ve had Delaney drag her heels enough on this wedding and relationship. I was truly irritated by her weird gooey inner dialogue only to have her mess up all the wedding planning talk. Yeah it really doesn’t take much to give some input on the big day, so it makes her character feel so thoughtless and lame without cause. It’s also been a running theme. This isn’t a tv show where you never let the main characters get together so quit it. Find new conflict. Also as soon as they knew it was a ghoul who could become what they bit I was onto the crab and yet they took a long time to get there. Then the run in with Than being weird and she did nothing to check him out??? Terrible detective work here. Just awful.
Then we have the whole Vivian conflict that literally did nothing to advance the plot. It had Delaney running to tell people to be on their best behavior which they already should have been and most of them had already been told by Bertie...felt useless. And then Ryder doesn’t come back from dinner until after 1am?! Um excuse me how and why? That felt wayyyy off.
The last part about it being Cupid who was gunning for the town made me think he was going to shoot Ryder and make him hook up with Vivian, but no. It all felt like bad filler to get to the next story. This was not one of the better parts of this series and you could probably skip right over it since not much new was introduced other than a ghoul. And man it felt so self congratulatory for Delaney to pay herself on the back for asking to identify a ghoul’s gender correctly. Anti climactic and not even a wedding to show for it. I really was thinking the wedding would be the final act of the show off because Bertie wanted Ryder as the final act and they talked about how it was set up as almost a large potential wedding venue, but maybe that is what will happen because nothing else was going on here.

I’m not sure I can keep
Going with this series - I love the Graphic Audio narration, I love the side characters. However, I loathe the love interest and I am so done with all the dumb wedding nonsense! Can’t believe they’re going to stretch it out into yet another book!! The earlier books in this series were definitely better.

I’ll give it a 3- because of the parts I do like.

I enjoyed the first several books in this series, but my enjoyment level has been decreasing. The books have become focused on the relationship drama to the detriment of the rest of the plot.

Delaney can’t commit and Ryder is endlessly patient. Again. Didn’t we just do this in the last book? Listen, I know lots of people who rehash the same issues and don’t really have any personal growth. But that’s not what I’m looking for in my entertainment.

As for the mystery, the author makes it so obvious what’s happening that it’s frustrating when the characters are oblivious.

“Trust me that gods are drama queens who always make every little thing about themselves, Chief Reed.”
Ordinary seems like such a fun town and I always enjoy diving back into this series. Nobody's Ghoul finds Delaney stressing (AF) over her upcoming (?) nuptials to Ryder (the most patient man).
“Hunters and thieves and ghouls? Yep. Pretty much a normal Thursday night.”
On other fronts, the sisters are dealing with a car that fell from the sky, stolen powers, a handsy monster hunter and a ghoul that can take the form of anyone. Oh, and Bertie's on another event planning mission - Look out!

The next installment should be loads of fun - impending war and a wedding. Will the war break out during the wedding? Will the wedding be a double celebration post-war? Will the wedding get bumped because of the war? Can't wait to find out, especially since all the gods have been invited to the wedding.

This book was just as good as the rest of the books in this series. This is one of my favorite series. I really like this author, Devon Monk. Delaney and Ryder are engaged and I wait with baited breath for the wedding. But I did not find it in this book. I was so hoping for another book and my prayers were answered recently. This book has action and more gods and more everything we love from the series. But a war is coming and Delaney's luck it is coming right beside her wedding. I can't wait to start the new book Brute of All Evil that just came out. This series has all sorts of supernatural creatures and so much more fun and action but the best part is these books also make me laugh. What a great series!

A car falls out of the sky, and gods are getting unexpected deliveries of their own weapons (weapons they thought were locked away, safe from anyone touching them.) The heroine is dragging her feet on wedding prep, and there's a monster hunter sniffing around town, endangering residents. Just another day in the life in Ordinary, Oregon.

Good story! Delaney was so whiny about her wedding at the beginning that she it put me off the book! But once I got into the story, I enjoyed it! Love those demons!

This one is jam packed right from the start with a car falling out of the sky, something that could only happen in Ordinary. From there little things start showing up, things that really concern Delaney and the gods in town. It also doesn't help that an old co-worker of Ryder's shows up and they have to hide so much of the town that makes it so fun. By the end of the book there is a sigh of relief with everything getting taken care of, but you know more is to come that doesn't look good.

I was disappointed by this book. I felt like it was all filler, with way too much of Delaney whining about her wedding and missing very obvious clues. What happened to the insightful and fun little town I used to love? I was also frustrated that so many things that were mentioned and talked about weren’t wrapped up in this book- it felt like there is enough plot for one book but the author tried to stretch it into two. I will not be continuing the series.

Problems in Ordinary

When are there not problems Ordinary? Never, but they are handled with compassion and humor. I like that and I like getting to know the whole town better. But best of all is dragon pig.

I just love the town of Ordinary. Oregon where the gods go to vacation. “Nobody’s Ghoul” finds Delaney all stressed out about her engagement to Ryder. Yet, while she stresses, Ryder is doing all of the planning.

Our story begins with with a car being dropped onto the beach. When Delaney, Ryder and her sister go to investigate all they find is a clean car except for one small crab scurrying out. Additionally, there is another mystery to solve. It seems someone or something is dropping off his weapon at the doors of its owners. Everyone is at a loss as to how or why this is happening.

As the one town prepares for the ‘Show Off’ talent show a monster Hunter makes her presence known. She use to work with Ryder and is doing everything she can to aggravate Delaney. Little does she know but Delaney and the town has her number.

Soon the answers to most of the mysteries becomes clear; yet, this read felt incomplete to me and not in a way that is in preparation for the next installment. Ms. Monk leaves us hanging on the minor details that I can’t go into without inserting spoilers. In some ways this read feels like a “filler” book even though it is also signaling a war to come. I just expected more and this book didn’t deliver it to me. Don’t get me wrong there are some fun moments but not enough for me to say it was incredible. Sorry Ms. Monk this is not one of your better reads!

There is something special about Ordinary

The three Reid sisters, Delaney, Myra and Jean, take care of the gods’ vacation town and its multifarious inhabitants, both as the local police force and through their various family gifts. Delaney is the bridge that allows the gods to put their powers into safe storage and live as mortals (mostly). Myra’s gift is to be always where and when she is most needed. Jean’s is to sense the approach of serious danger. But there is always something strange happening and it is hard work keeping the mortal residents in ignorance of the true natures of their friends and neighbours.

This eighth book in the series begins with Delaney in a panic because she can’t face planning her wedding to her childhood sweetheart Ryder, rushing to the beach where her sisters have witnessed a car fall from the sky. It is the start of a whole series of strange goings-on.

Many of the regular characters appear, including Bertie, the fearsome valkyrie and dreaded organiser of Ordinary’s fundraising/tourist events, and two of my favourites: Crow, the trickster god, and ‘Than’, or Thanatos, the god of death.

The books are a lot of fun and I have enjoyed all of this series hugely. I recommend reading them in order, to appreciate the developing stories and characters.

4 Every God Would Rise Stars

Nobody's Ghoul is the eighth book in the Ordinary Magic series by Devon Monk.

I really enjoyed meeting Tish. I truly hope this character is here to stay because they are so surprisingly innocent and honest. Maybe only with the help of Bathin, on the honesty front. But they are the ultimate cinnamon roll. Must be protected.

I am however, forever worried about Goap and Vychoro. This war is set. So many signs pointing towards ultimate destruction, fast and incoming. I still find myself wondering who they will find fighting beside the King? Will it be a God we gave met? Will it be some other hidden deity we've yet to encounter? Will there betrayal?

All of this while they set out to plan and have a wedding. War and Wedding. Conquer evil, and live happily ever after...

I do feel like this whole Vivian scare is unfinished? The DoPP hasn't stepped back into this series since they were first introduced. Since the moment Ryder left their employ, we've heard nothing of them. Which is a little troubling.. I wonder if we can expect any incoming turmoil from this avenue?

Will the wedding be held at the casino??

Just another day in Ordinary.

Delaney Reed is Sheriff of the town of Ordinary, her siestas Jean and Maya are two of her deputies. But Ordinary is a town which does not live up to its name. The town is a haven for Gods ——-from every pantheon like, Zeus and Odin to name two———— and other supernatural beings, in order for the Gods to stay in Ordinary they must lay down their God powers and live as simple humans. The town is a refuge they escape to when the pressure of being a God become stifling. Delaney is the go between to whom the Gods surrender their powers before taking residence. This book sees Delaney having to deal with a car falling from the sky, Gods getting mysterious parcels left on their doorsteps and a monster Hunter arriving in town, just a regular Friday. Oh, and also find time to plan her wedding.

Another fun romp in Ordinary, Oregon. I quite enjoyed the story this time around rather than the internal dilemma Delaney had going in this book. It felt like her issues with feeling like Ryder will eventually get tired of her or of the craziness that is Ordinary have been harped on for the last few books. I think him proposing and taking on the bulk of the wedding planning should've put that worry to rest.

The story was a lot more fun and a few dominoes were lined up this time around for the next book. I think the next book is the last in the series, or at least the arc and I am looking forward to see how they fall and what design they make.

One of the lows for me was that we got less of Than. But we did get to see more of the the other gods and Crow played a role in this story. I am going to miss Ordinary once I read the next book.

Entertaining as always

It was good because all of Devon’s books are good. Delaney’s bouts of insecurity about her relationship are getting a tad old as she and Ryder have been through enough to know that is solid. Her dreamy looks at Ryder are becoming less frequent and less distracting for her which is good. That brand new relationship googley stuff was starting to get distracting for the reader. I think Devon has almost hit the right level googley for an established relationship.

The story of Supernatural mystery in Ordinary was fun as always. Another link in the chain leading to what promises to be a climate battle at some point in the future. This book stands alone as a story but as with last couple foreshadows a future conflict.

Enjoyable series

I am definitely enjoying this series. Like I've said in previous reviews I enjoy the characters, the sense of humor, the various storyline plots that come up, and the romance that is included. When I was first listening to the graphic audio for the book and reading it on my Kindle I was beginning to get frustrated with Delaney because she keeps struggling with her relationship with Ryder and he is 100 million percent in it and I just want them to get married already. However, the way things worked in the book and the way it ended it was nice and I wasn't as frustrated. I have one more book to go in the series and I am looking forward to all of the elements that I've enjoyed so far and a very happy ending for the characters.

Delaney Reed is dealing with a car falling from the sky, god's weapons showing up in town, a new being who could be anyone, tricky demons, and then someone shows up in town meaning to do harm to the supernatural beings that she protects in the little town of Ordinary. Then there’s her wedding to plan, and the whole idea is really stressing her out. I love the Ordinary Magic series, all three of the sisters are wonderful and their partners as well as the gods and other supernatural beings in town make life interesting. I’m always happy when a new story comes out, and then I can’t wait for more to come to see what crazy events will happen next.

This is a fun series and I enjoyed this entry. Ordinary Oregon is where gods can lay aside their powers and go on vacation. Delaney is the latest Reed to be in charge of the town and the residents, supernatural and not, who reside there.

This book focuses on Delaney as she is trying to plan her wedding or avoid planning said wedding. Before she can figure out what her deal is there is a crisis in town that leads to a couple more. This is a middle book that doesn't solve anything or really bring anything new to the table but I really enjoyed it. Can't wait to see where the series goes from here!

We know the Delaney and Ryder are getting married but there are some pre-wedding jitters on the part of Delaney. They will hopefully get resolved.
The part of the book that will get to you is the car falling from the sky and some unusual things turning up in Ordinary. You will meet a very interesting new character called Tish. You will learn about a very unusual book written by some very well known people in Ordinary. I really hate to use spoilers because part of the interest in reading a book is how the story and the characters evolve. Read this book which is part of one of the best series of books I have ever read and I can’t wait for the next book!

Great read

I have been reading this storyline since the beginning and I love the concept. It's a different concept for paranormal, and that is where the fun starts. In a lovely town everyone is welcome but they have to leave their "power" in safe keeping. So it becomes a vacation spot for Gods, vamps, gnomes and many more. Do yourself a favor and start at the beginning and jump into the lives of the Reed sisters who maintain order in a little town named Ordinary.

Devon Monk's "Ordinary Magic" series still has a little magic left within, but it does seem to be fading a bit as the series goes on. We get more of Delaney waffling about the wedding (ugh) and more dragon pig (yay). Death remains an entertaining character, and I do like that her sister's lives have played a bigger part as time has gone on. I will finish out the series but am hoping the next book ups the enjoyment factor again.

I love the Ordinary series

Devon Monk’s quirky, fun paranormal series about vacationing gods, demons, Bigfoots, and assorted other beasties is great fun. If you need something to take the edge of your day, Delaney and her sisters and all their weird little friends will do it for you. (These days, anything dystopian is just too darn close to home.)
