Definitely Not Coded Poetry is a collection of poetry that contains exactly what it says. There are no secret messages, arcane excerpts, or misleading metaphors to be found here. If you are looking for coded poetry, you chose a poor book to read.
Plus, even if there were coded poems, they would clearly be addressed to somebody who is not you, so you should not bother trying to decode any of the poems, none of which are coded. Make sense?
P. N. Quinn writes poetry on all the usual elements of life: love, death, remarkable fast food, etc. He dabbles in all sorts of archaic forms of poetry, including sestinas, villanelles, and other evil-sounding work. His work is eccentric and original and (it must be stressed) contains no codes whatsoever.
Definitely Not Coded Poetry has strong themes of love and loss. For Lemony Snicket fans, myself included, bells should be ringing.
You can easily appreciate Quinn's poems even without a poetry background. Check your English class baggage at the door; there's no analyzing anyway. It must be said that several poems feel weirdly cryptic, but put such thoughts aside. Let the words wash over you.
I say this because I know that many readers will probably have experienced the feelings Quinn conveys quite expertly in this collection. Nothing I have read recently compares.
All in all, marvelous. One more thing: there is wit and humor too. I am pleased to recommend the one about a cheeky lass.
In conclusion, I say: five stars. Like the dogs who salivate at the ringing of Pavlov's bell, I await Quinn's next work with bated breath.
