After the fall of East Germany, he fled to the Soviet Union but was extradited to West Germany, were he was accused and sentenced for high treason, cause he ordered border guards to shot at illegal border crossers.
He was released from prison for health reasons and died in exile in Chili a few years later.

Die Briefe Erich Honeckers machen tatsächlich nur die Hälfte dieses Buches aus. Die andere Hälfte ist die Korrespondenz zwischen Margot Honecker und Eva Ruppert, Mitglied im Solidaritätskomitee für Honecker. Nichtsdestoweniger ein interessantes Zeitdokument.
