I picked up The Final Problem mostly as part of my own side quest to better understand the characters in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - specifically Moriarty. Going into it with that context definitely shaped how much I got out of it.

Overall, this was a fun, easy-to-read short story. It’s quick, snappy, and very much in that classic Sherlock Holmes style that I’ve enjoyed before. The pacing is probably one of its strongest points - it moves fast, doesn’t overstay its welcome, and feels tight because of the short story format. I got through it in about a day, maybe a day and a bit, and it honestly made me want to go back and revisit more Sherlock Holmes stories again.

That said, I do think this one relies a bit on you already knowing the characters. Without that broader context, it might fall a little flat. But if you’re at least somewhat familiar with Holmes and Watson, it works well enough as a standalone piece.

I liked that the story is told from Watson’s perspective - it’s something I’ve always enjoyed about these stories. There were a few slightly confusing moments where the narrative jumps between Watson recounting events and Holmes explaining things back to him, but nothing too major.

The final sequence with was a highlight. It’s very descriptive, and I couldn’t help but compare it to the way it’s portrayed in the Sherlock Holmes films (the ones with Robert Downey Jr.). The movie version is a lot more explicit in showing what happens, whereas here Watson has to piece things together using Holmes’ own methods. I actually liked that approach - it’s clever - but I do think having seen the movie helped me understand it more clearly. Without that, I’m not sure I would’ve connected all the dots as easily.

In the end, this wasn’t anything mind-blowing, but it was solid. A good, enjoyable read that does exactly what it needs to do without trying to be more than it is.

I love the simplicity of this version. I recommend it to those who want to read the story, but doesn’t want to get lost in the 19th century English. I found this title at the library, and sadly it was the only one from this series. Now, I’m going to look for the whole collection at my local library. My 14-year-old me is a happy girl!!

An adventurous and fun as usual case . I only rated it 4 stars since at the end, Sherlock Holmes died by falling off the water fall . otherwise it was a good
book.
