I’m so glad that they’re getting even better. I just checked and realized this is almost the same comment I made on the last one, at least it and I are consistent.

TL; DR: Another great entry by LP to the Places of Power series that builds more to the end goal and the lore.

Storm Bound takes the formula that LP has been using for the previous entries and dials it up to eleven; all the stories and lore that we’ve been needling slowly from the overarching plot just blast you through the center with this one. Everything comes pouring out and your given a healthy dose of what the hell to go along with it. I’ll say this is the first time in the series I’ve actually felt like there were consequences to be had and the first time I’ve feared for characters’ lives. I’m interested to see where he’s going and can’t wait to finish this series.

Characters: The usual suspects are here, but even more besides; from Genie and Arachne to Strella and Anton, we continue to add to our cast of characters, some evolving, some splitting, and some changing entirely. It’s a hodgepodge of people that work really well together and manage to keep your attention the entire time. The random emotional outbursts also minimize during this time and I’m happy to say that it’s only getting better.

Setting: A few different ones, but all varied and interesting. The island was really well done and I appreciated all of the detail, but the scenes of then no past really stood out to me, as well as the ending settings, but that would be telling.

Story: No spoilers here, so I can’t talk about much, but I will say that this is the most that I’ve been invested in this story and I immediately began the next book. Enough should be said there.

Writing: It’s gotten better; LP cleaned up a lot of his weak points and has evolved how he brings about events and story lines without it feeling like he’s drudged them up out of nowhere. It’s a good feeling.

This fourth book in the series really brings a lot of the story and consequences home. I felt alive listening to this. I want more. I want to know how it ends, who lives and dies, who prevails. It’s a great story and I just know LP is bringing a lot more of the story back around in the next one. We’ll find these histories and futures and I can’t wait to do so.

3.5. The main appeal of this book lies in its setup for the next installment—which isn’t exactly the best thing to be known for within its own series. Additionally, the way events unfold feels more like a comedy of errors, relying too heavily on coincidence for the narrative to feel organic.

This installment doesn’t fully take advantage of its setting or world. While it introduces some intriguing elements—like the power set of Weaver, a Titan who understands their identity, and a few other supers born on the same space station as SC—nothing here truly grabbed my interest.

Happenstance can be great when used sparingly to shake up a story, but when too many random events pile up at once, it starts to feel contrived. Certain moments (like Lucio’s motorbike-buying adventure) seemed unnecessary, especially since those moments led directly into the main climax. It felt staged—like the plot was bending itself into place to set up the third act of the series rather than unfolding naturally. I just hope the elements introduced here actually pay off in the next two books to justify their inclusion.

That said, I do like where Petracci leaves us at the end. My frustration comes from the journey getting there, not the destination itself.

Not a bad installment, but I’ve seen better from this series. Here’s hoping the next book steps things up.

I've followed leonard petracci for a while, and have massively enjoyed his places of power series (the bridge is also great) but I feel like with each subsequent book he becomes a more profound writer, and this was no exception, really kept me reading, and got me so hyped for the next installment of the series.
