This series is such a weird one for me. I adore the art and much of the idea of dragon hunters sailing the skies. The food element 5 course, the main reason I picked it up, and it doesn't disappoint either.

But the parallel to whaling isn't a small one, and that makes the whole situation far from a favorite. The previous volumes was heavy on it as a positive, but I am happy to see that volume 4 leans the other way with the introduction of a character who provides a perspective that sees the beauty in Dragons instead of their uses.

Even with the complaint, I am still enjoying the series enough to continue it, and the beauty of the linework is some of the best on my shelve

Dragon Hunters meet dragon ecologist, chaos ensues. Fun read, another cliffhanger so now I need to put the next few books on hold at the library. Also going to watch the show now.

Like Takita in the last volume, Vannabelle shines in this one! Her sass, serious nature, and determination are so, so fun to follow. Mika also had some great moments! The food in this volume looked crazy good, while it’s always drool-worthy, the burgers at the start looked actually heavenly.

Aí o autor me perde.

E a jornada prossegue.

Jiro seeks to validate his skills on the high winds. Gaga searches for validation of his creative intuition. Takita yearns for the new, the dangerous, and the adventuresome. Yoshi, the cook, enjoys a kitchen challenge above all else. And Mika is just plain hungry. But what about Vanabelle?

DRIFTING DRAGONS #4 broaches the tender intersection of personal desire and professional ambition. Why are you on this ship? is the eternal query posed to sailors of sky, sea, and space since time immemorial. And while it appears each member of the Quin Zaza has his or her reasons to take up the life of the draker, the attractive and heavy-drinking Vannie has yet to find a reason she can claim for herself.

One of the more frustrating facets of this manga series is the complete lack of background narrative surrounding its characters. Such is the tragedy of an ensemble narrative -- there are simply too many characters and too many stories to dictate. Readers know Vannie comes from an out of the way community, maybe rural or maybe cosmopolitan hell-bent on tradition, but that's all. It wouldn't be at all surprising to learn the woman is only now on the downward swing of her youthful "rebellious phase." However, before readers learn the truth, they must witness Vannie come to terms with being the only draker on her ship without a clear idea of what it is she wants out of life. Money? Camaraderie? The sating of existential curiosity?

In the current volume, the Quin Zaza is clipped by a luxury airship owned by one Brno Massinga, scion of an eastern trading giant and resident dragon fanboy. Brno's obsession with the photography, art, and culture of dragons earns him mild favor of the main cast (while his arrogance and rich-boy rudeness does otherwise). Brno, without a doubt, is a friendly jackass, but he does possess genuine ambition: to travel the world and learn as much as he can about dragonkind. Indeed, if a guy like Brno can find his purpose in the skies, then why not Vannie?

Drifting Dragons has routinely hinted at Vanabelle's low-key depression on more than one occasion, isolating the young woman's skill as a crewmember to a support role despite her obvious experience. The question, at times, is less, "What does Vannie want to do with her life?" and more, "What can't she do?" She's grown attached to the big-sister role she plays opposite Takita and she covets the free-spirited disposition of those, like Jiro, who feel compelled to endure difficulty by some unwritten, moral code of skyfaring. And yet, no clear answer comes to the fore. Vannie is the definition of unfulfilled potential. Perhaps that's why any and every subplot involving her character concludes with heartbreak.

Drifting Dragons Review

5/5 stars

This will be a spoiler free review. Onto the review!

I found another new favorite manga series completely by accident. How? I stumbled across volume five for a dollar at a thrift shop and immediately fell in love with this series the moment I started it. I’m currently waiting on volume 14 to stop being checked out from the library so I can continue the series, but I think whoever’s reading this series is taking their time working through it very slowly. Noooooo…

In this story we follow a team of drakers who live on an airship and hunt dragons for food. Dragons in this world are giant eldritch monsters that occasionally attack cities at random. So it’s not like they’re out there hunting down cute lil dragons for sport. Although not all dragons will eventually become aggressive and attack people, they all have the potential to do so.

Despite my efforts to explain to you all why it’s sometimes ok to kill these “dragons,” I know that some of you might still not be cool with that, and that’s fine. If you feel that you wouldn’t be able to read a series in which these creatures are killed for food, then go ahead and walk away from this one. This is a major issue that people sometimes have when they start this series, and I wouldn’t want any of you to be uncomfortable with that.

Although, if you are planning on sticking around with this series, you’ll very quickly find that not only do readers sometimes take issue with that, but so do people in this world as well. There are a lot of people living in this world who hate drakers because they don’t think dragons should be hunted for food when farm animals exist. What they keep forgetting is that a cow isn’t going to burn a city to the ground just because it felt like being angry today.

Be prepared for these sorts of ethical discussions, because they’re all over this series. I’ve been thinking of Drifting Dragons as a more serious, skyfaring version of Delicious in Dungeon in my head, but since I haven’t read Delicious in Dungeon yet, I have no idea if that’s an accurate assumption or not. Look at me, finding more series to add to my tbr when my tbr is already way too big as it is…

Overall, the main plot events are related to taking down big dragons and meeting other people who interact with dragons in different ways. For example, they meet one ship and its crew that study dragons scientifically, and another ship that hunts dragons for the fun of it. Everyone has different ideas about how dragons should be treated, and those opinions often conflict with each other.

As the story goes on, you learn more about the backstories of some of the main characters, which is always very interesting. It usually comes up when they’re hunting a particular dragon, so you get both the cool dragon stuff alongside an emotionally gripping chunk of character development. I’ve never seen a story that pairs plot and character development in this exact way, so it’s really nice to get something that feels new and fresh.

At the end of some of the chapters, there are recipes for cooking different dragon dishes, and occasionally other dishes that don’t involve dragon meat or dragon eggs. I think these recipes would pretty easily translate to other real world foods if you substitute out dragon meat for chicken or pork or whatever meat you prefer. I’m interested in actually trying some of these recipes, because they all look so delicious.

I was able to find a few of them on the wiki after returning the manga to the library, but not all of them. Maybe I’ll check the manga out again and send the missing ones to whoever manages the Drifting Dragons wiki. Some of my favorites that I really wanted to try aren’t on the wiki. It looks like they mostly only have the ones from the first couple of volumes, but must have given up after a while. Not a manga giving me homework…

If you couldn’t tell by the fact that I’ve just been rambling on about random parts of this manga, I loved it so much. This series gives me so much to think about that I could just go on for days if you all let me. The dragons have such strange designs, the food looks delicious, the characters are really fun to learn about, and all the themes are so fascinating. I’m currently waiting on volumes 14-16 to get returned to the library so I can get caught up, and they can’t come back soon enough.

Also, a couple years ago, Netflix started an anime adaptation of Drifting Dragons, which I’m really sad won’t be continuing. It used a lot of 3D animation to capture the huge ships and dragons, which at first I thought I wouldn’t like, but I eventually grew to be ok with. I don’t feel like every single dragon I saw was as perfectly close to their manga designs as I would have liked, but the ones we see a lot of are pretty accurate, so that’s good. I’m not sure why nobody watched this series and why it was canceled. Maybe the manga wasn’t very far in translation yet? Idk. I’m just really sad about it.

If you’d be cool with reading a series about hunting and eating dragons, especially if you liked Dungeon Meshi, I’d love to know what you think of this one. I get the feeling that I’d probably like Dungeon Meshi based on how much I loved Drifting Dragons, so maybe I’ll get around to that one at some point. Don’t worry about trying to convince me to read Dungeon Meshi, I’ve already got it on my list. I will eventually get to it at some point. Just maybe not right now. I need to finish getting caught up with this one first.

Have a nice day/night everyone!

The manga continues it's wonderful work of expanding on the world of dragon research in the introduction of a young man who is absolutely fascinated by their existence. I've enjoyed spending time with this new side character, as well as learning more about draking life in general, but it was Vannabelle that shined the most out of the members of the crew. I'll be disappointed when the researcher parts ways with the cast, but I'm happy to know that not everyone is so gung-ho in the destruction of dragon kind, and that the crew is learning more and more, as they go, about how important dragons are for people in different ways.

My favorite volume so far! A lot of action shots and drama that went on in this volume I loved it. At first I really hated Brno for obvious reasons but he seems like a good guy. He cares for the dragons and wants to document all that he can! I feel like I’d probably end up getting along with him and want to do what he does.

Rich pretty boy wants to learn more about dragons, he’s obsessed with them, weaker storyline this time around, it’s interesting to see him have all this stuff and no one questioned him in his crew, I get it he’s rich but still it’s an obsession. He wants to take pictures but found a guy who can draw them with just one look. Odd.

Once again I am going to highlight a few different things.

Luxury Airliner Collision
In this volume, we meet the crew and the head person of this ship. This person gives off movie version Hiccup vibes. Not so much in personality or attitude, but it is about their share interest.

Main Character?
In volume 1, we are introduced to the greenhorn Takita, who seems to be our main character or the person we seem to follow, but as we go on everybody seems to get their turn. Except, we keep returning to these three: Takita, Vannabelle, and Mika. This series could easily follow Mika, which I would not say no to for he is my favorite. Yet, it could also follow Vannabelle. Now I am not sure if it is their looks that is inspiring this comparison, but Mika and Vannabelle remind me of Hawkeye and Margaret from the TV show M*A*S*H. They also may remind me a little bit of movie Hiccup and Astrid, but I think that is mostly due to page 154 and on.

Dragons as Ocean Animals Part 2
In volume 3, I discussed that these dragons are more like sea animals than what we typically think of as dragons. This discussion continues in this volume. As we know, this series is about draking, which is similar to our world's whaling. Besides the weapons used (harpoons), the dragons do not resemble whales until today. We learn about a dragon product that is commonly found in Sperm whales and was hunted for it to burn.

Verdict: I am so glad I had volume 5 on hand, because there was a cliffhanger!
