While the plot is interesting, the writing style was boring

The author was trying to be really deep with his analysis of Shin, but ended up repeating the same words over and over.

You would usually use different points of view to convey more information

Having 3 characters say something is red doesn’t make it reder, just boring to read.

As the volume title says, this and vol. 2 are really one story split in two, telling what happened between the first book's last chapter and epilogue.

I liked the story which expanded the world from San Magnolia to Federation of Giad and to Legion-controlled areas between the countries. In the vol. 2 Eighty-Six have a kind of new life but in which they still chose to return to the battlefield. Vol. 3 focuses on Shin and how he feels lost after accomplishing the goal he had. Shin wanted to find his brother and take him down and expected to die in the process. He didn't and now he doesn't have a reason to live, or fight, unless it's to die.

Yeah, it's pretty grim. Shin has been the one his squad mates have depended on and trusted him to send them off if they died. But it hasn't been equally supportive relationship and Shin hasn't really relied on others the same way because he's always the last man standing. Even though his current friends have been with him fairly long and even when they tell him to rely on them too, and how they are there for him, he doesn't dare because he thinks it won't last and would just hurt more. Shin is scarred inside (and outside...), and even though you know he'll survive and probably something his friends say will eventually get through to him, it's heartbreaking to read. I'm glad Shin's state of mind is explored though and it's just realistic even somebody strong and capable starts to crack at some point.

Something that forces Shin to analyze his thoughts, is Kiriya Nouzen, distant relative of his who has been assimilated by Legion and is solely focused on destroying everything. Shin is looking at someone who he could very well turn into, somebody who doesn't care about anything but fighting.
Kiriya is also former bodyguard/knight of last descendant of old Imperial family, Frederica. I felt she was kinda annoyingly tropey addition but in this book her role is smaller and also more meaningful. Didn't mind her this time.

Latter half of this book was 5 star material but the first half suffered from repetition/overwriting. With a little trimming it would've been excellent. Battle scenes are always engaging and exciting. The new Legion units bring new kind of threat and it really felt like a powerful opponent. Side note: it was cute how Asato was so excited about bringing Morpho into the story! You can really feel her nerdy glee in the afterword.

The other Eighty-Six didn't get much attention in this volume, so I hope we'll learn more about them in the following books. I also thought there'd be more about Lena and what's going in San Magnolia after seeing the book is 230 pages but nope, still no details on how Republic fell. I'm curious!

Ending made me both smile and had my eyes go misty, looking forward to the next volume!

A mildly intriguing, occasionally dramatic and indisputably sloppy conclusion to an otherwise very promising military sci-fi exploit. EIGHTY-SIX #3, technically, is volume two-point-five, since the publisher split the sequel into two separate releases, but the problem with this volume rests chiefly with the author's penchant for overwriting. This book is truly sufficient only for readers who thrive on lackluster secondary characters, haphazardly assembled antagonists, boorish middle arcs, and an infantile grasp of the storytelling strategies that capitalize on all the nervous tics and hiccups of amateur authorship.

EIGHTY-SIX #3 is a chaotic endgame that puts a pretty bow on Shin's apparently redoubled effort to eliminate the most troubling voices in the back of his mind. This is two-fold: after killing his brother, Shin is abruptly "lost" and without a purpose in life; the next threat from the Legion is a weapon in possession of the mind of Kiriya, the long-dead guardian of little Frederica (as well as a "distant relative" of Shin's family). These two bifurcations of Shin's self-doubt propel the novel forward. Regrettably, neither of them are particularly compelling.

The authenticity of Shin saving the annoying little empress by killing off his distant kin felt doable in the previous volume, but was definitely overplayed in the current one. Part of the problem rests the author switching the narrative point of view, at random, and inserting an array of emotions into a character (Kiriya), who for all intents and purposes, doesn't actually exist anymore. Further, the notion that a soldier-of-fortune would lose his locus of survival upon achieving a previously regarded "great" accomplishment is a mark of terribly feeble character building.

This novel is a breeze to read but ultimately lacks the cogent plotting required for readers to feel as naturally invested in killing Kiriya or enduring the attack of a railgun as, say, they did when ducking behind the ruins of a desiccated village to survive the second or third Legion assault of the day. That's the difference between the current volume and the original. In the first volume, survival and good health were never guaranteed measures of success. Now they are conveniences allotted to the consistently lucky . . . and in EIGHTY-SIX #3, Shin and his crew are a very, very lucky lot.

There remain all the problems of the author's previous works (poor pacing, unequal and confusing narrative points-of-view, incomprehensibly designed mecha) plus a few new wrinkles (chatty AI, melodrama, philosophizing survivor's guilt, horribly drawn maps). It's also unfortunate the novel's original political current has completely vanished at this point. But, even though the bad is fairly bad, the good is still pretty good. When the author gets down to it, scenes at the heart of battle remain one of the novel's core elements. Shin, as always, remains a badass. That's fun, too. But that's all.

This one was GREAT. We've got a massive, overwhelming murderbot offensive against all fronts, and a new weapon that can destroy cities from hundreds of kilometers away. A desperate suicide mission to take out the weapon while basically the entirety of humanity's remaining forces launch a huge counteroffensive to draw attention away from the suicide mission. There is some very, very strong character work near the end for Shin, who has really been needing someone to metaphorically smack him awake for 3 books now, and another pretty heart wrenching ending. The previous book was a bit slow, but this one picks back up with a vengeance. I really, really need to check out that anime.

THAT ENDING! WHO DOESN'T LOVE THAT ENDING??? my heart is so warm reading it 😭🥰
This book is a mix of intensity and heartwarming scene, we get to see how they're struggle they to through with their new life and their growth too, how intertwined they are.
The author promise the next book would be a light story so... I'm glad about that, let's see how light it is.

Run through the Battle Line,末代女帝堂堂登場,要糾結戰場上哪來十歲小孩也太遲了!

OK so this one was long-winded. Since it was part of the adaptation for the anime, I skimmed through it again. I liked how you're seeing Shin's fight, and right at the end, the reunion was wondrous after the slog of a troop they'd gone through.

Recomendado 100% 😍

The second part of Run Through the Battlefront was a bit more tedious and repetitive in its descriptions. Since the author was trying to be too introspective of Shin's thoughts, it came off as trying a bit too hard to sound philosophical and at the same time, her diving into the details of all the machines was also a bit distracting from the emotions and action of the book. However, it was still an enjoyable volume, especially the ending and I'm truly looking forward to volume 4, hoping that it'll be able to give me a similar excitement to volume 1.

wow, just wow

although it was expected, it was heartbreaking to finally get confirmation that shin kept going to the battlefield to die. i’m so glad he’s slowly learning to love himself and not feel so burdened by responsibilities

also i CALLED IT !!! lena was the one who ended up helping shin fight kiri ahhh

and ofc let’s not forget that shin and lena finally had their reunion 2yrs after he said “we’re off, major”, expecting to die 😭 and it’s the first time they’re meeting face-to-face !!!!!

“this isn’t the first time we’ve met. although, i suppose it is the first time we’re meeting face-to-face.”
“it’s been a while, handler one. my name is shinei nouzen: a captain of the federacy military and former leader of the spearhead squadron.”

“…i’ve always, always chased after you.”
the smile in his red eyes deepened.
“i know.”
“and i finally caught up to you.”
“you did.”
for some reason, it didn’t feel like it had been that long since she’d heard his serene voice. she took his extended hand with both of hers. the tears she’d held back until now finally flowed freely, but her earnest smile never wavered. she’s thought she would never get to speak these words aloud, but she could finally say them now.
“from this day forth, i, too, will fight by your side.”

Yuh, Yuh, Yuh... this is that banger!!!

Honestly, no over exaggeration needed, this book is amazing from the fight texts, to the character development, and even past that to the well analyzed and beautiful machinery. The story itself is a deep one that uplifts you, inspired you, saddens you, shocks you and even submerses you to the point of no Escape. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes action, adventure, and of course the underdogs uprising. There’s only one thing that irritates s but also entices me the same amount and that’s the main characters continuing self conflict. You’ll love it so much you’ll hate when it ends.

FINALLY

""Her expression turned utterly astonished. Lena’s large silvery eyes
widening in surprise, she looked up at the young man who presented
himself to her. A boy roughly her age, barely old enough to have
recently graduated from the special officer academy but already
promoted twice to receive the captain’s rank insignia on his collar. His
black Onyx hair and crimson Pyrope eyes. His white, handsomely
sculpted face.
Lena never did know his face. The quality of the picture she had was
too rough and distant to make out anyone’s features. But his voice…
That serene, gentle voice, which was somehow pleasant despite being so
curt…
“……Shin…?”
Sure enough, the boy broke into a wry smile.
“It’s the first time you’ve called me by that name. Yes, it’s me, Major
Milizé.”
“You’re…alive…”
“I am. I failed to die again.”
That cold tone. That blunt manner of speaking. The tears welled up
in her eyes before she even knew it, but she restrained them with all her
might. She didn’t want to look away because of her tears. She felt that if
she looked again—if she so much as blinked—he would disappear
again.
So instead, she smiled from the bottom of her heart. Her expression
was probably terribly awkward, but she couldn’t care less about that
right now. She wondered what had happened to him over these two
long years while the Republic had stagnated and eventually collapsed.
How they crossed the Legion’s territories to reach foreign lands and

came to wear the uniform of a different military.
But even without asking, she knew they’d probably kept on fighting
for these two years. Because it was them, the ones who set out on their
road, with the resolve to fight on as their pride.
“…I’ve always, always chased after you.”
The smile in his red eyes deepened.
“I know.”
“And I finally caught up to you.”
“You did.”
For some reason, it didn’t feel like it had been that long since she’d
heard his serene voice. She took his extended hand with both of hers.

*Spoilers*

This series is quickly becoming one of my favorite of all time. This book is where the anime currently ends, so post-Morpho is all new to me. The one thing I have not loved about the Federacy arc so far is the addition of Frederica. She plays the role of the manifestation of the old version of Shin, as well as his driving force to continue forward. Her being forced to grow up quick parallels as well, but even for her age she seems to speak too maturely sometimes. But in general she just does not seem to fit super well to me.

But this is not a huge deal for me and my view is that it does not take away much. The story arc really drove my emotions through the roof and had me hyper anxious. The conversation between Shin and Raiden was gorgeous and great character development. I really like how the author puts multiple perspectives into a single conversation. It allows plot/character development for the main characters to happen while still flushing out non-focal characters.

When the salvo shots came in I could instantly tell from the conversation it was The Major. After a full book of them communicating I guess my brain just realized it. Her back burnered arc during the last two books ending at reaching them was just such a monumental moment. Truly chef’s kiss. I love both her and Shin’s character development, as well as their Romeo and Juliet-ish type relationship. I find it interesting that Shin’s parents were the same way.

I need to also say that the writer giving more insight into the Legion is awesome. We slowly see more, but still know so little. The mysteries keep growing with the additional info we get.

Also the letter. B R U H

I have conflicting feelings about both volumes 2 and 3 of the series. As I said in my review of volume 2, the chronological timeline really threw me for a loop.

Volume 3 continues this flashback that has the Eighty-Six fighting to push back the Legion forces along with the help of the remaining neighboring city-states, the United Kingdom of Roa Gracia and The Alliance of Wald. The main enemy throughout this volume was the new railgun-type Legion, the Morpho.

Of course, the Morpho had some sort of connection to the main cast. It was controlled by the neural network of Kiriya 'Kiri' Nouzen, a distant relative of Shin's and the former personal knight of Rica's before being assimilated by the Legion post-mortem.

So much was happening between the end of volume 1 and it's epilogue that I felt myself trying to just rush to make it through this story to "get to the good part". Knowing that everyone was going to survive did tone down the suspense a LOT. However, the leadup to Lena and Shin finally meeting face to face again was just as satisfying as the first time!

Would it have made a better story if the epilogue in volume 1 was taken out to be a surprise at the end of volume 3? Maybe. But I do think that the epilogue in volume 1 have it a much more satisfying ending than it would have without...

Overall volumes 2 and 3 were good flashbacks to fill the timeskip between the end of volume 1 and it's epilogue. Killing some of the suspense was a slight downer though, so I am looking forward to the following volumes to bring that back with the timelines realigned!

This book continues the story arc started in the last volume showing what's happened to Shin's group after escaping to the Federacy. Volume 2 ended with a bang and this book quickly picks up where it left off and runs with it.

Now granted this is a military sci fi series but even so this volume felt very strictly battle and battle planning focused compared to the previous volume. Not a complaint, just an observation.

Overall this was an excellent novel with fantastic battles, increasing tension, and some good (albeit somewhat repetitive) introspection and character development on Shin's part. With his brother gone and the Republic behind them Shin now finds himself floundering with what to do next. While none of them can rest while the Legion are around, the group still finds themselves asking what exactly they are fighting for? Its not the Republic and never really was. Its not the Federacy either as they have no loyalty to that or the people in it. So what's left for them?

Its a sad, stark look at how the treatment by the Republic has affected them. However, the book makes it clear as it progresses that the Federacy's hands, while not as stained as the Republic's, are still not completely clean when it comes to how they treat the 86 and continue to use them in battle.

Its fascinating to see the Legion's tactics as they change to suit the situation under that of the Shepherds and how different they are from humans who have to worry about financing, materials, and politics. The new development of the Legion's railgun makes for a dangerous and interesting situation and I greatly enjoyed reading this novel.

As this is the "part 2" of volume 2, this feels less like a follow-up and more so volume 2.5, so this is gonna be a review for both.

Run Through the Battlefield was definitely a phenomenal sequel. While I can praise the new characters introduced, namely Shin and Co.'s new father and sister, others I fear had less impact than even the original Spearhead Squadron. Also came the trouble with splitting the story up into two sections, because I kid you not I think I've ran into a handful of moments where the writer went on about the main cast's reason to keep fighting when they didn't have to, or how Shin is trying to find his purpose in life after failing to die with his brother and coming to grips with some form of survivor's guilt. It's interesting, no doubt, but not interesting enough to mention it several times. This definitely needed to just be compiled into one book, even if it would be longer than the first one just to trim out some of the fat.
Overall, I'd give Part 1 4 stars and Part 2 a 3.5.

The plot is just... So damn good and I really grew fond of the characters.

Buut as others have mentioned before, the way the novel is written can get repetitive some times, we know Shin's backstory, we now Frederica's backstory, there's NO need to keep reminding us of their story every time something Important to the story happens!!! It's something the yeets every hope of subtlety out of the window and reduces some reaaallly interesting concepts that could've definetly been treated in a much more profound manner.

Still, it's nothing that some proper editing wouldn't solve... Although I'm not sure that will happen anytime soon hehe

Having said that, I really wish I could someday write a novel as good as this! So, congrats to the author and thank you!

While I dislike how the story unfold with Shin and the spearhead now being part of the federacy and making the more unique world building of the military of the Republic that are more it's own thing got sidelined for the more conventional military culture of the federacy, but I supposed you can't provide a reasonable reason why a barely prepped army such as the Republic able to make do and turn the tide realistically for this kind of story wouldn't it?

The characters in the story however made up for it and I am quite invested in the world other than the Federacy military, I hope, we could see more surrounding it and the characters interaction on a later volume, since the author promise more lighter story for the next volume with more characters interaction to happened.

More like a 3,75 but still so so so good ahhh!
Reading up to Volume 3 is a bit difficult after you've rewatched the anime four times and are just anticipating reading the volume that takes off after the anime ended (the fourth one, hell yeah!).

I love the way Shin is developing. It isn't a straightforward way and fluctuates between a bitter taste of hopelessness and the bittersweet splitseconds of hope.
Who is surprised about his behaviour when all he knows is being left behind by his comrades.

The fighting-scenes are a looot and it's lowkey dreadiiing to get through when you know everything that happens.
What a moment of bliss it is to reach the moment where Shin and the others reunite with Lena though. My heart explodes everytime.

Big recommendation!!

For the sake of the youngster in the armored units, who leads the charge while fully aware they'll likely be the first to be crushed by the Legion. And for the young soldiers who are even further away, who went on to spearhead the operation even though they know it might be a one-way trip.

Honestly thought the AoT comparisons were a stretch, but okay I get it now, especially with Shin out here being a thousand times more likable than Eren lmao.

Plus-minus sih pastinya. Meski anime onlys akan melewatkan cukup banyak detail (apalagi penulisnya peak military nerd), sequencing-nya dibuat lebih linear sehingga nggak sepusing pas baca novel, scoring-nya digarap geng yg sama dgn yg ngegarap AoT (yes, THE Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto.

Random quotes for those nerdy enough to understand:

“If, one day, you make it to our final destination, would you please leave flowers?”

“Return to me, no matter what. Or else, I will destroy this world.”

“I’ve always, always chased after you.”

"When I'm part of the Legion, whose name will I call out?"

“We’re off, Major.”

Okay, this one is seriously so good. (How are these volumes equally surprising and wonderful). The last chunk of this book is sort of everything I've been waiting for? Like – this whole time. But, better, even if it's an absolute tease – it's stunning what happens. While Vol. 1 holds my heart, and Vol. 2 has wonderful context and additional world building, Vol. 3 continued to dangle a carrot and finally gave me a nibble. Onto the next to get more of that freaking carrot. Thanks Asato Asato for your brilliant mind in storytelling.
