Reaper Academy #1

Reaper Academy: Semester One

Rate this book
Hey there. I'm Addison Blake. Orphan, college student, and amateur ghost whisperer.

Or at least I was until I was killed by the soul-eating demon trying to devour my best friend.

Okay, technically the demon didn't kill me. I killed it. But apparently no good deed goes unpunished, because the next thing I knew, I was enrolled at Reaper Academy, a school that trains reapers on how to ferry souls to the afterlife and vanquish the demons who try to eat them. Being that the academy is in the afterlife, I had to leave my body behind. Hence the dead part. But it was either that or be devoured by demons myself, so really, what choice did I have?

As someone who already has experience interacting with ghosts, I figured the academy would be a breeze. The guys are hot, the classes are badass, and I'm starting to feel like I belong. But something sinister walks the halls of Reaper Academy, an evil spirit with a taste for reapers. Students are starting to go missing, and unless my new friends and I can figure out who's behind it, we might very well be next...

If you like sassy heroines standing up to mean girls, ghostly sidekicks with a sense of humor, enemies-to-lovers slow burn romance, and coming of age books, you'll LOVE Reaper Academy. Scroll up and grab your copy today!

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a reverse harem series.

Reaper Academy is the start of a new series. I’ve become hooked on Emily Goodwin's books and this is a great addition. I’ve wanted to read an academy book for a while and when this came up I was excited. It’s what I wanted and it was written by an author I like (Jasmine Walt is new to me). This is a page-turning read and easy to lose sleepover.

Addison Blake is a normal human girl who doesn’t fit in. Little does she know her quirks are because she doesn’t belong. One night her best friend doesn’t come home and Addy goes to look for her. What she discovers is a world she can’t ignore. Now Addison is learning a new way of life in the Reaper Academy. Her human life helps her with some of her studies but her natural talent is what makes her special.

I’m not giving anything away. With this being the first book in a supernatural series there is a lot of information to digest. The story is interesting and will have you hooked to every word. I just hope the wait for the second instalment is short. This book will leave you wanting more.

*I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Reaper Academy had me super curious, leaving me desperate for a new paranormal series that would have me addicted. Unfortunately, I found myself disappointed by this one.

The story was extremely similar to a lot of I have read before, and I found myself working through it making comparisons to other similar books instead of finding things that made it stand out from the crowd. It made it difficult for me to be pulled into it, as I felt like I knew what was coming. In fact, I worked out extremely easily what was coming. There was nothing surprising about the details that were revealed, to the point where I found myself annoyed by the characters being unable to work it out. Add in the fact things could have been resolved in this one book, but a childish excuse was applied and that is why there is going to be a second.

Sure, there were a few moments I enjoyed. However, these were few and far between. This one could have been a three-star rating, but those enjoyable moments were overshadowed by the numerous inconsistencies I found throughout the story. I can handle a couple, but I was pulled out of the story too often when I went into editor mode.

Overall, Reaper Academy does not seem to be for me. I’m sure some will enjoy this one, but I was let down by it.

This book was thrilling and adventurous. I was hooked from page one. I could not stop reading. I did not want to stop reading. I'm a sucker for a good paranormal book and this was beyond good.

Addison Blake gets thrown for a loop when she finds out something truly surprising.... She is a Reaper. Her life that she is living is not the life she was destined for. A chance encounter leads her to a whole new reality. A place where she feels like she belongs. A place where she makes long lasting friendships. She now has a purpose. A purpose that she is surprisingly good at. But something sinister lurks. Something has been happening to the students of the Academy that she is now a student of. It pisses Addy off. It makes her want to fight. With the possible help of her ghost BFF, hot teacher and infuriating tutor she tries to get to the bottom of it. But not every thing or should I say everyone is as it seems.

Addy was super kick ass. I loved her! Who doesn't love a powerful woman? I was so rooting for something to happen between her and a certain professor but alas...
I could feel my heart slowly breaking. I still cannot come to terms with what seems to be going on but I did have my suspicions.

Maxon on the other hand was a very hard person to read. I honestly didn't know what was going on with his relationship or if he feels anything and that is the only part of the book that I had major beef with.

There was no romance in this book and surprisingly, I found this okay. I didn't mind it because the book was so freaking awesome. But the romance was teased a bit and I can't wait to see what comes of it in the books to follow.

Please don't keep us waiting too long. We desperately need more.

A complete and utter Harry Potter rip-off.

Emily and Jasmine did an amazing job with the world building in this story. I loved the Angel-of-Death theme they had going for the back bone of this story.

Addison Blake is not your typical heroine but has managed to rise above the constant bullying. She didn’t understand her gift as a human, but all that changes when Addy comes across an attack on her best friend. Her mind is blown away when she discovers there is entire world filled with people she can relate to, only not all the students and teachers are welcoming.

Reaper Academy is a great start to this paranormal/fantasy series, but don’t get your hopes up if you’re looking for any type of a romantic undertone lying within this story. There’s hardly anything hinted. I was able to predict the ending about 60% in which made the main characters’ constant questioning a little too drawn out, but I was intrigued, by this book, enough to want continue on with the series.

This is a must read! From the time I began reading and right until I finished it, I was hooked. I've read many of Jasmine's books, I have loved every single one, and this one is no different. This new series written with Emily Goodwin is awesome! I am ready to jump right in and read Semester Two, but unfortunately I can't do that since its release date isn't til APRIL next year! Oh....the...wait....lol

Addy immediately pulls you in wanting you to know her story. It starts with her attending Columbia University working towards her Architecture Degree. While in the coffee shop Cass warns her to stop drawing demons, and focus on drawing buildings, or she's going to fail her class. Addy hadn't realized she had been drawing it until she looked down, shocked to see the creature. Cass is Addison's best friend who happens to be ghost. Addy is able to see and speak with Cass and many others that have yet to pass on to the afterlife. One ghost that they speak with daily, Mr. Nitti, has been gone for a week. Cass decides to go wait for him at the cafe in case he returns. Once Addy is ready for bed, she calls out to Cass to have her come home. Cass doesn't return, worried Addy goes out in search of her at the cafe. She finds Cass being attacked by the demon from her sketch. Addy's determined to help save her even though technically Cass is already "dead". Before Addy can get to to the demon, a figure in a cloak with a scythe, appears and attacks the demon. He isn't successful in trying to kill the demon, and is injured by it. Determined to save her friend, she picks up the scythe. Shocked by what he's seeing, the injured dude in the cloak tells Addy that she needs to sever the head of the demon from its body to kill it. With the scythe in hand Addy goes on instinct and is able to kill the demon. When Cass gets to Addy she says we have to get you back into your body. Confused Addy sees that her body is on the ground, and she's no longer a part of it. This is where things get super interesting, and the title of this series comes into play. I was totally hooked on this story and I guarantee you will be as well. The guy, as you will learn, is Maxon. I am totally rooting for his and Addy's friendship to blossom in the next book.

Again Reaper Academy is a must read. I only gave you a bit of the beginning to hopefully interest you into knowing what happens next. Follow Addy on her journey to new beginnings, finding out what it means to be a Reaper while making real friends for the first time in her life. If you love reading this style of genre, then this is the book for you. If you have never read anything by Jasmine I highly recommend checking out her other series once you have finished this book. You won't be disappointed, and hopefully those will help pass the time while we wait for book two to be released!

Paranormal is one of my favorite genres to read so I am always on the look-out for a new book and these two authors teamed up and gave us a great read with the first book in a paranormal series filled with reapers, spells, demons and a bit of romance. Oh and I can’t forget the super hot professor and mysteriously vanishing students.

“You’re telling me that in order to save my soul, I’m going to have to die.”

Addison Blake isn’t your typical college student. Addy can see and communicate with spirits. Like they are everywhere and she’s become so used to them she sometimes forgets they are ghosts and talks to them when people are around. That doesn’t always go over well and so she is considered sort of odd and feels like she doesn’t fit in. The only person she can be herself around is her best friend Cass but she’s a ghost. A kick ass cool ghost that anyone would want for a bestie but still a ghost. One night everything gets crazy and Addy saves Cass from a soul eating demon. There’s a reason she can see spirits and has all these crazy abilities she couldn’t explain. Apparently she’s a reaper and told she needs to make a decision whether she is willing to leave the life she has always known or to embrace her destiny.

“Either take up the scythe and embrace your destiny as a reaper, or allow yourself to be devoured by demons.”

Addy ends up at Reaper Academy where she will train to become a reaper, practice magic, transport souls, save the world, you know that sort of thing. All in a typical days work at the academy. When she arrives she’s paired up with Max as sort of her unwilling mentor. Soon they start working together to try and figure out what is happening to some of the students at the academy. Max puts off the vibe at first that he doesn’t want Addy around but he really is a good guy and respects her and her unique abilities. Addy is kick ass and finally feels like she belongs somewhere after years of feeling like she was an outsider.

“I was born a human and died to become a reaper. Maybe it was all for a reason. Maybe I was meant to come here at this exact time, so I can stop whatever is lurking in the halls of Reaper Academy.”

I really did enjoy this book and can’t wait to see what happens in semester two. I did have a few problems with the second half feeling a little rushed. It was going at a really good pace and all the sudden it felt like full speed ahead. I just felt like the authors were maybe rushing through too many parts. Overall it was a great read and the authors gave us a fantastic start to a new PRN series that has me looking forward to the next book!

***ARC received in exchange of an honest opinion***

Reaper Academy: Semester One is the first book in the new series by collaborating authors Jasmine Walt and Emily Goodwin.

The story is different and I enjoyed it, but I do have some issues with it. I love stories that are set in schools and academies. But the Reaper Academy had too many similarities with Hogwarts for my tastes. There was the selection, the Houses, the different colors, a "sports" championship, the House's competition...I know the story is completely different (although there are a few other similarities I'm not mentioning so I don't give spoilers), but these details hit way too close to home for me. They were very familiar.

That being said, I enjoyed the story and the characters, specially Addie and Maxom. Some parts were a bit basic, but I need to see how things will play out, because even with that I enjoyed reading this book. I already have a few theories and now I'm curious to how things will spam after this first book.

The juri is still out, but I believe I will enjoy the next installment and I will wait for it to form a complete opinion. I wasn't overly impressed, but I wasn't super disappointed either, so I'm still in the fence about it. Let's see if Maxom will captivate me more and if Addie is truly badass.

If you like stories set in supernatural schools, with hot guys, badass classes and that sort of thing, you'll enjoy this read.

I just finished this book and all I can say is that I want more! When I saw that the Pre-Order for book 2 was already out I got super excited, but when I saw it was in April 2020, I almost threw my kindle across the room!😂

But for real, Reaper Academy: Semester One is SO FREAKING GOOD! If you like New Adult Paranormal Romances (ish), then this series is going to be a big hit for you. It was a little light on the romance, because it seemed to be setting up the world more than anything- and it was a LOT to set up. This book is action packed, with a creative world and story and VERY interesting characters! Addy is the bomb, I love how loyal she is and is quite a spitfire for being thrust into an unknown world, there is definitely something different about her that keeps you super curious. The guys in the story are very different though and some HUGE bombs are dropped making you feel not only curious, but a little uneasy about what is to come next.

All in all, I cannot wait for Semester Two to see how in the world things play out after reading the ending. I won't say it is a cliffhanger, but just enough for you to be like "wait wait?! No I need more"! 5 stars from this paranormal book loving girl!

PS: HUGE thanks to Emily Goodwin, Jasmine Walt, and Social Butterfly PR for allowing me an ARC to read and review the book honestly!

OMG Reaper Academy is every YA paranormal romance lover dream book. If you are a Harry Potter fan you will love this story. There are so many similarities but there is definitely more action and intense sexual tension between students and between students and teachers.

Addy is a orphaned girl who soon realizes she is more special than your average human. She can see and speak with ghosts and all that leads to an adventure of self discovery that she will never forget.

This book is filled with comedy, mystery, catty magical fights, and kick ass action.

This is the first book I've read from both authors and I am hooked. I will be patiently waiting for the next installment. These ladies have a new fan in me.

I was totally surprised by how much I loved this book! Reaper Academy is not what I normally would pick up but am so glad I had the opportunity to read it! I was hooked from page one and couldn't put it down. Talk about an awesome twist on the whole Angel of Death with constant action and intriguing characters.

Addison "Addy" is a human who finds out that she is a reaper and can either head to Reaper Academy to be trained or die. Since she has nothing left tying her to Earth, she chooses to go and see what it is all about. She finds she has a lot of natural abilities and finally fits in when she hasn't in the past. There is a lot of mystery surrounding students going missing and Addy makes it her mission to get figure out who is taking them. I cannot wait for book 2!

*Please if you have reaper/ghosts/underworld/demon recommendations tell me.*

I knew that it was professor Dal! That pervert, every interactions was 🤢. I hate student-teacher relationships even if it's just attraction.

'A whimper nearly escapes me when he brushes his thumb across my lower lip, and I only just manage to stop myself from darting out my tongue to taste him.'

If it wasn't a professor and his student I would have totally thought it was hot but it is and it makes me want to puke.

And for my opinion of the second potential love interest, he's boring and I don't like thats he's taken. Even if it's by force but at least it's better then the professor.

But overall it's still a decent book if you over look "romance" bits. I liked the academy and the lessons and if you are like me and came for the reaper part it was way better than some of the reaper books I've read. If you want a really good reaper book there's Dark Hunter by Melody Rose but it's not an academy book.

Thoroughly, thoroughly average.
The writing style was pretty enjoyable, but the actual story is too reminiscent of books like harry potter and other academy romance books. The resemblance to Harry Potter is TOO STRIKING in my opinion. The "houses", the common rooms, the "sorting", the specialized sport etc.

I’ve read Emily Goodwin books before and they were wonderful so I assumed this one would be good, but I was completely disappointed. The story was so simple and annoying the problem could’ve been solved easily. I felt like this book was created for elementary kids cause of how simple the plot was.

I usually like Jasmine's work, but this one I couldn't stomach.

1) The present tense narration is akward. It just doesn't work.
2) There's little in the way of character development before the MC is thrust into the world of the Reapers. We only know that her parents are dead, she has bully at school, she's poor, and she has no friends. We don't know WHY she was seeking an architecture degree. We don't know WHY she has no friends. We don't know WHY she's broke; Her father left her with the means to seek a private school education, but she can't afford to eat a decent meal?
3) She accepts "dying" with very little concern. "Oh hey, you're gonna be a reaper, but you have to die first.", "I'm not sure how I feel about that, but OK."
4) When she gets to the Academy, it rips off Harry Potter. I stopped reading when the headmistress mentioned their version of the House Cup.

Ok, so let's say it : it was not bad... but, because there is a but, I read it just after Harley Merlin and the Secret Coven and it is sooo similar that I was like, "Am I reading the same book??"

1/ Girl has no parents or family, lives her life alone.
2/ Boy come in the human world to hunt a monster.
3/ Discover a girl with power (which is supposedly impossible) who helps him kill/capture the monster.
4/ She must enter the magical world, no choice.
Even the relationship between the 2 heroes is similar...

So yeah, I only read the first book of the two series, but the beginning doesn't make me want to read the rest... I'll probably continue with Harley Merlin, sorry.

HOLY HELL this was such an exciting start to a new series by a dynamic duo! I have read a lot of Emily Goodwin, so I already know I'm addicted to her, but this is the first time that I've read Jasmine Walt, and I feel like I was missing out big time! These two talented authors mesh perfectly together penning Reaper Academy: Semester One, and I'm completely & utterly hooked! This is the story of Addison, aka Addy, Blake who knew she was different, was lonely, but accepted she was considered odd. She lost her parents too early in life, has no friends except a spirit/ghost named Cass. It's when Cass is in danger from what turns out to be a demon, that she comes into some powers. Of course, it took a couple more demon attacks before she actually learned more information, as it turns out that she's a powerful reaper which stuns everyone, since she never had any training before she took out 3 demons, not to mention she was from the human realm which was unheard of. So, off she goes to Reaper Academy to learn more & actually train as the reaper she's meant to be. And it's awesome that she finally finds her people, so she's no longer that oddball person who is a loner. I don't want to go into more details as I've said enough for everyone to be teased by the epic goodness this paranormal story really is, and I'm really not a paranormal kind of girl. There are some big twists & turns, so I dropped loud f-bombs throughout, and it did end on a cliffy, which I knew was going to happen so I was a tiny bit prepared. Now, I simply CANNOT WAIT for more of this next level addiction which came out of the blue, so I'll just end with HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDING TO ALL!

Really good read

Addison Blake, Addie for short, is a college student working on a degree in Architecture. She noticed somewhat early in life that she could see and speak to ghosts. In fact, her best friend is a ghost. This ability sets her apart in the regular mortal world and she never quite feels like she fits in. One bully in particular made her school age years pretty miserable. One day she encounters a demon, and a strange young man who says she is a Reaper. While she initially blows him off and does not believe him, subsequent encounters with a demons and another reaper/professor from Reaper academy ultimately sees Addie at Reaper academy training to become a Reaper. She has a lot to learn and is already behind the other students. With the help of some new friends Addie blossoms and finds a home. But, this home is endangered when students disappear and do not return. I was sucked in by this book right away. I found Addie very likable and I liked being part of her learning journey while she learned about her new skills and her new role. There is a lot of foreshadowing and I really look forward to subsequent books. Be warned, while there is a resolution of the current arch in this book , there is a bit of a cliff hanger in that a very disturbing fact is revealed or at least heavily alluded to at the end and which sets us up for the next book. I highly recommend this book.

What do you get when you combine urban fantasy, reapers, demons, and sexy characters?

OBVIOUSLY, you get Reaper Academy, an all new paranormal urban fantasy by authors Emily Goodwin and Jasmine Walt.
I’ve been a long time fan of the many urban fantasy books floating around AmazonKindle. If you aren’t sure if its urban fantasy the covers will always give it away! Kickass looking characters wielding magic and fantasy worlds are key points and I am in love with Reaper Academy’s entire cover, Addie is a force to be reckoned with!

Emily and Jasmine have come together to give a fresh take on the usual dragons, witches, imps, and angels in this genre. Instead of a cast fighting to stay alive, well everyone is sort of already dead anyway. We get an Academy worthy to be compared to Hogwarts and a crew that is personable, sexy, and at times downright hilarious.

With an unidentified threat lurking about the Reaper Academy, Semester 1 sets up what is sure to be a stellar series filled with enough fantasy and action to send you straight to the afterlife.
