English both by name and nationality, Charlotte hasn’t permitted emigration to the Netherlands to change her essential Britishness. She writes colourful fantasy novels over copious quantities of tea, and rarely misses an opportunity to apologise for something. Spanning the spectrum from light to dark, her works include the Draykon Series, Modern Magick, The Malykant Mysteries and the Tales of Aylfenhame.
Overall, I have enjoyed this series. I am not sure how the author comes to the term "Book", though, because they seem to me to be shorter than other books. I intend to look at my stats to determine if this only perception on my part.
I like that the main character is not obsessed with finding a mate (as so many series are). She is a fully formed character in her own right, and has plenty of conversations without a male character in the mix.
There are some really clever notions in the series, such as unicorns loving chips (french fries). So much fun!
I think the third volume is my favourite so far. I still feel like there could be a little bit more character development within all the action and this one felt more of a fast pace so that would be probably very difficult to do.
I really love the characters in these books! Especially Ves! I thought that this collection was the last book in the series, but it ended with a continuing storyline. Still, I'm looking forward to reading more of Ves & Jay's adventures.
I find that I have just been sucked into this series. The characters are so quirky and interesting that you cannot help but love them. This is also not one of those "magician is all-powerful and unbeatable" series. Ves makes a LOT of mistakes and then she deals with the consequences. I am really glad that book 7 and 8 are together because they both take place in the fifth Britain. You really want to read these books in series because each book builds on previous adventures. When the current adventure is wrapping up, the need for the next adventure/assignment is introduced and you can't wait to get on to the next book.
