Tsugumi Ōba (Profile in Japanese: 大場 つぐみ), born in Tokyo, Japan, is a writer best known for the manga Death Note. His/her real identity is a closely guarded secret. As stated by the profile placed at the beginning of each Death Note manga, Ōba collects teacups and develops manga plots while holding his knees on a chair, similar to a habit of L, one of the main characters of the series.

There is speculation that Tsugumi Ōba is a pen name and that he is really Hiroshi Gamō. Pointing out that in Bakuman the main character's uncle was a one-hit wonder manga artist who worked on a gag super hero manga, very similar to Gamō and Tottemo! Luckyman in all aspects. Also that the storyboards drawn by Ōba greatly resemble Tottemo! Luckyman in style.

I Linkin Park

Peace Off

ngl, i was pretty excited going into this novel due to the way i basically was blown away by the original death note series; however, as a lot of reviewers before me said, this novel was lackluster in comparison to the original series and didn't constitute the same level of engagement, excitement, and absorption into the plot as the original series. the story includes references to the original characters and plot line, briefly referencing light yagami's reign of terror as kira before as well as including ryuk, near, and the task force, now reduced to mogi, aizawa, and matsuda, who is still pleasantly his naive self, even if this role is overexaggerated in the novel to a vaguely unrealistic degree (as we saw him somewhat grow out of this in the anime/manga...)

i can see how it felt a bit sad and uncomfortable to many readers that near was referred to as "L" throughout the storyline, and a lot of fans before were unhappy about this, feeling that they treated him as a replacement to the morally and emotionally complex and widely stanned original L from the death note series. i wasn't too fond of that either, but they added in a lot of scenes where near either quoted lawliet or acted similar to him as homage to the original. regardless, it was really refreshing to see all the characters still holding onto their original personalities from the series, even if it was overdone to a degree.

minoru tanaka was very different to light in that he refused to use the notebook for evil and, well, was a much overall nicer person. he had a naturally generous and easygoing nature and was a bit more precocious and innocent, as he wasn't as sure of himself or competitive like l*ght was, despite minoru still being of high intelligence himself. at first, the modernity of his appearance caught me off guard, what with the hypebeasty-sports jacket and the eboy curly-on-top-undercut just because of the overabundance of obnoxious teenage boys with that exact style nowadays... but in its own way, I guess it could be said that because of this detail, the series was surprisingly true to the modern timeframe, even if it includes regrettable fashion choices, lol. minoru's a sweet enough individual that I can't hold these style choices against him too much though rip. i felt that was really sudden and unnecessary, which frustrated me, but in a way it was necessary in order to enhance the death note lore and enlighten the reader on the true power of the notebook, which is expanded on in this novel a bit.

& the art was so forking incredible and realistic and it amazes me how so many frames, all illustrated with so much precision and detail, could be put out without being rushed or flawed. mad respect to the illustrators there just for that, the art in the original death note mangas is just as spectacular and i'm glad to say this installment did not disappoint in that department.

also, no thoughts,, head empty, just near with long hair... he looked so freaking pretty here, i mayyy or may not have given a better rating just because of that... ;)

yeah... brb changing my pfp rn :,)

summary:
this one shot follows the story of a modern-day teenager, minoru tanaka, who is visited by the shinigami ryuk - the same shinigami who possessed light yagami, the protagonist of the preceding death note storyline. when ryuk offers him the power to kill anyone in the world by simply writing their name, a power which had uprooted the world in the decade past, minoru chooses to use his new ability to his advantage while still retaining his morality and without taking any human's life, ultimately making the decision to sell the notebook, an action which soon spirals into an international race to obtain the power for the sake of patriotism and honor. however, just when things seem to be going smoothly for minoru, an unexpected turn of events leads to a morbid fate...

final thoughts:
overall, this oneshot was a bit longer than expected, but the storyline is paced in such a way that it doesn't seem to span across the 88 pages that it does. the art was absolutely impeccable, as always, but content wise, it doesn't pass a subpar ranking, especially when compared with the original death note series. nevertheless, it was exciting to be reintroduced to the beloved and acclaimed world of death note lore.

it was really funny to see all the trump slander and i think the disdainful actions he took in the story are very believable if such a situation were to occur in real life. honestly, i was really entertained to learn that tangerine man was being introduced to a death note spinoff, especially since he was being added just for the sake of poking fun at him, especially since, yknow, this was written in japan and all lol. it's still so hilarious to think that trump is canonically a character and gets roasted in one of the most popular anime series, or at least a spinoff of it. apparently, some people had a problem with it and were calling it a sort of fAnSeRvIcE to cater to some 'sJw LiBeRaLs-' by the way, there were only at the most 4 panels that 'slandered' him, (even though, let's be real, he would need all the books in the world to slander him to the degree he deserves lol-) just saying, if this small amount of social/political irony towards an universally recognized corrupt leader is enough to upset you, you're the only snowflake here :))

overall, even though the story itself was kinda meh and was mildly disappointing, it was fun to be introduced to the new characters as well as recognize the old ones, and the storyline, while lacking and slightly rushed, wasn't too bad and was actually fun to witness at times.

thanks for reading and for being there to motivate me to write reviews, lol. see ya'll soon for another review, hopefully! ♡

Whenever I get back into an anime/manga phase, I always get the urge to rewatch/reread some Death Note (or Tokyo Ghoul) every. single. time!
So I went for this special one shot that I never got around to reading, set 2 years after the events of the manga series ended.
Ughhh I miss *actual* L! :/
Ryuk meets Donald Trump 😅

The art style is so nostalgic - I will reread the main series one day. Maybe will finally get more physical copies beyond the first Black Edition, or just on the Shonen Jump app where I read this!

It was great diving into the Death Note world again. I loved seeing some old characters! Like, NEAR?? He’s all grown up!! And he really didn’t give a fuck at the end there. lol I loved that Minoru (the new MC) found a new loophole that just royally pissed off the Shinigami King. The ending is kinda of sad, but what could you expect from Death Note? Overall, this was a fun one-shot.

Whohoooo death note is back!

Well for just a One-shot but damn it's good to have it back.

Ryuk is up to no good as he wants to have his death note spread to someone and them do some evil ass things. Sounds fun right? Well it is, because he decides to drop it into the lap of someone new with a VERY different motive than Light. This catches on as N, now the new L, must hunt down A-Kara.

While I did really enjoy most of this, and the art is fantastic, the story feels a tad rushed. Why? Because it's told in less than 80 pages. I wish we had atleast a whole book worth of the story. However, some nice twist and turns, a special cameo that made sense, and the feel of Death Note still being interesting is always nice.

I'd go for a new series even. A 4 out of 5.

I think in 88 pages the author was able to wrap up this cult classic in one shot with enough plot twist.

Yeah there wasn't any character development but hey it was only 88 pages.
It was amazing for 88 pages

Okay...

'The human who uses the notebook can neither go to Heaven nor Hell.'

After kira's era, Ryuk appears again in the Human world to give the Death note to another human. What will this Human do with thi's 'Kira power' in the age of technology and internet? And will he repeat the actions of Light or define a new way of using this Book.
I was shocked by how much i enjoyed this. I usually don't like it when anyone mess with my favorite things (Death note being one of them). But this One shot manga is really good and entertaining and i liked it veryyy much!

Highly recommended if you're a death note fan.

❤️ Thank you baby for the recommendation ❤️❤️
