Rate this book
It's time for one last mission...

Ten years have passed since the end of the Titan Conflict. Now, the Titanborn stand on their own. And even though the war might be over, tensions between them and Earth have never been higher.

Malcolm Graves has spent the last decade living on Titan, the last place he'd ever expected to retire. But he'd made a vow to his daughter: protect her son Alann until his dying breath.

But when an old rival on Earth makes a threat against Alann's claim as heir to the throne of Titan, it's time to dust off the old pulse pistol and silence him. One problem. After he sets off to return to Earth for one last time, he awakens from cryo to find a stowaway. Desperate to see the worlds beyond Titan after spending his young, privileged life sequestered there, Alann had snuck aboard.

Together, they'll have to survive the perils of Earth as enemies old and new gun for the future King of Titan. One wrong move, and it'll be war again. A war that, this time, humanity may not survive.

Join ex-collector Malcolm Graves on one last mission in the fifth and final installment of the Children of Titan Series. To protect his grandson, there is nothing he won't do.

Rhett Bruno grew up in Hauppauge, New York, and studied at the Syracuse University School of Architecture where he graduated cum laude.

He has been writing since he can remember, scribbling down what he thought were epic short stories when he was young to show to his parents. When he reached high school he decided to take that a step further and write the “Isinda Trilogy”. After the encouragement of his favorite English teacher he decided to self-publish the “Isinda Trilogy” so that the people closest to him could enjoy his early work.

While studying architecture Rhett continued to write as much as he could, but finding the time during the brutal curriculum proved difficult. It wasn’t until he was a senior that he decided to finally pursue his passion for Science Fiction. After rededicating himself to reading works of the Science Fiction author’s he always loved, (Frank Herbert, Timothy Zahn, Heinlein, etc.) he began writing “The Circuit: Executor Rising”, The first part of what he hopes will be a successful Adult Science Fiction Series.

Since then Rhett has been hired by an Architecture firm in Mount Kisco, NY. But that hasn’t stopped him from continuing to work on “The Circuit” and all of the other stories bouncing around in his head. He is also currently studying at the New School to earn a Certificate in Screenwriting in the hopes of one day writing for TV or Video Games.

A Victory Lap

After completing Titan’s Fury, I was surprised that there was a fifth entry in the Children of Titan series. Titan’s Legacy jumps ten years forward and shows us the consequences of four novels. It tries to wrap up a few loose ends, resolve some stunted character arcs, and rekindle a lost flame, but mostly ends up being a long-winded epilogue that feels self-indulgent.

In a series of near-comic coincidences, Malcolm Graves embarks on a solo adventure with his grandson. This journey allows him to reconnect with various characters from past novels, allowing readers to see how they flourished in the new world order while allowing our hero to say goodbye. As the action ramps up, the former bounty hunter is so far out of his prime that the joke wears thin. As a stay-at-home granddad, it beggars belief that he can throw down with younger malcontents and black ops military, but there are several sequences where he’s still top of the food chain.

As the antagonists reveal themselves, one gets the feeling the series is running on fumes. The author laid the groundwork in Malcolm and Kale’s debut novels, and everything since was the result of putting it all in a pressure cooker. As such, Titan’s Legacy is very thin on new characters, and with so much resolved in Titan’s Fury, resorts to bringing back minor ones. Sadly, the sole POV narrative fails to build these characters into fearsome opponents. There’s little emotional turmoil as the author has forgotten how to outrage my sensibilities through Earthers bullying weaker Titanborn, instead resorting to the same-old violence, death, and threat of war.

Titan’s Fury is optional reading. There’s nothing exceptional about the story. All the surprises, all the revelations, they were in the last novel. Fans are indulging the author’s desire to pen a coda for his prized lead. Nevertheless, it’s a well-paced, entertaining ride into the sunset with a superb character.

Recommended with Reservations.

Series Overall Spoiler-Free Thoughts

★★★★☆ Titanborn (Children of Titan, #1)
★★★★☆ Titan’s Son (Children of Titan #2)
★★☆☆☆ Titan’s Rise (Children of Titan, #3)
★★★☆☆ Titan’s Fury (Children of Titan, #4)
★★★☆☆ Titan’s Legacy (Children of Titan, #5)

Children of Titan is at its best when describing small stakes; where bullies abuse their power over the innocent. It set out a vision of the future that is nothing to aspire to, and gave us a pair of very flawed individuals making the best of a terrible situation. Unfortunately, the second of half of the series tries to save humanity, and our characters aren’t up to the job.

★★★☆☆ - Recommended with Reservations.

What a fantastic finale! The first book that I read in this series ended with our main protagonist, Malcolm Graves, apparently dying. Well, he didn't, and we had several more wonderful books set in this fascinating world have kept me happy. This last book is set a little into the future from the last one, with another difference being that the previous ones showed us two sides of the conflict, and it was sometimes difficult to know where your sympathies lay. This is much more from the viewpoint of Malcolm, and his mounting personal difficulties make for a spellbinding read. Do things come full circle?
I wish that this author would write more in this world, but I don't think my wish will be granted. I thoroughly recommend this book to you - it could be read as a standalone book but you will get so much more satisfaction from reading through this compelling series from the start.

4+ star book that acts as an add-on to the 5+ star "Children of Titan" series!

It is more than fitting that RC.Bruno 'bookends' his magnificent series with a final (??) adventure focusing on Malcolm Graves. Though our favorite collector is no longer the sure-footed (fisted?) anti-hero of Book 1, he is still one of the most human - with all that entails - characters that I've met in any genre. The fact now that he's added 'extremely loving and doting grandfather' to his resumé doesn't change any of that.

Honestly though, Book 5 wasn't NEEDED per se to make this series awesome. In fact, I found that freed up Bruno to give the book a kind of 'these are bits I left out... including the kitchen sink' vibe that worked in most cases like a charm! There was a definite 'well, I didn't see that coming!' joy to reading this book that. And while every aspect didn't fit in exactly with the flow of what's come before, there was at very least an undeniable and great feeling of nostalgia if not closure to many open aspects of the previous 4 tomes. Put it this way: there's enough wrapped up to satisfy the stingiest reader and there's enough left open where I have to admit that I wouldn't be surprised to see a part VI some day. Especially with that very last sentence, which otherwise makes no sense at all!

Bottom-line: Bruno's books were the absolute highlight for me for the first week of April 2020 (and beyond) that I read from Page 1 Book 1 to the final word of Page whatever Book 5 with barely a pause! And with this damn quarantine in place, that meant all that much more to me! If I could pay the ultimate compliment it would be that I want to revisit these books one day and enjoy this great scifi adventure one more time! And the way my memory is fading, heck that should be just about as fun as this first time! Enjoy!

A hard but fitting end

Titan's Legacy is the 5th and final story in Rhett Bruno's marvelous Children of Titan series. A decade after Titan becomes an independent power in the Sol system, much has changed, but not enough. With the ending of the corporations, the silence of weapons - an uneasy peace coexists with continued hostilities between Titanborn and Earther. Behind the scenes, players long thought removed from the game reappear; some seeing restoration, some seeking vengeance, and one of their prime targets is Alann Trass, future King of Titan. He's Malcolm Graves grandson and Malcolm's mission now is to be Grandpa. But a threat to reignite the Earth-Titan war, and the kidnapping of Alann send the old Collector on one last mission. It's one last chance to tie up old loose ends, make amends, set right old wrongs, and give Alann and Titan, and Earth, a chance to do better. It's at times hard to read this-- the body count is sky-high, the old Collector ain't all he used to be, and the ending is bittersweet. Still, this is the fitting closure to a long tale of human ambition, human frailty, and human courage. Rhett Bruno's unfailing ability to balance the world-shattering and the mundane, the polemic and the personal, leaves me in awe. Again. This has been a voluntary ARC review.

Malcolm Greaves, presumed dead, has spent the last 10 years living on Titan with his 9 year old grandson Allan Trass, who he adores. Allan's parents are dead and Greaves lovingly watches over him. Allan will one day grow up to be the leader of his people but for now, he is under the protection of his great aunt. Greaves a former "Collector" for a defunct corporation tells his grandson stories of his adventures as a Collector, a type of bounty hunter, and plays VR games to train him in fighting strategies. Graves is old and frail but is told but must serve on one last mission to save his grandson's legacy and prevent war between Earth and Titan. Initially this is a story of Greaves going to Earth to right a wrong that could destroy humanity but this story becomes so much more. The bond between Malcolm and Allan is real and unbreakable. The character development is superb. The action is gripping and glued me to this book until the end. R.C Bray is excellent as always as a grumpy old man and superb and a nine year old child. I want to read everything written by Rhett C. Bruno. So glad I stumbled upon this author. A fitting end to a great series.

This was a free advance copy. I had read none of the previous books in this series, but had read some of Rhett C. Bruno’s other books. There is a short timeline in the front of the book, which I read, and it caught me up to date for this book. Didn’t really have any problems knowing what was happening in the book. Previous characters make an appearance, a little fill in is done so I had no problems knowing who they were. The main character was good, the plot had a couple of parts where maybe reading the previous books in the series would have helped. Nothing that really took away from this story. Writing style was very readable. I did not like the ending, but it did leave room for a sequel.

Sure. 5 stars. Interesting and exciting. Didn't feel like it was simply some afterthought book the author wrote when series was seemingly over just to make some more money. Felt natural. Heck. Suppose could potentially develop into a 6th and 7th book kind of naturally if desired by author. I have a few books which are the latest additions to a few/several book series which I have been sitting on for months easily by now. This series grabbed/grabs me in such a way that I got to it within a week of acquiring it. Knew I wouldn't be disappointed. And R.C. Bray as a narrator is always a good thing.

This book picks up years down the road from the end of Titan's Fury. In it, we get a glimpse of the outcome of all that went into the first four books.

Told from Malcolm's point of view, we get to see how time and being a grand father has changed him.

There are plenty of surprises as various characters move on the road to redemption.

If you've read the other books in the series, you need to read this one. If you haven't, you've been missing out, so go pick up all 5.

An Astounding Read

And so the final book of the series is a great piece of writing giving a lot to the series overall and perhaps even my heart as it all ties everything up very neatly and gives me that sadness at the same time knowing the series is now over.
Always will the character Malcolm and Co and what he did for the universe Rhett brought to an exacting and action filled life stand with me.

Children of Titan book 5, hmmmmm not sure how this series is going to continue which is a shame!

Do not get me wrong I like this book (audiobook - R.C Bray is Malcolm Graves), I just wasn't as much of a Wow this is awesome as the previous books. Plus Alan the grandson, what an annoyance, couldn't warm to him at all.

I shall continue reading/listening to the series as I love the overall world building and story line, however this book 5 made me seriously consider continuing.

This series finale to these books was incredible. To follow Malcolm Graves and his companions throughout Sol was an absolute pleasure, and this book wrapped up in the only way it possibly could have, given Malcolm and his Collector ways. Character development was great and this series provided a great balance of adrenaline-pumping action and in-depth background on each of these characters. From ice to ashes..

The darkness rises one last time for Malcom Graves. With his daughter gone, however, Malcom will be damned if he's going to let his grandson pass before him. This finale to the Children of Titan series delivers on a human level that Rhett is famous for. For those who have stuck the journey out to the end, friends, it was well worth it.

Great finish to an awesome series! I don't know how I let this one slip through the cracks. I pre-ordered it and it's been sitting in my library for several months. Glad I came across it! This has been one heck of a great series and this was a perfect ending. Huge thanks to Bruno and Bray for another fantastic book!

Good stuff

I have read all the a titan books to date and while at times I thought they were a little maudlin, I still loved Malcom. Non stop action and realistic plot lines, enjoyed them very much.

A good old fashioned swashbuckling tale!

Book 4 of this series dragged a bit,
but the last book sent the series out with a bang!
Take a chance and read this.

"Home is the people you care for."
Malcolm Graves, the Collector, has lived only on Titan for the past decade. Now this once fierce fighter is old, tired and "living had just gotten so exhausting" playing games with his grandson, their to Titan's throne.
But one more adventure still lies ahead.

A superb conclusion to a really stunningly good series - great story, well written, memorable characters and all superbly performed by R.C.Bray. But if you've read the earlier books, you already know all this, so go read this book now. If you haven't yet started, begin with the Collector, when Malcolm Graves was at the top of his game: you won't regret it if you are a fan of science fiction.

Enjoyable space opera.

I enjoyed this series. A space faring gunslinger type story. There were a few unanswered questions though but this was still an enjoyable read.
