After a bad breakup, all Verity Thayer wants is to spend the next few days moping in her apartment, eating chocolate, and hoping the Universe will leave her the hell alone for a while.
That lasts until a mysterious note arrives in her mailbox:
Your mother didn’t die of cancer. And your father isn’t who you think he is.
With her brother away with his fiancée and Alastair Stone on the other side of the world, Verity sets off on her own to track down the note’s sender.
But finding the secrets of murder and betrayal buried in her past isn’t the worst part. Someone doesn’t want her to know the truth—and they’re willing to kill to make sure she never learns it.
An Unexpected Truth takes place following the novel The Madness Below and the novella Boys' Night (Way) Out.
R. L. King is the author of the Amazon-bestselling urban fantasy series The Alastair Stone Chronicles.
When not doing her best to make life difficult for her characters, she works as a software technical writer for a large Silicon Valley database company.
She also freelances for Catalyst Game Labs, publisher of the popular roleplaying game Shadowrun, where she's contributed fiction and game material to numerous sourcebooks and one full-length adventure, "On the Run," which was included as part of the 2012 Origins-Award-winning "Runners' Toolkit."
Her first novel in the Shadowrun universe, "Borrowed Time," was published in Spring 2015. She's working on her second Shadowrun novel, "Veiled Extraction," which will be released in late 2016 or early 2017.
When not writing or working, she enjoys hanging out with her very understanding spouse and her small herd of cats, and watching way too much Doctor Who.
An Unexpected Truth, a Novella of The Alastair Stone Chronicles by R.L. King
This novella fits between books 20 and 21 of this series. It serves to give a more complete backstory to the character, Verity Thayer. For that, it does a good job. Elements from this novella appear in the next book in the series, and I anticipate will lead to the inclusion of a couple of it's characters in future Stone novels. Verify isn't my favorite supporting character in this series, and I'm sure that colored my opinion of the book.
Having just finished both Verity and Jason's side stories, i am happy to say i enjoyed them both immensely! Jason's Boys night out had me going right up to the end! A great puzzler! Verity's reveal, i cant help wondering, how it will impact future tales! I'm excited to find out! Anyone who loves the Stone universe should read both of these, most definitely!
R.L. King has once again proven what a master wordsmith she is! This story is from Verity's viewpoint and the situations she deals with on her own would have gutted anyone! It was a great read and Verity does the Stone universe justice once again. On a side note, I think Verity should get a pet just like Stan's! hehehe
I really loved this deeper view into Verity's life. It fleshed out her character and left so many possibilities open. I am an old-fashioned romantic so I especially enjoyed the ending. Well done, R.L.King.
A brilliant solo trip down the family road for Verity
At long last Verity is clear of Kyla!!!! & Its great to hear she has more family. Brilliant Novella - sets things up nicely for her & Alastair. Can't wait!!!
R.L. Knocks it out of the park again! I loved learning more about Verity’s back story and my heart was breaking for her at the things she had to deal with...very good short read!
Verity has always been an interesting character with more than enough problems of her own. Now she has what she needs. Family is going to get really good now with Jason and Amber, but let us not forget about Alistair!
Wow! Verity goes through some life changing experiences in this novella. This will definitely definitely change things. It was nice to see things from Verity’s perspective
I loved that this was a solo Verity story. It really have a great look at her character & moved the the relationships amoung characters along. Fun read.
The Alastair Stone Chronicles are one of my favorite series of books. I love visiting his world & experiencing his new adventures, dilemmas, new & old friends, his ingenuity, & his resolutions.
This volume, set after "The Madness Below" and "Boys Night (Way) Out", presents Verity with a series of personal and emotional traumas that leave her in a state of upheaval and disorientation. Finding herself all alone, with no support system available to help her deal with a complete reversal to all she's believed about her past, Verity sets out, on her own, to confront a possibly murderous situation with only a mysterious two sentence hand written note as guide...
