Old gods, new tricks.

Mason Albrecht may have found himself a home in a verdant forest dimension, but danger follows the son of Samyaza wherever he goes. There’s trouble brewing in paradise – literally – and when a familiar, flame-toting magus reappears, it’s with catastrophically explosive consequences.

Familiar allies flock to Mason’s side, but even they can't stem an endless tide of new enemies. But a sartorial sorceress, a time-stopping Scion, and the angel of order are the least of the nephilim’s problems, because the Norse god of mischief has come a-knocking. And Loki needs just one small favor...

Hi, I'm Nazri, a Filipino-Malaysian author based in California. I’m trilingual, but I really only write in English. I can also speak just enough Sindarin and Valyrian to impress absolutely no one. My urban fantasy novels focus on realistic heroes who use wits, style, and their wildly unpredictable magic to (try) and save the day. Think sass and class, while kicking ass.

My influences come from horror and fantasy: HP Lovecraft, Anne Rice, George R.R. Martin, Chuck Palahniuk, Terry Pratchett, and Neil Gaiman. Growing up I was shaped by the Blood Sword, Fighting Fantasy, Lone Wolf, and Grey Star game book universes. I'm also inspired by video games, specifically the Castlevania, Final Fantasy, and Persona series.

TL;DR: I'm a huge nerd. And yes, that's my real hair. I try to donate it to the American Cancer Society as often as I can. Also, have you heard? You can get a free book at www.NazriNoor.com.

Loki has an offer for Mason that sounds too good to be true, and as Mason still needs to find the cash for a cloaking device, he can't refuse.
So Mason, Florian and Sterling - his old buddy from the Boneyard - set out to track down three weapons. But Loki ever the trickster is up to mischief.
Mason is really growing as a character, and we see him discovering more of his powers with help from the Angel Raziel.
I'm really enjoying this series and it was great to catch up with the Vampire Sterling again, as he is one of my favourite characters from the Darkling Mage series.
Right on to the next book.

I'm still getting my mind around Asher as the MC of this spin-off series.

I miss the Boneyard and their camaraderie. I miss the characters I liked from the Lorica. Beatrice Rex doesn't do it for me, neither does the occasional Belphegor, Artemis is fine and I like some Priscilla the Gorilla, but Quilliam J Abernathy plain shits me to tears. And while I do enjoy Florian, he's a sweetie, he always reminds me of Patrick Star. Whenever I read his dialogue or he does something, I can't help it, all I see is Patrick. It's not a bad thing, I happen to like Patrick, but it's... weird.

Raziel is growing on me. Lord knows Mason needs someone to calm him the fuck down at times.

There's action. There's more character development. Mason is developing his skillset. There's humour. There's a cute little cube that I'm looking forward to more page time with. Most of all (in this book) there's Sterling!! I love Sterling. He stole the show when he was on page. He's annoyingly funny - "Uncle Sterling" - he added depth, and he's awesome - just ask him. But I agree, so I don't have to ask him, as a Darkling Mage series devotee I just know.

On to the next book in the series.

4.5 rating. This continues the story with more humor, magic and mayhem. More drama and annoyance for our funny young lead character and his friend. The characters really grow on you. The places they visit are fantastic and horrid much like the other characters. Angels, Demons and everything in between. Recommended!

The second installment of the Sins of the Father, a spin-off from the Darkling Mage series, picks up where the series opener left off. This time, Mason and Florian are tasked with retrieving three weapons for a capricious God, and, let's just say it doesn't go well.

In addition to some new and intriguing additions to the universe, some among the more memorable characters from the Darkling Mage series appear in this installment, making it both fresh and nostalgic at the same time.

All the usual suspects, which I have come to expect from this author, are in order: excellent pacing, world-building, snark, sarcasm, solid (and gradual) character development, and so forth.

But this novel really seems to find its stride. In particular, the narrator (Mason) has a much stronger and clearer voice than in the first novel, and begins to really grow into himself (rather than being simply a reflection of Dustin Graves). While I don't think this is my super-favourite (a certain flatulent character from the Darkling Mage series retains a firm grasp of my heart), it's probably a close second. From the technical side of things, I do believe this is the author's finest work to date.

I am anxiously awaiting Mason's next catastrophe!

I received and ARC through the author.

Nephilim Mason Albrecht is the son of fallen angel Samyaza and danger is always stalking him no matter what he does or wherever he goes. While he has a home in a forest dimension owned by a goddess he still has to come out of it in order to earn money or purchase things. When a familiar flame wielding Magnus appears he knows he is going to have trouble. Thankfully, a familiar friend comes to help Mason but even with other familiar and unfamiliar new friends (including a time stopping Scion) will need everything they have because the Norse god of mischief (Loki) needs help via a small favour and it will have major ramifications. Can Mason keep everyone (including himself) safe and retain his freedom too?

I loved this story which developed the world that Mason now lives in as well as introducing an old character in order to connect his new and old life. I loved the way Mason is growing up and learning more about his abilities as he navigates the world that he currently lives in. Well written and easy to read and comprehend I can't wait to find out what happens to Mason next.

What can I say?

This is my second time reading through this series, and I’m finding I am enjoying it even more this time than I did the first…

That’s saying quite a bit, given how much I did enjoy it, in fact, that first time.

I’m not sure why I never wrote a review, the first time, but I was probably simply anxious to get to the next book, since the series was entirely complete long before I ever began reading it. Still it’s a crime and a shame not to have given my whole hearted endorsement to this series.

This series is a bit more erratic than Dustin’s series was, but then again, Mason is a bit more lost than Dustin was and that’s kind of horrendous when one thinks about it.

If you haven’t read Dustin‘s series and put this book down, and go read that entire series in order, before you begin this one. There is such history amongst these characters that the wealth of subtext and innuendo will be entirely lost if you don’t let’s face it, that’s half the fun of these books. So all I can tell you is get going and ENJOY!

Called to do the tasks of a superhero without even knowing what he is capable of achieving. Apparently, more than he knows, Mason has my admiration for how he stands up to the most formidable assassins of all that is good. He consistently surprises himself and those around him of just how much he can do when he puts his mind to it. His discovery of some new abilities is quite dramatic and enjoyable to see. Yay, Mace. Way to go. You want to cheer him on as he is to me, one of the most likable characters in this series.

Then, another of my favorites from a previous series shows up and voila, we have Sterling. These stories are just so pleasing to me and when I hope something will happen or someone will show up, they do. Nazri Noor, the author has a sense of timing that is never off. He knows his characters well and it feels as if he is one of the gang standing back in the shadows with a smile urging them on to more success.

I really love this next series. Onward it is.

Mason is getting smarter and stronger, but not enough to keep himself out of trouble. Taking a job for Loki to pay for his disappearing garment, he finds he has bit off more than he can chew. He and Florian meet up with an old friend, Sterling from the Boneyard and they get into some rigorous slice, dice, burn and blow up kind of trouble. Nothing is ever as it seems when dealing with gods and demigods. Raziel may have imparted some knowledge to Mason finally and the Lorica shows up in the form of a scion who can stop time and seems to be on his side. Arachne has a appearances and excitement abounds in this second book in this series. Well worth the read for sure. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.

I just love the beginning. Poor Mason. All he wants is to be left alone but that just does not seem to be in the cards for him. So we follow him from one misadventure to the next.
Mason has more growing up to do but what an adventure. Gosh, he is only 18 and it is so much fun following Mason and his life experiences. Of course, those experiences include gods, tricksters, demons, a ‘Whatever It Is’, etc.
I really love how things turned out. Mason may be a bit naive and young, but his heart is in the right place.
What more could you ask for? Oh yes! I could ask for the next book, Morning Star! Can’t wait.

Picking up after the first book in the series (you've read that one, right? if not, you'll want to read it first!) False Gods continues with Mason becoming more sure of himself and landing into even more trouble.

Filled with fast and clever plotting, fun dialogue, and a dash of snark and sarcasm this book is an enjoyable continuation.

While characters from the Darkling Mage series appear, you don't need to have read the series to enjoy this one. But again, highly recommended!

I read an ARC and have chosen to review it.

Mason, nephilium, just wants all the entities to leave him alone.

Mason, Florian, Artemis and Priscilla the Gorilla are back. What a fun and feisty book. Mason has to deal with so much not the least of which is Loki! Raziel, the angel sort of helps or tries to as does a certain demon. We get to see a couple of great characters from Dustin Graves Arcane world. Mason might be Arachne's new sweetling? This book is full of action, humor, honesty and deception. I adore Nazri's books. Definitely a must read.

A great installment in Nazri Norr's new series

I thoroughly enjoyed this new episode in Mason's story. As the storyline progresses so too do the characters, revealing different aspects of their personalities and relationships. Noor's trademark humor is in full view and is nicely juxtaposed with his evocative descriptions of place. I want to go to Artemis' domain immediately to relax in a hammock and read the next book! If you enjoy adventure, snark, and some characters who will make you laugh and care for them then this is a book you will enjoy!

Difficult to rate

This book was really difficult for me to rate on a scale of stars. On the one hand, I really like this author and there was nothing actually *wrong* with this book. On the other? Man I just really don’t like Mason. I don’t even have a better reason than “he irritates me”. Things did perk up a bit when an old friend shows up mid way through!

Definitely don’t listen to me whine about it, if you’ve liked his other books you’ll probably love this. I am just an outlier. I will definitely be continuing on with the series though!

MASON the NEPHILIM OPENS NEW WORLD'S AND QUIRKS

Continuing to practice his writing magic, Noor LEADS into another magic wonderland. Mason Albrecht is another original young hero worth cheering for. False Gods leads us they twists and turns that may remind you of Jason's first flying episode from book one. Uncle Sterling is a wonderful surprise. Another "sterling" trek with the incredible Nazri Noor.

Mason and Florian are as entertaining as ever. The goal for this one twisted and turned as soon as Loki got involved, and the special little box creature was a great surprise. Lots of humor, and a guest appearance from Sterling, from the Darkling Mage series, upped the fun even more. I'm loving this universe. Fantastic Urban Fantasy!

Still mixed feeling

I will read more books but the childish behavior mixed with wisdom. The author is trying to be funny during the childish parts but most of the time it doesn't work. Still a good story though.

DNF

I'm just not enjoying the humor in this series like I did in Dustin's series. Mason is only 18 so he comes across as unbearably young for me and the demons, angels, and gods in this one feel almost silly.
