Sigyn of Asgard: Volume One: The Vultures will Know and Other Tales

Rate this book
Not satisfied with the austere life offered by her barbaric homeland, Sigyn wanders southward to tread the dust of such exotic lands as Greece, Egypt, Persia, and still more wondrous locales, all the while contending with warriors, wizards, and the grim forces of the outer gulfs. Set in the myth-shrouded era of the Bronze Age Collapse. The Sigyn tales hearken back to the glory days of weird pulp fantasy.

Very fun book for me. Sigyn is a young female warrior of the Aesir. 3 excellent sword and sorcery stories. Follow her path of mayhem. Good stuff.

This was an unexpected delight. It's actually the first time Amazon has recommended something to me that I was interested in reading. The best part, book one was free, and book two is on Kindle Unlimited. I was all in.

1. I Would Be Avenged

Our introduction to Sigyn. While searching for bones she discovers a lich bent on being avenged.

2. Under the Sign of Jullah-Julka

Captured and enslaved. Marooned on an unknown island. Trickery and horrors. Bride of a God.

3. The Vultures Will Know

Finding life as a mercenary not to her liking, Sigyn decides to walk away from the aftermath of a battle, casting off her armor and insignia. Taking up with a prostitute on the road they encounter a burial mound and a strange old man. All the while Sigyn steps are dogged by a creature more dead than alive.

Three short tales. Each better than the last. My favorite was Under the Sign of the Jullah-Julka; it checked off all the right boxes. I moved directly onto book two.

Sigyn, an Aesir at times mistaken for an Amazon, is little more than a child, yearning to adventure the world before she settles into the family role. Seeing much pain among a cruel world, kings and whores alike hold no different standard for her. Tough and a survivor, she still weeps for the pain of the innocent, and she's no modern harbinger of anti-men mentalities, relatable in her engagement of a wild world. I look forward to Volume Two: The Howler in the Waste and Other Tales. She reminds me also of Seanai of Ibak, from In the Cove of the Apostates, by Crawford.

Bought the paperback - very slim volume, reminds me of the chapbooks of old. Very retro and home office publishing style - which is perfect for S&S fans who eschew industry glam. I mean, there's no title page, no ToC, no front matter, no back matter, just bam, 3 adventures. You gotta love minimalism. (grin)

Here are the stories:

1) "I Would Be Avenged" - This opening short story sets what I think is the theme of the collection: 'Vengeance will destroy you.' It involves a long-dead warrior still chattering on about being wronged, along with Sigyn's sly reaction to her absurd discovery.

This quick tale introduces Crawford's protagonist, Sigyn, a larger than normal young woman of the Aesir (northern barbarians descended from the gods) as an independent thinker and warrior. Who, nevertheless, feels an obligation to marry her childhood friend, Radulf come springtime...

2) ...Except Sigyn chooses to experience the world a little bit before settling down and ends up "Under the Sign of Jullah-Julku." Isn't that the coolest name for a beast-god? And could come straight out of the Hyborian Age This story, a novelet, is the most Conan-esque, in fact. Great jungle setting, lots of exploring and discovery - and conflict...sword and sorcery style!

3) The last tale is "The Vultures Will Know" and wraps up this collection in a tragically triumphant (or triumphantly tragic) manner. Maybe my favorite of the three because of the great characterization of each of the players in the story, but all were enjoyable reads.

Looking for well written, entertaining and exciting pulp solidly planted in the world of S&S? Then you can't go wrong with this short project. Now, off to read Volume 2.

I had no expectation when I started this book, other than wanting some nicely written Sword and Sorcery stuff, and truth be told I was pleasantly surprised! And for such a small price, it was well worth it!

Around 70 pages, this little volume collects 3 short stories full of S&S goodness, each I found slightly better than the previous, though all of them where an equal joy to read. Avenging undeads, shipwrecking, weird magic, gory fights, horrible creatures and an eldritch deity... All I wanted was there.

I'm also really digging Sigyn as a character so far, so any more tales revolving around her adventures will definitely be on my radar from now on.

I already ordered Volume Two and looking forward reading it!

This draws not-so-subtly on the work of Robert E. Howard, portraying the ancient Picts, Vanir and Aesir straight out of the Hyborean Age, just transported to 2000 BC. Sigyn, our heroine is a fun character and in the third tale starts to develop her own voice.

As historical fantasy, there are many details wrong, especially with Greek arms & armour. As a collection, having two of three tales deal with revenants feels repetitive. Nevertheless, the stories and the heroine have their charmm and I'm willing to see how her adventures develop further.
