As if everyday life in London’s slums wasn’t hard enough for Jane Roberts and her three children, the day that ne’er-do-well husband Bert walks out on his family as rent day draws near is a particularly dark time. In the wake of his desertion, the family pull together to find their way forward, and Jane takes the steps she needs to get a divorce and free them all from Bert in the future.

With help from a neighbour who is not all she seems, a lucky break and fresh opportunities, the road ahead starts to look more promising. But will Bert wreck the new start the Roberts family have their sights set on?

I found it dull & repetitive. If the repeated paragraphs were cut out it would have read as a short story. The story was very flat and didn’t have much substance. All children were all unrealistically sickly sweet, and had the same ‘voice’. It read like the one person talking to themselves.

The main character is a martyr and never steps wrong.

The romance doesn’t begin until the last few chapters and is slapped together.

I do think this would appeal to some people but it’s not for me.

Jane Robert's abusive husband walks out on her leaving her with 3 children and no money in the slums of 1880 London. Digging in to make ends meet she and her children work to move forward in life and create futures they embrace. This one is a pretty simple story with a happy ending - no twists, no surprises.

If all the people in this world were equal to the ones in this story the world would be a better place.

Every story written by Beryl Matthews is well written it holds your interest from page one. All the stories are upbeat and leave the readers feeling good which is a change because most books now are full of misery.

i was sad to give this 3 ⭐️ because the story line was good … but it was very predictable and fast and too nice and perfect to be a poverty stricken life, a lot more could have been told … there was no real element of surprise… but i really enjoyed the idea of the story … maybe if the book had been longer and more detailed it would have a 5 ⭐️
i will look out see if she has anymore books 🙏🏽

Never thought of this story to really be fantastic to read.
I loved how one character changed their lives and you know what was the outcome.
This story was set in 1880. And I can imagine the scenes.

Looking forward to reading more books by this author.

This book was very simply written but it was great. It was not a literary masterpiece but nevertheless had a good story to tell and it was done well. A good easy read on holiday.
