This would have been a nice YA novel if it was only written from Lily's point of view. The author said that it is based on a friend and her daughter but the real Lily and her mother are completely different from the fictional characters. I'm glad to hear that because I felt so sad for Lily, a fatherless child who is neglected by her mother and her relatives. She only has one person looking out for her, a gay friend of her mother. Her mother said she loves Lily, but she doesn't know how to show it. I know I'm suppose to sympathize with her, but I can't do that because she keeps hurting Lily over and over again. She talks about why she can't live with her daughter, but she gives zero emotional support.
