Great Sexual Scandals: 4,000 years of debauchery

Rate this book
John Profumo, Bill Clinton, Jeremy Thorpe... All will be remembered more for their sexual exploits than their political achievements. In time, Monica Lewinsky and Christine Kieler will be remembered for little else. Such is the power of sex and the even greater impact of the sexual scandal. Yet today s tabloid news is nothing new. From King Minos of Crete s grotesquely erotic scandal to Byron s incestuous affair with his sister, Fatty Arbuckle s infamous three-day orgy, to even more imaginative sexploits, Susan Crosland entertainingly reveals all in this compelling book that combines meticulous research with the all-seeing eyes and skills of a leading novelist. About the Author Susan Crosland first became known for her penetrating profiles of the rich and powerful in the Sunday Express and The Sunday Times. She is author of the celebrated biography, Tony Crosland, and has written four Ruling Passions, Dangerous Games, The Magnates and The Prime Minister s Wife.

Susan Crosland was an exceptional journalist and as wife to Tony Crosland ,Foreign Secretary in the UK , she knew most of the political figures of her day.Her biography of her husband Tony, who died too early is very moving. But her brief romp through various sexual scandals in history is slapdash and her choices peculiar such as King Arthur who is more myth than a historical figure. Some of the UK accounts of people she knew or interviewed like Lord Boothby or Jeremy Thorpe hold your interest but for the most part her accounts are drawn from secondary sources with no discernible theme.
