Bubble tea, or boba—the addictive drink that originated in Taiwan in the 1980s—has taken the world by storm with shops popping up on every corner and lines out all their doors. In Boba Bar, the founders of the first self-serve boba bar, MILK + T, show you how to make this addictive drink in your own home, from making the tapioca pearls (the bubbles) and brewing the teas to creating simple syrups and all the delicious toppings.
Learn how to make: Tapioca pearls and how to get them to the perfect consistency Milky teas (classic milk tea, green milk tea, Thai tea, strawberry coconut milk, salted caramel milk tea) Fruity teas (pineapple + strawberry green tea, cucumber + watermelon black tea, watermelon + strawberry black tea, honey green tea) Simple syrups (brown sugar syrup, strawberry syrup, honey syrup) Toppings (fruit jellies, adzuki beans, taro, and sweet potato balls) With 60 innovative, step-by-step recipes and mouthwatering photos, along with the Milk + T story—from food truck to three successful stores in Los Angeles, Portland, and Las Vegas—and a dash of girl power from the authors Stacey Kwong and Beyah del Mundo, Bubble Tea Party! is the ultimate boba celebration!
Stacey Kwong was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, to immigrant Chinese parents. From reselling phones in high school, to starting a failed clothing line in college, it was as if she was wired to start her own business. But, she struggled to find her passion. She and her business partner found success through boba, with MILK+T, a Los Angeles-based food-truck concept, featuring the first self-serve boba bar on wheels. With tens of thousands of delicious, high-quality drinks sold, MILK+T proudly grew to three owned-and-operated stores in Los Angeles, California, Portland, Oregon, and Las Vegas, Nevada.
I adore tea, so when I read BOBA’s 50 delicious recipes and swooned over the gorgeous color photos, I knew I’d found nirvana. You’ll rely on natural ingredients to make these “bubble” teas that originated in Taiwan, including milk, fruit, or specialty teas along with sinful Sip 'N' Dips crafted with ice cream. My faves are the Watermelon + Strawberry Black Tea and the Black Tea topped with vanilla ice cream. Yum!!

Thanks to the authors, Quarto Publishing Group-Rock Point, and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are mine.
When I got this book I wanted to know what bubble tea was. The book looked from the outside great, but I found it a little white and boring on the inside. Recipes were great and simple to understand.
this is the cutest book!! I have seen these two ladies on Youtube and can attest to how great they are. Anyone who sees the Boba drinks or drinks them all of the time can read this and find out so much about it. There are recipes throughout, while also showing you how to make everything that comes in a drink.
What a super fun cook / DIY book. Stacey Kwong is hilarious, who knew ice was so technical ! The personal stories were so engaging that I found myself wizzing through this ‘cook book’ ! My only regret is that I didn’t accompany this book with a large icy glass of MILK-T with those chewy & delicious pearls! 🧋 for the win!!
a strangely long yet simple drink manual with too much padding and not enough content.
when i saw a boba cookbook pop up on netgalley, i thought it was serendipity; i had just attempted and spectacularly failed at making boba tea at home and had been looking for better instructions. "boba" seemed like my ticket to delighting in delicious drinks at home. unfortunately, i found the book light on instruction and repetitive in execution.
on the bright side, "boba" finally taught me the difference between different kinds of boba and what makes the milk tea i find at east asian grocery stores so delicious. on the down side, i found the instructions in "boba" to be too similar within categories and also too specific equipment-wise (who has a juicer just lying around???). every syrup recipe was exactly the same save for the fruit name... so was every jam recipe... so was every drink recipe... i would have much preferred a cookbook organized by "formulas," e.g. "here's how to make a fruit syrup and here are some fruits that generally work well in syrups, but experiment with new flavors!" i made two syrups, one jam, and one milk tea and unfortunately found the flavors quite lackluster; they all tasted overbearingly of sugar and i didn't even use as much sugar as the recipes called for!
overall, i do not think i would revisit "boba"'s recipes and would rather continue my experiments on my own.
thank you to netgalley and quarto publishing group – rock point for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and Rock Point for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Boba is written by the duo behind MILK+T, the first self-serve boba bar. In addition to the founders sharing their entrepreneurship story, this story shows you how bubble tea is made with several recipes. From making your own tapioca pearls to syrups to brewing the tea, Boba includes everything that you need to get started with making your own bubble tea.
So reviewing recipe books is something that I don’t usually do (and in fact, I never have before). But when I came across Boba, I knew this was a book I wanted to read and try the recipes for. I’ve been drinking bubble tea since high school, and have always wondered how the tea (and especially the pearls) were made. Boba does just that, intertwined with stories about MILK+TEA and the founders, and how they found their business together.
After reading this book, I gathered some ingredients for supplies. The writers mentioned the difference in quality in ‘5-minute-boba’ brands and making the pearls from tapioca flour yourself. I wanted to try this for myself, and it’s true – there’s definitely a difference.
There’s definitely a few time-sensitive elements to making bubble tea, but this is something I think I’ll get the hang of in the future. I’m looking forward to drinking more of it now that I know how it’s made! While I do wish there were some instructional images rather than just the final product, I found the instructions pretty easy to follow.
In addition to more traditional recipes, Boba provides interesting twists to the classic recipe, many of which come from MILK+TEA. Inside this book are several recipes for different fruit syrups and recipes to use them in. There’s also a whole section on different toppings. Finally, there’s a section on some of the special recipes used at MILK+TEA, many of which using ingredients like ice cream.
Overall, Boba was an informative recipe book! I learned exactly what I needed to about making boba in my home, as well as how to create more advanced recipes. If you enjoy bubble tea as well and want to learn how it’s made or try your hand at making some yourself, this book will do just that.
Boba is a tutorial guide to the trendy and popular drink with included recipes by Stacey Kwong & Beyah del Mundo. Due out 27th Oct 2020 from Quarto on their Rock Point imprint, it's 144 pages and will be available in hardcover format.
This book is a wonderful resource, especially for fans of bubble tea who find it difficult to source their daily drinks or are thinking about the cost over the long run. Plus it's so much fun to DIY!
It has a nice, easy to follow layout. The introductory chapter and how-to tutorial (~30% of the content) cover the basic hows and whys of the tools, ingredients, and toppings. The following chapters cover the standards: fruit teas, milk teas, and specialty drinks.
Each of the recipes includes an introductory description, ingredients listed in a bullet point sidebar (US measurements with metric/SI units in parentheses *yay*!), step by step instructions, as well a footers with tips and alternatives. One of the high points of the book for me are the photographs. They're high quality and clear - and serving suggestions are appealing and appropriate. Really beautiful drinks.
The recipe ingredients themselves are (mostly) easily sourced and will be available at well stocked grocery stores. There are a very few ingredients which might be a little more difficult to source, but definitely nothing that is 'way out there'.
All in all, -very- well written, beautifully presented drinks, made from (mostly) tasty ingredients which are easily sourced.
Five stars, we'll be revisiting this recipe book often. I have to say that I also really loved the grit and determination and open honesty of the authors about their journeys and their "artistic vision". Well done and impressive!
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
My daughter introduced me to Boba a few months ago, so when this book appear I just had to take a peak inside to see what other versions we could now make. It's certainly a curious drink, having balls of tapioca in your tea! We are lucky enough to have an excellent Chinese supermarket in our little town so we can stock up whenever we fancy some more.
The book starts with an introduction along with the two authors back history, covers the basics, such as equipment and how to brew black and green tea leaves to perfection and provides some topping recipes (strangely these toppings go into the glass first then the tea is poured on top). Then it provides 28 recipes divided into Fruit Teas, Milk Teas and finally Speciality Drinks.
The book provides the perfect way to cook Boba balls and provides a recipe on how to make your own too. The fruit teas have jam in them, so rather than using stuff from a supermarket, the authors provide a number of recipes to make your own plus more recipes for making your own syrups.
The recipes are in both imperial and metric measurements. The recipes are quite simple to follow, and seem to follow the same ingredients apart from the fruit. I found a couple of bits a little confusing as when making jam it says use equal parts of cane sugar, and then further on in the syrups it says use equal parts of cane sugar, however it's 1.5 times.
Now this is a Boba drinks book, and whilst it provides recipes on how to make the Boba itself, none of the main Tea or speciality drinks have a step so you can put them in! Yes the main Boba recipe says add them to any drink but I'd want to know when to add them? It is before the topping, after, before the tea goes in? If this was included in each recipe then it would make for more than just a smoothie book with tea, it would be a smoothie book with Boba, which is what I was looking for.
I received this book from Netgalley in return for a honest review.
Boba, also known as bubble tea, is originated in Taiwan and has taken the world by storm with a variety combination of teas and different kinds of flavourful syrup. Of course, these drinks won't be the same without the tapioca balls and in this book, the two authors give readers more than a glimpse what lies behind the secrets of making boba tea.
Tea brewing itself is an art; so to learn how to make boba tea, it is important to know the various kinds of tea leaves (i.e. green tea, black tea, Oolong) and the right temperature to brew them (the longer you brew, the more bitter taste it is). I'm a big tea drinker myself and my favourites are green tea and Oolong so it is no surprise that my boba tea choices are: honey green tea, Golden Oolong tea and Oolong milk tea. Of course, I do try out the others at times for fun or depending on moods but those will always remain as my go-to drinks.
Back to the topic, this book also covers the essential equipment needed of making boba teas as well as how to make various flavoured syrups, sweeteners, toppings and not to mention homemade tapioca balls, etc. If you're a lover of fruit teas, this book has some recipes too, such as strawberry, mango, watermelon, kiwi, pineapple, pomelo, and cucumber teas).
In a nutshell, this book is a must-have for boba tea lovers and with their easy-to-follow recipes, you can create your own drinks anytime and however you like. I need to get a copy of this since my ARC didn't show the photos (probably due to my e-reader app) but most of all, I want it so I can refer to it anytime.
I am obsessed with all things tea, and that certainly includes the bubble tea variety. I was so excited when I seen this book was available to request on Netgalley, as I've always wanted to learn a little more about the delicious drink that I know and love!!
This book holds the story of two business partners and how they came to be in the boba business. It was really interesting and inspiring to hear about how they've built their business, but also a little about their failures and how hard that can actually be. Their recipes sound AMAZING, and if I was in LA I'd be on the way to their store right now.
I'm not sure how adept I would be at making the boba themselves. But it was still wonderful to learn more about them. I think it'll definitely be something fun to try one day. In the meantime, I can't wait to try a few of the milk tea recipes, as that's the best part of a bubble tea.
I can't fault this one, it was exactly what I wanted. It wasn't too heavy on the details for a beginner like myself, and everything sounds delicious and I want one of everything and I want it right now!
Big thanks to the publisher for my advanced e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
Good book with interesting drink recipes but 1 minor flaw
Stacey Kwong and Beyah del Mundo have a sincere energy that is infectious. They clearly love boba tea and want to share that love with the reader. I definitely plan to try some of the recipes, including the homemade boba and the milk pudding, as well as using basil seeds and chia seeds more often. The recipes cover the entire menu from traditional milk teas to fruit infusions and slushes, to non-tea specialty drinks. It’s great if you are familiar already with making tea concentrates. And it is fantastic if you aren’t looking to limit sugar.
But…it doesn’t address how tea is done differently for milk teas. If you don’t have a strong enough tea as a base, all you will taste is milk and sweetener. And the book doesn’t address alternative milks like oat, soy, and almond.
All in all, however Boba: Classic, Fun Refreshing - Bubble Teas to Make at Home is a great book with beautiful photos and recipes that will inspire milk tea lovers.
I'm literally obsessed with bubble tea. This book is an absolute GOLD MINE of detailed recipes paired with mouth-watering photographs and a personal history of one Asian American boba store.
I love buying bubble tea outside, but getting it frequently can get so expensive. Not only does this book contain recipes for all of my favorite drinks and more, but they come from an established Asian American bubble tea shop run by two sympathetic young women. Getting my hands on this book seriously feels like your favorite restaurant just gave you all their secret recipes for that favorite dish. I mean, it's unbelievable.
I can't wait to try literally every drink in this prefect little book.
*Thank you to the Publisher for a free advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Boba by Stacey Kwong and Beyah del Mundo was a very interesting book. I have wanted to try Boba for a long time, but I still have yet to try any. I love that I can make it at home and this book covers everything you need to know as a beginner.
I am so glad that both these ladies wrote this book for those completely new to Boba and those that are Boba connoisseurs. As someone who is completely new, the idea of making my own Boba at home seems much less intimidating. I am glad they went over the grading systems, how to handle the tapioca balls, etc. Very helpful.
This book was so good. I cannot wait to try Boba soon, whether it is from a recipe from this book or at a shop on future travels.
I received an eARC from Quarto Publishing and Rock Point through NetGalley. All opinions are 100% my own.
Who would thought that making boba is not easy? When requested this book, I think I will found myself with a book contains many varieties of boba drinks. But NOPE. I am totally wrong. Here are the reasons.
As an Asian, boba is a part of my life, though I'm so picky with my bubble teas. Bubble tea was not my favorite drink, because all these times I underestimate it. Some mediocre Boba vendors make it easy to create one, and not always good. After this book, I think I'm more convinced to find the right boba place.
First, boba is about that black tapioca balls. Maybe some bought it ready made, makes the flavor or consistency so gooey or hard. Here they explained how to make one, in detail. Secondly, the syrup is not always good. Here they give recipes to make basic syrup as well as some other sweeteners that amazed me. And they also include the science of ice. Amazed me!
"Boba" is more than just your average book about boba/bubble tea. "Boba" introduces you to the authors through personal stories featuring fun real-life, fall-flat on your face, comical snippets of their lives. If you have ever wondered how great chefs or entrepreneurs get to where they are and what kind of obstacles we there on the way, Stacy and Beyah show you in technicolor (all the while introducing you to the art and delicious-ness that is boba). I am so happy this book came out because I can now get my boba - fix when I have left "civilization". The reader is given recipes along with the tools to recreate boba from home (and spoiler, you don't just have to use tapioca balls - the authors teach you how to make other toppings from home too).
I received this item through the Amazon Vine program in exchange for an honest review.
This is a fun book!
It has recipes on how to make boba at home as well as how to make various bubble teas. The book also dives into the story of MILK+T and the creators. They share stories about making recipes and their experiences selling boba along with the recipes.
The book includes a recipe for how to make boba pearls at home and some delicious looking recipes! The recipes are more time intensive than I expected and some require quite a bit of work. There's beautiful pictures of each drink with each recipe which is helpful! The dessert recipes included are kind of intense looking but seem worth it.
A lovely little cookbook for the Boba set. Stacey Kwong & Beyah del Mundo lay out the basics of creating many different Bubble Teas, from the fruity to the milky to the teal-less (and caffeine-free) delights for the younger set. Along the way, they tell the story of creating and building their Boba shops, from their first meeting to the three spots they run today. It was really interesting to learn that those popular 5- minute tapioca pearls aren't up to professional standards and why. And who would ever have thought about making their own boba from scratch? (You don't have to, but it would be fun to do it at least once!) A really fun book if you're a boba lover!
A fun look into the world of making your own bubble tea!
This book is full of stories of how MILK+T came to be, as well as recipes for making all the components of traditional, and not so traditional, bubble teas. The recipes are short and easy to follow and are realistic about what you can find in a regular grocery store or an asian market in the US.
I think I most enjoyed exploring some of their more unusual recipes and see where creativity can take bubble tea.
Thank you to NetGalley and Rock Point for providing an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I’ve been a fan of Boba for years after trying it in Taiwan for the first time. It’s even made its way into the US and isn’t has hard to find as it once was. Though it is still fairly new to Oklahoma and I had to learn to make my own to get my fix before several local places opened to cater to the masses.
This book has helped me to up my game and give me ideas to branch out with some additional ingredients and flavors. If you love Boba, you’re going to LOVE this book! Indulge in one of my favorite afternoon pick me ups and expand your Boba palate.
Easily one of the loveliest cookbooks I’ve had the pleasure of reading! It isn’t very often that you find a book solely on beverages that is so imaginative and artfully put together.
The gorgeous photography in this book makes each recipe look tantalizingly good. I really enjoyed the mix of beginner boba tea recipes, the creative and diverse suggestions for add-ins, and the commentary on each recipe!
If you’re a boba lover, this gorgeous book would make a lovely addition to your kitchen and could be a conversation / decor piece as well!
I was interested in learning about making Boba tea and in the process of that I got to learn more about Stacey and Beyah and their business Milk+T. It was fun to read these step by step recipes while running into fun facts and hijinks of what starting their business was like.
This book made me want to go out and get the ingredients to try but it also made me follow them on social media and wish to visit their shop. I highly recommend it.
If you love boba, you need this book. If you haven't found boba yet, you need this book. I made the Best Friend(Green Milk tea) and the Piglet. Both were fantastic. I cannot wait to try the others. The photography is good. It is well written. The directions are easy to follow. I think this book is more about the tea combinations and ways to customize than Boba directly, which is actually nice because it's nice to have stepping stones to somethings many people didn't grow up with.
This book is perfect for fan of Boba. It goes through the history of Boba and how it came to be as well as having all the information and tools you need to make your own Boba to rival those from the best. The colour palette and pictures within this book are gorgeous and beautifully fit the vibe of the book.
What a wonderful book. I learned so much from about bubble tea. I am not sure I can make boba myself. I get too easily distracted to watch a pot carefully. I am very excited to try new and varied flavors of bubble tea now.
