Fantastic stories!

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. Some of the creepiest short horror stories I've ever read. I absolutely loved this collection and would definitely recommend it to all horror lovers.

Overall, I will give the book 5 stars. I love a book of short stories because if you don’t like one, there’s always another one right behind it. There were some excellent stories in here so I wanted to break them down individually. The forward by Denise Hargrove was amazing.

As with any anthology, some of these stories were better than others. A lot of these were submitted by new, aspiring authors, which I kept in mind. All around, a great effort by all.

Like with all anthologies, there's something for everyone here - lighter, harder, spookier, and gorier. Big book of horror smorgasbord!

There are some really good stories in this book. There are a few that weren't but have the potential to be. I equate those to be like two new lovers fumbling around in the dark. The potential is there and they will eventually find their way. RJ, Justin, Eleanor, and few others are seasoned writers and I really enjoyed their work. I will be looking forward to those that are new to see what they will become.

Better than expected.

There a few excellent stories, several decent stories and a handful of DNF. The consistency among the stories seemed to be grammatical errors and a lack of editing. I began marking these errors but gave up. The worst was the reference to Donna Reed but spelled Reid. A five second Google could have caught that. Might have been more enjoyable without those distractions.

Books of Horror Volume 1 edited by RJ Roles and Justin M Woodward. Forward by Denise Hargrove.

As always, RJ Roles knows a good story when he finds one. He and Justin M. Woodward has done a fabulous job in this first collection of the Books of Horror authors. Everyone will love something about this collection.

Death Served by Jae Mazer. If the horrors and evil of Hell could seek and serve revenge, then this is how it would happen. An amazing story with gruesome details. Jae has some other short stories in other CPP anthologies and I have enjoyed all of them.

One Too Many by R. E. Sargent. Ethan is on a trip for his bachelor’s party. He wakes up with an awful hangover and can’t remember how he got where he ends up. A good story that has a nice ending that I didn't see coming. I don’t think I have read anything by Sargent before. I hope to come across more of their stories, though.

Hollow Earth Assassins by Mike Duke. A group of people are exploring the core of Earth and uncover something they regret. I loved the imagination of this one. If this is Duke’s way of writing sci-fi horror, then count me in! I need to grab his Amalgam.

Die-T by Nicole Henning. Die-T is a new restaurant that promises healthy choices. A fantastic eco-horror story. I haven’t read many eco-horror stories, so this one was a nice, unique change.

The Final Statement of Tom Washington by Drew Nicks. Sergeant Tom Washington is replaying what happened to him and his unit in a jungle. Absolutely fantastic story. The writing style is definitely one I enjoy.

Letting Go by Jason Myers. Adam is so tired and just needs some time to lie down. A kind of a sad story but it was still enjoyable. I find that the stories I have read by Myers, he enjoys writing about human nature.

The Hills Are Alive by Paul Labaczewski. A man gives up everything to live off-grid. What an amazing story and a wicked plot twist! Absorbing story that kept me engaged the entire time.

Friends in Low Places by Sean McDonough. A young boy is taken, but he knows someone that’s very important in the scary business. A quick and enjoyable story. I have read some of McDonough's other stories, and he likes to add a little plot twist that you don’t necessarily see coming.

Love Blooms by Jesse Zabel. A man is lost and lonely after the death of his wife. He would do anything to see her again. I liked this story, it was eerie and satisfying. A little bit sad and poetic.

An Unforgettable Halloween by Fred Nocito. A story of some kids that are out having fun on Halloween night. A spooky, good story. Great to reread during the Halloween holiday.

Buck Fever by Ron Davis. A man is on a hunting trip and finds an evil secret that lives in the forest. A magical, messed up story. I really liked this one.

The Ice Cream Man by Alexander Westrich. An ice cream truck with its own personality. A great revenge type story. A quick and easy story. I like the little change in character for this story.

The Wishing Well by RJ Roles. A kid makes some wishes at the wishing well in hopes of them coming true. Excellent story. I will think of this one when I see wishing wells, now.

Painted Into A Corner by Staci Layne Wilson. A man is quite nauseated by paintings and tries to overcome them. A strange story. I would like to find some more Wilson stories to get a better idea of her style.

The Incredible Man by Matthew A. Clarke. Ivan is following in his grandfather’s shoes at becoming a fantastic magician. A lot of fun, I loved the words.

The Glutton by Andrew Kurtz. A psychology professor is asked to help the NYPD to solve a series of awful crimes. A little bit dry at times, but still enjoyable to read through..

Billy’s Room by Jeremiah Peplow. Billy’s mom has brought home a new friend to have a playdate. A good story, but it was predictable.

Smoking Kills by Catherine Kenwell. A new tenant is having trouble keeping a smoke smell out of her apartment. Very cool story and I loved the ending. I think I actually smelled the smoke when I read this.

Chains by Steve Stred. A group of friends are about to have a night of their lives, respectfully. A huge plot twist you absolutely can’t see coming. Holy smokes!

The Pumpkin Men by Ruthann Jagge. An amazing revenge story. Dree knows dark magic and uses it to solve some personal issues. Totally gripping and I loved it.

Lexi Robins by Mark Mackey. A bit of a sci-fi horror story. It was an okay story, didn’t pull me in much. I needed a little bit more oomph.

The Loving Shepherd by Leon Sluyter. This is like an ode or poem about a cult. Very entertaining. I liked that it was a poem.

Hunger by Lauren Mills. This was definitely a fever dream. About a man who is hungry looking for a meal. Totally immersive and fun.

The Zalgo Incident by Toneye Eyenot. A young man and his friends mess with a ouija board, and of course it doesn’t go as planned. It never really does. They never learn.

The Eternal Voyage by J. J. Hardic. A fantastic story of a politician getting what he deserves. It is a longer story compared to the others. I’m interested in Hardic’s other stories, too.

The Door by Naomi Downing. Something keeps making noises behind a door in a bedroom. Creepy as hell and awesome.

Come Play With Us by Scott Deegan. Three friends are stuck at an old toy store. Amazing story and unique, different from the other stories in this collection.

Unicorn by Natasha Sinclair. A mom finds out her daughter has a half sister. A psychological horror story. Well written and creepy.

Loreley by Eugene C. Mclean Jr. A spurned lover takes revenge on those unfaithful. Quick and great story.

Book Magic by Kevin J. Kennedy. A kid has a super power that is amazing and would be fun to have!! Kennedy always seems to write some excellent and fun stories.

For the Love of a Child by Eleanor Merry. A mom wakes up to darkness and her kids are missing. A phenomenal twist in this story. I loved this story.

Dead Shot by Chris Kosarich. A soldier is on an assignment when his past catches up to him. Fantastic story!

Problem Child by Joshua E. Borgmann. A young kid is in foster care and thinks highly of himself, as being better than the others. Amazing and super creepy.

Home is Where the Heart Is by Kristine Prais. A married couple move to a small town and are given a very warm welcome. Loved the supernatural in this one.The characters are relatable and the twist is freaking awesome.

Buried Secrets by Chris Bonner. About two lovers who struggle together. I thought this was a neat story. I enjoyed it.

Easy Money by J. Z. Foster. There are lots of ways to donate a part of yourself. These two college dudes just want to make some money by doing so. Funny and nasty, all at once.

I Didn’t Choose The Zombie Life by Lance Dale. The ghost of a zombie is ignored by itself. An okay story. I needed some more gore when it comes to zombies.

Worst Fear by Sea Caummisar. Tonsurephobia. Look it up!

Smile Like You Mean It by Justin M. Woodward. A photographer with some mommy issues. Damn, this is a good one!

Happy Birthday! Praise the Goat Man! by Brad Walker. A super fast paced occult story of a young girl. Very good story, creepy and spooky.

Rejected For Content by Charles Welch. A strange but awesome story. A writer is having a terrible day, he just wants to publish a story. Authors will get a kick out of this one.

Do These Pants Make My Ass Look Fat? by Steve Thompson. A wife is fed up with her husband and decides to change some things. I loved it, the wife is awesome!

Our House by John Cady. A haunted house type of story, but it isn’t quite what you would expect. Definitely a good story.

Fairest of Them All by Bryan Moyer. A gruesome story of being too old to be a model and at what lengths a woman would go to, to prove she still has what it takes. Boy, this woman likes getting her way!

Coven by P.J. Blakey-Novis. A young lady just wants to go on her very first date! Ha! Loved this one. Different from the rest of the collection.

Naughty Clause by Chris Miller.Santa seems to be taking care of all the naughty kids on the list on this Christmas Eve. Evil delights!

Trunk or Treat by Nicholas Gray. Three friends are out on Halloween night doing the trunk or treat event. Trunk or treat isn’t necessarily safer than house to house trick or treating, in this story.

Throw a Punch by Andrew Lennon. Joe is constantly being bullied and at some point, it has to stop. And he makes that happen and then some!

Junkie by Tara Losacano. Karly is a junkie in need of her next fix. Awesome story. I do like Losacano’s stories she publishes.

Now that Volume One is done, I am itching to get into Volume Two. I just know it’ll be a blast!!

Excellent Book!

This is the kind of short story collection that I love. Each story was just a few pages long, but each one was complete. I was sorry when the book ended!

*I'm not going to give you the 'what this book is about' blurb - you can read that elsewhere.

1. Prior to reading this book I didn't understand the draw of short stories or anthologies. After reading this - I 100% get it and I've dove head-first into novellas due to this book.
2. I belong to this group on Facebook and It. Is. Perfection. Seriously, if you love horror and you have Facebook, go join this group. There are amazing recommendations (your TBR will increase exponentially while your bank account rapidly decreases). So many of these authors are interactive in the group and they're wonderful people. (I'm looking at you, Ruthann Jagge) Many also have additional novellas or books; this is a great way to dip your toe into an author's work and see if you want to read more from them.
3. There are a few stories that I didn't like at all or found difficult to read - not due to the subject matter, just due to the writing itself. I will not call those out. If you want to know, I'll tell you in private because those are still stories that someone worked on, and I respect that and don't need to crap on them publicly...Lord knows I ain't writing!
4. My absolute favorite of the stories in this volume was 'The Pumpkin Men' by Ruthann Jagge. But there were so many good solid stories. A few others I absolutely loved are: 'Die-T' by Nicole Henning, 'The Hills Are Alive' by Paul Lubaczewski, 'An Unforgettable Halloween' by Fred Nocito, 'Come Play With Us' by Scott Deegan (This story in particular could 100% have been a full length novel, it is a plot that could go so many different directions and was SO GOOD), and 'For The Love of a Child' by Eleanor Merry.

3.5 stars for effort. I’m all for new horror writers and new anthologies. Unfortunately a lot of the stories here are pretty predictable and seem to be written by fans of horror not writers of horror. Given that I am not capable of writing a great story myself I’m looking forward to seeing some of these authors develop and hone their skills. In the meantime, here’s a list of the stories I really liked-

Friends in Low Places by Sean McDonough
The Incredible Ivan by Matthew A. Clarke
Smoking Kills by Catherine Kenwell
The Pumpkin Men by Ruthann Jagge
Come Play With Us by Scott Deegan
Happy Birthday! Praise the Goat Man! by Brad Walker
Naughty Claus by Chris Miller

There are some amazing stories here from very new authors that make this book worth every penny (I'm not telling, read the book). Beyond those, as with most anthologies, about half of the stories are decent and worth the time to read, with a couple that i just couldn't finish. Great first book from a group I've been a happy member of for over two years!

This anthology is very uneven.
It contains a wide variety of stories, from very modern to charmingly archaic. A lot of them center around your usual menagerie of horror: zombies, witches, psychos, lots of bullies (too many, for my taste), a few separate stories about going to hell. There's some gore, some classic scares, some psychological horror. A lot of it is unoriginal, but a few stories stood out.
The quality also varies: some stories were clearly amateurish, others were good enough to qualify for traditional publishing. But all stories were very short, which I think was a major constraint. A few times I encounter what I thought was a great idea, that ultimately ended to quickly, before having a chance to leave an impact.
A few stories stood out to me:
Death Served by Jae Mazer – interesting premise, I wished it was longer
Hollow Earth Assasins by Mike Duke – very old school, in a charming way. Not original at all and the monster seemed a bit cheesy, but I liked it.
Die-T by Nicole Henning – very modern, for a change, but nice. I just wish we could have horror with female protragonist that doesn’t sooner or later touch upon reproduction.
Billy's Room by Jeremiah Peplow – this story was really unsetting, despite being short. Loved it.
Smoking Kills by Catherine Kenwell – a ghost story that worked very well despite being short.
Chains by Steve Stred – not scary, but wicked. I think shock is easier to achieve in such a short form than actual terror.
Hunger by Lauren Mills – strange, but unsetting. Headhopping was an issue, but I think the story could be developed into something great.
The Zalgo Incident by Toneye Eyenot – heartbreaking and stomach-churning.
Come Play With Us by Scott Deegan – reminded me of a game The Toy Shop. Nice.
Book Magic by Kevin J. Kennedy – creepy shortie, one of the few original ones.
For The Love Of A Child by Eleanor Merry – a story with a twist.
Home Is Where The Heart Is by Kristine Prais – a couple moves into small town, but when you think you know where this is going, think again.
Easy Money by J.Z. Foster – obligatory lovecraftian reference (just kidding, I liked it).
Buried Secrets by Chris Bonner – very good writing, I wish it was longer
Fairest Of Them All by Bryan Moyer – deliciously wicked

Not worth your time

This book took me so, so long to get through. I started reading it back in July of 2021. It's now Nov of 2022. I could only handle three or four stories before I would have to put the anthology down out of second hand embarrassment. The characters are one dimensional and the scares are cheap and not actually scary. So often they rely on a left field "twist" that reads like an ad-lib and makes no sense with the rest of the story.

Out of all the stories in this anthology, there were maybe a half dozen with interesting ideas. Unfortunately the execution left a lot to be desired.

I would not recommend this to anyone, except as a learning experience of what not to do when writing your own horror stories.

Really, really bad. The writing is juvenile and amateurish, on the level of comic books. Seems to be written for a Young Adult audience, although some stories are sexually graphic. There are so many books of horror that are also well-written pieces of literature, that this has no reason to exist. I suspect all of the five-star reviews are by the authors themselves. Avoid this like the plague.

Lots and lots of stories

This collection contains 49 short stories. My favorites include Die-t, Billy’s Room, Fairest of Them All, and Throw a Punch. I won’t give away the plots of any of the stories as your favorites may differ from mine. Surely, among these 49 stories, you will find some to your liking.

Considering that all of those stories were written by amateur authors, their quality is surprisingly good. I am a bit lenient here in my judgement due to the authors not being professionals in the field, so I expected some stories to be a bit rushed or lack in atmosphere and suspense.

I judged the authors based on how I see their potential. For 90% of them, the potential is certainly there.

Pretty good anthology.

A fun read for horror fans. There are quite a few good stories here, but I also found there were a good number of not so good stories. Definitely, worth the price though. I will be picking up the 2nd anthology.

I'm a sucker for a great book of anthologies, and I'm very glad I've backed this facebook horror group of authors! Most of the stories kept me on edge, while others were a little too slasher for my taste, but so far Volume 1 has been a winner for me, and I look forward to jumping into Volume 2.

To much

To much blood and guts for me. I guess some authors went for shock value by using bloody scenes that I feel where unnecessary. However, other stories were good.

Good read

Many good stories. Nothing too hair raising, but some subject matter not suitable for young readers. Will read the next installment.
