Edmund DeCleryk Mysteries #2

Murder in the Cemetery: An Edmund DeCleryk Mystery

Rate this book
Residents of a charming, quaint, maritime village on Lake Ontario are shocked when they learn that another murder has occurred in their bucolic coastal town, this time in an historic cemetery where the casualties of the War of 1812 are buried. Yet again, the murder hits close to home - the victim is a childhood friend of Ed DeCleryk, the criminal consultant hired by police chief Carrie Ramos to investigate the crime.During the investigation Ed and his wife, Annie, who is the head of the local historical society, travel to London, England and during a visit to a museum there discover a collection of artifacts dating back to the early 1800s with one missing piece - a link to the reason for George's untimely death. This clean fiction novel contains no graphic violence, explicit intimate scenes, or cursing, but there are lots of exciting twists and turns, an historical subplot and a surprise ending. Helping Ed discover secrets that have risen from the grave and the reason for his friend's murder doesn't deter Annie from cooking for friends and family, and the book offers gourmet recipes she prepares for them.

This was such a great cozy mystery! When the body of George Wright is discovered at a cemetery, it becomes clear that this is not going to be an easy case for criminal consultant Ed DeCleryk to solve. George was one of his childhood friends, and Ed is determined to get to the bottom of the who and the why of his murder, but it seems that every lead Ed gets turns out to be entirely plausible.

I had no idea who murdered George, so it was great to follow the clues along with Ed, to find the true culprit. Murder in the Cemetery was as well thought out murder mystery, and we are treated to some delicious recipies at the end of the book!

This was book two in the Edmund DeCleryk Mystery and it was easy to read this as a stand alone, I found the characters easy to love and the setting of Lighthouse Cove is just perfect for this mystery.

Murder in the Cemetery-AUDIO, is an Edmund DeCleryk Mystery, by Karen Shughart in which a retired Ed, is now a contractor for various law enforcement agencies and his Wife, Annie, is the director for the local historical society museum. They are happy in their life. They have a lovely hoe, Ed has a boat, and they travel at will. They have plenty of friends, both individually and as a couple. All is well in their world until Annie receives a call from a friend who has something to show her. Could she meet him? She calls the friend she had planned to walk with a lunch hour and communicated the change in destination. When they arrived at the historical but damaged cemetery they found him lying over a grave . . . dead. She thought it must be related to someone in the cemetery, but they'd all been there for centuries.

As this modern mystery is unfolding, a story from the War of 1812 is also unfolding. It is not the same story that they all knew. In fact, the museum had a member who was considered an expert, who had written about this very man. The pregnant police chief who had almost no staff hired Ed. He went from suspect to suspect, following all clues, until there were no clues left. The writer was attacked but survived. Then, a second murder, which was related tot he first only by method. It was a good mystery. I enjoyed it. The murderer was a surprise.

The reader was John DiLeonardo who was not a good fit for this book. At first, I thought I just needed to adjust but I never did. The worst he did was make the dialogue sound choppy and contrived. I think I would have enjoyed it better in the written form.

I was invited to listen to Murder in the Cemetery by the author. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #karenshughart #murderinthecemetery #johndileonardo

Following the first installment I was unclear on how I felt about the book. This one kinda clears things up for me. Although Shughart manages to craft a mystery that keeps you guessing while laying out little clues for you, my problem is all the unnecessary descriptions of parties, and everything that Annie fixes for dinner, and the description of furniture and just a lot of stuff that made this story move slowly for me. If you want to know what the book is about read the other reviews. Most of them seemed more impressed than I am. I wouldn't mind reading more stories about these characters, but they would need to have less unnecessary descriptions.

Murder in the Cemetery

I like the main characters with Ed, Annie, and Chief Ramos. I would have enjoyed this book more if it hadn't been drawn out for so long. I,also, rolled my several times at the long fetched theories presented. The number of chapters put me off. Every scene doesn't need to be a chapter. I'll finish the series since I purchased it, though.

When his friend George Wright is poisoned to death, Ed DeCleryk is glad to be invited to help investigate the murder. But the investigation turns out to be frustrating, with no resolution until the precise connection between the murder and events from the War of 1812 becomes apparent. In the meantime, Ed and his wife Annie enjoy lots of good food and wine with family and friends.

Murder in the Cemetery: An Edmund DeCleryk Mystery is full of historical reference and intrigue from the start. If you are a fan of cozy mysteries, you will love the world Karen has created with Lighthouse Cove. The second book follows Edmund DeCleryk and his lovely wife, Annie, as they navigate the latest murder in their idyllic small town. What I love most about this book is the historical references and the camaraderie of the Lighthouse Cove residences. The town feels warm and safe until a murder shatters the peacefulness, regardless I'd still love to live in Lighthouse Cove and take my chances.
Karen also adds bonus recipes at the end of the book. I look forward to making it!
