The good news is that Kes isn’t crazy. She’s descended from an ancient, powerful race…and her magic is finally waking up.

But as a half-blood, Kes is marked for death. Her pureblood relatives know she’s out there, and they'll stop at nothing to hunt her down.

Now she’s on the run with Sol—a half-blood who’s sarcastic, infuriating, and determined to save her life. But the magical world is changing, and pureblood hunters aren't the only danger out there.

„Half-Born“ is the first installment in “The Half-Blood Chronicles”, a brand-new YA fantasy series by Ivy Baum.

Kestrel (Kes to her friends) use to belong with the “in circle” at High School until…. she didn’t. It all began with her parents splitting up and her father disappearing without a trace. Now her life is a constantly fight to come to terms to her new status as “persona non grata” and the one to ridicule, even her boyfriend has moving on (without telling her), thus as the finally the whole mockery reach a new high at her former BBF party, Kestrel accept a ride home with the new designated bad boy at school… Sol Kyrion.

The ride turns out to be a real eye opener for Kes, as in realizing that the visions she is having since her parents split are not a sign of mental disorder, but more rather the consequence of her true nature. Kestrel is a half-born, whose abilities are just surfacing, which put her in the rather of both factions, the humans and the full-bloods, mortal enemies that will do anything to hunt her down.
Her only allies are Sol Kyrion and her family/friends, who all hide a secret of their own. Kes embarks in a road trip across the country, while trying to outrun her pursues and reach sanctuary in a new community of half-born.

The book is fast paced, well written with an interesting new premise in YA, some questions about the nature of the “full-bloods”, the “half-bloods” and their interaction with humans are answered on the way to sanctuary, some others surface and will be dealt with in the remaining books in the Trilogy (Noble Born and Source Born). A great YA fantasy new series.

First, if you get a chance go to ivy Baum’s website and sign up for her newsletter and you will receive both prequel books to the series not available anywhere else…and believe me you will want to read those two before this first one in this series~ It is two years after the story of Melanthe~ A new half-blood is about to inherit her powers. Her name is Kestrel and she is a Senior in high school, in two weeks her whole world turned upside down~ All her friends are now ignoring her, her father left, she had gotten a fever and sick enough to put in the hospital, her boyfriend dumps her out of nowhere, and the new guy will not leave her alone! He knows things about her he should not~ Sol and several others were there for her and replaced some missing people. Things have grown more complicated and dangerous…the Armistice has ended and it is a free-for all…Sol and Melanthe had been an item and she disappeared! Now, feelings were developing between him and Kes. We now journey into the worlds of Sanctuary, the Capitol, and Outlaw City. They will face the Council a new group causing terror and trying to involve humans…it is a mess…and even something bigger is coming! Kes ends up in another area that is unexplainable as is her power, a new entity appears, an old frenemy of Sol’s appears and the bad men just disappear…but for more answers we will have to wait for the next book and the new adventures Kes will undertake along with the others…I received this as an ARC and am leaving a voluntary review.

ONE REFRESHING ROLLERCOASTER!!!
Wickedly intense! Ivy delivers one unique approach for this impressive storyline and gripping plot, ratcheting up the thrill at a smooth flowing pace, thrusting this baby into a tizzy with a life altering, mind-blowing culmination. A raging tempest chocked-full of nailbiting events and inexplicable circumstances thrusting those swirling emotions into play front and center. Anarchy, escapades and havoc run amuck riding the rail, fusing this baby together piece by jagged piece seamlessly. Unveiling a foray of drama, secrets, intrigue, danger and mounting suspense, blasts this baby into the eye of the storm, breaking it down, throwing it into a tailspin with staggering results. Seizing the moment, witnessing the trials and tribulations, shocking twists and stunning turns, tempting our characters in ways they could have never anticipated. The characters are authentic, approachable and realistic with personalities and depth that blew this baby wide open and exposed in all it's glory. The scenes are so vividly detailed and descriptive that it gives the illusion you were right there in the middle of ground zero with them. Remarkable job Ivy, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

Didn’t not like sol or Junie at all what they did was wrong

Sol is a mean person who I want nothing to do with. Junie destroyer the heroines life and her friendships for nothing so that left a very bitter taste in my mouth.

At that point I’d didn’t like where the story was heading.

I did like the heroine, but she should’ve been more outraged at Junie or whatever her real name was for messing with her best friends Sydney’s mind.

Very entertaining

A teenage girl who learns she's not fully human, must lear to handle her magic. The world is changing for Kes and she isn't ready for it. This book was very interesting, it kept me wondering what was next. Great world building & characters. Still needs a bit of editing, but it's not too distracting.

Prejudice in another way. Everyone else is normal but Kes. Bullying and ostracizing at it's meanest. This is a fast paced and action packed read. Luckily there's a hero in the wings to help. You can always overcome when you have a friend-enemy by your side.
