4 Stars
I am 34 and currently undergoing a medical menopause for the 3rd time in my life. This is because I have severe endometriosis and beig medically induced into the menopause helps to stop endometriosis from growing and therefore should reduce inflammation and pain.
Because of this, I have naturally become very interested in the Menopause and so when I saw this book, I was excited to read it.
The M Word is written by a UK GP and is a very well written, informative and interesting book. I found it covered the whole topic of peri-menopause and menopause very well. The book is split into 3 parts. The first part is "All About the Menopause" and goes into the biology and the general information about what the menopause is.
Part 2 is "The Menopause and me". It talks about hot flushes, the pelvic floor, menstrual bleeding, sex, health conditions after the menopause and the menopause and work. I found this a very interesting section and learned a lot.
Part 3 is about HRT and other menopause treatments. It has a lot of very useful information about HRT including the pros and cons. It also looks into other useful (and not useful but highly promoted) alternatives to HRT.
I found this book very easy to read and it was interesting and held my attention.
The reason why I couldn't give it 5 stars is that I don't think there was enough information on ALL the side effects before and during the menopause, which I think would have been very useful to help women know they are not alone with these symptoms. The author tends to focus on the more common side effects but I wish more of the lesser were covered too.
I also would have liked names of drugs to be listed in brackets when talking about their group of drugs or using more common names etc.
Overall, a very well written book that I think will help everyone that will go through the menopause and family members that want to understand it as well. I definitely recommend this book!
Please note that I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.
