English review: I wasn’t expecting to say this, but I must admit I’m disappointed with this story arc. When I talk about "Vinland Saga" and say I’m disappointed, that doesn’t mean it was a bad story. The narrative remains engaging, the characters are complex, the battle scenes are epic, and the political intrigue is thrilling. However, I feel like the series reached its philosophical peak at the end of the previous arc with the debate between Thorfinn and Canute.
Additionally, there are increasingly more characters with a mindset that feels far too modern for the Middle Ages. This wouldn’t have been an issue if the series had started this way, but until now, the characters’ thoughts and mentalities matched the 11th century quite well in the earlier parts of the series.
This arc focuses on the power struggle within the Jomsvikings, with the warriors splitting into two factions: one supporting Floki’s grandson, Baldr, and the other supporting Thorfinn, regardless of his wishes. This leads Thorfinn to confront his past once again, learning, among other things, that Floki was the one who paid Askeladd to kill his father. I liked this moment, but it feels like the author rushes through it, and Thorfinn returns to his pacifist convictions far too easily. I would have preferred a much stronger internal conflict.
The story comes full circle in some ways, which I appreciated. Thorfinn meets Hild, a new character whose father he killed back when he was part of Askeladd’s band. For an entire volume, Thorfinn essentially takes on Askeladd’s role. Toward the end of the arc, Thorfinn even uses the lessons he learned from Askeladd to defeat Garm, a young warrior whose sole purpose in life is to fight increasingly powerful opponents.
Thorkell is one of the highlights of this arc, remaining just as amusing and intriguing as ever. His complete disinterest in politics and superhuman strength make him an unpredictable and uncontrollable character. Thorkell always does whatever he wants, regardless of Canute’s interests or those of the Jomsvikings he allies with.
The battle for Jomsborg, the Jomsvikings’ fortress, is epic, adrenaline-packed, and includes a deeply emotional chapter told from the perspective of a dying soldier on the battlefield. However, the resolution of the conflict felt a bit too convenient for my liking.
Thorfinn does grow in some respects, and faces a few shadows from his past. However, the issue with having the protagonist’s most significant and impactful revelation happen midway through the story is that nothing that follows can have the same emotional weight.

Adesso aspettiamo i prossimi volumi.
A questo, 5 stelle.

At first I was disappointed that this volume followed Sigurd. But his story had a really nice and satisfying ending for the moment.
I was somewhat surprised that they skipped the whole Constantinople arc but I see why they did it. But I would've loved to see that. I'm also disapponted that they fast forwarded the whole relationship between Thorfinn and Gudrid.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed this volume.

Volume 23 is like a gentle sunrise after the storm. There's something so deeply human and tender about the way the characters grow, especially Sigurd! You expect him to remain a comic relief or antagonist, but instead he surprises you by being genuinely kind. It’s rare to see a character arc like that. Quiet, grounded, and full of heart.

They also finally finished their first journey! Safely coming home and reuniting with everyone in Iceland. And finally, the wedding! Thorfinn and Gudrid deserve this softness after all the pain. Surrounded by warmth, found family, and dreams of peace, Vinland is slowly becoming more than just a distant land. It’s a hope shared by all these beautifully flawed, evolving people. I'm so happy!

An amazing way to end this arc! I loved every moment of it :) I hope the next arc is just as good. I'm a little nervous about reading it now!

That woman is a seabird. A tern. And a caged wild bird makes a poor sight indeed. The best thing to do is to let it fly.

This is slow because it’s the beginning of a new and -the- final arc, but it’s hilarious and the last two chapters are so wholesome I may be crying again..

What an adorable volume, mostly dedicated to Sigurd's character and his complicated relationship with his father. It's only a bonus to see Thorfinn even more grown up and with a new family.

This was a very lay-back volume, liked it a lot.

Kinda slow but not boring at all, very entertaining and funny as hell. Can't wait to see what's gonna happen next. Sadly, this is the last volume that came out so now i do how to wait, and probably a lot. SO SAD!!!!

I ended liking Sigurd a lot, he grew so much in the last volumes and i love how his friends treat him, he's the boss but they just treat him like he's one of them.

I guess now i'll have to watch the anime, so not everything is bad :D

At first I thought it would be a Vol. about Sigurd completely but the last two chapters melted my heart. We go in parts in its entirety it's a very well written Vol. and quite relaxed after the closing of the arc, Sigurd is a secondary character who also had his protagonist so his character had an evolution the whole analogy of the chains and the fact that he was able to free himself from them is a brilliant narrative that is very common within the story of Vinland, we can also see that the relationship between Thorfinn and Gudrid is deeper than we thought and they are becoming one of my favorite couples that I have found while reading manga.

Very excited for what's coming in the next arc.

Who would've thought that Sigurd and Halfdan's confrontation would make me all sobby? 😭

At this point, when even the most tyrannical character in the story is revealed to be motivated by a concern for the common good of his people, it seems to me that one of the main messages of the managa is that no human is inherently evil, they just resort to misguided means of achieving their goals.

The most naturally "evil" character out of all the antagonists so far seems to be Garm, but then it feels like it's hardly his fault – like he was just born sociopathic, or maybe autistic, and unfortunately it so happens that his "special interest" is combat.

Anyways, I just like stories with grey morality.

I'm very disappointed that the voyage to the east was off-screened. I do understand that it doesn't technically have anything much to do with the main story, the colonization of Vinland itself... but neither did the whole Baltic war, and we wasted so much time on that one! I'd rather have had it the other way around.

My dude Siggy is one of the best characters with a great development. I wish we could have seen more of Thorfinn and Gudrid's relationship tho, I feel like it was very fast-forward :(
Doesn't get 5 stars because I'm petty and wanted to see them kiss 😔
