Two nuclear warheads have been stolen, two guards have been murdered in cold blood, and the only witness has given chase. Unarmed and outnumbered, Lance Corporal Cassandra Sing must use all her Marine training to keep her wits about her as she attempts to thwart a group of men who have no problems doing whatever it takes to get what they want…
I write in the nuclear-based thriller genre because I have nearly fifty years of work experience in various nuclear related technologies. My first assignment, at nineteen, for the U.S. Army, was as a nuclear weapons electronics technician. In 2012, I retired as a senior member of the science and engineering staff at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Washington State. While I do infuse my nuclear resume into my stories, I also base my stories on real events and real people. I based The Defect on the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island NPS in Pennsylvania, and on an attack at the Watts Bar NPS by a lone gunman. The female lead in Not On MY Watch, Lance Corporal Casandra Sing, USMC, is based on my oldest granddaughter, who is an active duty aviation fire fighter in the United States Marine Corps and on my experience as an Army nuclear weapons tech stationed at Ft. Sill, OK. My wife Patty and I have been married for forty-three year’s. It looks as though the perfect union might last. My favorite hobbies are my my three great-grandsons, my three grand-daughters, reading and writing.
First, I would like to thank The author Jeff Bailey for sending me the Pfd version of his novel NOT ON MY WATCH. In amazing military thriller we meet the main character Cassandra Sign who is a marine training to fire as a firefighter, but witnessed a event of two stolen warhead nukes. I really enjoyed the female lead. This was a awesome military thriller. If Your looking for a book military I suggest Not on my watch
NOT ON MY WATCH by Jeff Bailey is the first book that I have read by this author. It is a military thriller that takes place in Oklahoma. Lance Corporal Cassandra Sing witnesses an event at the base’s north gate. With no way to communicate with others, she has to use her Marine training to attempt to prevent further damage.
Cassie was a compelling character and definitely someone that you could root for. The book started out with an intense situation and that suspense did not let up during most of the book. The reader gets some of Cassie’s backstory through a few flashbacks in time. Her goals were clear and her motivations seemed believable and well-drawn. There were no secondary characters with significant depth, but there was enough information on the antagonists to keep me engaged. The plot twists seemed believable and the stakes were high enough to make this a fast-paced page turner for me.
Overall, this was a dramatic, intense and absorbing novel that seemed feasible and all too real. If you enjoy military thrillers, then this may be the next book for you.
Thanks to the author for a complimentary copy of this novel and the opportunity to read and provide an honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way.
This military suspense novel had me white knuckling my Kindle. The main character is a young female Marine. Nice to see a military woman depicted using her brains. She’s also tough and fearless, but not heartless. As a reader, I was rooting for her all the way. The story is good enough to overlook a few editing issues. A very entertaining read.
Jeff bailey is a master storyteller and well worth a read. I loved the fact that he had a female protagonist. She's tough, sassy, and inventive. The story hooks you from page 1 and leaves you on the edge of your seat until the end.
This book is an amazing military read, I only started it a few days ago but just couldn't put it down. Jeff Bailey's expertise and experience shines through! Wonderful to see a female marine lead in the name of Cassie. For anyone looking for a "military" book with a powerful cast and lead, enthralling and gripping to the end, then I can highly recommend Not On My Watch. A big Thank you to Jeff Bailey for providing such a detailed and insightful read. Looking forward to reading some more titles by Jeff Bailey. Bailey's Not On My Watch offers a peek behind the scenes at the U.S. military. Bailey raises the stakes with a terrifyingly realistic plot, placing Cassie Sing, a soon-to-be full-fledged Marine into the protagonist's role. She must thwart the nefarious attempts of bad guys seeking to get away with murder and the theft of nuclear weapons. I enjoyed the female lead who demonstrates courage and a cool head under dire circumstances. Bailey's knowledge of the inner workings of the Marine Corps and his way of weaving it throughout the story are impressive.
I really liked this book. It was an exciting, page-turner. I read it in one sitting, staying up until after midnight to finish. I really liked the insight into the US Marine Corps training, the camaraderie, and the sense of responsibility for each other. I have some knowledge of the Marines and their commitment to the Corps and each other. I thought the book was completely faithful. I especially liked that the author decided to make the main character a female. It could have just as easily been male but the choice was a positive for the women and for the Corps.
Not On My Watch is truly an action-packed military vs. domestic terror adventure. Nice to read an action thriller with a female protagonist that doesn’t fall into the unrealistic wonder woman persona. Cassie is young and still learning the ropes, but her character reminds us that women can be tough soldiers and as dedicated as men. The plot is filled with in-depth situations drawn from actual experience and I applaud Bailey’s use of the “write what you know” method. My first read by this author but I enjoyed it enough to add others to my tbr list. If you like a Tom Clancy-esque story, you won’t be disappointed.
Not on My Watch is a suspense novel set in Oklahoma describing the heroic exploits of a young newly-minted Marine, Lance Corporal Cassandra Sing. Corporal Sing, a diminutive but tough daughter of a highly placed Homeland Security official, is spending time at Fort Sill acquiring emergency fire suppression skills. While Corporal Sing is called to suppress an actual wildfire near base, a domestic terror cell steals two nuclear warheads originally slated for decommissioning at the Fort. Corporal Sing is the only one to witness the murder of two base guards as the thieves flee in a stolen Army truck. Alone and without a phone, the plucky Marine has to serve justice.
The story’s timeline is short (roughly a day and a half) and can be clearly followed. The novel starts with presenting background information on the main characters and their motivations. Through flashbacks, Corporal Sing’s Paris Island bootcamp experience is well presented and very interesting. The plot gelled completely after the first few chapters of set up and then it was easy to cheer for our scrappy heroine. The plot is lean with realistic encounters; outcomes are brought about by normal people, not perfectly chiseled supermen or women with unbelievable ninja skills. My general success “bar” for any novel is whether the story is engaging enough within the first few chapters for me to want to finish; Not On My Watch cleared this hurdle with a simple premise: Will the nukes be recovered safely or will the terror cell triumph?
Though some of the Marine dialogue was a bit stiff, even for the Marine Corps, the military detail—jargon, chains of command, and equipment—was well presented and believable. Most minor characters are one-dimensionally described rather than revealed through action, but this was within the bounds of a terror plot novel: the “good” and “bad” guys are identified clearly and early. I was slowed down by some typos and some repetitive detail, but these were not dealbreakers. Mr. Bailey delivers a solid, succinct suspense experience.
Jeff Bailey https://jeffbaileyauthor.blogspot.com has published two novels. Not On My Watch was published in 2019. This is the 74th book I have completed in 2022.
I received an ARC of this book from the author with the expectation of delivering a fair and honest review. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own! Due to scenes of violence, I categorize this novel as R. The primary character is US Marine Lance Corporal Cassandra Sing.
Corporal Sing is an aviation fire recovery specialist - she runs into burning aircraft to rescue any surviving crew. She is in a training class at Ft. Sill in Oklahoma when she notices something suspicious. She had been separated from her fellow class members when they were deployed on base to fight a grass fire.
She must make a decision. Does she go for help? Or does she pursue the men who she thinks are ruthless terrorists? Armed only with her Marine training, she chooses to shadow the terrorists. From what she has seen, they will stop at nothing.
Will she be able to follow them without being seen? How will she be able to report them to the authorities? Will she survive?
I enjoyed the 3.5+ hours I spent reading this 178-page thriller. This is really more of a novella than a fun novel. It is full of edge-of-your-seat action. The chosen cover art is a bit plain, but it is OK. I give this novel a rating of 4.8 (rounded up to a 5) out of 5.
Oklahoma may seem like a completely boring place, but to Recruit Cassandra Sing, of the United States Marine Corp, it turns out to be her personal proving ground.
Jeff Bailey uses his own knowledge of the workings of the decommissioning of our country's Nuclear Weapons to create a frighteningly real story about homegrown terrorism.
Set in the time after the events of the World Trade Center bombing in Oklahoma City, Cassandra, or Cassie Sing, is training for fire fighting duties under chemical, nuclear and biological attacks.
Although the story starts with a lot of detail, once the characters are introduced, and danger becomes immanent, hold on to your hat!
I found this book to be disturbing, a wake up call as to how vulnerable our country is to threats of terrorism, both foreign and domestic. Although it was entertaining, I was left with much to think about.
I was asked by the author to review this book and received a copy of the book in exchange for the review.
A really good military thriller with lots of action. Trouble starts when Casandra "Cassie" Sing witnesses two MPs get murdered and a deuce-and-half rolls out the gate. Cassie decides to follow the truck, not realizing that it has two stolen nuclear warheads. She gets aboard the truck and rides to the terrorists' base of operations. From there she takes matters into her own hands. In the process getting shot. What happens after that, you gotta read this one. It is really good. Ooorah!!
Not on My Watch is a worthy read. Jeff Bailey has taken a catastrophic scenario and developed a plausible story that will keep you turning the pages. But what I appreciated most was that the protagonist was not superhuman--although tough and quick on her feet, she also had fears, doubts, and made mistakes. She's the kind of character who you might have met once, know as a friend, or have in your own family. Well done, Jeff.
The amount of detail about military and nuclear protocols shows Jeff's expertise and background experience without going overboard. The pacing of this story was excellent, with a great use of flashbacks for character development.
I love the grit and sheer determination that Lance Corporal Sing "Cassie" showed. Jeff showed the true emotions and will of a United States Marine and helped me, the reader, really feel it. I loved this book because of the terrifying possibility that this could actually happen!!
I'd say that "Not On My Watch" is a must read for any fans of the military thriller genre.
Jeff Bailey's Not on my Watch, highlights Jeff's knowledge of nuclear weapons and military procedures. It's helped him create a chillingly real tale of homegrown terrorism. This well-written thriller is fast-paced with a strong and courageous lead character in Cassandra Sing. This book was my introduction to this genre which I enjoyed very much.
If you like reading thrillers, thrillers that include terrorists, this book is for you. If you love satisfying stories about strong women, even better! The heroine of this one is a young woman marine, one gutsy gal!
Not On My Watch is a military thriller by Jeff Bailey that follows Lance Corporal Cassandra Sing (Cassie) as she tries to prevent a terrorist event involving stolen nuclear warheads from Fort Sill military base in Oklahoma.
The author has an extensive background in nuclear technologies and army assignments. The communication, protocol, training, and descriptors all feel plucked from a vivid memory rather than being created from scratch. This is a testament to Jeff’s background and one of the strongest triumphs of the novel.
The second strength is that the pace is fast. The bulk of the novel takes place in a 24-hour period which creates an electric plot. Jeff focuses on the action from the moment the book starts. The first thirty pages introduce us to the major players in the events about to unfold over backdrops of a grass fire training exercise featuring marines, a plot to steal a nuclear warhead, and a clever scene where a character uses knowledge of the environment to chase down a vehicle on foot. The writing style is reminiscent of a TV show or movie with multiple chapters utilizing a similar style of shifting POVs frequently to give us two or three perspectives on the same moment in time. Sometimes these POV shifts are very short and a single POV can last as little as half a page. This added an interesting perspective to the action as the moments Jeff chooses to repeat are often the ones with the highest stakes.
The third strength, Cassie is a strong protagonist and we get plenty of backstory for her. I like that Jeff chose to have a female lead. There are hints of Demi Moore in G.I. Jane coming through and I appreciated the change-up against the normal military thriller. Cassie is a feisty firecracker focused on getting the job done. Most of the rest of the characters are not given too much depth and you can tell if they are good or bad within a few pages of meeting them. A bit more backstory and insight for at least one of the bad guys may have helped the reader understand their motivations more, but this story is action-driven and not character-driven so be aware of that going in and you will be fine.
Military thriller is not a genre I am overly familiar with, but I have seen Sum of All Fears, 24, and the previously mentioned G.I. Jane which serve as my comparables. If you are a fan of any of those, Not On My Watch is an engaging story that offers a fresh perspective on a classic plot.
This is a fast-paced action-packed thriller where we follow Cassie Sing as two nukes are stolen. I am a sucker for strong female leads, and Sing is a compelling character.
Not On My Watch is well written and Lee Child's worthy. I imagined Cassie as a female Jack Reacher. I only hope this story is not true! If you are a fan of Lee Child, Diane Capri, or the Clancy novels, I think you will like this read.
An entertaining novel from beginning to end. Well-paced with believable characters throughout, especially private Cassie Sing, a fearless, pint-sized protagonist you can't help but root for as she makes decisions with far-reaching implications. Looking forward to further work from the author.
The author was kind enough to send me a copy of this novel in return for a review. I have to admit that I am a sucker for thrillers and action books and have been for many years. This book fit the genre. The main character was interesting, but I think some of the villains backgrounds should have been developed to some extent. The thing I liked best was the timeline. Except for some flashes from the past, the action take place over the course of a day, which makes for a book you don't want to put down. All in all, a pretty good effort and the perfect book to read on a rainy day.
Congratulations to Mr. Bailey on his latest creation – Not On My Watch. This book is gripping from the first page. Cassie Sing epitomizes what a Marine should be, relentless to the end. Follow her on her harrowing journey to thwart the bad guys. Don’t miss this very exciting and well written book – order it today.
I had the pleasure of reading "Not on My Watch", by Jeff Bailey.
The basic premise is one that is quite frankly, scary in its believability, because we have a number of crazies in this country with very similar ideas to the antagonists in this book. The hero is US Marine Cassandra Sing, who gets caught up in a theft of nuclear weapons from an Oklahoma military base by supremacists wanting to return to the original ideas of the Constitution, although apparently without the racist rhetoric that most such people in real life today embody.
The action is tense, and is occasionally interrupted by flashbacks in Sing's life, showing her progression into the Marines. It embodies her determination, strength, and devotion to her duty, which should be an example for all US military personnel. The flashbacks sometimes came at unexpected moments, but this isn't a bad thing. Occasionally, it did cause me to lose track of where the main story was, but I picked it up again pretty quickly.
If you, or anyone in your family, has been in the military, they'll see a lot of themselves in this story. For those who haven't, this story is a good way to better understand their mentality and commitment.
Kudos to Jeff Bailey for an outstanding story! I'm looking forward to reading his next one.
WOW, this story is downright scary because it is so believable! The author’s extensive background in nuclear weapons, the nuclear industry and the military is on full display and allows him to create a truly authentic military thriller. Combine this knowledge with his skill as a writer and you get one compelling page-turner that hooks you from the first page and doesn’t let you go until the thrilling climax. Cassandra Sing is one awesome Marine and makes for a great protagonist. Kudos to Jeff Bailey for crafting this well-written tale of modern heroism! Don’t plan on doing much else until you finish the book.
The title pretty much sums up what you can expect. Lance Corporal Cassie Sing is a young female marine who fights extreme fires, including aircraft and structural. After completing a training exercise, her team is dispatched to fight a range fire. Separated from her peers, Cassie witnesses a heavy military truck exiting the back gate of the base. When it is stopped by the MP's, the truck's occupants kill them and flee. Having no weapons or way to contact anyone, Cassie sets out after the men in the truck. After catching and climbing in the back, she finds herself a stowaway in the company of two stolen nuclear warheads.
This book is chock full of action and enough back story to keep this reader engaged. It reminded me of the Mack Bolan dime novels I read back in the '90s. I enjoyed the story, which is a variation on most action tales where the guy saves the day. Cassie's character is not Bruce Willis or Jason Statham, but she's a young marine who believes in her oath of service and executes her duties without question.
Jeff Bailey creates a world of peril in Not On My Watch. From the first pages, I was immersed in a place of smoke, fire, fear and intrigue in a heart-pounding race to abort an attempt at domestic, nuclear espionage. The everyday world of reality faded as Mr. Bailey reminded me of a virtually unknown cohort of heroines and heroes who protect us from threats foreign and domestic on a daily basis. Chief among them in Not On My Watch Is Lance Corporal Cassandra King. In Corporal King, a rare female military hero, Bailey ticks another of the characteristics of a great book … the compelling protagonist. King is fearless and relentless in her efforts to secure the peace. I cared about her well-being and was deeply invested in her cause. Buckle your seatbelt for her story. Jeff Bailey takes the reader on a white-knuckled roller coaster of a ride. Climb aboard and hang on for dear life in Not On My Watch.
Read this over the weekend, couldn't put it down. So much more than a story about terrorism, it's a study in human nature and provides insight into the how and why makings of heroes and villains. I loved the way the criminal's mind is exposed and how the author justifies their actions. The author creates a hero out of the least likely person, but proves the possibility by revealing a background and reasons why it is believable. In the Bible, God always chose the least likely to serve his purpose. This author avoids the super hero mantra and provides us with a character who possesses nothing more than a strong heart, will and discipline to pull it off. The heroes qualities are something we can all possess, if we make the right choices. I strongly recommend this book for entertainment and insight. I read it like a writer.
With nuclear weapons making news headlines, I came across this military thriller and was glad I picked it up. I purchased a Kindle version of the book and read it on a short flight. Captivated by the action-packed story, I barely noticed when the plane landed. The short length of the book was perfect for this occasion and it kept me entertained.
The author had a career working with nuclear weapons and describes in terrifying detail how easy it is to steal nuclear weapons. That level of detail coupled with a charismatic female protagonist made the read extremely enjoyable.
Interesting story with real-life expertise in nuclear weapons handling and the surrounding security measures, not to mention military training. Those elements give it a solid base in reality. Those details take it beyond people dressed in fatigues to people living military life. The flashbacks to Marine training were educational and held my interest. There are no super heroes here; these are real people showing real heroism and pride in service.
