The end of the world is a bad time to fall in love.
Joshy is a normal kid from an average town suffering through a mediocre road trip with his family. He's positive this vacation will be just as bland and uninteresting as every one that came before it.
Then he meets Debra.
She's everything he's ever wanted in a girl. She's smart, funny, and radiant. They love all the same things, right down to the same obscure comic books. There's a definite spark between them.
Literally.
The moment they finally kiss, a bolt of electricity from Debra's mouth knocks Joshy unconscious.
He wakes up to a shocking truth.
Debra is an alien.
Worse yet, another race called the Globorians are about to invade Earth and enslave all of humanity.
Now, Joshy and Debra must race against time to stop the Globorian plot and save the planet before it's too late.

# Calling occupants of interplanetary craft # sang the Carpenters, way back when and Invasion by the Master of the Sci-fi Graphic novels and, as (in this case) entertaining YA stories, that has fantastic and humorous at times MCs and homages to one of more popular films, books, characters, celebrities, events etc.
Invasion is like a weird but lovable mix of 'Lost In Space' meets Close Encounters of the Third Kind, with a sprinkling of a (reversed) Home Alone scenario Scooby Doo episode and even a dash of Mork and Mindy - whew!! Yes, it has 'bad guys' - alien invaders come to take over Earth and enslave its citizens - but as in several of the above examples, the nosy, nerdy kid - and in Invasion, a young, lost 'female' alien, rather than a canine sleuth/MC combo - outwit the invaders quite easily in the end.
Don't imagine this detracts from the enjoyment and the well-written, rather poignant storyline, for one second - it sooo doesn't! However to find out what happens between our unusual new MC partnership of friends, you'll have to 'splash down' at your nearest bookstore and grab a copy of Invasion by Russell Nohelty. Go now!
Poor Joshy. That's my first thought reading through this book. All he wanted was to stay in his hotel room playing video games. Instead, he ends up in the middle of an alien invasion when his girlfriend ends up being more than meets the eye.
With plenty of moments that made me laugh and great characterization (I know more than a few people who were like Joshy in high school, including myself) this is a book I've read a couple of times already, along with the other parts of the trilogy. Between this and the Katrinaverse books Russell is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine. I highly recommend the Invasion saga to anyone who likes science fiction.
I loved this story. It provided EVERYTHING I look for in an SF story. It's funny, full of great pop culture references that made me smile and battles that would do the very best tactical video games proud. When Joshy gets dragged to Vegas on a road trip with his family, he figures it will be just another summer vacation, and then he meets a girl; a very special girl, and when he kisses her, EVERYTHING changes. A little romance, a lot of adventure, an intrepid band of heroes, a universe full of strange and, in some cases very nasty aliens and a headlong rush to save the earth. What else could you ask for?
The end of the world is a bad time to fall in love. That line says it all, doesn't it? But since I'm a bit chattier than that, let's jump into the review.
The Good: Characterization. Among the many things that Russell is good at, characterization is right up there at the top. He creates characters that you love or love to hate, but never that you're indifferent to. Then, he pulls you into the story, leaving you guessing as to what's going to happen next, who you can trust, and whether Josh and Debra can save us all before it's too late.
The Bad: The use of the name Joshy. The kid hated it so I hated it. Dang families who won't listen to your feelings on things like what you want to be called!
The Summary: If you love science fiction, I strongly recommend this book. Any book that can get me attached to someone who might be a bad guy is a book worth reading and this book did just that. Russell is an incredibly skilled author and I've yet to read any of his books that I wouldn't recommend. If you haven't checked him out yet, please do...you'll have hours and hours of enjoyable reading to look forward to.
It starts out as a boring road trip, but it doesn't stay boring for very long! Joshy meets Debra and knows within seconds that she is the girl of his dreams. Of course, the road is never smooth for young love, but to say that this one is bumpy would be an understatement! To learn that your new girlfriend is an alien is shocking, but, on top of that, to learn that there are a huge amount of aliens here and that one sort, the Globorians are due to take over the Earth - how could you possibly cope with that? Joshy and Debra can only try to do their best to make people aware of the coming doom and motivate them, and all the other aliens to do something about it. This is a first class YA adventure novel with love, excitement and humour all built in. Beautifully written, highly recommended!
