Rate this book
With the blessings of his people, Souma has concluded his coronation and wedding ceremony. Now his little sister, Tomoe, is heading to her first day of school at the Royal Academy. As she takes her initial step through the gates, she’s greeted with...

“Oh! Hey! Isn’t that Lady Tomoe over there?!”

“Despite being a refugee, she was adopted by the former royal couple because of her gift...”

“That means she’s incredibly talented, right?”

Ever since Souma’s “if you have a gift” speech, the academy has turned from classism to meritocracy, and Tomoe, whose gift has been recognized by Souma himself, is drawing a lot of attention...?!

Here comes volume 11 of the revolutionary, administrative, fantasy series!

This series is less about governance and world building and more about character creation, development, marriage, offspring, etc. In all of the series, Volume 2, 8 and 10 actually had action (war, conflict, etc.) the rest, regretfully puts the reader in a coma time and time again.
The more the series progresses the less majestic and kingly the main character becomes and in volume 10 Souma was actually confirmed as the Friedonia King. He is not an honorable main character (lies to everybody before they meet him), nor does he possess diplomatic prowess or a talent to govern well.
He is just this regular guy from another world that became the main character in this alternate reality world. He is not powerful, nor does he possess extraordinary skills. Well maybe being a pushover to getting married and breed with women can be considered to be his super power. The potential he had with adapting the great ideas from his former world are lost, when Souma's priorities are to settle down, have endless dialogues and experiences with his 5 wives and two children.
This volume is another coma inducing volume. It deals with Tomoe (mystic wolf) and her little friends (Ichiha and Yuriga) going to school in Friedonia.
Another thing, author quotes 2 famous saying by Machiavelli, as if those 2 sayings, that are really not that good, could carry the whole weight of the main plot arc of this light novel. Machiavelli is famed to be good at getting and maintaing power (but Cesar Borgia who was his lord, did not really get or maintain power).
Fuuga Haan is actually the "hero" of this story and not Souma. Souma is eclipsed by Haan. Haan will probably be the one to defeat the Demon Lord in the end. For Souma to settle down, have more wives and more children, it just means he has so much more to lose and thus will not risk his life, or the life of his family to actually lead the defeat of the main antagonist of this series. Souma is a pushover. Nor does he seek wealth or has an ambition for wold domination as Haan and the Demon Lord sure do.
So Souma's main motivation is team-building, family-building and is considered by Maslow (expert in classifying motivation), a mid-tiered motivation, with a mid-level emotional intelligence. Maybe because Souma was an orphan in his former world, author gives so much importance to his "new" family, and desire to not be lonely no more, that it just kills this story. Souma lost both his parents and grandparents on Earth. So maybe the title of this light novel should be: How a summoned pushover, extremely lonely guy, made up a huge new family in a new world, by Dojyomaru. At least this new title would hold true to the content and plot arcs of this series.

A slog to get through

Most of the first 120 or so pages felt largely like fluff—the boring kind. Cameos of characters in a mock battle purely for the sake of having them appear. Around chapter 3, however some good plot progression in regards to the monsters and demons started which was nice. Overall this volume really showed me how dry and 2d the wives are in comparison to many of the secondary characters. The wives just don't have any depth and a lot of characters are missing prevalent flaws. I'm in this far though, so I'll continue. But I hope the following volumes are less dry.

I am pot committed at this point to this tale but…

The last volume and this one aren’t _bad_ but they aren’t filled with interesting ideas. Instead we seem to be spending time with the cast of characters (well over 16 I think at this point) as they slice of life through a fantasy month or so.
I am not so … enthralled with the characters that I find their actions to be enjoyable by themselves. I want more of the ideas to be explored instead of what I am being dealt.
Some of the issue is cultural/linguistic translation. English has over a million words, so the stories written in English often become classics more for their choice of words and the flow and rhythm that skillful use can invoke. (The hobbit is a fairly basic story if you were to strip it off Tolkien’s often purple prose.) Where a translated light novel can bounce against a lack of opportunity to use English’s strength. There are little in the way of descriptive scenes in this novel, as that’s not a Goal of the writer. There are ideas here, characters here, but I am certain there are uses of language that are lost in translation as they go so far as to spell out (in this book) some of the monsters as they would be written in Kanji. The sounds the same but as different meanings linguistic poetry/pun work is totally lost. I get the _feeling_ that it was there and is missing but my own knowledge of the language isn’t enough for me to go and figure out what was lost.
It’s like the offhand references to different anime. I am fairly certain I know which ones they mean because I am a Huge Nerd but they don’t spell it out and I would totally believe that the odd reference sails right past me.
Catching the author’s intent helps push you forward, if that is missed… the story itself continues but that Energy/momentum is missing.
We are 11 books in to a series that is at this review 17 long. I will finish it, much in the same way I will finish game of thrones. More because I feel a drive to do so now than I feel carried along by the momentum of the story.

The book is fine. I liked the story about the Academy and how Ichiha is being treated now. Still, I didn't feel like the plot was advancing much. And the book was rather small.

Most of the new queens I find are not really aporting to the story. Aisha is a glutton bodyguard Sweet but meaningless. Juna is beautiful and talented, but I feel like her character could be replaced by Excel easily. Roroa could be left as a little sister. There is nothing from her but (bad) comedic relief. Naden is a means of transportation. By the rules of the world, she had to be married to Souma but besides that, she only predicts the weather. Liscia is the only one who seems relevant; she's necessary for Souma to ascend to the throne, she gave birth to the twins and she's Souma's voice of reason.

In all honesty, if most of these girls had been left with retainer positions like Hakuma and Poncho, not much would have changed.

Light novels are the best to listen to while multitasking after all since there's so much dialogue that's easy to process.... this 11th book is the school arc featuring the younger generation (tomoe, ichiha chima, yuriga, velza, lucy).

There are also side scenes featuring the younger friend group attending events in the kingdom where souma introduces new research that might have the potential to really advance the kingdom (E.g. work / battle songs, monster research).

This series overall has been amazing fun.
I sincerely love the idea of using great power to create a happy life for those you love.
Later entries like this one have very silly parts, but Souma fought hard to be able to enjoy a silly life.
That makes me enjoy this story.

Good Read

King Souma's charges, Tomoe and her friends, are attending the Royal Academy. Festivals, symposiums, and play ensue. I like the humor, romance, and application of soft power. I look forward to the next book.

This volume feels a bit transitional and over the place, with a bit of school life, a bit of symposium to expose new ideas about monsters, and somehow, Halloween/obon. It's probably all going somewhere but most of it fell a bit short.

Bon Tome qui nous raconte l'histoire de la vie scolaire de Tomoe et de ses amis. De plus, on en apprend pas mal sur les montres et les démons avec la conférence dessus.
