Robinette Waterson began writing stories shortly after she learned to read. Given her predilection for literature and history, especially of the Victorian era, it is not surprising that she ventured into the alternative historical style of steampunk. From there, it was just a short detour, down a quaint and dark alleyway, before she found herself writing Victorian steampunk erotica and other steamy romantica.

"Steam Geared" and “The Tryst” are the first two publications in the “Steam Geared” series. "The Hotel Belladonna" series is continuing to roll out, with another book expected in Spring 2024.

This was a short read and only the second steampunk story I've read, but I'm starting to realize I need to check out more in this genre because it's really enjoyable. This was just a short erotic tryst between lovers, but it's a very inventive read. You've got the Victorian era in there, but you've also got inventions that don't exist in the modern world, like the bed, but I could see eventually coming to pass with things like Siri and Alexa in the mix.

At first, it reads like this clandestine meeting in the Victorian era, but when you get to the end, you realize, there's actually some romance and sweetness to the meeting that makes the story even more enjoyable

Steam Geared: The Tryst, by Robinette Wilson is a steampunk short story set in an alternate Victorian era. As I understand it, this short is part of a wider series of novels.

I think Wilson used the steampunk setting very well to make this stand out. The writing is refined and polished, whilst you can easily tell the world-building has been thoroughly thought out. I thought the steampunk/futuristic bed and its features were a high point and a unique idea.

It does feel like the start to a novel, however, and would work well in that fashion. Perhaps the short story was just released to be a taster for the full series.

"Steam Geared: The Tryst: A Short Story of Victorian Steampunk Erotica" is a steamy short story painting a well-written encounter of two lovers sharing a moment of passion over a bed that can give them the visuals they need for their sexual fantasies.

I enjoyed the rich text of Robinette Waterson’s writing style. The third person P.O.V. perfectly windows the setting. Although I thought it fell a tad bit on visual representation than the feeling. The intimate moments were artistic. There were comparisons I didn’t expect to read, and it entertained me as a result. This short story erotica has a fine, classy — Victorian Steampunk style.

Move over Alexa. Make way for an intelligent bed that creates 4D scenes based on conversations with your lover.
Add role play, a strip tease, a rich descriptive of Victorian couture and Waterson's Steam Geared: The Tryst, a short story of Victorian Steampunk Erotica, becomes a “pleasure” to read. I especially enjoyed the twist at the end.

Fantastically written, spill your wine funny, and incredibly sexy. Robinette Waterson breathes life into the often panting anticipations of machinery. So rare in genre fiction to see brilliance in erotica, inventiveness in romance, and plan old funny in the machinations of coupling. Perfectly voiced in the SteamPunk world. A true Gem.

amusing

This was an amusing and creative story. The language and descriptions are over-the-top, making the tryst more humorous than amorous.
