Refreshingly original!

This is quite an interesting book, in a style of voice and frame of time and fantasy I’ve not picked up before, but from the first page it held my attention. Written in first-person, this novella is set during the times before the US was a country in and of itself, when it was still sliced down the middle by bitter feuding, slavery, and civil war. And yet, in these bleakest of settings, a moment of intrigue. The main character, William can Dijk, speaks directly to the reader. More still, this world of old is decorated and presented in a new way, by adding the spice blend of Steampunk technology and touch of mystery.

What readers will find fascinating is the mind-bending way in which the world from what we know in history books changed. How similar and yet different a life of simplicity can be brought splendor by a technology that seems like magic in reins, guided by the careful lead of scientists, and the absolute careless manipulation of politicians and the rich.

I usually try to list other authors of similar genres and styles, but as he is my first of this style of writing and niche of fantasy, I will say this: If you enjoyed Doctor Who, especially those of David Tennant (the 11th Doctor), you will love this book.

The author has imagined an entirely different USA at the time after the Civil War. He pulls in SteamPunk elements with history revision. The revision works well for the story he is telling, and he tells it well. You will despise some characters, and appreciate others - even for their flaws.

I found one character really carried the story, even though she was not the protagonist. She however was the reason the story succeeds. This is a story for the underdogs, and they are plentiful.
