The rebellious miners of Ydro-Down have won a fortune in the rare crystalline mineral that empowers intergalactic passage, but other players on the Rim won’t take the loss without a fight.

Arjay—incarcerated as Miner 870—has pledged his considerable hacking prowess (and a few other illicit skills) to saving Ydro-Down from those who would subjugate its people again. But there was a time he championed the rule of law, and when he accidentally uncovers a legal loophole that might legitimize the miners’ claim, he dares to hope maybe he can reclaim the charmed life he lost.

What he found was a half-feral girl.

Tick’s mothers buried her in the heart of Ydro-Down to protect her when their colony was attacked for the valuable qubition found there. Imprisoned in cryo, Tick wakes to her world still in danger. Though she’s kept herself barely alive scavenging the depths, her encounter with the big, clever miner convinces her to seek a life out of the darkness.

But on the Obsidian Rim, only might makes right. And stepping out into the light might mean reaching for the stars…or igniting a fire that burns everything to ash.

I grew up reading SFF, buying the biggest books I could with my chore money. While I loved the action, adventure, and exciting worlds, most of those stories were missing…kissing! Now I read and write paranormal romance and science fiction romance which I think mix the best of all worlds. I also write urban fantasy romance as Jessa Slade and sexy contemporary romance as Jenna Dales.

I spend most of my time at my computer thinking about stories, in my garden thinking about stories, or walking my dog thinking about stories. Hmm, I think there’s a theme… 🙂

I’m loving the concept of the shared universe created by the authors of the Obsidian Rim books. The several authors’ series within this universe are all separate from each other but work with each other using the general background of the Obsidian Rim region. I got into this overarching series because it’s first book, Gravity, was also the first book in the Cryoborn Gifts series by a favorite author, Maggie Lynch. It was so good that while waiting for its book 2 I figured it would be worthwhile to see how other authors treated this universe. Elsa Jade was the second such author. Her first contribution was Rock Rift, first in her Edge of Sunrise series (and Obsidian Rim Book 2). That book, on turn, was so much fun that I simply had to turn to Fire Strike: Edge of Sunrise #2 (Obsidian Rim Book 5). These two books were total addictive pleasure. The stars here, reluctant rebel Gavyn Grey and administrator turned sympathizer Yumi Swinton in Edge of Sunrise #1, and Arjay and Tick in Edge of Sunrise #2, really make these books. They’re wonderfully crafted and genuine while very unique in their backgrounds and personalities. That’s a neat trick to carry off yet this author does it on style. I love sci-fi romance when it’s done right, i.e., where the romance feels real and the sci-fi is good sci-fi and not just an excuse for lots of sex. These books easily pass that test and are a true treat to read. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from this author and will be happily willing to try out of Obsidian Rim series by authors who are new to me.
