The Northumberland Nine #6

The Secrets Of The Sixth Night

Rate this book

Lunette Marsden is a gifted healer but falling for a spy could leave her with a broken heart.

The Earl of Densmore and his younger brother, Mr. Denham, are guests of Selbourne Castle for a house party honoring Luna and her sisters. But the brothers are up to something mysterious. When Luna discovers the earl is injured, she insists on treating his wound. She secretly tends to him in his room masking her attraction to him as best as she can. But the more she comes to know him, the more her scientific mind gives way to the desires of her heart.

All his life Callen has tried to do the right thing—usually because his brother was always doing the wrong thing. As the future Earl of Densmore, his parents relied on him to be the leader, the good influence, which put him at odds with his brother and caused no shortage of animosity between them. But now Callen is preparing to make the biggest sacrifice of all by leaving his home, his country, and his one chance at love to save Theo from the hangman.

And he doesn’t want to do it.

Luna Marsden not only healed the bullet wound in his side with her tender mercy, she awoke something in him that made leaving her, and the growing desire between them, impossible. Choosing between his damned brother and Luna should be easy, but he’d spent his life protecting his brother and turning his back now meant Theo’s death.

Luna doesn’t want to stand between two brothers who need each other more than they realize. But Mr. Denham threatens everything she holds dear. She must find a way to save a man who doesn’t want to be saved or lose the love of her life.

The Secrets of the Sixth Night is the 6thbook in Dayna Quince’s Regency Romance series, The Northumberland Nine.

Dayna Quince was only fourteen when she developed a serious addiction to romance novels. What began as an innocent desire to read became an all-out obsession with the romance genre. She gave book reports on romance novels, got in trouble for reading during lectures, and would rather spend her time reading than attending high school parties. After all, high school boys could not compete with the likes of Stephanie Laurens' Devil Cynster.

After getting her first job, her addiction only got worse. She now had her own money to spend and a car to get to Barnes and Noble as frequently as she wanted. She managed to maintain a somewhat normal life, marrying her high school boyfriend, who was aware he was competing with fictional men for her attention. She soon began writing her own romance novels, inspired by her love for all things romance.

Dayna and her family live in Southern California with their two children and three fur babies. She is happiest at home, where she can be with her family and write to her heart’s content.

Also published under Ella J. Quince and D.L. Rose.

Luna is the healer of the family, she is caring but also has an innate ability to understand what might be troubling a person. Whilst collecting plants at midnight, she comes across Callen, Earl of Densmore and his brother Theo. Callen has a serious injury and Luna takes care of him, an attraction to each other begins. Callen has looked outmoded his brother since their parents died, getting him out of scrapes and covering his debts. Now it is time for a change. I enjoyed this story, two likeable main characters, Theo, not so likeable. There are a few surprises and I’m looking forward to reading Theo’s story. It will be good to view things from his point of view. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Callen Denham, the Earl of Densmore, and his younger brother, Mr. Theodore Denham, have been tricked into attending a house party honoring the nine Marsden sisters, all destitute and in need of husbands. But Lunette Marsden senses the brothers are up to something mysterious and when she notices that Lord Densmore is grievously injured, she insists on treating him. She tries to keep her focus purely clinical, but the more time she spends tending to him in the privacy of his room, the harder it is for her to hide her attraction to him.

Callen has always been the responsible one, the good influence on his younger brother, and responsible for everyone on the estates belonging to the earldom. He's also responsible for keeping his brother out of scrapes, which has caused much tension and resentment between them. Now Callen is preparing to leave England and everything he knows and loves behind to save Theo from the hangman's noose. The more time he spends with Luna, the less he wants to leave. The growing desire between them is impossible to ignore, but at the same time, he can't turn his back on the brother he's spent his life protecting. Luna is equally reluctant to come between the brothers and their untenable situation may just be enough to keep the lovers apart.

This is one of the best books in this series for me. I loved Luna and how she was thoughtful and intelligent, not dramatic and air-headed. I also loved the fact that Callen knew what he wanted very early on and set about figuring out how to make it happen. I'm looking forward to Nicolette's book now.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Another delightful book in the Northumberland Nine series! It's Lunette Marsden's turn to find her HEA at the Selbourne Castle for a two week house party honoring her and her sisters. She's the healer in the family and I'm always so fascinated with the herbs and such that they used back then. Her knowledge comes in handy when she helps the Earl of Densmore, Callen, heal the bullet wound he has.

Callen and his brother Theo have such completely different characters....Callen is the serious and responsible one while Theo is forever getting himself in trouble. Callen feels responsible for him and is forever putting his own life on hold to help him get out of trouble. Once he meets Lunette, though, he realizes that he deserves happiness and must let Theo handle his own life.

Although I loved the story, I found there was something missing in this one, it wasn't as exciting as the first 5 books. I noticed as well that the passion and heat between Lunette and Callen was almost non existent near the end, almost like it had been forgotten and put aside. Otherwise, it was a great story:)

I received an ARC of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

The most innocent of happenings can sometimes lead to love. Or was it fate that had Lunette Marsden searching for that herb that gave off a glow at night trekking to the beach? Seeing men talking and a ship anchored in the water? Callen, the Earl of Densmore seemed only to be getting his younger brother out of scrapes. Well this time stepping in between a bullet meant for his brother was going to change their lives. Now what to do when one of the nine Marsden sisters, Luna, had seen them on the beach?
A wonderful story of healing in body and spirit and sacrificing for family above all others. Callen was wounded and Luna helped heal the outward wound but also left him with a strong desire. But he had to get his brother out of the country or his brother could end up hanging for dueling and possibly the death of the opponent. Would he never have a life of his own?
Another delightful if a little darker than the other books in this series but no less enjoyable. What is amazing is that all of the stories of the nine sisters are happening at the same time and has kept me highly anticipating each story. Although this can be read alone, I would not miss any of this series!

Definitely one of the stronger books in the series. I liked the main characters and the story was interesting, but still too much redundancy with repeating scenes from previous book's over and over.

I'm not looking forward to the next book, Nicolette and Theo both came across as immature brats, and Theo was just overwhelmingly selfish and unlikable. I mean it sounded like the guy had been throwing a temper tantrum for nearly a decade because he was upset his parents died. What a loser.

Lunette find herself patching up the wounded Callen, who spends most of his time trying to keep his brother out of trouble.

I found this to be a pleasant read, although there are still too many mistakes.

I have read several books in the Northumberland Nine series, and this one has darker themes than the other ones. The book even starts at night, when Luna is out attempting to gather herbs that are only easy to distinguish at night. She happens to see three men in conversation on the beach. Are they smugglers? Is their host involved? At least two are other members of the house party, two brothers. The two men are not pleased that she has seen them, and after some amount of time, figure out that she hasn’t seen or heard anything and swear her to silence. The brothers have been caught up in drama caused by the younger one, not smuggling, and the elder brother is wounded from stepping between his brother and the man he was dueling with. The hero's brother is definitely an irresponsible young man who makes bad decisions and doesn't seem to care how his actions affect his brother.

I didn't care for this book as much as I did for the others in the series that I've read. The others felt relatively light and fun, but this one had a fair amount of troublesome issues, including that the hero could have died without the care of the heroine. I like my Regencies to be a bit more upbeat and more about the play of manners and decorum than things like duels and possible death. I am an RN, and some of the ways that healing practices were portrayed were highly inaccurate for the time. It makes sense to our modern understanding to sterilize equipment and think of not introducing more potential means for infection, but people back then wouldn't have thought that way. The germ theory of infection was not a part of medical science until much later in the 1800s and even then acceptance was slow (20+ years). I did like the other books in the series, so I will continue with it, but I did find this book a disappointment compared to the rest.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Selbourne Castle was hosting a two-week House Party to introduce the Marsden daughters (the Northumberland Nine) in the hope they would meet a gentleman and receive a marriage proposal. Without a brother in the family of nine females to inherit their father’s estate, poor though it was, the sisters needed to marry for their protection. Callen Denham, the Earl of Densmore, and his younger brother, Mr. Theodore Denham, have been invited to the party.

Lunette Marsden, known for her healing and herb capabilities, gathers plants at night, notices Lord Densmore is badly injured by a gunshot wound he sustained protecting his brother, and insists on treating his wound. As she gets to know him better, she feels the attraction to him growing deeper.

Since Callen has always been the reliable brother -- dealing with Theo’s mistakes, getting him out of trouble, paying his debts -- he had been preparing to leave England to protect his troublesome brother from serious consequences. But now that he has met Luna, he is no longer sure that he really wants to leave. Will he come to the realization that his brother needs to begin taking care of his own messes? Will he put his own love and happiness first this time?

This was another wonderful story in this series. Luna is delightful, intelligent and caring. Callen likewise puts others first, which could be a problem if he cannot allow his brother to grow up and assume responsibility for himself. What will he decide to do? Grab your book and see what direction this story line will take. Will there be a HEA or will he leave and not look back?

Enjoyable, but not quite as good as rest of series 3.5Stars

Luna's story (sister six of Northumberland Nine) was just as enthralling as previous books, until the last chapters.
Luna, the healer of her family, is a refreshing heroine. She's smart and capable with a wonderfully dry sense of humor. Callan begins as a swoon-worthy hero, but somewhere along the way his responsible leadership dissolves into an inability to make decisions.
The strength of both characters along with their sizzling chemistry, gets swept to the corner near the end..
Practical matters and overcoming obstacles to HEA take center stage. Unfortunately at this point, Luna's humor, Callan's appeal and their romantic connection diminishes.

It seems wrapping up the problems before the HEA, and including connections to the other sister stories, pushed aside the most entrancing portions of this romance.
That said I'm still hooked on this series and would recommend reading some early series books before this one. - 3.5 Stars

Note - Kindle Unlimited: Most of series is currently free on K.U. I would encourage readers to take advantage and read the whole series, esp. those who enjoy historical romances with a bit of sizzle.

The Secrets of the Sixth Night is sixth book in Northumberland Nine Series. The series is based on a family with 9 girls who are trying to find husbands. This is the first book in the series that I read and it was good as a stand-alone. This is Lunette “Luna” and Callen’s, the Earl of Densmore, story. Luna and her sisters are at a house party and one night while Luna was collecting herbs she wonders down to the beach and runs into Callen and his brother. Callen doesn’t want to tell Luna the real reason they were meeting a ship so he tells her that he is an English spy. Luna discovers Callen’s injury and insist on treating his wounds. Callen is trying to save his brother but has fallen in love with Luna. Can they have their HEA?

The book was well written and started at a good pace but seemed to slow down towards the middle. It also introduced some of Luna’s sister and their romances. I didn’t really care for the sister’s side romances because it ruined the rest of the books for me since their HEA was written in the ending of this book.

This is romantic, entertaining and intriguing. Theo is a spoiled child who is having a perpetual temper tantrum. Callen is caring, responsible and selfless. Luna is sweet, determined and stubborn. They are all at a house party to introduce Luna and her sisters to eligible gentlemen, but really Callen and Theo are there hiding from possibly being charged with a crime. When Luna discovers that Callen has been injured, she takes it upon herself to aid him, whether he wants her help or not. They have to fight an attraction from the minute they meet, Callen because he plans on leaving England, and Luna because she thinks that she's not good enough for him. Drama follows Theo wherever he goes, most of the time because it's caused by him. When Luna learns the reason behind Callen and Theo's trouble, she is heartbroken and angry. I really liked Luna, she's tough and smart, too smart for scheming Theo. I enjoyed reading this book, and look forward to the next book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my voluntary and honest opinion of it.

Siblings.

Luna is one of the nine Marsden sisters looking for a wealthy husband at a house party. In search of a star flower, she seems something she shouldn’t.

Callen, Lord Densmore spends all his time rescuing his brother Theo Denham from one scrape after another. He literally took a bullet for him. (Dueling).

They are hiding out from the law.
The house party was a good place to hide out.

Luna and Callen exchange witty banter and flirting. Theo tries to chaperone them to annoy Callen.

Is this one mess Callen wants to stay knee deep in with Luna.
Recommend.

Another enchanting adventure of the Marsden sisters attending the house party with all the handsome, eligible gentlemen. This one features Luna, the herb healer, and cook for her family. She meets Callen, who’s an Earl , and his brother Theo, who are hiding secrets, and do not get along with one another. As Luna is able to bring physical healing to Callen she also tries to heal the family rift between the brothers. Will Callen have to choose between his brother, the only family he has, and the lady he has come to love?

Quince I am hooked on this series!
This was a very enjoyable novella and Luna was a wonderful heroine. Luna is smart, capable, and a grand sense of humor. I loved the interaction between her and Callan. Now Callan is the responsible gentleman who gets his socks knocked off. It was great reading. This is a charming additional to “The Northumberland Nine” series. Pick this one up or perhaps the whole collection all the books are worth reading. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

I liked that Luna knew about medicinal herbs and was a healer. She uses her knowledge save Callen, Lord Densmore from an infected bullet wound. Like the other stories in this series the romantic feelings develop quickly during the house party. Callen wants a relationship with her, but it isn’t settled whether or not he has to flee the country with his brother Theo. I didn’t like Theo as much, so it will be interesting to see if he becomes a better man in the next book.

This is the first novel from Dayna Quince I have read, but oh my just the right blens of Romance and Spice. The characters of Callen and Luna were well written, and I even found a soft spot in my heart for Theo. The story line was interesting and makes me want other novels about these 9 sisters, and of course MoM is expecting another, lets hope it is BOY! Highly recommend.

This is the first book I have read by Dayna Quince and I would like to read more in this series. The characters were well written and the storyline was very good. Will Callen give up on Luna's love to protect Theo again or will he make Theo take responsibility for his own actions?
