I am officially a divorcee who is muddling through a midlife crisis. As if being single in my forties isn’t traumatizing enough, my ex tried to kill me, my best friend thinks orcs are coming after us, the town is convinced I’m a witch, and my daughter moved back in with me. These last few months have been a hectic ride, and the fun isn’t over yet. I’m in dire need of a job, so the smart thing would be to apply for some mind-numbing work. Something easy where all you have to do is show up. The bills must be paid. Instead, I’ve decided to go out on a scary limb and open my own shop. What was I thinking? As if I am not stressing enough, I am having a string of horrid luck. Attempted murder. Assault. Vandalism. Someone is trying to mess up my life. And I’m so done with it. I’ve been given a second chance. I am on my way to becoming a happier, healthier me, and I am not letting anyone screw that up. But what am I supposed to do when the line between reality and the impossible starts to blur? Do I see a doctor for medication or begin to accept that, just maybe, magic does exist? And would somebody please find my ex-husband? He’s escaped jail and is apparently threatening to kill me again. #PWF

2nd book in the Midlife Mulligan series. Paranormal women’s fiction
Naomi Rousseau is divorced (see the first book), and has moved to a small town where everyone thinks she’s a witch. She denies it, but strange things are happening to her and all around the town. The cottage Naomi inherited from her grandmother is special. Whenever Naomi needs something in the house, it provides. Daughter moves in? Another bedroom. Car totaled? A garage appears with grandmas old car Betsy that runs just fine. When the house suddenly stops cleaning itself, Naomi has to find out why quickly before it collapses on top of her.
Entertaining and bit strange. Obviously not all the pieces in this puzzle have been reviewed. The paranormal level is upped in this second book quite a bit. What I do understand is that the author is on a keto diet because all the carb free food is detailed meal, after meal, after meal. I love my carbs, but some of items sounded pretty good. And who doesn’t like bacon? Naomi does need to learn to like herself. Her negative self image needs a turnaround and not just because she’s lost weight or schedules surgery.
Naomi Rousseau has moved to a small town after her ex, the psychopath, tried to kill her. She now lives in her Grandmother's magical cottage that was passed down to her. Turns out Naomi is a witch, but noone explained that to her. It is a fun series, however, there is too much" we will tell you later". And, "You'll find out" and this drags on so far for two books. It also has a LOT of detail about how she is too old and has sagging skin and so on. Yes, we get that..but we are talking about a 40 something not an 80 something. I just don't need that much detail. Or geez, find a solution and stop whining about it. And the character seems to be oblivious to what is going on. I mean how many times do you need to almost die before you decide to find out what the heck is really going on? I very rarely ever review a book with low stars because I think if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all. However, wouldn't it be nice to have a heroine that actually gets it together and kicks some butt? Without just stumbling into it or staying alive by accident? Or having someone rescue her? Just saying.
So yes this is good and yes I’ll read the next one but this character has to be the most annoying one I’ve encountered in a while. SPOILER After so many people talking to her about magic and her even seeing strange thing things a lot, it takes being injured and attacked for it to sink in. Her constantly brushing things off is a great annoyance to this reader and it’s a testament to this writers previous skills that I continue with this storyline to get to the (hopefully) final book....next..
This is book #2 of the Midlife Mulligan Series in the #PWF genre.
I really enjoyed book #1 and I was super excited to read book #2.
What I didn't like: - The inner conflict of the main character. I feel like the character is not growing in relation to her acceptance of being a witch. - Too many characters and not enough background info on them. I did not really learn anything new about several of the supporting characters. It felt like they were just there. -Slow pace. The book did not really pick up for me until about 70%.
What I loved about this book: - Character growth relating to moving forward: opening up her shop, continuing to press on despite significant traumatic experiences, considering dating one of the supporting characters. - Friendships between characters
I am still planning to read book #3 and see how the series ends. This book is not bad, I just struggled with the inner conflict, not much supporting character background and pacing.
In “On the Way” the second in the “Midlife Mulligan” series the life of Naomi Rousseau, the 40+ year -old divorcee who returned to her grandmother’s cabin in Cambden Ontario after her husband tried to kill her is still topsy-turvy. In this plot she’s struggling to open her own business, develop a relationship with her daughter Wendy (Minnie) Dunrobin, and to deal with the men in her life as strange and frightening events continually leave her perplexed and looking for answers.
In this delightfully riveting magic-filled plot mystery and suspense build with the escape of Naomi’s husband Martin from prison; a haunting in her friend Darryl’s house; a tree smashing the hood of her car; an attack by orcs ;and Winnie’s creepy boyfriend. And this is only the beginning of mishaps that leave her frustrated as she faces assault, vandalism and attempts on her life only to be startled by the dawning of her magic. Yet through it all Naomi grows in spirit and character as she courageously rises to every traumatic event bolstered by the love of friends and family.
Muddling through midlife crisis and lacking in self-confidence after losing weight, romance whirls around Naomi as three men struggle to win her heart and a fourth quietly tries to ensure her safety. Her love interests include the arrogant, cocky and good-looking Kane D’Argent who heads up, Airgeadsfear a secretive company buying up properties in town; his brother and her neighbour, the brusque and grumpy Jace; the flirty, smart and supportive Darryl; as well as calm, reticent local restaurant owner and cook, Orville. The question is whether or not she will find love with any of them.
I enjoyed “On My Way” as magic begins to spark within Naomi while love and danger circle around her. I look forward to reading the third book hoping that questions will be answered and her future will finally be revealed.
Naomi Rousseau and family and friends are starting to settle in at the cabin in Cambden. She has opened her store in town but her circumstances are getting weirder every day.
Take for instance the cabin, Naomi's grandmother's house, which keeps revealing rooms, closets and even a garage and a car just when they are needed.
Naomi has moved to the upstairs bedroom to give the one on the main floor to her daughter, Winnie. She misses the glow in the dark stars on the ceiling so she buys flourescent paint and find her ceiling and walls covered in carved sigils.
Meanwhile, the attacks keep coming from mysterious sources. Could it be Jace, her taciturn nextdoor neighbor? Or his obnoxious brother, Nate? Or her ex-husband Martin, who has escaped from jail?
Between the tales told by her best friend Tricia and her partner, Marjorie and the actions of the house itself, Naomi is starting to believe in her magical lineage.
And then something devastating happens, and the fate of the Rousseau family is left hanging. Once more, you'll have to wait until the third book in the series to find out what happens.
The first 17 chapters had me groaning like come on really no one can be this stupid like seriously. But I kept pushing through the book and actually enjoyed it.
Thoroughly enjoyed this, a great follow on from Half Way There. Eve writes women of a certain age quite realistically, though there are some bits I'd rather not be reminded of :)
This was in ok story in the overall Midlife Mulligan picture.
WHY does every author that takes on this 'midlife' niche have to portray the main female character as overweight, lacking self esteem and having failing body parts (this character pees herself repeatedly). Create a character that is older but kicks ass! Come on ladies!
What I didn't like about this story:
1) Naomi's continual denial to magic. The house 'provides' yet she chalks it up to a faulty memory. Weird crap happens all around her, but it's a rat or explainable in her head. She has three books left to her by the house or her grandmother yet she barely tries to understand them. Try a spell...what's it going to hurt. 2) Lack of forward progress. Nothing happens in this story except she opens her shop and kills some evil. There is no other character expansion to explain who/what, etc.. Why do all the men dislike each other, etc...? 3) Lack of explanations (which could be under lack of forward progress). Everyone keeps telling her to leave and when she presses for answers the answers are riddles, not answers. My goodness, give us something to make this story interesting.
Naturally, I'll finish the series but this middle book disappointed.
This book was hard to finish. I've never read a more willfully ignorant character. It took all of book one and 70% of book two before Naomi finally admits there is magic regardless of the countless magical scenarios that happen. There isn't much character development for any of the characters so we don't really learn anything new about them. And what was up with the contridictions? Example: Daughter thinks mother should have called the police. Mother says no. *turns page* Mother finally agrees she should have called police. Daughter says with a "nasty inflection", "Yes let's put our faith into the same people who lost dad." Umm what? My neck hurts from the whiplash.
I loved Book 1 but Book 2 definitely fell short. Naomi was so annoying & insecure as if Book 1 didn’t exist or her character went backwards instead of continuing to grow. Her denial of her magic was equally frustrating. She almost reminded me of a sheltered whiny teen instead of a grown woman at times. The last third of the book was better but left me with even more questions than book 1- feels like it’s taking too long for things to come together. Not really interested at this point in the next book.
Book two was certainly the hook for me. Halfway There has a whole lot of world and life building in it so there isn’t as much adventure and the plot isn’t as apparent as I thought they should be. This is very different from her other series because usually each book in the series is about another couple with a smattering of people from the previous books thrown in so you get a little more and a little more of the world each time. This one however is about Naomi all the way through so the setup is much bigger in the first book. It’s not a bad thing, but it makes it a little slow to get into. About 1/3 of the way through On My Way, you’ll be invested and hooked. Sadly we have to wait until next year for the final installment. But hey, if you like Eve like I do, she has a lot coming out between now and then.
On My Way finds Naomi still working to find her groove and the whole town helping her do it. Yes, bad things are still happening, but she’s starting to find her world is much larger than she first imagined and by the end she has fireballs coming out of her hands. So pretty much it’s a super big win. She also starts to find the courage inside herself to forget what is behind her and strive for something she’s never really had…true happiness with great friends and family and maybe a love interest. When big things start to happen around her lakehouse she gets help from very unexpected sources. The mystery is still not solved, but really it is a three book series. Again, it’s more self discovery than romance but I think the romance is waiting to be fully awakened in book three. Sadly we have to wait for it to arrive in 2021.
Honestly with the way 2020 has gone, this series couldn’t have come at a better time. Almost as if she wrote some of the 2020 script while writing this one. I mean we all seem to be on a trail of self discovery after some very horrible things have happened to us or around us, and this is just the work from home syndrome, not the rest of the storm we’ve been staring down the eye of for, oh, seven months. Hopefully the wrap up of this tale will bring a wrap up of this horrible year.
Although I wasn’t sure after book one I’m still giving this series a 5 of 5 so far even with the cliffhanger. You all know it must be good for me to give it that score with a cliffhanger. Buy them now, binge read or listen, let me know what you think!!
A Thrilling Mystery With A Dash of The Unexplained
I've really enjoyed the Midlife Mulligan books so far. I found them both very easy to read and like the premise. The plot in both books have had enough mystery to keep my Miss Marple tendencies happy. Not everything mysterious is supernatural.
Nicole Poole is a fabulous narrator. I love the pace she reads the book and her skill at drawing out the appropriate emotions for each scene. Nicole has a good variety of voices and accents that she can apply for the different characters. I was never confused who was speaking during scenes with conversations between any number of characters.
I love the concept of the Paranormal Women's Fiction genre. All the female protagonists are over 40yrs old. Woohoo! At last. That's not to say younger women won't enjoy it or connect to her. After all, being single again after a long term relationship ends is tricky for all of us. As is recovering from a toxic relationship and finding yourself again. However, as a menopausal woman within spitting distance of the big 5-0, I loved how true-to-life Naomi's issues were.
I could connect with our protagonist, Naomi, and felt her situation to my core. Although she didn't start off as a traditional badass heroine, On My Way has seen her grow in confidence. I have a feeling that she'll end up being a great badass by the end and exhibit all the traits I love. At times, Naomi's thoughts, stubbornness and actions frustrate me. However, have learned that these traits are very common in women who've been in long term situations like Naomi's.
On My Way is a well balanced story. There's some dry humour, lots of mysteries, a thriller feel as well as relationship threads woven throughout. The story is primarily a second-chance women's fiction with the hint of the supernatural.
On My Way doesn't end on a perilous life-or-death cliffhanger (woo!hoo!). However, there is a teasing interlude and epilogue that dangle a tantalising hook to keep you reading the series. I can't wait to listen to the next one.
Second in a series. MC is divorced, her husband is in jail for trying to murder her, her daughter has moved in with her and her son won’t talk to her. She finally realises/admits her cottage in the woods is magical as it produces things she needs, a car and a garage for it for a start. Her husband has escaped jail and is in the wind. Her daughter is dating someone in his 40s that the cat won’t allow in the house and some keeps vandalising her new antique store. The MC doesn’t seem to want to admit to what she sees in front of her eyes and equates polite with nice. She has made friends in her new town but not many as her neighbours keep thinking she is a witch even though she has told them she isn’t. A rather rambling story with a hanging ending. I hope there is only one more in this series and then they combined into the one book they probably should be as there isn’t really a beginning. Middle or end in this episode.
We pick up Naomi's life at her grandmothers house. The house that seems to clean itself and gives her anything she needs. When her car is smashed by a falling tree then the next morning the shed turns into a garage with a car in it. She decides to sell antiques and the house gives her old furniture to sell. That and her friend Daryl he is working up to asking her out. He seems to get himself invited to the parties at her house even though they are girls night out. Her store is vandalized twice before she even gets it opened. The vandalism seems to stop when they find her ex-husband, who escaped from prison dead from exposure. But still there is some force trying to scare her off. Could it be her neighbor Jace or his brother Kane? Naomi is still trying to deny she is a witch.
In this second book, Naomi is coming to terms with a magic house that offers up whatever it senses she needs plus being friends with her daughter, now she finally divorced her abusive ex husband who is on the run from the police. Unfortunately though her luck has gone South with accidents happening nearly killing her screw times and though she likes Daryl, its him and also Kane pursuing her. Never mind hot neighbour Jace. There's lots going on in this second book and amidst the chemistry for the men in her life, her powers are starting to appear and her confidence as a woman starts to recover somewhat. I can't wait til book three is out and we know who is really out to get her and why.
This is the worst paranormal women’s fiction series I’ve read and I’m angry I started the second book. This series has a TSTL lead character that I was actually hoping would get knocked off. Naomi, the whiny, doormat of a loser who complains constantly about how old and ugly and fat she is, even though she seems to have the town men drooling over her and she refuses to believe what she sees and what she’s learned about the paranormal and it’s dragging on for 2 whole books and I am done. If she had just embraced her legacy in the beginning of the second book, it would have been salvageable, but it is unbearable to have to watch a weak pathetic main character bumble about aimlessly.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Naomi has to be the dumbest, most horribly in denial woman ever. How many times does someone have to try and kill you, before you start believing someone is trying to kill you?
Also her constant complaining about how fat she is, and she can’t eat carbs, because carbs are the devil apparently. I think it’s meant to come off amusing, but I feel bad for her that she believes that she can never have bread again if she wants to be thin and happy. It got old fast.
Two full books of her brushing everything off and getting zero answers of any sort. And unfortunately I need to read the last one so I can see if she gets herself killed or not.
My all-time favorite house in this series. If only I had a magic house that could clean itself. And even make adjustments when I needed more room. I don't know why someone didn't think of it before. It's brilliant for a magical series! There are so many suspects in this book. Which guy is trying to kill her & why? And why won't anyone help teach her magic? What is the mud really for? She's starting to put some of the pieces together by the end, but far from the whole story!
I do love the characters. The heroine is about 40, divorced, with 2 children. She inherited her grandmother's house, a woman known to be a witch in the local community. But this was all set forth in book 1 of the series. This book is hard to recap because until the end it is just a series of mysterious events, most of which seem to stem from supernatural causes. The important outcome is Naomi now seems to accept magic and witchcraft after having to use it to save herself. And there are a few pages at the end of the book hunting at the direction the story will go. I am very disappointed that Naomi has not saved Maddy, the lake creature held in bondage and forced to dig mud up from the bottom of the lake. The mud is supposed to be magical.
This was nonstop action, danger and excitement . Naomi comes a long way in this book and is learning to stand on her own and to trust herself. I love that she and Winnie are getting closer and developing a solid relationship. There is so much going on that I’m still not sure exactly who is the bad guy here...kinda hoping it’s not Kane lol...guess we will find out in the next book! I can’t wait to see what happens next with Naomi,Winnie,Trish and Marjorie and of course the house.
I really liked the progress that Naomi made in book 2. Her denial game is strong! 😆 my most favorite thing about this book, other than the magical kick a$$ house that almost steals the show, is Naomi’s inner dialog. What’s in our heads, it isn’t always pretty, sometimes it’s awkward, self deprecating, hilarious, inappropriate, gross or all of those in one thought! Her thoughts felt so authentic for me and I connected with her. The men surrounding her are keeping me guessing. What are their motives? Is anyone being genuine in their affection? Or are they all out for their own gain? I’m dying to have all of the secrets revealed and see how it all ends!
I’m literally shocked; I read this book in two days. It was the perfect companion to the first book. In the second installment we get to know Naomis daughter, we get to develop deeper into Naomis love life, Naomi finally opens her own business; but most importantly Naomi is starting to accept the magic. Maybe Orcs are real, maybe Hell Hounds are after her, but one thing is true her life is no longer at a dead end. We also start to see more of Kane and less of Jace; the mysterious brothers. I’m very excited to starts the third book, good thing it’s already in my library!
OK I liked the book but the main character is a little dense and to tell the truth if she would talk less about her eating habits that would be great! Also, all the talk about plastic surgery was getting me upset. That being said It does leave you having to d the 3ed book and I will I gave the first one 4 stars this would have also gotten if not for all the fat-shaming more story less diet advice, please.
I typically like Eve’s works, but this series is annoying. How do you get to the second book and still not know what’s going on? The main character Naomi irks my whole soul! She denies anything people tell her though has proof that some of what has been said is true. She consistently puts herself down. Throughout the book there is no real idea of what is going on. Why does the reader have be just as stupid as she is? This one is a big NO!
So, I didn’t start with book one and dove into book two, but, that didn’t have me confused at all. Enough was explained that I knew exactly what was going on, and, I didn’t even realize there was a book before this one until I had finished it. Lots of intrigue, weird happenings, and absolute confusion on who is good, bad, or how far on the shades of grey scale they are, and I loved every second. Definitely diving into book three ASAP 😊
I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title within the series set box (Audible Membership) Opening a shop in her old childhood township could be a daunting task, but the added attempts of intimidation made her inner feelings of distrust and inadequacy heighten. However, her newfound ability also gave her a new sense of self-worth and the ability to straighten her shoulders and face whatever the world threw at her.
Wonderful second book now I want the third please.
Absolutely love this series full of great characters. I really don’t want to wait for next year for the next to come out ( yes I have preordered it). There are still so many questions to be answered. The book draws you in and I finished it in two day, only took so long due to work but again great story.
