Out of the Darkness

Rate this book
“It's hard enough with two people. Throwing a third into the mix is… I don't know, doesn't it seem like we're asking for trouble?”

It hasn't been easy, but horse trainer Dan Wheeler is beginning to build a new life for himself, finding his place in California with his lovers Evan Kaminski and Jeff Stevens. When things are going well, it's spectacular: there's affection, humor, and passion. But things don't seem to go well all that often.

Dan continues to struggle with the loss of his previous lover and sometimes doubts that he even deserves to be happy; Evan is jealous of every rival for Dan's attention—including Jeff; and Jeff worries that he's too old for the younger men and wonders if he should bow out completely. Despite his resolutions, Dan has grown attached to the other two men, but he's not sure that's enough. He knows that it hurts to be together—he needs to decide whether it would hurt even more to be apart.

"Nah. It's art. It's not about intelligence--although if it was, you'd have no problem, Dan--but it's more just about impressions, or feelings. Just look at them and let your mind go, see where it takes you."
"So, art's kind of like an acid trip?"
"Good art is." Jeff's voice is warm and rumbling, and Dan really wants to haul his ass into the truck and drive them somewhere private. They have got to get the rules worked out.(…)

Loved it!

Out of the Darkness picks up right where Dark Horse left off. The prologue is testament to the fact how hard it is for Dan to deal with the loss of his former partner and lover Justin. has a huge impact on Dan and he just crumbles and has to go through another meltdown. Jeff, however, is the tower of strength who offers him much needed comfort and sympathy.

All three men are trying to make their nontraditional relationship work. While Dan and Jeff get along very well, there seems to be a certain tension between Evan and Dan. And to make matters worse, a former friend ‘sneaks’ back into Dan’s life and asks for help. Evan’s jealousy and possessiveness are flaring up again and Dan is tired of being on the defense. He feels betrayed because he would never cheat on them and he wants them to trust him. Dan is not a big talker but they seem to ‘communicate’ very well on a physical level—the sex is great after all. Then again, sex is not the right device to solve any problem. That’s the reason Jeff thinks they should slow down on the sex and talk much more because they use sex to push their problems away. Out of the Darkness is another prime example why it is so imperative that traditional as well as nontraditional couples should communicate openly, regularly, and early. Also, it’s very clear that without honesty and trust a relationship just withers away.

"He said you think too much, and we need to help you turn your brain off." The kiss is a bit deeper, a bit wetter, and Dan can taste himself in Evan's mouth and remembers that Evan hasn't gotten off yet. "He said sex is always good for that."

Jeff's frowning at him in confusion. "I don't get it, man. How can you be so comfortable, so…confident when we're actually going at it, and then turn into…this…as soon as we're done?"

 photo tumblr_me00tsI41q1rwiv0vo1_500_zps1611c52b.gif

"Maybe if I stopped sleeping with women…and, holy shit, that's what I'm gonna be doing, right? If it's just you and me and Jeff?" He shakes his head. "That will make me quite a bit more gay!"
Dan can't let that go, either? "Okay, we need to talk about that. I mean--if you guys want a threesome, and you like sleeping with women..wouldn't it make more sense for you to find a female third?"
Evan stares at him. "Now, you see, this is what I find fascinating about you. One second you're running away, the next you're offering to get a sex change, just for my pussy-loving pleasure? It's sweet, man, but maybe you could find a middle road of moderation?"
"Okay, psycho, you can't just make a joke out of everything I say. It's a good question!"

"The Operational Paramters…? Evan, are you playing soldier? First you've got your club house, and now you're going on missions--aren't you a bit young for a second childhood?"
Evan just grins at him. "Up and at 'em, recruit!"

 photo tumblr_m9hal3UOiI1qegk2ao1_500_zps61c18a00.gif

"Mommy said you were a horse trainer, and then Daddy said it looked like you were the one who got rode hard last night."
It takes Dan's brain a bit to process that, and by the time he's done his smile seems frozen on his face. Brian doesn't seem to notice, though. "If you're not a horse, what does that mean?"

"(…)Or I guess you could have one of the bedrooms at the guest house, but it's been designated as ground zero for most of the whoring, so I don't know if you want that."
"You have a designated ground zero? This is some very organized whoring you've got going on."
"The logistics of a threesome are a little insane, my friend."

I totally heart Jeff. He is mature and the calming influence in their relationship. Plus, he is the glue who holds everything together. Both Evan and Dan were looking up to Jeff for guidance and a word of wisdom. Besides, he seemed to have the right answer to every question, and he could solve every problem. Jeff is always so stoic and reserved and comes across as very self-confident. Though behind the armor of confidence, Jeff has to deal with his own insecurities. I liked shy and insecure Jeff when he talked about his art. Also, I did understand his POV when he thought he was too old for Evan and Dan. And it was all right when he talked about bowing out of their arrangement (no spoiler, read the blurb) and letting Dan and Evan have a more “normal” relationship. No worries though, he didn’t do it. Although I really think it was good to address the issue because you can’t just live for the day. Instead of kicking something down the road it’s always the better option to get it off your chest. So, while I really enjoyed to learn a bit more about Jeff, I still wanted more insight into Evan and Jeff’s life as a couple. What are their problems? How did they meet? I know I will have to read the novellas to hopefully get my answers.

It goes without saying that I’m psyched I got more moments that involved Jeff and Dan. Only Jeff and Dan for that matter. Therefore I’ve had enough page time to enjoy and develop my little Jeff crush. Let me tell you Jeff and Dan getting off in the stable while Evan was listening on the phone was hot! Jeff cuddling with Dan at Jeff’s? Sweet. Jeff painting Dan? Insightful and sensitive. Jeff ? I could feel the love.

What I didn’t like
Once again the author used the term ‘man’ quite generously. But to top everything off she added ‘dude’ to the mix.
Dude, it was tedious. Got it, man?

 photo tumblr_m3a3ys5EVC1qlxw6ro1_r1_500_zps84c7109c.gif

"I like your voice. I like the way you look at me sometimes, like there's a secret or something, like only you and me understand what's really going on."

Dan just shakes his head. "And you think Evan is immature…"
"Honey, at my age, being called 'mature' is no longer a compliment." (I adore Jeff’s mom Anna!)

"I'm not a sensitive flower, asshole."
"Ooh, you said a naughty word! I take it back, you're not a sensitive flower at all."
"Fuck you."
"Oh, my ears! You brute!"
"Sweet Jesus…"
"Blasphemy! To what depths will you sink?"

I even appreciated Evan although I’d love to give him some pointers. Rein in your jealousy!
 photo tumblr_mfg5glCbHS1r5g67po1_500_zps19734643.gif

When Dan and Evan want to lift the sex embargo they can be quite entertaining…

Jeff looks from one to the other. “So I’ve got the business argument and the animal training argument—but what about my sensitive artist’s soul?”
Dan barely needs to think about that one. “Be a rebellious artist instead. Be all about the pleasure of the flesh, or whatever…what’s that word, man? Starts with an H, maybe?” Dan looks to Evan for backup.
“Hedonism.” Evan nods enthusiastically. “Be a hedonistic artist, Jeff. Revel in the beauty of the human form.”(…)

The story is written in first person present tense from Dan’s POV. I really liked Dan very much and the way the story was written allowed me to get into his head. Hot headed Dan, confident Dan, gentle Dan, hilarious Dan, insecure and cautious Dan. It’s all there and quite revealing. Between the sheets he is clearly a man of action and he acts confidently. He just knows what he wants. But after the deed is done he retreats into his shell and he is once again quite taciturn and wary.

All in all Out of the Darkness is a very engagingly and beautifully written sequel to Dark Horse. Intense and difficult moments were perfectly balanced with some light and funny interludes. Loved the banter and tenderness. The steam level was really good, however, I’m glad the author provided so much more plot than smexy times. In any event I think she did a great job at developing their halting relationship and I was immersed in the story and characters at all times. It wasn’t just sunshine and roses but it was certainly believable. Hence, this book was a true pleasure to read.

„Dan, I wanted to…I wanted to thank you again for that painting. It’s…when we first got it, neither one of us was sure, but I’ve looked at it a lot. I understand now why you wanted us to have it. It’s beautiful, Dan. It’s…some people go through lives like beat-up plow horses, and others…others burn through the jumps, don’t they? They inspire all of us.”
Dan swallows hard, and takes a moment before he answers.
„He really inspired me, sir. I mean it.” Another deep breath, but he wants to continue. “Anything I do, anything worthwhile, ever—it’s because of him.”

Dan is afraid that his love for Justin might fade and that he might forget how he felt about him but that’s not possible. Even though Justin is gone the love is still there but at the same time the pain is fading away. And while Dan knows that Justin is irreplaceable, life goes on and love happens despite past tragedies. Dan knows he can have something beautiful and valuable again. After all, he deserves to be loved and he can love someone back. All he needed to do was fight for it and make it happen.

“I want this. Us.”

Recommended to readers who would like to give an m-m-m love triangle a try that provides way more depth than smut.

Let me just start by saying that before starting this book I had doubts that it could be as good as the first book in this series, I'm very happy to say I wrong...very wrong...this book was even BETTER than the first!!!!!

So did I love it.......

Yes I DID!!!!!!!!!

In this book Dan is settled in California and trying to battle his past and trying to figure out how and where he fits in, with this love triangle. Evan and Jeff are trying to be patient with him and help him through all this but tempers flare up very often.

“Dude, a big emotional talk and then hot sex…. The first one is Jeff’s perfect night, the second one is mine. Put them together, and we’re both happy as damn clams. We absolutely want you there. Jeff was the one who suggested it.”

There are many issues that arise through out the book...jealousy, old boyfriends and emotional scars. However in Dan's defense he is coming in to an already established relationship so a lot of his insecurities are normal reactions that I think most people would have. Which is another reason I love this series because it's real feelings and emotions, there's no insta-love here....it's real and true.

“Well, fuck, man, what do you want me to say? Nothing’s changed. When I’m with you guys everything’s great, but sooner or later I have to go back to reality, and… things aren’t so good there.”

It's funny too...you go from sad to laughing quickly. Evan is hilarious and at times over bearing but I love him!!!! Although I will say this book is NO where near as sad as the first book.

“Little Women? Are you shitting me? I can’t think of a way you could be any more gay.”
“Maybe if I stopped sleeping with women… and, holy shit, that’s what I’m gonna be doing, right? If it’s just you and me and Jeff?” He shakes his head. “That will make me quite a bit more gay!”

Also the sex, WOW, it's HOT!!!! Dan may have insecurities in the relationship but he has NO problem between the sheets.....he's very "take charge" in that department!

"Evan breaks into his thoughts with a giggle, and then turns to Dan. “Seriously, Dan, do you ever bottom? ’Cause you are the toppiest son-of-a-bitch…..” Jeff laughs..."

My Thoughts

I love loved loved this book and these characters!!!!! They have moved up my list and are now beside Ty and Zane for my favorite m/m series!!!!! There's not much more I say about it because you would just have to read it to understand......in a word fabulous!!!!! Or maybe addicted because I can't get enough of them!!!! Now I'm off to start another one in this series!!!

Ok, one of the things I love most about this series, is the same thing that frustrates me. I have read a lot ( and I do mean a lot) of ménage stories, you could even say, I have a thing for them. This series really does go into the difficulties of having three people in a relationship. They all have issues, quirks and problems. They have fallen into roles in the relationship.
Evan and Dan have the most trouble, with each other and I think with themselves. And that's what I mean, I like that it isn't easy, I like that it's hard work, takes an effort and is frustrating and for every step forward it sometimes feels like it's two steps back. But that's also what was hard about these books, I just wanted them to finally 'get it'. But although each story brings them closer, they aren't anywhere near where they need to be yet.
I don't mind Evan's jealousy so much, it's more his controlling nature and his 'punishing' the others when he doesn't get his way. He is generous to a fault, but it feels like you can't really trust his generosity. ( more about that later in my review of Of Dark and Bright).
Jeff, the peacemaker and the 'adult', Dan, is like a skittish horse, he wants to trust what he has with Evan and Jeff, but things happen that make him feel left out or an add on. He doesn't feel trusted and he has trouble trusting, but he knows, deep down that this is good, that this is what he wants.
Chris is as usual a nice comic relief and a bit of calm in the storm, which is Dan.
I would have loved to end this book feeling a bit more secure about there relationship. I don't doubt their love, but they do have a lot of disharmony and upset going on and at times I agree with Dan..is this worth it? Is it going to work?

Oh and I have to add, for fans of horses and riding, this is a great series. It's definitely a major part of all the books.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5!

I have been looking forward to reading Out of the darkness for quite a while now. If I’m honest, I actually wanted to read it the moment I finished Dark Horse and the three short stories illustrating what happened in Dan, Evan and Jeff’s past. However, the more I fell in love with a story and its characters, the more afraid I am that the sequel might turn out to be a disappointment.

Luckily, this wasn’t the case for Out of the Darkness. It definitely wasn’t an easy read, but it felt incredibly real. Dan’s past, Evan’s jealously and Jeff’s self-consciousness are causing a number of ups and downs in their relationship and they really had to work on themselves to overcome their problems. Making a threesome work isn’t easy and – just like the characters themselves – I sometimes wasn’t sure if their relationship would ever work out and if all the effort would be worth it.

But I kept hoping and I really wanted all three of them to be happy. And sometimes hope is all that is needed.

I also enjoyed reading about all the secondary characters – they make the setting perfect and I can’t wait to get to know them better in the next book. Especially, Chris is very interesting – I’m always looking forward to his conversations with Dan and his advice. Everybody needs a best friend like Chris.

I can only recommend this series to everybody looking for a credible and deep m/m/m relationship!

More trials and tribulations in the blossoming ménage of Dan, Evan and Jeff. 4.5 stars and

Will Evan ever trust Dan and stop jumping to conclusions?? Will Dan ever feel secure and comfortable enough in this new relationship to let the other two guys in and tell them what he's thinking instead of letting them figure it out for themselves?? Will Jeff ever be able to accept that the only place Evan and Dan don't rub each other up the wrong way is in bed?? These and many more questions will hopefully be answered as the series carries on.

Oh. My. God. I'm really feeling bad that I'm only rating this 3.5 stars, but come on!

This turned out to be EXACTLY the kind of jealousy fest I was afraid of when I went into this series.

Yes, the sex was great. I'll give them that.

Yes, I still like all three of them very much.

Dan with his troubled history and "working class dignity" that he defends in front of Evan.
Evan, the super rich family man and passionate as well as playful lover with a pretty possessive streak (I wonder how Evan and Jeff ever maintained an open relationship, if Evan starts sharpening his knives that easily whenever a handsome guy is somewhere around)
And Jeff, the super laid back guy who is definitely my favorite of the three, even though he kinda fades into the background in that relationship, because he isn't as 'loud' as Evan or as 'spirited' as Dan. Still, he's the glue that keeps those guys together, that's for sure. And I wish he'll get a bit more to say in book 3.

In any case, the main conflict of this story was: Jealousy. No doubt about that.

Sure, Evan and Dan are very different characters, so it's clear that they don't get along naturally. Their views of life are very very different, as Dan comes from a very poor background whereas Evan is a billionaire who is successfully running his family's business.

If these two got along without conflicts, it wouldn't be believable at all.

But Dan's natural wish to have friendships outside of their relationship has become such a huge obstacle in their relationship (at least from Evan's POV) that they end up quarreling and discussing instead of loving each other most of the time. Even Jeff was exasperated with his guys at some point and it seemed they would actually give up. God knows, I would have given up long ago in their place.

Of course, sexually-wise they're quite a great couple/group(?). I mean, wow!

When they made the decision to stop the sex to develop their actual relationship I was actually disappointed that they would stop the only thing that really worked for them.

Towards the end, I was pretty impressed with the conflict between Dan and Evan. Funny thing was, I agreed with both of them. It was a damn realistic conflict.

Too bad it took an injury (as it so often does) to get over their anger and work things out.

I was actually surprised by how harmonic the ending was given that the whole book was a hellish ride of jealousy, distrust, possessiveness and social differences. I mean, even Jeff fell into that trap towards the end...

And I do think that Taylor was a pretty interesting side character with a very awful obstacle to overcome. He should get his own story, IMO. Too bad he created LOTS of friction between Dan and Evan...

Anyway, wow, on to book three. And I swear that one should be titled "The One with the 'I Love You's" or "The One Where Dan Bottoms" or else I'll be one unhappy reader.

3.5 stars!

I am sorry... but my GOD, this book is BORING! I wonder if it's because I read this book now, after being exposed to almost a decade with MM romance. Maybe if I read it back then, in my early MM-reading years, I will find it wonderful. But alas, since it's present time, all I can say is that long book feels long because NOTHING REALLY HAPPENS!

For 350+ pages, these guys basically chasing each other's tails. Dan acting like teenager who runs away when he has problems. Evan still acts like puppy who wants to keep the bone to himself. Jeff, well, Jeff pretty much plays the big bear nurse who everyone runs to when they want to someone to soothe them emotionally, doesn't he?

I'm skimming the book just so I can get to the finish line. And nope, I'm not planning to read the rest of the books either. This is where I stop.

On a plus note, I LOVE Jeff's mom (she rocks) and Chris (both Puppet-Chris and real Chris). They help making this book bearable somewhat.

I'm feeling so good reading this series! I'm loving the menage and it is interesting to see how Dan, Evan and Jeff are trying to make the relationship work! And it's working... with some arguments, jealously... but they are actually so good together!

And the horses... love them!

I really like these guys, but sometimes I feel like I'm watching a dog chase its tail. Finally towards the end they are making some headway and in the epilogue it seems like they have a fighting chance of making all this work.

Evan needs to work on not acting on every jealous impulse, Dan needs to work on talking to the others and Jeff needs a very nice reward for dealing with these two. These guys have so much chemistry and really are fun to listen to once they get going. I am hoping to see a lot more of the three of them together in the next book.

I enjoyed all the secondary characters, especially when Evan's friends brought Dan out of his self-pitying shell. Chris is also a welcome visitor in this one and could add another interesting dynamic going forward.

Looking forward to seeing this all work out for a HEA in the next book.

“The best ones are rarely the easy ones, are they?”

giphy-47

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ You're telling me! 😭 That's an understatement if there ever was one, and it goes to show what Dan had to go through just to get Out of the Darkness of his heart and mind, and into the beckoning light for him to realize or even accept what Jeff and Evan were offering him - it was a pretty intense and complicated mess that for a guy who pretty much doesn't like mess and envies those who can simply roll with whatever comes their way - he doesn't seem to have that gift - and lives for the simple quiet life, it was a lot to get his mind around. 🤨

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Sometimes I did feel like the author was deliberately sabotaging their dynamic by offering more complex doubts and uncertain insecurities that wavered their resolve. It became more frustrating and more difficult for me to even discern who I should side with? 🤔 Who really is right and coming out on top or is Dan being too unfair or Evan being too trusting or simply Jeff's laid back shyness becoming annoying rather than helpful?

“... Despite his best intentions, he’s grown to really care about both of these men, and he doesn’t like to think of his life without them in it.”

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ But, the saner part of me rationalizes that what I feel as deliberate, is actually more so the author showing that not everything can be peaches and rainbows right from the start. 🥺 Considering Dan's heartbreak with Justin, Evan and Jeff's already much-established relationship, there's just too much on the table for it to be an easy-picking ride. 'He doesn’t so much feel jealous as he feels… defeated.' And for that reason, I bore through the troubles and the trials and the jealousy, as well as the embargo on sex to see that slow build up of trust and hesitant commitment develop between the three. 🤜🏻🤛🏻

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Granted, I was a bit sad and miffed on Evan's part that he and Dan's sexy times were a lot less compared to how easy Dan finds himself exchanging kisses and seeking out comfort with Jeff - gentle but passionate, warm and then hot. 🥰 But, it was nice to see Dan get more comfortable with them and see how much of a drama queen he was; it's exhausting being in his head. Because for each time he points out that he is behaving in the wrong, there is that inner PuppetChris and himself arguing that he may be right to ask and want his own freedom of choice. And for that, I can't really blame him! 😭 Better to address these points now before it really does become something serious and the pain will hurt with the heartache. 😢

“He said you think too much, and we need to help you turn your brain off.”

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ I still can't seem to warm up to Jeff! Don't get me wrong, he's a good guy, a little world-weary but still kind and gentle, but maybe I just feel that he prefers him over strong and enthusiastic Evan - which in turn, makes me feel bad for Evan; which is wrong, considering how out of place he behaves at times with his unwarranted jealousy, but I feel like he's getting the short end of the stick, even though it's really his money and his workplace that ties them altogether. 🫨 I could not even enjoy that sexy model/paint job between Jeff and Dan, because it felt like Dan wanted Jeff all to himself, and Jeff wasn't complaining! But, then, argh, it did bother me how Evan even offered Chris a job, almost as if he's collecting the things close to Dan, simply to keep him close. Possessive much??? 😆

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Not to say that Dan's entirely innocent either, in my books. 🙄 But, his arguments of reason are valid, even though I wish people would stop treating him with kid gloves and that we would get a little glimpse of him being even the slightest apologetic of how he does come across as someone who just always believes himself to be in the right. I guess the only times where there was any peace of mind *literally* was when Dan was with the horses, but even then, the barn was not safe for their shenanigans - or the horse's innocence, for that matter. 😏❤️‍🔥

“But it’s not just luck, Danny. You’re good too, you know? You deserve them—all of them.”

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ A special shout-out to Chris and Dan's friendship, the saving grace of sanity in this convoluted mess, a voice of reason from his past that anchors him home. 🫂 It feels like I'm ranting more than appreciating, but in a way, the author has done a successful job in carrying a very real feel to it that makes it difficult for me to dismiss the realism of their unique situation. How they each learn to communicate and own up to their faults and mistakes and prove that they are taking it seriously enough to make the effort to make it work. 🫶🏻

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ I mean, with all the drama and doubt that comes with their crazy lives of living in a soap opera, with millionaires and threesomes and glamour, the thing I do appreciate is growth. 👍🏻👍🏻 Character growth that each of them showed in their own unique ways, ones which came about due to the events that transpired. Understanding and admitting the wrong of being too impatient, while also learning to accept with gratitude the kindness and affection given and not taking it for granted. That acknowledgement is perhaps the best pay-off that made the whole struggle worth it. 💪🏻

Four stars and a commitment to this series. Out of the Darkness is the 2nd installment of the Dark Horse series and it's better than the first.

The story picks up immediately after Dark Horse and follows Jeff, Dan and Evan in the early days of their committed ménage relationship. This story addresses the mechanics of establishing their ménage relationship: what's allowed, what's not, what about twosomes, and basically how to establish comfort and trust. Much like any budding relationship, there are pitfalls and awkwardness that go along with getting to know each other. But it is not all seriousness, there is as much bromance as there is romance which makes it fun. While not chock full of sex scenes, there are enough fun times among the boys to scratch that itch. I might add that Ms. Sherwood does an excellent job of creating chemistry between Dan, Evan and Jeff.

In my review of Dark Horse, I likened it to a rom-com. Out of the Darkness is more rom-com fare, and I mean that in the best way. It's the funny, easy feel-good feelings that keep you reading. The banter among the characters, along with Dan's inner dialog, is clever and well written. Also, while Dark Horse was a tad bit long (the 2 hour 15 minute rom-com), Out of the Darkness moved at the perfect pace as was just the right length (the 90 minute movie).

Thoughts & worries about next book. The tension and conflict in Out of the Darkness almost all came from within the Dan/Jeff/Evan group. Close friends and family have all be positive and supportive about the threesome. Almost surprisingly so. My prediction is that the next installment will address the challenges brought on from external sources and the prejudice they will no doubt face as they become a more established relationship group.

The thing I really love about this series is that nothing just magically works out. The things that would most likely happen in real life, happen in this book.

Dan is still having a hard time trying to adjust to his new life in California. Not only is he trying to come to terms with losing Justin, but he's trying to feel his way through his new relationship with Evan and Jeff.

I really enjoy the dynamic between Dan/Jeff/Evan. Although Jeff and Evan have an open relationship, this type of relationship is new to them as well so it's a struggle for all three of them. Jealousy, insecurity...you name it, it's happening.

I really love Chris and his relationship with Dan. I think the conversations and phone calls between these two are awesome! I mean damn, I want to call Chris for advice because he's pretty darn great at giving it. Lastly, the conversation between these two in the Epilogue was great. I absolutely loved what Chris told Dan, and I think Dan really needed to hear it.

I've really enjoyed reading this series and am looking forward to the next book :)

This book deserves a lot more justice than it's going to get from this late review.

Really enjoyed this overall but there were definitely some more... annoying? bits. Like Evan's "friends" that were visiting. Dan's reaction to Blaine wasn't great either but at least he did try to understand the guy. Just his "I-don't-give-a-shit with a side of go-fuck-yourself" attitude got really old, really quick. It is spread throughout the book with Dan mostly trying to convince himself of said attitude... Along with the whole "annoying friends" bit... I don't remember the name of the other friend but the chat they have is so cringey and I'm glad that Dan relays it in such a way since it's totally deserved.
He steps away from the bar. "Evan's fine. He loves his sister, and he likes his life. If this little speech was about to build up to some warning about how you don't want to see him get hurt again, you can save your breath. I'm not trying to hurt him, but he's a grown-ass man, and he can take care of himself, and he doesn't need a bunch of people wailing and crying about how he's less than he used to be." Dan leans in a little closer. "Maybe you need to consider the possibility that he's more than he used to be." He steps back again. "Now if the lady wants an escort back to the gallery, she'd better knock back her damn drink, 'cause I'm heading out."

It was also annoying for a while there when Dan and Evan kept being all like "we really need to chat with Jeff and get the rules all straightened out." And then how Dan does the same with Jeff. It's like, yes, the "rules" do need to be spoken about especially if you're questioning them and especially if you're questioning them that much. But mostly not even be a rule, just general understanding. I loved how Dan dealt with bits like I dunno so I'm just going to be out with it. So refreshing.
He's talking to one partner about sex with the other partner, but he doesn't want to start hiding stuff, so, what the hell, why not be totally open? Better to be straightforwardly awkward than secretly awkward. That can be another one of his mottos.

Speaking of refreshing. Thank you for this wording. For this understanding. For this compromise!
"Hey, Evan?" Evan lifts his eyes in response. "I'm thinking about getting involved in Taylor's barn, helping out somehow. It's interesting, and I think I could be useful, and it sounds like a really good program. So that's what I'm gonna do." He pauses to collect himself, and to make sure his voice comes out as sincerely as he wants it to. "So... what can we do to make that okay for you?"

I disliked how Dan's injury was a cure-all fix to all their problems and everything was more easily solvable after the fact. It's used so often during narrations that it gets old, and is just a cop-out. It was super cute how Evan bought a bunch of things at the airport for Dan, though, and kept just pulling things outta a paper bag for him. However, my point remains. Please! Stop using injuries/near-death experiences as ways to solve major issues. A huge pet peeve of mine. Especially since it made everything wrap up suuper neatly at the end. Which fine. But the way in which it was done... All of that being said, I truly do love a good hurt/comfort going on when someone is injured and has someone take care of them. Was even better with multiple people! xD It was ironic that I ended up finishing this story on actual Thanksgiving (yes, this review has been sitting for that long. D:) when the epilogue/final chapter takes place on said day (American).
"Yeah, well, you've got another couple hours of that before I drag your ass back to the doctor. And as hot as the drawl is under other circumstances, it would be a good sign of your mental competence if you could de-Texas yourself just for now."

I hated that the beginning was in Tat's POV. The rest was only in Dan's which I appreciate. Tat's was just so pointless and annoying. We didn't need it. I'm glad that (since it was included) it was so short and that was all but also made it make even less sense. Buut every now and then the writing didn't make sense anyway style-wise. For example:
Evan heads up to the house to get Tat, and Robyn wanders downstairs and gets invited, and they all go into down for an early dinner. The sun is still warm when they arrive, so they sit on the patio at Zio's, and it's relaxed and friendly and good.

Really liked Robyn and Chris, even if the puppet bit was weird at times, lol. I will definitely pick up the next book, even though it sounds way over the top... Crossing my fingers that things continue on the upwards trend and that their communication continues to grow. Still a lotta "dude, man, etc." and they sound similar at times but... Still a good time.

(3.5 rounded up)

Quotes:
He'd worried, at one time, that the feelings of love might fade, that he might forget how powerfully he'd felt. He finds that he hasn't. He still remembers the love just as clearly, but it's the pain that's fading away, leaving the sweetness without the bitter.

They pull up in front of Evan's place, and he turns around, smiles, and Dan blurts out, "I want this."
[...]
It's Dan's turn to be confused, and then he grins self-consciously and looks over at Jeff, then back at Evan. "No, not... I want
this. Us. I... I want it to work." He nods at Jeff, then at Evan, and shrugs his own shoulders to include himself. "I want this."
Evan just looks at him for a few seconds and then looks at Jeff as if for confirmation. He looks back at Dan. "Yeah, okay." He smiles. "It's yours."

Dan eventually rouses himself enough to go and check on the turkey, and he's not really surprised when Chris follows him in. Chris just stands quietly while Dan does his work, and then he quirks his head to the side. "You doing okay, Danny?"
Dan doesn't really know what to say to that. Okay compared to what? He wrinkles his face up. "Yeah. I guess. I mean, this is a good place. It's... Jeff and Evan..." He hasn't said the words to Chris yet, but he doesn't think it's going to come as much of a shock. "I love them, you know?" Chris smiles softly and nods. "It's not... it's not like Justin. Nothing's ever going to be like Justin. But, you know, Justin wasn't like Jeff and Evan either, right?"
"No, fair enough." Chris's smile is only a little sad. "You've--you've been lucky, finding them. All of them. When you needed them." He smiles again, and it's that "I can't believe I'm about to say this" smile that Dan doesn't see too often. "But it's not just luck, Danny. You're good too, you know? You deserve them--all of them."

Dan sits back and watches them all as he slips a little bit of skin under the table to Lou. His world has always been stormy, and the last few years were absolute typhoons, but he's been blown off course into a surprisingly safe harbor. It's nothing he could have predicted, and he can't help missing what he's lost, but he knows he's still incredibly lucky to have ended up here. He remembers Chris's words, saying that it wasn't just luck, saying that Dan deserved it. So if not lucky... damn. It's sappy as hell, and he'll never say it out loud, but he looks out at the friendly, laughing faces around him, sees Jeff and Evan leaning back and taking their own moments of reflection, and he knows what he is. It's a good day for it, he guesses. He's thankful.

A GREAT SEQUEL!

I'm very relieved that this sequel turned to be a great one. I really really liked it!

This is how the first book should be I think.
I liked the writing. The plot was way way way better for me! It was just right. Balanced mix of humor, romance, and angst. It was really good for me. And no unnecessary plot twists were here thank heavens.

I adore Dan, Evan, and Jeff!!! This time, I can now distinguish their own characteristics and their roles in their relationship.
If I can associate their roles to Chinese elements:
Dan is Steel,
Evan is Fire,
and Jeff is Water & Earth.
Evan brings in the passion, Jeff keeps them cool and grounded, while Dan forges their bond.

Evan, Dan, and Jeff

Their chemistry is hooot! Loved their sex scenes!
The secondaries were great as well! Loved Chris, Tat, and Robyn. For the additions, I loved Anna, but not sure what I'll feel with Taylor, Blaine, Amanda, and Monica.

I'm very glad that I give this series a second chance. I'm looking forward for the next shorts and Book 3!

I think the author has done an incredible job here, showcasing what happens after. After the sex, after the confrontation, after the acceptance, and after their determination to give a ménage relationship a chance. 'Out of the Darkness' is the second installment in Kate Sherwood's series, 'Dark Horse'. This book picks up the story the very next day after Dan, Evan, and Jeff have agreed to try a ménage. I've found being half of a couple very difficult, at times. So I wasn't surprised to see these men struggle with being one-third of a threesome.

"Maybe Dan needs to stop trying to steer and stop worrying about where the river’s taking him. Maybe he’s so tired because he’s fighting against the current."

There are three very distinct personalities at work. Jeff is older, a little wiser, and the calming influence, but he's got his own insecurities, especially in regards to the age difference. Dan is really patient, and Zen-like…with horses. When it comes to people, Dan overthinks everything, and gets stuck in his own brai way too easily. Dan has serious baggage from his childhood, which still results in his first response being the urge to run away from whatever emotional issue is cropping up. Then there's Evan. Evan can be insanely jealous and overprotective of his guys. He's impetuous and bold, but isn't that great at inter-personal aspects, either, even though he's the CEO of a giant corporation. Evan jumps to conclusions, and is just as quick to try and find the fix for the problem. Unfortunately, he's not always great at getting input for his fixes.

Out of the Darkness takes place immediately after Dark Horse. While Dan is trying to find his place with Jeff and Evan, he's still constantly over-thinking every step of the way. This book further highlights the imbalance in their relationship. I love the connection between Dan and Jeff. Jeff is the calming force in the relationship. He's strong, self-assured, and has an ability to bring everyone together. Although, we find that this isn't always the case, even Jeff has his doubts and fears. As far as Dan and Evan go, I don't get the same feeling with them. There's always a complication or problem that comes between them. Evan is jealous and insecure and this does nothing but cause a rift between them. Dan is the odd man out in the relationship but I find myself feeling that Evan is really the one on the outside.

We still don't find out anything about Jeff and Evan's relationship. I need more!!!! They had issues before Dan came around, but how deep did they go? I know they love each other but I don't feel it. This is becoming increasingly frustrating.

My biggest gripe with this book was the epilogue. I would have been much happier with Dan acknowledging his feelings and end at that. I'd rather wait and see them work out their issues before any of this happened. I can see how Dan would want to move forward but after all the ups and downs, this was quite a leap at this point in the story. It really threw me, so I may be dropping this to a 3.5 after some further thoughts on the matter.

I think I said yesterday in my review of Dark Horse that I would wait a while before reading this book. And then I stupidly read the first chapter of this that was included in the first book. So. Of course I couldn't leave it there and I HAD to read this today. And that's what I've done all day. And it was worth it, despite the continuing up and downs in the relationship between Dan, Evan, and Jeff. But did I read the first chapter in book three, included at the end of this book? Hell no, I'm not stupid! I know I'll get to it eventually, but it's time to take a little break from this trio.

Two additional notes upon further reflection: Evan's assistant seems to have changed names from Linda to Sam. I'm not sure when that happened, but Linda is missing from this book and he tells someone to contact his assistant Sam and she'll take care of them. Annoying. Second point -- this book made me laugh out loud several times, so even though there's plenty of angst, it's also got some truly hilarious interactions, between any number of the characters. Good stuff!

I liked this continuation of Dan, Jeff and Evan's story a lot, and yet it didn't work quite as well as the first book for me. I wasn't completely convinced that Dan and Evan had a strong enough relationship (other than sex) without Jeff connecting them, to make the trio really balance out. Dan's emotions bounce around a lot and he sometimes seems a little unreasonable. But this is still an engaging story with a great equestrian setting, interesting secondary characters, and three heroes who deserve to be together. These two books also have to be one of the best examples of third person present tense writing I know of. Usually I dislike that, but in Kate Sherwood's hands I completely stopped noticing it.

This book was almost 5 stars for me. In my opinion the writing itself was perfect butt there were a few things missing towards the end that would have made all the drama in both books worth every second. It is of course a testament to the author's skills, that i equally disliked and pitied the main character. I realized that my dislike was due to my own personality and approach to relationships. The mc was portrayed accuractly in both personality and past relationships, i just still wished he was not such a basket case. Yet it was precisely his insecurities and hang-ups that kept me glued to the end. *sigh* I'm such a weirdo!

I'm glad I finally got around to reading Out of the Darkness. This is the second book in Kate Sherwood's Dark Horse series, and you need to read these books in order.

Now that the three guys are together all kinds of insecurities and issues are surfacing. Sherwood builds all kinds of interesting angst, and I enjoyed it all.

The nicest part is getting to know Tat :).

The audio version of Out of the Darkness is beautifully performed by Peter B. Brooke.

Out of the Darkness is the sequel to Dark Horse and you must read the first to really appreciate the second. As a follow up, the story establishes the threesome and gives hope that they will finally work things out to stay together. Unfortunately the story isn’t as engaging and interesting as the previous book and I found myself wondering why the characters made the choices they did. There is a definite lack of context to Jeff and Evan that is a glaring hole in the third person, present tense writing. Those that liked the first book will definitely want to continue with this relationship but it didn’t keep my attention nearly as much as Dark Horse.

Picking up where the first book left off, Dan is newly involved with Jeff and Evan. Dan is not only getting over the death of his lover but he’s trying to navigate the sticky waters of a threesome. His emotions are all over the place and he bounces between wanting to make it work and wanting to bail. Add in some horse drama, ex’s and friends that all have opinions, and finally some sex to make a complicated story but one that has a happy ending.

The story is told from Dan’s third person perspective but in present tense. This takes a while to get used to and even more so in this offering. The story starts kind of slow with Evan’s precocious younger sister in a horse related accident. Of course Evan freaks out and Dan retreats to his shell, leaving Jeff to bring the two together and mend fences. This sets up the pattern for the book as Evan and Dan clash repeatedly, leaving Jeff as the force that makes them work things out and continue. On the one hand, this sets up a good dynamic that makes every person important to the relationship. Yet on the flip side, Evan and Dan only seem to be together for the sexual chemistry and because they both want Jeff.

Dan comes across as pretty selfish here as he struggles to find his footing in the relationship. He gets jealous about Jeff and Evan being together, yet takes advantage of alone time with both men. Jeff and Evan seem to bend over backwards to make Dan feel wanted, desired, and let him set the pace and the rules. I kept wondering why since there is nothing offered from their perspective. I couldn’t understand why either of these men decided so vehemently they wanted a relationship with Dan, who is prickly, aggressive, and riddled with rules about what he allows and what he doesn’t. His bouncing back and forth between wanting in or out of the relationship goes on until the very end with ultimately Dan making the decision.

Dan’s not a bad guy really but he’s complicated with a lot of issues and he demands a lot from his lovers. They give it with few qualms but it didn’t quite make sense why they were so willing to work for this relationship. Perhaps it’s the sex, which apparently is great between the men. There’s not much sex in the book though, a few quickie blowjobs and a few threesomes that are fade to black so I couldn’t really get a handle on this energy that is supposedly so explosive between them. Instead Dan comes across as melodramatic and often self centered. Since there is very little development offered to Jeff and Evan, they remain mysterious.

The writing is good and once the story picks up, rather engaging. It’s slow to start and Dan is the sole character of note. There are a few outside influences from Evan’s friends, Jeff’s mother, Dan’s ex and so on that make appearances. These mostly help to move the story along while Dan emotionally waffles on his choices. These side characters also help keep the tension alive without being so emotional that the reader gets frustrated. They offer outlets for Dan’s angst and help even out the otherwise rocky pace and tone.

Overall this is a decent sequel to the first book but not as good unfortunately. The epilogue however is a nice way to end the story with all the characters happy and settled.

2026 re-read:

I re-read this whole series as a New Year's binge read and had a lot of fun with it. (At least when I wasn't crying. How did I forget how sad some of this is?!?!? The grief was not as fully past-tense as I remembered.) The full-length novels are probably each 3 stars on their own, but some of the in-between novellas and short stories are excellent, so I think I'm giving the series as a whole a 3.5. Some of the character work is really impressive.

There are some weaknesses, and it's one of those re-reads where it's hard to tell if I would have stuck with it long enough to fall in love if I hadn't already read it before. It was probably right on the line, but I did get sucked back in and could definitely see bingeing the whole thing again in another 5 or 6 years.

Original 2020 review:

4 stars

Oh me lord the annnnnnnnnngst. There were times when Dan was having one of his "this will NEVER work!!! WE SHOULD JUST GIVE UP!!!" freakouts that I was nodding along with him, thinking yeah, dude, you're right. This will never work -- if you don't stop freaking the fuck out every damn time things aren't perfect YOU CRACKHEAD. I love how clear and honest with himself he is during his internal moments, though, because you really do understand where he's coming from and how his brain works.

He has a skewed perspective on interpersonal relationships from his past and childhood, and I love getting all of Chris's insights into how Justin handled these freakouts. These guys have a whole extra dynamic complicating things, but they prove time and again how much they care about Dan by navigating these freakouts over and over. Sometimes it feels a little unrealistic for the short time they've known each other, but it's really just a product of how much Jeff and Evan trust their own minds and their own instincts and how well they can read Dan, even when he's having trouble reading anybody else.

I did finish this one hesitating to jump into Book 3 because the angst had my stomach all tied up in knots and I wasn't sure I could take another book's worth of it, but then I realized there were a bunch of fun shorts/novellas available. I read those next and then didn't hesitate to continue after that.

The angst is seriously strong with this one, but it's not melodrama or neuroses. Dan's thoughts are just expressed so clearly that you really feel the pain and confusion he's feeling, even when you know his perceptions aren't very accurate.

My take on the threesome -- with the caveat that everything I know about polyamorous relationships came from books/GR -- is that

SO-again..Chris was just the ripest-juiciest-peach of a character. I actually liked Dannyboy with Chris..where he seemed as different as night and day. He was a much more solidified and authentic character with their witty banter and chemistry-drunk moments. Their writing had a completely different tone..it was almost Jekyll and Hyde-like in its appearance.

EVAN-still my close 2nd..behind Chris..he seems to make insecurity attractive and becoming.

JEFF-what can I say..might as well be put out to pasture. One of the worst massacres of a character I have read to date. His characterization was a struggle. His character assassination began with the very first 'too-old' thought and quips. A real shame and disappointment that somebody-anyone didn't slam the brakes on his demise. His only defining moment before he began heading South was in the first book when we don't know much of him yet and he confidently marches forward taking control..of Dannyboy..seemingly staking his claim. We read into the strong hint of him being a physically-rich and palpable character with determination and promise to come. How his character was hi-jacked from that point on is anyone's mystery. Simply put his sexless-mannerisms-dialogue and too-old-too-often-remarked-upon-age..(wtf-40+ is NOT old)..just SUCKED..Jeff SUCKED. I could really elaborate more on how this poor guy got hacked in the writing but must refrain from doing so..
{wipes off machete}

Dannyboy-as if one character hi-jack per story isn't enough..the more merrier. In fact..let me count the ways Dannyboy got hacked.
1. DUDE-
2. ME.ME.ME.ME. All about ME-DANNY-
3. DUDE-
4. PUPPET-Chris (NEEDS a hook-up w/nitwit INNER-Goddess of '50 shades of Grey'-
5. Wishy-washy mofo (NEEDS a door to SLAM his drama-soaked ass on the way out)-
6. DUDE-
7. Worse-ever..than any melodramatic drama-loving-estrogen-heavy HO..ever-
8. Danny-close 2nd behind Jeff in character assassination attempts but Chris saves him-
9. Forget stable slut..he missed his calling in penis porn.
10.DUDE-
{{BIG sigh}}

and dafuq happened to my pitbull Lou..she only made one tiny appearance. I missed her blockhead.

You'd think this would have made it past the present tense the second time around..but guess not.

I did enjoy this read..and the potential possibilities in my imagination..minus my personal peeves. It'll do.

(reread) It's always a bit of a disappointment when the second book isn't as good as the first. And I don't agree with my previous statement that the last chapter—the epilogue, I mean—was perfect. Today I found it too random. After all the downfalls the three of them had, I felt like the epilogue was too good to be true.

Still, I really enjoyed the book, even with all the talking between the characters and the repetitive drama throughout the book. I definitely plan to read this series again in the future, despite its flaws.

previous review:

I flew through this book too, as I did with the first one.

There was a lot going on, plot wise, which was great because that way the book actually held my interest. Though, keep in mind, the relationship between Dan, Jeff and Evan was the plot. Not much else was going on, but I didn’t mind.

The only thing I wasn’t necessarily a big fan of was the repetitiveness of the characters and their insecurities. They talked a lot about the “how’s” and “why’s” of their relationship but I wasn’t all that sure if they actually had any kind of plan. It got very frustrating because Evan, Jeff and Dan couldn’t get on the same page emotional wise.

The last few chapters were very much perfect though. We finally got some sense of security which was nice since everything until then felt anything but secure. It was really rather a great ending for book two.

Overall I would give this a 3.5 star rating.

I admit the plot line was very interesting and the story contained quite a number of issues the threesome had to overcome, most of which even couples had to endure. Lack of trust, insecurities, former hurts, jealousy, establishing one's worth and status within the relationship, coming to terms with a less than perfect past and how much of it influences your present and future.

All three characters were flawed but you loved them more because of them, because they fought to overcome them and better themselves. I felt that Jeff (as Dan and Evan noticed) was not overly discussed and most of the agitation in the relationship was between Dan and Evan (some of Dan's inner monologues making me wonder if he really loved Evan or just accepted him because of Jeff).

But somehow, I wasn't drawn to the characters as I was in the first book, hence the lower rating. I can't say what was wrong with it exactly, just snippets of things that made the book ok-ish rather than great, as opposed to the first novel. So don't take the rating in consideration. As I said, I liked the story, the characters, the dilemmas and the twists and turns that brought the characters together. I just didn't love them.

Out of the Darkness is the sequel to Dark Horse. Dan is beginning to build a new life for himself, finding his place in California with his lovers Evan and Jeff. When things are going well, it's spectacular, but things don't seem to go well all that often. Dan continues to struggle with the loss of Julian and sometimes doubts that he even deserves to be happy. He is a late-comer to the relationship, since Evan and Jeff have been together a long time. He feels like a third wheel.

Evan is jealous of every rival for Dan's attention. He senses that Dan is afraid of commitment, and he doesn't trust Dan, what pisses Dan off.

The connection between Dan and Jeff is great. Jeff is the calming force in the relationship. He's strong, self-assured, and has an ability to bring everyone together. But Jeff fears that he's too old for the younger men and wonders if he should bow out completely. So nothing is as easy as the three guys want it to be...

These men are extremely addictive. I've never read a book involving a threesome quite like this and I highly recommend all books in the series.

Only one book and a few short stories to go. I don't want it to be over! :)

First read 02/11 - 5 stars

After finishing now I have to change that to 2 stars.
What happened between 2011 and now? The book didn't change, so it must be me. Obviously it was the wrong decision to re-read. In my memory this whole series was outstanding and wonderful, well, only one of the shorts was rather horrible. Anyway, now this book got totally on my nerves. These guys talk and talk without end but they solve nothing. It all moves in circles. Dan behaves like a teenager, realizes it and apologizes and everything starts again. This was so tiring and boring that I started skimming at some point only to realize - nothing changed along the way. *sigh*
Now I need a break before I read the remaining books/short stories. Perhaps I'll give them all a miss.

This second book of the Dark Horse series was a complete struggle of how to get into a real relationship where three persons are involved, It's how to make to work a polyamory history where nobody wants to be wounded or damage the feelings of the other.
 photo image_zpsc685b38f.jpg

Well, I enjoyed this a little less than the first one, the continuos introspection of Dan sometimes gets me a little bored, but it's a great read anyway. My only complain is that we only can see the Dan POV and I wanted to know the feelings and thoughts of Jeff an Evan, why they want and need Dan in their relationship so much?

Maybe I'll get the answer in the next one:)
