Aris Calisto, newest student at Aether Academy of Crystal Magic and Witchcraft not only stands out with her quirky outfits and bubblegum pink hair but also draws attention by being what’s considered the lowest of the low in the Akasha society- a Mixta.

When mysterious things start happening, including unexpected bindings, things going missing, and being claimed by a not-so-traditional familiar, Aris realizes she’s in over her cotton candy-colored head. Enter in the five guys who have been magically roped into Aris’s rodeo:

-Caspian, the playful potions brewer,
-Drayce, the summoner who never seems to get overwhelmed,
-Kye, a broody rune drawer who Aris can’t help but pester,
-Xan, the spell caster with no sense of humor to speak of,
-and Torryn, the history professor who seems to demand every waking hour working on mastering her power.

With a cauldron full of men behind her, can Aris use her i’magic’nation to figure out what’s happening to her capricious coven? Or will she find out that life’s a real witch?

I wanted to like it.. but just couldn't.

Witch, Please had some cute moments.. but I don't get the big deal about a college student and teacher being a thing. I mean it's a reverse harem and shit.. but they are both adults. It's not like it's a college professor and a middle school student or even high school. Eh, I don't know.. maybe I'm in the wrong here?

Other than that, I feel like not a lot happened in this book. I'll be honest, I was one hundred percent bored with this one. The only good thing, that made me die from laughing so hard, was the vicious chicken. I'm definitely disappointed in this one because I love harem books but this one just wasn't my cup of tea.

I also think I hate the word 'cupcake' now. Never want to see one or hear that word ever again in my life.

I'm not sure where to begin...

I'm really not, this barely got a 3 star rating from me and that's pretty much only because I liked Aris's character and thought the book began well.

I think the book started going down hill when the sex started. I don't have an issue with sex, but when you start adding sex scenes to almost every chapter something else suffers and in this case it was the plot. Additionally the relationship is RH but it doesn't feel like an RH. When they have their group dates it comes across more like friends hanging out. All but one of the sex scenes was individually and there isn't even much PDA in front of the others. It's almost as if she knows it bothers them to share and so keeps it behind closed doors. The one shared sex scene, Aris wasn't even the focus of. It was a shared sex scene because Drayce is bi and he wanted a piece of Caspian too so he was the focal point of the scene rather than her. And everyone else took off uninterested in being around for that. It was completely missing the sense of cohesion that makes why choose romance work. In fact when she was first collecting partners it almost came across like cheating.

Parts of this, especially the part where the familiars show up come across like wish fulfillment rather than valid plot points. And that also comes across as the authors floundered for an issue for the characters to face. Other than the fact that spells were used to make some of the problems happen this didn't even need to be a fantasy novel and honestly the same things could have happened without magic at all with minor tweaks to the scene. While in one 2 page scene they actually present what could be a realistic fantasy problem and a reason for the constant wish fulfillment, its never escalated beyond hey this could be a future issue if we don't keep our mouths shut. It's not an actual issue. To list a few of the conflicts, Aris faced disapproval from powerful parents, bullies, discrimination, a suitor with unwanted parental expectations and a stalker followed by potential blackmail. Not a single one of those issues need a fantasy backdrop to occur. Also even if one of those was the big bad the focus between them bounced so much that none of the issues held a lot of weight. The proper build of escalating threats spread throughout the plot before facing the big bad didn't really occur. Even the incidents with the stalker who they finally decided to make the big bad as the book meandered through sex scenes, had a few altercations in later chapters of the book.

The plot also skips time, putting multiple dates with unrelated events told in short scenes in each chapter rather than a continuous narrative. Overall the plot lacks direction altogether.

Also in some of the scenes the male characters, particularly Kye, Drayce and Xan start to blend rather than remaining distinctive.

Structurally, things like spelling and grammar was completely sound. This book was extremely well copy edited. It also took the time to add details, create a rich setting and give the characters emotion. What it could have really used was a detailed plot outline with forward momentum, distinctive characters and an idea, besides wanting a bunch of different men, as to how it was a polyamorous relationship and the dynamics of that relationship.

It was okay, but no where near great.

Amazing!

Omg I need more! More, more, more! This was an amazing starter for this new series and I cannot wait for book 2! I fell in love with all these characters and even though there were times I wanted to smack Aris for being so stubborn and not following her gut it was still a good read. I have several unanswered questions but hopefully with time all will be revealed!

Could've been great

While it has interesting characters, good ideas for the world and the magic, it's really spoiled by the execution. Things seem to happen out of the blue, and deeper exploration of important plot points is abandoned for pointless waffle about snacks... I think this book has the potential to be really good, but as it is I found it frustrating and probably won't bother to read the rest of the series.
AJ Macey's Best Wishes series is much, much better.

I can't help feeling uncomfortable at how quick it got hot and streamy considering there wasn't anything to lead up to it at all.

Sometimes the interactions between the character felt off. Like how quick she was to get mad without any reason. Or how the heroine is suddenly cussing when she has been this bubbly happy person in the beginning.

I guess for this story it would of worked out better if it was slower in the romance department.

This wasn't awful, but it wasn't good enough for 3 stars. It felt like it was written by a bot. There was 0 chemistry, and the injection of witchy shit in the dialogue ("Did someone brew on the wrong side of the cauldron this morning?" "Oh my broomsticks!") were just making me frown and/or roll my eyes.

It could also use an edit, just little shit like "I stuffed my hands in my jean pockets." which isn't technically wrong, it just doesn't roll off the tongue or the brain-tongue very well. Yes, you can have like a jean jacket. Jean is a word. However, I think what she's trying to say is that this bitch is putting her hands into the pockets of her fucking jeans, not that she is putting her hands into pockets made of jean.

I stuffed my hands into my 95%- viscose and 5%-cotton pockets.

No.

Also, "I quicky veered the winding corridors..."

Just give me a moment to be irritated and collect my thoughts.

You can veer down the winding corridors. You cannot veer the winding corridors. This is bot writing to me. When you use words almost right, it's like on Family Guy with the Euro dudes who have like no Euro accent but then say shit like "19 dollars 90," and you know something ain't right.

Anyways, fully meh. Do not recommend.

Holy fuck, I'm so mad I just spent four hours on this.

The pretty idiot that attracts all of the smartest, most interesting men shit may work for some people.... I am not one of them. She can't read any book or listen to any people talk for longer than two seconds or she's bored and lost. She keeps having attempts made on her life.... and as it turns out, she has magic... but apparently the threat to her life isn't enough for her to practice at all.

The first half of the book was strewn with terrible, forced puns that were in no way clever and just ended up making her more annoying to me. A lot of things make her sad, but when it comes to standing up to any of it... she doesn't. She backs down.

Hard fucking pass for anyone looking for a solid storyline. The males were awesome, too bad the rest was so awful.

Witch, please is the first book in the new series by A.J. Macey and Jarica James - Not Your Basic Witch. The story is fun, sexy and overall an enjoyable read.

Aris Calisto is a little late to begin her first year at Aether Academy of Crystal Magic and Witchcraft, lucky for her (and unlucky for him) she gets a rather grump tour guide with Kyelerian. Aris is introduced to each of her guys throughout the day from Kyelerian to Caspian to then...well you’ll just have to read it to see.

POV’s interchange within the chapters, but I love that theses are clearly defined so you know which characters POV your reading.

Really loved the little Harry Potter references in the story. I can’t wait to read the second book - Resting Witch Face.

This book was a little more cutesy than I am used to, but I mean come on, I knew it would be by the name and a cover. Although there are certainly some steamy times to be had as well. This was a great premise and plot that I hadn't seen before. I really enjoyed the story and the characters as well. Everything meshed really well, the characters, the world, the plot. Some of the sayings are a tad cheesy, but I get it, this is a different realm, so I can just let is flow. This is told in multiple POV.

For a girl who hates pink (that's me!), I completely adored the girl who loves pink, and is always in pink, from head to toe. (that's Aris!)

And the best part were Drayce and Caspian!! Oh my... Together they were so cute!

Can't help but read the next book. Don't mind me.

Alright first some quick explanation in this world there are 5 main classifications of witches: Potions, Divination & Scrying, Summoning, Spell Casters, and Elementals. Witches that don't fall neatly into one of these are called Mixtas, and are seen as the lowest of the low. Being a mixta is why Aris is so excited for a fresh start at Ather Academy, its a chance for a new start and to escape a family that wants nothing to do with her.

What I liked:

The cast of characters is extremely diverse and interesting. In this reverse harem you have all of your favorite personality types, the studious one, the sweet one, the bad boy and a couple more mixed in. They balance each other out well and I love the different familars they get.

I really enjoy how magic is used in this world. With the main five types there are a ton of different ways to utilize powers, and it makes a good allegory for people being bullied for things completely out of their control.

What I Disliked:

The physical aspect of all of the relationships were extraordinarily rushed. Yes they were bound by magic, yes it wasn't all of them, but still she had sex with half of her harem in less than two weeks, and the others shortly there after. I prefer when the relationships are built up over time and it leads here, especially when there are multiple people involved.

I also don't feel like the dynamic was completely realistic. Seriously no jealously, at all, from any of them? It doesn't feel real, being okay with sharing is one thing. However, being jealous of her time, not being fully comfortable seeing her doing PDA with any of the others is completely natural and the absolute lack feels weird.

In Summary:

Over all, I won't be continuing this series. It is cute and sweet and I really enjoy the world building, the central conflict was interesting, and there is intrigue as to what will become of the little group. That being said the unrealistic nature of the relationships makes me not want to continue, it's something that I have a hard time getting past.

Hexactly what the witch doctor ordered.

Witch, Please is a fun look at a new paranormal world created by Macey and James. Even though we have some not-so-funny themes like being unaccepted, being “less than”, and finding one’s place, Witch, Please doesn’t take itself so seriously that we don’t have some great laughs, smiles, and squeals along the way.

Aris is sort of their world’s equivalent of a Squib. She has the parentage that should lend her great power and specialization, yet she’s been deemed a Mixta. To her family’s utter and cruel disappointment, she doesn’t seem to have what it takes to uphold their legacy.

Lucky for us, there are some things Mommy and Daddy dearest don’t know- like Aris is accomplishing unexpected feats of magic. That she’s gathering a group of diverse, powerful, and of course s*xy hexy men around her. And that she’s a force to be reckoned with...or at least she WILL be once she figures out what the hex is going on!

Aris’ men are flirty and grumpy and kind and smart and loyal and....can you tell yet that there’s something for everyone? We’ve got brothers, we’ve got a teacher, we’ve got m/m. I feel like Oprah right now- AND YOU GET A NEW BOOK BOYFRIEND, AND YOU GET A NEW BOOK BOYFRIEND. Really, I think readers will be quite happy. I definitely am!

The action is well-paced and fitting to the goal of book 1: it’s the beginning of self-discovery while Aris finally sees that she’s not what she’s believed she is her whole life. THAT’S our main arc, but there’s also something sinister going on beneath the surface- and I don’t want to spoil that- so I encourage you to read closely.

Overall, Witch, Please is a great start to this new world, and it’s setting us up to dive right into action with book two. We get the discovery of powers, the establishment of Aris’ harem, and learn more about the larger universe where James and Macey plan to stay for at least five more trilogies. And let’s not forget all the punderful plays on witchy words- maybe it’s the secret Dad in me, but they always made me smile.

3.5 hexing stars!

I picked this book up for something fun to read for Halloween. This was a super cute, quick, funny, witty, quirky, reverse harem, magic academy read with a bit of suspense thrown in.

I’m not sure if I can count this as my first magical academy book as I’ve read the Harry Potter series, but it’s definitely my first new adult reverse harem book.

Aris is a sassy, pink haired witch who was sent to Aether Academy of Crystal Magic and Witchcraft to try and develop her magical powers into something more that her parents won’t be ashamed of. While she’s there she meets 5 men who end up being her bonded/fated mates, each one bringing out a new magical power within her.

Caspian is the boy next door. Torryn is the sexy professor (and also Caspian’s big brother). Drayce is the bi-sexual flirt. Keyelarian is a senators son and the perfect student. And finally, there’s Xanthius, the broody bad boy.

I found myself enjoying this book more than I thought I would. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series when it comes out.

Just a bizarre and frustrating mess. When your authors aren't even bothered to keep up with the universe they've created, why should the reader? Vague explanations that characters draw huge conclusions from. A horribly laughable villain. The absolutely criminal use of cutesy nicknames. Characters that are just bland cardboard stereotypes. Let's not forget our oh so quirky main character. She has pink hair and wears tutus, isn't she so cute and fun?! I spent the majority of the book eye rolling and thanking the universe that I didn't pay money for this book.

The first book set in this world kicked the series off with bang!! Great characters and world building helped set the tone for this book. The writing flowed seamlessly and extremely well written with flare and sass. I personally loved that it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows which just added to the storyline and helped round it all out. A great read with a little of something for everyone including brilliant witty punchlines. The two authors did an extremely brilliant job of writing this book.

Super cute and funny. Filled with witchy puns but with something sinister brewing (couldn't help it!) in the background.

Plenty of world building but not too much information so that it overwhelms the story.

This is a fast burn RH with a whole lot of storyline to back it up.

Aris is just charming and I can't wait for book 2

I found this book on Amazon where you can read the first few chapters to decide if you wish to buy the book and keep reading . Read the free chapters thought it was a young adult bubblegum book about a young witch going off to boarding school, OK Harry Potter”ish” I can handle this.
Bought the book and WOW did some one else start penning it? This little book turned into a soft porn teen sex book “F” bombs going off everywhere “Fing” going on like rabbits. Am I really reading a YA book? Thank the gods I got to a chapter where they started drinking and it was noted that they were of age. OK I can handle this, the book is actually an adult book and these kids are actually adults though be it the girl does act like a horny adolescent. The school must be a college for witches. Good thing because this book was getting a bit pervey feeling.

Well, that was unexpected.

I enjoyed this for the most part, and I liked the direction that the author was taking the characters in. My main gripe, if you will, is that the story seems to get lost under the relationships and bonds that Ari and her guys form. Yes, it’s important to establish the so called factions, but it dominates what is an interesting premise.

Still, I will continue on to the next book to see what happens, because that ending was rather ominous (and not a little creepy).

Judging from the cover and the blurb, I thought this would be trashy. But it's actually quite funny and gripping once you get past the fact that the main character feels like a typical Mary-Sue. There are lots of parallels to Harry Potter due to the magical school setting, except for the fact that lots of Paganism, Wicca and occult stuff is being referenced (like the Law of Three and the several sabbats for example)... and, well, the reverse harem thingy. A light-hearted and easy read with a few dark twists here and there lurking around the corner.

Three Stars

I liked that no one in the harem was an a**hole. I did like that some of the men was virgins. That was refreshing and worth the three stars.

Spoiler
My issue is that the virgin MC lost her virginity within 3 hours of meeting a guy. No self-control.

Every single guy she met, she thought was hot. All the guys, thought she was hot.

Who would think telekinesis was not cool. The fact that she doesn’t have to use runes makes her superior; therefore the totem pole made no sense to me.

I did not like the weird mystery that started in the second half of the book. It felt that it was thrown there just to conclude something. But in reality, the book is just about the harem getting to know each other.

This was an ok book, but I’m stopping at one.

Exactly what I needed (warning: spoilers ahead!)

Well, this book came at exactly the right time for me. It's the kind of book we all need to cleanse our palates every once in a while. Witch, Please introduces us to Aris, a witch with a bubbly personality. She's a mixta, meaning she has no affinity and is being treated as lesser in the witching community, including her own parents and siblings.

She's sent to an Academy far from her home to develop the elemental affinity that runs in her family because her parents really are that judgemental. Attending said academy she soon feels a pull toward multiple male witches, a pull that is practically unable to resist. Together with the boys she tries to find out what is happening to them.

This book is definitely a fast burn just the way I like it. The plot is light-hearted and compelling, I couldn't put the book down while reading. I love Aris's personality and the authors did a great job creating her character, because she is flawed and vulnerable underneath her lively exterior, making her relatable and real.

The boys all have their own distinct personalities, again the effort the authors put into their character development shows. These ladies are talented and a force to be reckoned with.

My heart really flopped in my chest the moment the familiars arrived. Yep, I have a soft spot for animals and these babies were just too cute. I loved the way they played an active part in this book and I NEED more of them!

Last but not least: the plot was well thought out. There is some suspense and mystery surrounding the conduit/tether bonds. The 'mean girls' are a must have in school settings, I do love some jealous possessive behaviour, especially when the boys are totally smitten by the FMC. I can't wait for the next book in this series, especially after that SOB cliffhanger. So mean... But all in all, I'm super excited to read more book babies of these authors.

This was cute, campy and fun. There are a lot of puns flying and for the most part it's very upbeat. It did move a little slower paced than I liked and sometimes I kind of felt it was a little confused about if it was high school or college with some of the attitudes and classes (this is set with adults in a magic college). There was quite a bit of humor throughout and we get an HFN while waiting for the next book. A plus for a lot of people, this has no cliffhanger! Editing was well done with no major errors. I am likely to read the next book.

An academy book for non academy lovers!

So, I don't read academy books as a general rule. I feel like I'm too old to relate to the characters and often find myself struggling to read through their angst and dramas. However, when I saw that A.J. Macey had written one I had to give it a try because I've loved every other book she's written. I'm so glad I did! The characters in this book are adults (18 and up) which definitely helped- and meant that we get smexy times! But they also deal with everything in a more mature way meant it the tension is HOT rather than annoying. I can't get over how A.J Macey is able to write such different characters and yet still make them all so relatable and her and Jarica James work so well together the book blends seamlessly.
Anyone who loves.. well basically any genre of RH should read this because it's just that good!
