2022 reads, #41. This is exactly the book I wish existed seven years ago when I officially began meditating, interested in it for its secular wellness properties but as an atheist not even the slightest bit interested in the woo-woo nonsense that often comes with the subject. Like many atheists, I eventually drifted to the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program, started by an American university somewhere (maybe Harvard?), in which doctors and Buddhists worked together to discover what about meditation tracks with what we know about Western medicine, then provides a framework for meditating that comes at it from an American vernacular and without any of the religious elements. And that's what this book is too, by a therapist and psychiatry professor in New York who obviously is strongly on board with the MBSR method, and here has broken it down into 50 important things to understand about mindfulness and Western medicine, cleverly presented as 50 small exercises people can do at home in order to learn the lessons in a particularly memorable way. Too bad for me that I now already know everything that's being talked about here, which will also be the case for anyone who's several years or more now into their meditation habit; but for those just starting out and are not sure where to begin, wary of the more New Agey guides that force you through a bunch of vocabulary lessons and admonish you to "watch your chakras" and the like, this book was basically written with exactly you in mind, and comes strongly recommended in that spirit.
I listened to this via Audible. I found it very helpful. It was almost like listening to my therapist. (except this book is free in Audible if you are a member...so much happier!!)
These exercises the author provides are all about mindfulness in so many different situations. One of my big takeaways from this book is focusing on positive things and not negative. I find myself always thinking about the things that went wrong, or things I could have done better, instead of focusing on the things that went really well or things I was happy about, things I have accomplished.
Being mindful and in the moment helps our mind to slow down and be aware of our feelings and practice how to release the anger or just recognize it.
Mindfulness is receiving a lot of attention these days especially as it pertains to stress management. There are many studies showing how the practice of mindfulness can improve our health. If you are new to the idea of mindfulness, a way of being open and present, this book can help.
This book is broken into six chapters starting with the basics of mindful breathing and bringing mindfulness to your day. Other chapters cover strategies and exercises for stressful thoughts, emotions and communication. For example, learn how mindful listening can help your day run smoother or how to avoid "thought traps" which can ramp up your stress.
If you have problems with insomnia, this book shows how the practice of mindfulness can shorten the time it takes to fall asleep. The book also covers how you can combat the stress of holidays work and even the pressures of social media.to
As part of my focus on improving wellness to combat a chronic health issue, I am very interested in the practice of mindfulness. I have being working on meditation this last year and feel incorporating mindfulness into my day will be a benefit, I found this book to be great for beginners. The exercises and strategies are short and easy to implement.
Thank you to Netgalley and Callisto Media for a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
This book has some helpful tips for becoming more centered and mindful in stressful situations. What I liked best was the author’s approach to formatting the information. Rather than being a book you need to read from beginning to end, this is a helpful guide that you can dip in and out of as needed.
Having trouble sleeping? There’s a section for that. Having trouble with your self-esteem? There’s a section for that, too. Each chapter is based around a theme, and there are exercises that take up two pages each. The themes are:
-Healing the Stressful Body -Conquering Stressful Thoughts -Overcoming Stressful Emotions -Reducing Stressful Communication -Mindfulness on the Go
You can read and enact most of the exercises within 10 minutes (or less!). And from my experience, they really do help.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a copy of this book. This review contains my honest, unbiased opinion.
Thank you NetGalley for the copy of Mindfulness for Stress Management: 50 Ways to Improve Your Mood and Cultivate Calmness that I read and reviewed. I found this book very interesting and helpful in many ways. Some of these tips I have found myself using since I started reading the book and they have helped me in the situations that I used them in. Some of the others I am not so sure about but I am willing to give them a try if the opportunity arises. I was told about mindfulness in therapy and I have been using it on and off for years but this book took it to another level. I am giving this book four out of five stars because it does have a number of things I would like to try.
Listened to the audiobook so I didn’t know how it would be structured prior to listening. It was more workbook style than I expected but that’s actually pretty helpful instead of just talking about how mindfulness or stress management is important, because we all already know it is. Not the most mind-blowing tips but nonetheless interesting and easy to implement routines into daily life.
This was good and to the point with plenty of exercises to achieve calm, stress free life, focusing on what is important and learn to let go of what doesn't matter. The narration was good, his voice was calming.
OK, normally I would give it 3* in my usual rating, but because I'm second to rate this book, and I think it's worth having a look, I'm gonna give it 4*. Its short and straight to the point- gives a lot of ideas on how to mindfully deal with stress. It's a book for those with no patience for all this "hocus pocus" mindfulness bubble talk, where book of 400 pages comes down to 5 sentences. This book will give you a lot of ideas- if you want to tackle stress with mindfulness. Not all of them will suit you, but there is enough to choose from, you will be able to pick one or two.
I really enjoyed the book by Dr. Robert Schachte. It provided many ways to incorporate mindfulness when dealing with stress. As someone new to mindfulness I enjoyed that his ideas were very simple and explained well in how to implement in your lifestyle. I would recommend this to someone with specific stress management needs.
