This collection of short stories was pretty entertaining with my favourites including Hanako-kun turning into a girl and doing ‘girly’ things with Nene to the utter confusion of Kou; Nene turning into a Mokke and learning that we all come from them and Hanako-kun coming down with the uncommon cold. I also quite liked Tiara Minamoto’s chapter too.
Apart from that, the rest were just fine. I think most of these stories were too brief and didn’t really go anywhere. I believe the collection would have been stronger had there been fewer but longer and more compelling short stories. I’m also finding that the more I read about Akane and Natsuhiko, the more annoying they are!
But anyway, it was a decent enough read, I just wanted more substantial stories.
An adorable collection of short stories dealing with every day life with these zany characters! I loved seeing the Mokkes have a more prominent role in this collection considering they were the first rumor that had to be changed. I also enjoyed the small worldbuilding tidbits scattered throughout each story. Nothing earth-shattering, but enough to build more lore and show daily life in a haunted setting.
As for why it has a lower rating than other volumes, it's purely subjective. I liked a lot of the stories, but some weren't as interesting. Also, since this is meant to be more of a slice-of-life volume, there weren't as many emotionally impactful moments since there was a heavier focus on comedy. Still, the artwork was as strong as ever and it was fun seeing the gang do normal, everyday teen activities just in a supernatural infested setting. A fun read for fans of the series looking for a funnier, slice-of-life tone that I highly recommend.
Wholesome.
I CANNOT EXPLAIN HOW MUCH I LOVED THIS BOOK. For a little bit of backstory (that you probably don't care about but I'm still going to write about anyway), I watched all of Toilet Bound Hanako-kun because a friend recommended it to me, and I LOVE LOVE LOVED it. Last week (refer to date that this was posted if you're lost), I went to Barnes & Noble and was initially on a mission to find Sailor Moon books. (Spoiler alert, I ended up buying $70 worth in books OTHER THAN SAILOR MOON.) When I found the Hanako-kun section, and I saw this book...I nearly cried tears of happiness, not even joking. I legit started to go full-on, serious-time fangirl, right there, in the middle of the manga section, in public, in the middle of a Barnes & Noble. Anywho, I read this book today and...OH. MAH. GAH. I AM IN LOVE EVEN MORE (if that's even possible). I even laughed in real life at a TON of parts, which NEVER EVER happens with other books. Other books get an exhale-chuckle in one or two spots. Not Hanako, though. I laughed, FULL-ON LAUGHED in quite a few spots, and even thinking about it afterwards I let out a giggle. Oh well, enough of me fangirling over here, please, reassure me that I'm not the only TBHK FANGIRL over here. ;-; Yes, I am DEFINITELY going to recommend this book to friends! :)
I love TBHK...I can't stress this enough (crying on the inside because nobody will truly understand how much I love TBHK and how much I love this book).
Adorable short stories set in the spaces in between Hanako’s main chapters. It was cute and fun and I loved spending time with the characters in their downtime!
This is a manga that gives an extra couple of seemingly fan requested stories of what the cast does after adventures. It was a wonderful light and funny easy fan read. It was comical and joyful to read about the characters without it being a life or death scenario. Over all I really loved it.
Such fun, fluffy side stories! I was laughing hysterically at their antics. The perfect distraction from the spiral of pain happening in the main series 😢 highly recommend to anyone who’s looking for some light comedy
Pretty short and cute. We got a lot more characterization in this book and we also got introduced to some new (side) characters which was interesting. I laughed out loud when Akane got mad at Kou’s friends for ogling Aoi. It was also funny when Hanako and Nanamine switched genders for a day. I almost died when Natsuhiko said that if Nanamine doesn’t go back to being a girl then he will become one instead so they can be together. Hilarious!
This was pretty funny, especially considering the Mokke played a pretty big role in this book seeing as they included them in almost every chapter. I didn’t even realize they wanted to destroy the world to create a candy land and make humans their slaves. Such a devious plan coming from super cute stuffed-animal-looking creatures. They might as well be comedians.
More Hanako x Yashiro screen time. Loved that. Also loved the (un?)brewing romance between Yako (ex school mystery No. 2) and the teacher who looks like Misaki, who if I remember correctly is her deceased lover? My memory is failing. Anyway, it’s basically a owner/pet relationship that probably won’t go anywhere considering she practically takes the form of a fox? cat? civet…? I still think her little crush was cute and I wouldn’t mind new scenes of them. Also, any scenes with Tsukumori in them were nothing less than entertaining.
Very decent spin-off! More light-hearted than the actual series and will give you a good laugh. This is good content for big fans of the series, aka me, haha.
After-School Hanako-kun is a spin-off manga of Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun. It's a collection of occurrences between the original manga's main characters during their off time.
The Hanako-kun always boasts exceptional artwork, whether you're reading the parent manga series, this new series, or watching the anime. The manga panels are lovingly decorated and stylized. I love the precise, yet chunky and jagged outlining and shading. It pairs well with the writing.
This is a comedy, but it gets dark sometimes, and tends to lean towards the macabre. I love that, but if that isn't your cup of tea this might not be the series for you.
I was most intrigued with the chapter about the Minamoto brothers' sister, Tiara. It's easy to see how she was shaped by her brothers – she has the eldest brother's cunning and brutal force, and the open acceptance that shines from Kou. I'm excited to see where her story goes.
I would absolutely read additional releases in an After-School Hanako-kun series. Thank you to Edelweiss and Yen Press for providing me with a copy of this volume for my honest review.
🇬🇧 It's a simple pastime for in between, 'cause ‘After School Hanako-kun’ is a spin-off and serves to see the characters outside the main story as well. My favourites were: Summer Monster - My school ghost friend Hanako (I finally saw the chapter on which all these pictures were based where Hanako-kun was a girl, was really cool) and Ghost Flu, 'cause I found it interesting that there is something like that too.
These little side stories are SO CUTE! What the characters get up to behind the scenes is so funny. It is super simple compared to the main storyline, but I really enjoy that in a way. I like seeing the characters have fun and just generally have fun being kids, which is something I think none of them get much chance to do. These stories also provide more insight into what some of the other characters are like, not just the main characters. Some of them are entirely centered around side characters. Getting more information about how these characters act from day to day is something I have been curious about.
This is real cute! I love the cover with Hanako-Kun just sticking his tongue out. It's filled with short Jibaku Shōunen Hanako-Kun stories. Not really an add on to the story in anyway but it's just cute to see the characters in scenarios. It isn't a MUST read! BUTTTT it's enjoyable TO read. I only rated it a 3/5 is because personally I wanted more insight on the characters. Like I thought the title meant what Hanako-Kun does after school since the title implies that but no it's just the characters doing fun after school activities! And I'm all here for it!!
So, this is a really fun collection of short stories that revolve around the lives of the different characters that make up the Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun world.
I really enjoyed this collection. Most of the stories are funny or charming in some way. Personally, I always appreciate getting content that allows me to get a “peek” into the personal lives of characters from stories that I greatly enjoy.
Definitely recommend for fans of the main series — I believe you’ll appreciate thumbing through these vignettes~
Super cute collection of short stories in the Hanako-kun universe. This had a good spread of stories on a variety of characters, including a sweet love story focused on Yako, the prickly ex-mystery no. 2. There was also a fun beach scene and an extra silly Mokke chapter that I enjoyed. Perfect for fans of the series!!
It was really good and I enjoyed all of the characters. This would’ve gotten 5 stars if I had known this was a spin-off of another series, Toilet bound Hanako-kun. I didn’t know who the characters were or what was going on, but it was still a fun read and I’m excited to check out the original series.
