Life gets pretty boring when you can beat the snot out of any villain with just one punch.

Nothing about Saitama passes the eyeball test when it comes to superheroes, from his lifeless expression to his bald head to his unimpressive physique. However, this average-looking guy has a not-so-average problem—he just can’t seem to find an opponent strong enough to take on!

The Monster Association has kidnapped Tareo, the boy who admires Garo, and now Garo finds himself plunging headfirst and alone into the heart of the Monster Association’s hideout. Meanwhile, the Hero Association pushes forward with its operation to rescue Waganma, while Genos and the others are living it up enjoying hot pot at Saitama’s place!

As Garo enters the Monster Association HQ for his own reasons and utter carnage and chaos ensues, Saitama the One-Punch Man ponders the earth tremors caused! This wonderfully original series continues with as ever the world around home on the brink, the most lethal and devastatingly powerful superhero is mostly unaware. This volume sees the plotting and art ratchet up as Garo finds himself battling monsters, despite his original intention of becoming one. 8 out of 12 Four Stars for this ongoing work of apathetic humour meets superhero vs monsters urban warfare.

Huhh, the story is still slowing building up, I guess? Have to wait and see how will the huge fight between supervillains and superheroes turn out.

I've gone through these volumes way too fast to stop and review along the way. This is the last volume so far for the ongoing series, and I'm reviewing the whole thing.

The contrast between the illustrator's (Yusuke Murata) magnificent drawings and the writer's (ONE) atypical and often ridiculous storytelling and characters plays out one of the main recurring points of this series: that no matter the talents of the characters, their efforts, their pains and sacrifices, they are rendered almost silly and insignificant when there is a person, the protagonist, that won't get scratched even if he receives an attack that otherwise would topple a building, and that will end (almost) every threat with a single intentionally powerful punch. You witness a numerous cast struggling against each other, playing out their dreams against their limitations, but in the back of your mind you know that if Saitama was there, he'd end it without even letting the bad guys finish their speeches, and would show to every other character how meaningless their efforts are. In a non-expressed way, Saitama becomes Death itself, an impassable ceiling that will come down and crush whoever it wants whenever it wants. It's even stranger when you consider that Saitama doesn't give a shit about most of what's happening. He'd rather just eat some good food and read through whatever mangas he can get his hands on. He barely cares about people; whenever they try to have a conversation with him, his mind wanders, or he gets so annoyed that he tells them to shut up. Those around him that have realized what a God-like force he is attempt to get him to do stuff for them (whether through friendship, duty or devious manipulation), and the rest only see in the protagonist a silly looking mid-ranking hero with an unpleasant attitude. Saitama still has to deal with his main character problem: that he's so ultra competent that life just bores and disappoints him. A very East Asian problem to have, I'd say, and one that fiction usually doesn't touch.

Around 154 volumes in, Saitama has become almost a secondary character in a cast of dozens. The story has followed other people's often independent struggles. First two that come to mind are Genos and Fubuki. Genos', Saitama's cyborg disciple, is attempting to reach the top of the S-class hero registry in order to become as powerful as possible. Fubuki, a gorgeous esper who is also an anxious status seeker and Tatsumaki's far less powerful little sister, tries to secure her position in the hero society through leading a group; when that group collapses, she pesters Saitama and the rest of his close pals in order to form a new group around them. Fubuki might have come to mind first because she looks so good, though.

One of the most interesting new characters introduced is Garou, the hero hunter. As a child, this guy was solitary and gloomy, and popular classmates used him as the monster in their playing sessions. This got to the level of bullying; however, whenever he complained, Garou was the only one to get in trouble. This created a complex in him. As an adult he despised heroes, their numerous hypocrisies, how they tended to see everything in black and white. Not only Garou very explicitly intends to "show them a world beyond good and evil", but he is also obsessed with getting stronger and relying on himself alone, so in a way he is a very Nietzschean character. The second major thread of the series so far is that the numerous monsters, who are often intelligent, decide to band together in an association and fight the hero association for supremacy (in a more monstrous way than "My Hero Academia" does it). These bunch of apostle-from-"Berserk" looking motherfuckers (and if you've gone through the psychological trauma of reading the entirety of "Berserk", apostle-from-"Berserk" is a very specific look) cause the biggest trouble yet. Regarding Garou, the monsters . He's a compelling character; beating up heroes one day and non-creepily chatting up a child interested in heroes the next day.

We are introduced to a lot of intelligent monsters. There are dozens of very interesting designs, but they are still monsters, lacking the nuance that would make them more compelling. The biggest exception to that is their de-facto leader, Gyoro Gyoro, a weird looking esper who wants to raise some human beings to turn them into ultimate monsters.

Beyond Garou, probably the most interesting character we learn more about is King, considered the strongest man alive. In a nice twist, .

A very interesting part about the worldbuilding of this series is how the heroes fight amongst each other for human reasons: they dislike other heros, or resent them for being considered a league above them, or wish they could join their league and therefore have a higher status in the eyes of society, etc. A grievous example of this is when a group of A-class heroes decide to take down a severe threat that would normally require some assistance from the class above; they do it because they want to prove themselves, and are tired of often being set aside to benefit the S-class heroes. Some of the highest ranking heroes have terrible attitudes and seem a bad decision away from turning into supervillains. The kindest ones have to manage the troublesome people very carefully.

My only problems with this series 154 chapters in is that I've found a couple of fights boring, mainly because I just wasn't into the characters involved (the fight between Flashy Flash and a pair of ninjas is the worst as far as I'm concerned), and the current plot thread, , is for the most part a succession of cool fights; they involve cool moves and creative gadgets, but Saitama is absent, probably because he'd just end the trouble with a single punch. A previous plot thread started as somewhat annoying: Saitama registered to fight in a tournament under another guy's name (for the sole reason that the ticket was under that guy's name). Tournament arcs give me flashbacks of people squatting down, clenching their fists and changing their hair color, but beside that, obviously Saitama was going to beat all of them. It ended up being funny and interesting. One of the most promising fighters reflected Saitama somewhat: the guy was a tremendously strong martial artist, but he only fought to get money in order to pay for fun stuff and girls. Otherwise life felt like a chore to him. .

Regarding the future of this series, I don't know how long the author intends to go with it, but he screwed himself by introducing very early Saitama's antithesis in Boros, shown in the last episodes of the first season of the anime. Boros is an ultrapowerful alien that grew bored because no one posed a threat to him. A prophecy stated that in a planet 20 years away Boros would find a mighty opponent, which ended up being Saitama. This alien is the only being .

More Fubuki, please.

This volume was fantastic! It had been a long time since I last read this series, as the new volumes were taking too long to release.

A great hero story needs a great villain—one that even the reader will cheer for or at least understand.

Garou is exactly that. An amazing villain. I would even say, the perfect villain. The perfect antagonist for Saitama.

Garou does it again, breaking all his human limits and getting stronger at an astronomical rate.

Of course, we are waiting to see him finally come up against Saitama and MAYBE hold is own, but that's gonna be some REAL boss level s**t. In the meantime, we've got a full demon army to contend with, and the demon king at the end. Epic battles.:)

This was a good volume to build to the conclusion of this arc, but I am ready for the One-Punch Man to do his thing now. The basic concept of this series is that seemingly unstoppable villain lays wast to everything and Saitama beats it with one punch. Part of the charm with this manga is that it is a parody/send-up of shonen/superhero tropes. This title is at its best in my opinion when it shows the absurdity of what it is parodying, but after about volume 7 when they really started to go for a more traditional shonen narrative within the parody, this title has started to loose some of its potency. Maybe it is because I read other manga now and not just this one, but these drawn-out plotlines and arcs while Saitama is doing random things cause we know everything will be solved when he punches someone to dust is not as entertaining as it one was. Yusuke Murata 's artwork is still as on-point as ever and was one of the highlights here. Had I come to One-Punch Man for a traditional shonen narrative then this volume would be exceptional, but in reality I am ready for this arc (and maybe this series) to wrap up.

GAROUUUUUUU SHIT MAN. this is turning into his story and im ok with it. i am ready for saitama to one punch everything but seeing him like idk.... starting to accept who he is. like he isnt a monster and he can never be a true monster nor does he want to. he just wants to be treated fairly and he sees that in the little snot he takes care of. him fighting the king monster is tough ASF and he keeps on getting beat down over and over again and wont back down. i love him so much hes such an interesting character i cant get enough of

I don't know, maybe just 4.5 stars. Is Saitama even in this comic anymore?
The fights just keep escalating, first a fight among heroes over food, then well several mega fights between the Old Dude and monsters. The Garo fights have some really nice art.
We see more of the Hero and Monster association preparing for the big showdown.

Phenomenal. One-Punch Man may be truly a great manga series, yet it is mainly focused on Saitama. Though I don't complain about that, volume 19 starts the reaping of what character development ONE and Yusuke Murata has sown in him, it is a return of investment you have given to Garo.

Although the fight and is not as epic as Boros vs Saitama (man that was truly a mesmerizing fight that I wanted to read over and over and I am yet to see a fight in OPM as magnificent as that), the one seen here is heavier. Perhaps it is fought underground, or it is dark, or maybe, it is the sheer determination of Garo to win that gives this fight a certain gravitas than fights with Saitama.

This also displays a lot of flexibility from ONE and Murata, deviating from the usual lighthearted and comically overly awesome to one that is borderline Seinen in nature. This tension actually makes me all the more excited when our bald hero steps in. How would he handle things? Who would he fight with?

So oh yeah, I am ready.

And that's the end of Garo, mostly. Garo on a rescue mission, running into Pochi and Orochi. More hype on level Dragon. Saitama casually laid back until Garo's stint finished. The beginning was a bit cringe with Kid emperor cutting out Silver fang and Demon cyborg. Bring on the one punch rampage.

Garou's character continues to be incredibly fascinating. His action conveys heroism yet his mind screams with villainy. It's fun to see him continuously grow, especially knowing that this is just a teaser to a long-awaited confrontation with Saitama that all fans want to see.

Heroes are now diving into the villain's lair by confronting the wave's of creatures and it's nice to see the artists incredible ability to make everything look so beautiful and epic.

Yours truly,

Who is the main character, again? Garo? Saitama? Gyoro-Gyoro? One of the numerous, random heroes? I honestly don't know anymore.

I have conflicting thoughts. The series starts off as a parody of its genre, but now it seems to be trying to establish itself as a serious shonen. I am quite invested in the plot, but I miss the original charm! We don't have a lot of nonsensical manga that poke light fun and add good humor to the shelves!

LOL. Who the fuck made that shower head a demon. LOOOOOLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!! WTH!!

Woah Woah Woah! Garou is still so strong after all the damage he got.

Lol. I just notice on Saitama's tv he has a cute piggy bank with really long eyelashes. LOL IT'S SO CUTE!!!!!!!

Woah Garou still manage to be alive after getting a direct hit of that Disaster level Dragon monster. I am not a fan of him but I felt like he should not die just yet.

Woa. That freaking Gyoro is disaster level Dragon! No wonder but wtf. He doesn't deserve to have that much credit. Gosh I don't like this.

Yayyy.. Saitama finally went out. Wohoooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My hero come on!!!!!!!!!!

Wow Garou really impress me more and more! He is indeed strong.

This Orochi is such a pain!

Lol Saitama is so cute looking for the entrance to the "noisy battle".

LOL. Saitama is hilarious in the bonus chapter. LOL One Punch without any expression. LOL!!!!!!!

LOL. That S class meeting. They trust King a lot they just don't know what he is up to. LOL... So sad for them not to know anything about his personal life and what is really going on.

OOhhhh Genos has new parts again...

Whenever Genos say Sensei to Saitama I feel butterflies in my stomach. I just love it that someone respect him so much like Genos does. I really love it.

LOLLL.. Fubuki is soo ambitious to call the group new fubuki group. LOL...

Also let's not forget Genos being so sweet since he said he will wait for his sensei. Awww so sweet...

LOL They are looking for Saitama but he's already in the sewers. LOL He is just so cute and innocent! I love his innocence a lot. It's cute and hilarious.

lol... Tatsuki is hilarious.
Sekingar: Hey Tatsumaki! Keep protecting us until the end. Tatsumaki?
Tatsumki: Where does it say that I have to protect you lot?
Lolll.. She even has face like Saitama.... LOLLL Good point though. HAHAHA.

Ohhhh those lower class heroes are quite competitive, too.

Also, Misuki is sooo pretty, cute, so sexy and muscular. I like her! (wink)

Those swordsmen are really reliable! I love that. There are indeed strong heroes out there.

*Read for the YA Reading Challenge 2020*

This volume is almost entirely about Garo and his journey into the heart of the Monster Association hive. Child Emperor is trying to figure out who to trust and how to rescue the hostage, but I can't tell if the payoff in that story line is going to worth it, low stakes so far. - Monster King Orochi's back story comes up here and we learn a lot about how the Monster Association came to be, so that's nice detail to see get filled in.

Overall, this has been an interesting arc, but I'm really hoping vol 20 or 21 starts to wrap up the kidnapping plot so we can move forward.

Wait! Are they making Garo anti-Saitama ? Sounds cool . Although panels felt repetitive at times and until the arrival of Orochi , i was starting to get bored .but in the end it was fun to read and the hot-pot scene was funny

Great Volume!
Most of the volume follows Garo and he's growing exponentially. And the heroes may finally invade the monster association next volume. Hopefully. Fingers crossed! :)

Well, I would like a little more Saitama, but I'm really liking Garou's character. He wants to be a Monster and yet there is all of his humanity. He gets defeated not when the enemies try really hard to kill him (well except Saitama), but when the child is in danger and he gets distracted. And here he is to save the same child in the underground, killing the monsters instead of joining them.

(What I root for right now is Garou being mistaken for a hero because he saved the child/killed a lot of monsters - something along the lines of "oh you went undercover to defeat the MA, you really had us fooled with the hero-hunter façade! Here, we're gonna put you in the hero rankings" and Garou being utterly frustrated by it - I could see this manga take this path.)
