Yūki Tabata (Japanese: 田畠裕基, Hepburn: Tabata Yūki) is a Japanese manga artist.
After working as an assistant to Toshiaki Iwashiro, he created the one-shot Hungry Joker, which was later serialized as a full series. After its conclusion, he launched Black Clover.
Asta and Yuno grew up together, abandoned at the same church. They both determined to become Magic Knights... Yuno's abilities soon grew to genius levels of power and control while Asta didn't show even a spark of magic and made up for it by training hard physically. It became apparent to both when they received their grimores, Yuno a coveted 4-leaf clover and Asta an unheard of black 5-leaf clover, that they were each other's biggest competition when it came to achieving their goals of becoming the next sorcerer emperor.
We are at the end of the long running Midnight Sun story arc... and what a wonderful wild ride it’s been! We get to see Asta and Yuno’s idol in action and another wonderful partnership save the day. We learn about the origins of Asia’s grimore at the same time. Nero also plays a major part. (I just love, love, love her!)
The best thing though was seeing Yuno and Asta’s friendship in action! I love when we see two supposed rivals working together for a common good. It’s so friendly, healthy and inspiring. Everything builds to this moment and we get the best payoff.
The art is so spot on too. We see the friends’ evolution and it’s all there in the art. There are several spreads where the art is so stellar as well. I also love the bird’s eye view you get in many of the battle frames.
Black Clover is a stellar battle series. We get setup for Asta’s next trial by fire and it’s so personal and intimate, using his biggest weakness against him. I can wait for the next volume!
What a fantastic ending to an amazing arc. This volume had my most favorite fight scenes and episodes from the anime.
It would have been perfect if not for the last chapters which were such a bummer. But also, it was realistic, and it stresses the fact that prejudice and discrimination are still rampant in the Clover Kingdom, so I can't really complain about it. Still, Asta doesn't deserve this kind of treatment after that insane battle at the Shadow Palace!
The next volumes would be quite rough... Dammit, Damnatio. Devils are so much more interesting villains than bigoted nobles. UGH.
The next volume of the Black Clover manga series concludes our Eye of the Midnight sun agenda. I thought this volume read extremely well, and holds up to the same nostalgic feel I have for the series. It continues to be an all time favourite. 5 stars.
Yes, the final fight against Zagred (Devil) was cool but it was only cool and that's it. I mentioned before that it was not a big plot twist at all. A lot of the things happening are too convenient. To stop Zagred, somehow Elves and Humans combine their power, the first Wizard King is revived somehow, the true leader of the Elves is also here, everyone has a power-up, Nero who turns out to be Secre who conveniently has a sealing power so on and so forth. It is all very cliche shounen manga and even though I can ignore some things, if it happens all the time, it loses its originality and I stop enjoying it. I would rate this even lower because of the absurd ending of the fight but I actually enjoyed seeing all these different types of magic. The aftermath of the battle also feels very forced. I'm not very hyped about the future of the series.
So I thought that this arc I would get a similar ending. But oh, no. I got this ending with a worse spin. So Asta and Yuno with help of now good elves and the help of magical five-hundred-year-old bird and a living statues win. Okay, pretty standard.
But. In the end, we find out that the Wizard King is alive? That he used super time magic and stored thirteen years of his life? So he remembers everything, does not have magic and suddenly is ominous as hell and says that ohoho, Asta will go to trial and there are other kingdoms and we must be prepared. I know that the plot must be driven by something, but... This was not subtle at all.
Then we start the trial of Asta because even though we saved a bunch of people, who are witnesses we need to have a trial because he is the devil and cause of everything. At the same time, knights saved the royal people, who act like cunts and there are so many of them who are magnificent twats. Like this hurts so much. So stupid.
I still enjoy the concept and overall the series, but this gets so stupid. I will give this one last book to finish the trial arc and decide whether to continue or not.

The final battle with the Devil behind the Elves' resurrection comes to a close as Asta, Yuno, the Wizard King, Secre, and Yami all pull out the stops for one last attack. But in the aftermath, all is not as it seems, and Asta's problems are just beginning.
Great ending - the reincarnation arc has gone on for a long time, but this volume definitely feels like a satisfying conclusion. Not entirely sold on the last chapter setting up the new arc, but I'm sure Asta will bull-head his way out of it in no time.
The arc finally comes to an end with some chaotic mess of random energies flying at each other that are difficult to distinguish and have arbitrary lines drawn between what does and does not work at any given moment. And then we start killing people or whatever. At least the war arc is finally done! Now for "politics" (because the political thrills were the part most people enjoyed about Black Clover, it's well-written political nuance of an otherworldly devil committing genocides across millennia), and maybe more wars.
My god, so many things have happened since the beginning of the show. It’s no longer the same piece of crap everyone was making fun of. There is a super powerful devil that controls everyone from the shadows now. This changed everything… Until he was beaten in the same arc he was introduced, and everything went back to how it was before. He couldn’t stay around, he wound change the done to death shonen formula the show is defined by.
But as I said everything is now different. Most of the good guys are possessed by spirits who want to wipe out humanity. This changed everything… Until the spirits went away in the same arc they were introduced, and everything went back to how it was before. They couldn’t stay around, the good guys had to stop trying to murder each other, and go back to repeating the exact same one liner that defines their one dimensional personality.
But as I said everything is now different. They summoned the first wizard king who has very powerful magic and can turn the tides in any battle. This changed everything… Until his magic faded and he went away in the same arc he was introduced, and everything went back to how it was before. He couldn’t stay around, for he was too powerful and would make every battle too easy.
But as I said everything is now different. The traitor who killed the wizard king has been revealed and now the others treat him differently because of what he did. This changed everything… Until they give him a hug and forgive him for his crimes, and everything went back to how it was before. He had to stay around, because he was there since the beginning and without him Yuno would become a captain and we can’t have that.
But as I said everything is now different. The leader of the bad guys is finally dead. This changed everything… Until they resurrect him, and everything went back to how it was before. He had to stay around, because he was there since the beginning and was selling a lot of toys.
But as I said everything is now different. The current wizard king is dead and the kingdom is now defenseless. This changed everything… Until time travel was used so he can be alive again, and everything went back to how it was before. He had to stay around, because he was there since the beginning and was selling a lot of toys. But he also had to be nerfed, for he was too powerful and would make every battle too easy.
But as I said everything is now different. The protagonist saved the kingdom by defeating the devil and is no longer a peasant boy everyone makes fun of. He’s now a great hero. This changed everything… Until the royal family still treats him like shit because they want to blame someone, and everything went back to how it was before. He’s supposed to be a victimized underdog no matter what he achieves, therefore he must never be rewarded until the ending of the series.
But as I said everything is now different. The capital is in ruins and all its enemies have been defeated. This changed everything… Until we are told more kingdoms are about to invade, the capital is repaired, everyone is alive, doesn’t mind all that just happened, and everything went back to how it was before.
My god, so much development and change. Black Clover is no longer a generic shonen, since it has changed completely compared to how it began as.
I'm gonna be real, this was pretty underwhelming. The story wasn't interesting because I'm not attached to Licht, Paltry, and the first Wizard King, the Devil is an uninteresting villain, and aside from Asta, Yuno, Charlotte, and Yami, none of the characters were that interesting.
And after finally being free of that shit, now we have this dumb trial to deal with led by a colossal asshole and I just don't care. Now that the other countries have been properly introduced, I want to see/ learn more about them, not deal with some bullshit trial. Though seeing the Black Bulls fucking bulldoze (pun intended) their way through the court and support Asta was awesome and easily the best part of this volume.
Hopefully the countries become more prominent because after this arc I need something different.
A devil is threatening the lives of the main characters and most of the ginormous secondary cast until 1st Wizard King Prince Lumiere come busting and and pulls a Licht ex machina (with the real one) that pulls the battle out of the immediate danger zone.
But since this is the series of 'You think you've won? HA! Time to ruin your day' it's gonna take more than two super powered wizards to defeat this devil.
At this point, this series is starting to get really boring. It looks cool... but it's been dragged out with filler fights and weird power-ups for so long that the overall weight of the impending doom feels trivial. Basically, there's way too many characters we're supposed to care about that fleshing out their plots takes FOREVER! Especially when it all happens at the same time. Then you shuffle your bad guys right as the boss battle starts so the whole conflict feels almost pointless. Then you pull TWO trump cards out of your ass at the last second making all this build up even more pointless.
I'm hoping that the new arc will be a little different and not so... filler filled.
WOW! Crazy end to this very long "Elven Resurrection" Arc! Original Wizard King Lemuel teams up with his long ago friend Elf Licht and they assist in the fight against the possessed Knights. Asta and Yuno, pushing each other WAY PAST their limits, defeat Zagred. Lemuel fades away, but Secre (Nero) remains behind promising to assist this new generation of Magic Knights. One snag (which leads us into the next arc): Asta's powers have been revealed to have a demonic source, so the Clover Kingdom wants to put him on trial!
Holy crap that was an epic ending to an arc. Asta gets a power up, and doesn’t run out of power before the end of a fight. And the devil inside of Asta? I can’t wait to meet him. But not that we’re out of the really cool war arc, we’re into the government arc in which it’s either dozens of magic knights die or Asta dies. I think we all know Asta is eventually going to take the fall, and my prediction is that he will run away with Nero and the two of them will solve their devil issue and come back to save the clover kingdom and put the house of Kira in their place.

This was a very satisfying ending to a very long arc. I'm glad Tabata wrapped this arc the way he did, because there is a clear promise for a whole lot more. Asta, Yuno, and company only defeated one Devil. However, it is clear there are a whole lot more, one even residing inside Asta's grimoire. I am very excited to see what happens next, because it looks like war is on the horizon for the weakened Clover kingdom.
this was more like a 2.75 that i’m not really willing to round up. i say this every time, but i really get so bored of the fighting sequences in these volumes that last for way too long. silly of me to say that about a literal action manga, but it’s overkill to me. the story was great, i loved this arc through its entirety but yawn just kill the demon already. the art was also super busy in this one but greatly gorgeous.
I loved this arc with the elves so much. Everything about it. The creative plot, the characters, with relationships and their growth, the art, wide varieties of magic, the conclusion of it all, amazing.
Except, I think William got off too easy. But the writer probably just wants to still use his magic in the story. So, instead, he does something like community service.
Of course the writer tops it off with something huge. Which is a beginning to the next arc, leaving us in huge suspense.

The Elf Reincarnation Arc finally ends, with the defeat of the demon guy, and I guess slight power-ups for Asta, Yuno, and Yami. The next arc seems to have a somewhat generic salaryman guy as the antagonist? Well, technically the fan wiki considers this to still be part of Elf Reincarnation, but....

The Midnight Story Arc concludes....and while it was not my favorite arc, it was still enjoyable. A lot of great pages but #83 really hits you with the inspirational "can do" emotions that Yuki Tabata is great at pulling out. The story and art are wildly addictive (as per every volume). Page #155 was a bigger shocker to my system then I thought it would be. Good, good stuff!
