An enchanting picture book about the magic of books and reading. It's naptime, but this young bookworm isn't going to sleep. It's time to read. The Reader is a whimsically illustrated love letter to the powerful combination of books, reading, and the imagination. It is the story of a girl, her family library, and those happy stolen moments during the siesta when she can read quietly while everyone else is resting.
A lovely lyrical story about the wonders of reading. Her books take her on adventures, let her explore the world both real and imagined. It captures what getting lost in a book can do for you.
Loved the illustrations and colour palette in this one. My three year old was really interested by the somewhat surreal images that have the girl walking in and out of the books. I think for a book about books, which usually really struggle, it worked well. I loved the idea of the parents telling the kid she was allowed to read whatever books she could reach, and then her immediately climbing up the entire bookshelf to reach them all.
Bottom line: This might be a 3 in terms of picture books overall, with the images pushing it to a 3.5. But because I'm always looking for books about books or that celebrate reading, and since most of them are so terrible, I'm giving this a 4 because for that genre, it's excellent!
I really liked this book, specifically because a lot of children don't like to read, but this book describes just how fun reading can be. She talks about how it can transform you to places you've never been before, and you can be anything you want by reading. I think that reading this to kids, probably up to 1s grade, can get them more interested in reading, because it makes it sound fun! That is defiantly something i would want to do with my students. A fun lesson i could do with this is to have the students tell the class their favorite story, this could then inspire other kids to read a story another kid talked about because it sounded interesting.
This awesome picture book celebrates the joys of books and reading with a story about a young girl who wakes up early in the morning to spend the whole day reading books. With this coronavirus pandemic requiring social distancing, young readers who must have their schooling and their friendships through online means will appreciate the freedom and fun that awaits between the pages of books - or their e-readers!
Reading this was a special experience. The illustrations are childlike and whimsical, and the story perfectly affirms the benefits of being a reader, young or old.
This is a translation from Spanish and first published in Argentina. A whimsical story of a young child awakening to a day of the joys of reading. Lovely illustrations are paired with the various benefits of reading. For example, “The more I read the bigger the world becomes.” and “I travel without a passport.” The The illustrations and the words make one feel they are on a flowing journey of discovery just like when you read.
Genre: Fiction Age: K - Any Illustrations: I think the pictures were amazing they really told the story of what reading should feel like. Gist: This story is about how this little girl feels about reading. How you can travel to different places, feel all different emotions, and live many different lives. This book is a great way to make kids understand the wonders of reading, and help them to get into it also. Curriculum Connection: You can read this book out loud, and then either have a class discussion, or them write a paper about their experiences with reading. I would make sure to tell them that these feeling could be good or bad, all feelings are valid.
