What if I tell you that I love you? – Zhafri

I still have a few months to go. It’s going to happen, Farah. Insya-Allah, Zhafri akan berubah. Don’t you feel happy for him?” - Ayra

cw: technically a cheating trope (despite them not really committing to it, but it still IS).

• First foremost, apologies because this is going to be just a long rant. To be quite frank, I personally doesn't really like how the story went through. I tend to tolak isu haram halal in storyline because character development existed, and most of the time they're doing their own thing. But this story tend to mention and push the topics of keagamaan, berubah ke arah yang baik dan berbalik kepada tuhan, at the same time judging other people doing the haram things — yet the characters are doing the opposite to what they preaches. Yes, maybe 'dosa' lebih kecik, tapi dosa pun dosa, and I couldn't help but to feel that the topics brought was hipocritical from time to time.

• Onto the plot itself, the idea behind the premise is actually quite interesting, starting a social experiment, but the reasoning itself why they needed to do it seems, dumb, as there's no pengukuhan why it's even a 'need' in the first place. They're bunch of full grown adult, if their agreement were done by teens / young adult, I simply wouldn't mind it.

The premise of 'love experiment' and 'hypothesis' is quite similar to 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days', and I might actually would've loved this tale if they're MORE similar to it. Everything about the story would've make a lot of sense if the career (podcaster kah, news journalist kah, blog writer kah) of the ladies yang became the force for them to do such a ridiculous 'experiment'. Tok nang 100% random and tiba-tiba, and I simply doesn't get the benefit they could get from A YEAR period of experiment.

Personally I don't understand why the plot needed to done in order change a harami man to be better and closer to Allah, but at the same time you're using the harami way too? First you cheated, then you're flirting around and actually intentionally berhias dengan niat to attract a non mahram (tabbruj), then you went out tak jaga batas pergaulan keluar berduaan dengan lelaki? — Girl ALSO needed the change lah, sebab niat tak menghalalkan cara bah. I don't mean the FL needed to drastically change into an entirely different person, but I wished she actually know 'batas' when menjalankan these kind of obviously wrong 'project'.

• Onto the characters and their characterization, SIGH, I genuinely couldn't like any of the characters, a lot of their dialogues and thoughts really continuously showed them as hypocrite people. Ayra and her constant holier-than-thou judgements, Zhaf and his contrasting advices towards his sister yet he's doing the same thing going out with Ayra, Iskandar voicing out his 'worries' about Ayra's unemployment and post marriage conditions (despite the fact that she's in a hostile work environment) YET still avoiding the marriage topic, and there's Farah, where she went absolutely upset and angry that Zhaf actually likes Ayra and started blaming Ayra for everything when she's the one that made her do all of those stupid things in the first place! Same with the side characters, Ayra's brother openly revealed Zhaf's 'bad' lifestyle hanya sebab he wanted to water down his 'good boss behaviour' at the office (despite how he doesn't mix his personal life?), which this is technically aib kot. Kenak semua orang judgemental bah, then at the end of the day no one really reflected over what they've done.

On top of that, I think this was done simply for plot convenient and to create drama, — apparently the characters' personalities changes from A to B so abruptly and sudden, and there's no show of progression on character development and it makes the entire story unpredictable. Tiba-tiba kawan makan kawan, dengki mendengki, gaslighting, then tiba-tiba lagik eh, bait lagik dengan sama dirik, but they suddenly became tone deaf and ignorant despite them being well aware of one another's feelings, everything tiba-tiba, it's a bit frustrating to read for me.

• The jump on plot, everything feels way too quick, only 24 pages in, there's already 3 seperate conflicts being spread out omto the reader, and not just that, important scenes pun macam laju and kenak cut short most of the time. And despite the quickness, there's also too much filler scenes and dialogues that I don't think contribute to the story at all - please leave the make over shopping scenes to film and dramas only, please. Tujuan cerita pun quite samar samar throughout the readings, a lot of the plot could actually be expanded better.

• This might be a me thing or I might look this in a wrong way, but a pet peeves of mine since it kept on being mentioned in the story is how the characters repeatitively called a person 'ustaz / ustazah' (in a negative way) just because someone showed a good muslim example and gave advices bersandarkan islam? Even the smallest benda baik yang diperkatakan pun tiba tiba the character labeled them as ustazah. Even if it was done playfully, and I know it wasn't necessarily 'bad', it is still such an odd thing sebab nya macam as if putting a stereotype onto a person, for being a normal regular muslim that knows about their own religion and its teachings?

• Lastly, why does the characters speak as if they're extremely old and andartu dan dah lanjut umur perkahwinan, when in fact they're sooo young though! The topics touched in the story were quite progressive, tapi bila pasal kahwin, eh tipikal dan tradisional nya.

Overall, it's a fun book to read, a lot of values juak with an interesting premise, but I wished some things were done differently. Clearly it wasn't my cup of tea, but if you like something fast to read, simple yet with a dramatic storyline, give this one a try though!

Disebabkan hipotesis & eksperimen mengarut Ayra & Farah, habis huru hara semuanya. Yang terjalin habis terlerai. Yang terlepas ikatan kembali bertaut. Emosi naik turun nak tunggu ke penghujung cerita.
Ayra Basheera, Farah Ilyana, Zhafri Adam, Iskandar, Johan.
