TEARS IN THE WIND! When she’s not fighting mysterious giant golems with her wind powers, AERO is the Shanghai-based architect LEI LING, who sometimes just wants to have dinner with her boyfriend in peace. But when her boyfriend springs a surprise, Ling discovers that her civilian life might be as perilous as her super hero life! Meanwhile, in our second story, AERO and WAVE test the limits of their water and air powers — and begin to unravel the mystery of the strange ties that bind them.
I am not surprised to see a villain that is following the old dragon lady formula; she reminded me already of Chinese female crime bosses from martial arts movies. After all, what can you expect when you have a comic that needs to be advertised by saying "The astonishing, awe-inspiring AERO"? And if she didn't give me massive Mary Sue vibes before she surely as hell does now as she apparently is able to bring down a “monster in the sky” by herself. Sure, she doesn't do it because it would destroy the beautiful city, so she has some morals, but considered that she mentions no human lives at all, you'd have to ask what those morals are. And considering how overpowered and over-skilled they presented her so far (without explanation) I wonder why she didn't just blow it out to the sea. After all Shanghai is a seaside city. And how did she know the "monster has a mistress? She straight up refers to her as a she. Does she know her and that she creates such monsters? And the air will tell her? How? It is not explained, and I am wondering how the air (except the smell) could tell her anything about where a specific person is. There are tons of air currents in such a big city. So how does it work? So is it Chi? Does the air carry her Chi? Is that it? And if the villainess can transform buildings into monsters, why not transform one into several and overwhelm Aero? Oh right, because I spend more time thinking about this than the author. But I can't help myself with something like this that begs so many questions and gives no answers and when I think about it, it makes even less sense. She can "feel the heartbeats of thousands of innocent people around" them… and last issues there were no innocents around them? Not to mention, is this building-monster also empty of people when it was created like the last one? If yes, then how many empty buildings are there in this Shanghai? And the villainess... well, I already called her a dragon lady and yet... Madame Huang, that is her name... and on her cheongsam there is a feng huang… not the worst name but a bit on the nose and speaking of that: She is EVIL!!! And crazy. And she wants to land her floating city on Shanghai and show those who resisted what sort of mercy they've earned themselves. The last time I have seen a villain that idiotic was in Avengers Axis. And Aero and her powers become even weirder and more unexplainable as the time goes on and she has air swords now. She can also feel the box in her boyfriend’s (why bother memorizing his name?) pocket? That is not air related, that is being clairvoyant! The whole thing with the man and the violin is one thing because they are moving visibly (even though it is still close to clairvoyance) but not a box in a pocket. And she stopped the violin melody by counteracting the air currents. So, she seems to know that her boyfriend wants to propose to her and... she doesn't want it? Or is she a control freak? Because with what was shown last issue that would fit. AND fits with what she does do here. She manipulates all this because she is not ready to hear him propose to her. Arrogant much? Or is this supposed to be considerate? Just let him speak and answer him! If it were me writing this story, I would make him break up with her because of her being a workaholic. because that is how this comes across. That and that her boss can call her on her private time and apparently that is fine. And the boyfriend even says he thought that she would leave the office in the office from now on. Aero comes across as pretty unlikeable so far. And that is at least something because up to now, I barely know her as a person, she seems more like a product than anything else. You don't see many flaws (or any depending on your interpretation), you get no character development, no real backstory, at least not shown, no nothing, not really. Sure, we get told that she learned from the past and lost too much. But I didn't see any of that so far. But maybe I would if the editors had decided to finish this Chinese based story run first before inserting another story into this. In the end too many new questions were raised: If Aero has new powers and new weapons how could Huang have taught her everything she knows? Or is this supposed to be explained by Huang being crazy? Allegedly crazy. Because then all she does to "hurt" Huang is a strong blast of air and that apparently makes her use her back-up plan. So Aero was her apprentice… in what? This here suggested Aero has new powers, so if her old were different why is she so skilled with her air powers? No idea in either case because the comic has no interest in explaining that and we switch to the story with Aero and Wave again. Come to think of it, one is Chinese and the other Filipino, and considered the propagandistic nature that I get from this character I do wonder whether this isn’t the same here. After all, why pair up these two? The two countries are not culturally close, we don’t know enough about their personalities (if they have any in Aero’s point), so why pair these up? And why do they speak the same language? And pairing them up seems to be done only via forced conflict with an outside source, aka Red Feather. I still have no idea why Wave doesn't just demand to clear her name or something. Pearl comes across as really unreasonable here and not even in a way that is understandable as so far Red Feather comes across as more reasonable than her. And Aero doesn't even try to calm anyone down she is making everything worse. And somehow Wave becomes stronger by working with Aero apparently. Do they mean the combination of their powers or do they mean that Wave got stronger because Aero is there? Sure, Aero stops Wave, when it is convenient for the story, but that’s it and even that seems to be there to only pair them up. And all Red feather was doing was taking Aero's weapons and in fact she is not even thrown out apparently, she is basically suspended. So, the comic contradicts itself. Red Feather is not even a jerk, it comes across to me as if the only justification here is that he is a man and they are women and in a story by Greg Pak that means that he is wrong, and they are right apparently. Sorry, but there is no reason in my mind for them to be this upset. In fact, women being unreasonably upset… could it be that this story is sexist against women without knowing it? Or is he just such a bad writer? After all, he doesn’t even seem to be able to keep powers in mind or do any research. You see, here it is stated that Aero can sense something in the air that she things is Triumph Division? But in the last story in Shanghai she could identify boxes in pockets and find people with her powers everywhere in the city. Sure, she gives me Mary Sue vibes, but at least keep it consistent or do a remake/reboot. And to prove to Red Feather that she is not messed up from the company that gave her powers (why not?) Wave wants to find them (how?) and thinks that is a good idea? To prove that she is not messed up she should not have attacked him and become so aggressive in the first place. From his perspective she acts pretty much as if she was controlled by that company. But we don’t get his point of view here and possibly never will. Not in this series, not with this author.
This issue continues to prove that Marvel style Super Heroes work with manga sensibilities added in. The backup story is okay, but the writing and art for the main story is definitely more than worth the cover price.
Again, the artwork is so gorgeous that I would absolutely want some as art in my house. I’m glad that they’re moving the story along in a natural pace with both aspects and think they’ve got 2 strong arcs going on.
And the plot thickens! Okay, we pretty much knew that they were going to throw more into the plot of Aero, but I'll admit that I like where it's going. I'm looking forward to reading more of it!
