The world has ended. A few have survived. This is their story. __________________________
Book 1:
Finding a friend in the apocalypse isn't easy, and for Jake Martin, it's been damn-near impossible. Life has become an endless trek for canned food, shelter, and avoiding those who've turned to killing for anything all while trying not to become a killer himself.
When Jake encounters Billy, an elderly wanderer on the highway to ruined Las Vegas, everything changes.
Book 2:
Jake, Billy, and the other survivors have come to settle in the mountains of Wyoming, fighting day in and out to establish a home for themselves in a near-empty world. Things are good at first—well, as good as they can be after the apocalypse.
But they get worse when a new band of survivors migrates to the very same mountains, desperate for a place to settle. More people means more hungry mouths, which means more sacrifices, and more people to learn to trust.
Book 3:
Having been bolstered with supplies sufficient to carry them through the winter, the survivors of the Jackson commune must now hunker down and endure the bitter Wyoming winter. But as they flourish, hungry eyes are set upon them throughout the west.
The leftovers of the US Military encamped in the last known surviving tent city, the Elysium Fields of Arizona, hear word of large number of survivors in Wyoming who have begun to rebuild civilization with plans for farming and real shelter.
Book 4:
Otto Warren's military force and the Wyoming Commune have come to a peaceful agreement. Jake will remain in charge alongside Warren's people, while Warren and his army seek more survivors throughout the Northwest. More strangers Jake isn't sure he can trust.
Two factions and their opposing ideologies about how to rebuild the world will collide in Jackson, Wyoming. Two unstoppable forces. Only one can remain, if they don't all destroy each other first. ______________________________________________________________________________________________

Well....How to begin? First the Book or the series was published a few weeks ago, Feb 7th, 2020. I stumbled upon it in my usual way looking at Apocalyptic stories. The first few pages got me really interested especially with the outbreak of "Corona Virus 19" in the news. Wow, talk about timing is everything! The foreward written by what's his face was kinda awkward, sort of a lot of backslapping about audiobooks and bro high fiving and the like but once you get through that the story takes off! To throw out some bullet points and absolutely no spoilers, let be begin by saying I finished the epic today which is a very good thing because reading it has affected my day to day existence. Last weekend I read from Sunday afternoon around 4:00pm to Monday morning at 3:50am. Do the math, 12 hours of solid reading. I was somewhere into Book 3 and I was getting physically sick from frequent adrenaline dumps! Monday morning I went grocery shopping and had trouble seeing. Everything was blurry, severe eye strain! So Readers be fore warned! This book will reel you in like none other. I'm somewhere near 400 plus books and only a few have had such a visceral gut punch to my psyche! Of all the authors I've read this guy is at the top of the list! You know all the dudes and some dudettes that write stories filled with blood and gore and what type of tricked out special ops rifle or handgun, the unavoidable usual 180 grain bullet traveling at 2600fps smacking someone's melon at 8,000 pounds of kinetic energy, bloody mist spiraling, yada yada? well that stuff is tastefully done in this story, as to not be a thing that bores the s*** out of you. But, there are super intense "cover your groin" passages that will leave you biting down hard! The characters in the book are so believable are so well developed, that you could pick them out on the street!!! The author does an incredible job of describing their emotions, their fears, desires to the point that each one of these characters male or female pop out as solid, real individual. It's almost as though these are not characters but actual people. It is a really bizarre feeling when you start to read and lose that outside observer, reading a great story, but actually start to feel as though you are "in"the story itself. A real "out of body" experience that tugs at you in a real sense. A few parts of the story were so profound, so utterly soul wrenching with feeling and despair, that I found myself weeping uncontrollably like some punk-ass bitch! I freely admit. What really freaked me out is the character "Amanda". As a Hispanic dude or Ese, I laughed my ass off at the depiction of this woman. The spanish words thrown in their conversation are spot on! Her mannerisms and physical attributes remind me of my first wife to a "T" Yikes! The other bizarre coincidence is that "Amanda" lives up in "Beaver, Utah" folks it's a real place only 45 minutes from my dwelling outside of St. George and it is indeed a small quaint town off the beaten path. The locations and their descriptions are all very real, which begs the question why Utah? I noticed the author lives in So Cal, but with his salty and colorful language I know that his Bishop would have him excommunicated from his LDS Ward in a heart beat!!! This was a real puzzler to me. The descriptions and language of the military guys are also spot on! Semper Fi! Now for my quick overall summary. After I read Books 1 and 2, I had to stop and say WOW! Wait a minute. This is not some far out story about the End of Days and a band of survivors. No! It is some dudes Master's Thesis either Sociology or Psychology on interpersonal and behavioural dynamics between groups and individuals during times of extreme depletion of natural resources, or Survivors: The Individual and Groups "How to Survive the Apocalypse" Yep, the reading was very very deep, especially when "Jake" gets on a roll! You can probably take out chapters, take out some quotes and passages and refer to them when you need counsel. Just ask the question, What would Jake, Gibs, Otis, Wang, Fred, Paps or all the others would say or do, and I swear to Holy Sweet Baby Jesus, you will find the answers to your questions in this series! I really want a sequel but I don't know if my body, mind and soul can take it! I feel wrung out but in a good way. HiJole! y Adios!
It is difficult to find a book so much rich that you cannot be bored with repetitions: these are the few it is recommended to reread, like this one. Thanks Joshua for the lessons, the entertainement and the thick characters that are here.
This is the best 99 cents I ever spent. I read a lot of books in th this genre and this is the best . The characters are well conceived and different then anything I have read previously. Many of these type of books are formulaic and most characters are in black and white. I have never read a book of this type where it is so difficult to guess what is coming next and more importantly who is the the good guy and Who is the villain. The author writes people in shades of grey till you don't know who even to root for.
This was an excellent series. The story line was conceivable, the characters easily identified in my imagination, the locations were well described and the tale unfolded logically. Not sure I could identify with continuing use of foul language, certainly from leaders, but it made for a thoroughly enjoyable read. Well done. Now I need to find the next Joshua novel.
I haven't laughed this hard in a long time; Gibs was by far my favorite character! I was crying laughing at the description of Fred in his too short shorts getting busted by Amanda trying to adjust. It was a solid series and I'm sad it came to an end!
Like many other reviewers, I was disappointed with this fourth installment. Several characters made outrageous, unbelievable decisions to advance the plot and what one of main protagonists did in the final quarter of the book was beyond frustrating. It was so irritating that it almost made me give up on the book.
In addition to this major gripe, the author once again continued to have a 9 year old child act and talk like adults and made the lead female protagonist so unlikeable, I was kinda hoping she didn't make it to the end. Finally, the author has a gift when it comes to metaphoring (is that a word?) or providing interesting, funny or uncanny descriptions that enable the reader to picture or feel a particular situation. I suspect he's worked really, really hard at this skill over his career, but in this book, it's over done. A full hour or two of the narration could have been cut out of a 22 hour listen, if he had of cut this back even by a quarter. As it was, it was too much and had me fast forward through large parts of the final half of the book. Sometimes there too much of a good thing.
On the positive side, there was a lot of good action and I'm glad the series ended in the way that it did. Others may differ, but the main protagonist was jerk, a tyrant and psychopath and I'm glad a few of the other main characters seemed to rebuff and walk away from him. As anti-heros go, the author made his so unlikeable, I'm glad he didn't get a happy ending.
I recommend if you listened to the first three books, but be prepared to be frustrated.
I have had this series in my library for quite some time and just hadn't got around to reading it (perhaps because of some negative connotation of the title in my mind). Then my eldest brother started telling me about this super audiobook series narrated by the great RC Bray that he was listening to that had him thoroughly engaged plus busting a gut laughing and I found I had the series - and started reading it.
First of all, this is a series of four books and these are not all short books. This took me a fair amount of time to read - and it wasn't because I wasn't enjoying myself.
Also, the series gets better as it goes along. The first and second books were good but the third and fourth books were great.
This is a post-apocalyptic tale with a double whammy starting with solar flare/coronal mass ejections and then the Plague hits. It's a tale of survivors, both good and bad and those in between.
The author does a great job with character development and descriptions of the different locales. I am familiar with the areas the story takes place in so that just made it more interesting to me.
I highly recommend this to readers that enjoy the post-apocalyptic genre. And my brother highly recommends the audiobooks narrated by RC Bray.
When I read the guest intro, my first thought was “How much did they pay this guy to write such OTT glowing praise?” But having read the first series of 4 books, I have started the fifth.
I thought it was supposed to end after 4 books, but wasn’t disappointed despite the percentage read on my Kindle seemed to take forever to go to the next percentage point, I was also pleased because the story line didn’t let up.
I don’t often read a book or series that long, because they have to be really good to keep me interested.
The author has done an excellent job with characters and concurrent story lines, and your perspective of who the heroes are shift with the story.
There is an excellent balance of storyline, conversation, action, and detail showing that Joshua could well be an experienced prepper. I hope we never need those skills because we won’t be able to go on YouTube to learn the skills we would need. There are some great concepts here, bit I won’t share them because I don’t want to provide any spoilers.
So here’s the thing. If you have COVID or its really bad weather and you want to curl up with a good bookm instead of watching Netflix and wonder what would happen after an EMF, or for some reason all of the utilities stopped working, give this book a read.
Having said that, I would not be surprised if it showed up on Netflix. It’s good enough IMHO.
Great series. A very adult post apocalyptic for those who do not want young adult. There were things missing like cows, chickens, or any wild animals besides rabbits & deer to hunt. Also, horses were missing as the best form of travel. There should be more than enough hunting and gardens to raid.
But...I realize the starving people drove the whole series. LOL on all the swearing, especially til the x marine. I laughed through the last book and was grossed out more than a few times.😝...still, I was married to an x con, used car salesman with manic depression and thought I heard everything. Nope😂. So worth the read if this does not bother you. I did not remove a star for any of that. It was for book two being a little slow, but mostly for book four having some people doing things out of character. No spoilers. An interesting, different post apocalyptic series that's a must read and a value also for the set. 😀 NO ZOMBIES , thank you Mr. Bayou. I will be reading more from you. 😷😷😷stay safe, stay home and read let this series take you to away 😺 cat😸
One of the many books I ‘read’ by listening. It is my habit to listen to a book when I’m driving or walking. As a many-hour commitment this series has seen me through many such drives and walks, though once lockdown began, fewer. When I started, the concept of a post-apocalypse was nothing but fiction. For a while I could hardly bear to listen, then it eased off. Thank goodness. It’s a great series, read wonderfully by RC Bray as always. Huge amounts of inventive swearing, and if you’re the prissy type this will no doubt, make you stop listening. Shame; words are just words, swearing just a social construct. It’s an absorbing tale, and I’m always a fan of the author that isn’t afraid to kill off well-developed characters far into the stretch of 4 long books. I am almost sad the books are done, though I devoured the last few hours in a hungry marathon keen to know the end. The author has left the door open for a new series, and if he does, I’ll be there to listen.
If you enjoy life in the post-apocalypse you are going to love Commune. You do need to be aware that this is not YA, this is full bore adult. The story will take you across the full landscape of humanity and human endeavor. The people that you will encounter are not always what you might expect. There are plenty of instances of tension and gunplay but there is also lots of love and laughter. This is a fully developed world in the aftermath of duel disasters with plenty of twists in the trials and tribulations of all our new friends that Joshua Gayou has brought to life. It's a monster of a read but you will still want more when you get to the end.
This series is really well written. Full, lively characters with disparate motivations, an excellent apocalypse setting, and clear character voices throughout. Even the 'narrator', Brian, one of the characters, has his own voice. The story itself is dark, light, and meandering - all the things one would expect after the apocalypse. It's full of hope, joy, friendship, and dark, anger-inducing sorrow. It's also not your average post apocalyptic story, either; you root for the bad guys as much as the good ones. It's all about perspective. Gayou delivers an epic tale here that the reader won't soon forget.
I've been a kindle unlimited subscriber for 8 years. I've got 600 books in my database that I've read thru that time. Sci-fi, dystopian, mystery, urban fantasy, non fiction.... Almost every genre except romance. I rarely take the time to write reviews because I generally can't think of enough words to be accepted as a review.
The commune is the exception. Talented, articulate writer who manages to weave a complex tale with solid character development. This author is the real deal. Looking forward to more from him
So if you like end of the world books but no zombies this is the series for you. Book 1 N two are written from chapters based on points of view of our main characters. Book 3 N four throw this away for standard story telling which made me dislike that decision. Books 3 N 4 devote a lot of chapters to characters I didn't care about, basically the enemy in book 4 which was set u at the end of book 2 and 3 and that Is Why this doesn't get 5 stars. I wanted to follow our main characters and learn more about them and so on.
This series is amazing. The story is so real. Not like the standard zombie ones. This suits the times we live in. This is already partially happening. I absolutely got so involved with reading this, that I actually had to force myself to put it down to go to bed at night. Only to pick it up first thing in the morning. I highly recommend this series. Read it you won't be sorry.
What a brilliant 4 book series. I can honestly say I haven’t been this in love with a series. It’s got everything you want, from very Intense individuals written so very well to finding love in the darkest hours. There’s fighting for your life and the ones you love. It’s just very well written. I can’t find the words to articulate jus this much I love it.
I read this book at the start of a very surreal time in the world, the onset of the COV-19 pandemic. The story had a virus invade the world, forcing people to overcome the loss of reason, and the acceptance of violence to survive. Fiction is not that far from fact, we need to be more aware.
You are going to need a scorecard to keep up with who is who and how they are related as this is a very long tale, Characters you become invested in die .The gritty realities of life where might mostly means the right and justice is whatever the right says it is.
This saga is worth the read. The author gives plenty of disasters and drama for those who enjoy the genre, but doesn't rely on constant blood and guts. There is a story, filled with characters that have been so well developed that you feel you know them. I cheered some of them on, hated some and was sad for others. Well done.
Best damn story I have read in awhile the characters and their back stories was extremely well written I just want to say write more, another book about them.
You should continue with Gibbs and pinch and Alan, their adventure and the return home along with the characters in the bowl as what has happened to them.
In the scene between the 2 groups, the group that looked the hardest and most dangerous actually wasn’t. But the supposed survivors on the mountain became murders and almost blasphemous using God’s Word to cover their bloody plots. Between Jake and Amanda, who can tell who was more of a bloody lunatic. I ended being disappointed with their group.
A lot of characters to keep track of and a lot of action. I really enjoyed reading this series. I would of liked a happier ending but I was not totally disappointed. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys reading about a life following an apocalypse. The world is a crazy place and no one is safe.
The forward for this book is silly and worthless , so ignore it. The book is well written and well edited. It is different than most apocalyptic books in that it looks at many characters in depth. Not much real survival info but more than most. It is a good story that tuples your interest.
Great storyline, but, the author obviously believes everyone speaks filth when they talk. T bomb was every other word much of the time. Disgusting phrasing and cussing the rest of the time. I skipped over reading a good fourth to third of the book because of it.
I lived in Wyoming and enjoyed and appreciated the accurate description of the terrain. I felt Jake’s character was interesting but not fully developed with more background information. I feel this would be a great movie if developed and cast correctly.
Characters were well developed and realistic. Excessive cussing throughout, but it moved the story ahead. When I came to the end I was sad, but wondered if the ending means another series. I sure hope so.
I've read A LOT of.books over the years and hands down this series neat them all. The characters alone were such that you feel like you know each one personally. The story line was.believable, enriched, and draws a person in to the plot. Hands down the BEST!!
Detailed to a fault for us readers that enjoy a great storyline. Characters who accomplished tasks without a cape. Passages contained within the book will remain in my head forever. Great read. Thank you!
