It’s been seven years since the FIRE virus devastated the globe, leaving most of the world population decimated. From the wreckage, infected and non-infected survivors emerge to find their new places in the world.
Since rising after the infection, Max and Clara abscond to the British Columbia wilderness to live in peace, away from the rest of the world. Their life is hard, but happy, until outside forces tear their family apart in efforts to find a cure for FIRE.
Max and Clara must leave their home and once more go against the people who consider them no more than ‘zombies’. With the help of new and old friends, will they be able to finally overcome humanity's prejudice against them?
Dead Aware is an apocalyptic novel written mostly from an infected point of view. Motivated by love, this is a story of death, adventure, acceptance…and zombies
Eleanor Merry was born and raised in beautiful Vancouver, BC and still lives there with her tiny human and her fiance. The offspring of a fairy queen and an undead warlord, she was brought up with an appetite for terror and beauty.
When she isn’t writing, she is a voracious reader with eclectic tastes which tends to lean towards horror and the twisted, however is known to indulge in dirty romances on the side. In all genres, nothing is off limits and she looks forward to sharing more of her own twisted and strange thoughts with the world.
After reading and really loving the characters of Max and Clara in A Zombie Journey I had put this book straight on my Want To Read Wishlist! So as soon as I realised it was available, I had to buy it, and read it straight away. The cover fits well with the others of the series, and features a young girl on the cover who I would say is Joan.
The book picks up where Clara has given birth and she and Max have chosen to call their daughter Joan. Joan has not experienced the bad in the world, those that would be against them because they are infected and are different. She has not come in to contact with other infected people, or the less aware zombies either. In fact, she has only her parents for company since they isolated on an island, thinking it safer to just keep away from everyone. They think it is important to remain in hiding as if those that do experiments like those scientists and officials that had Clara before where to realise Joan’s existence, they would more than likely want her and Clara. The trouble is Joan is a lively child who wants to explore and no longer viewed as a baby. When her father gives in and allows her to accompany him to the main land they are both seen by three infected men. Max has a very uneasy feeling about the men and quickly returns to the safety of the island. This upsets Joan as he had taught her how to set traps and she had wanted to check them but he insisted they go back home without checking them. Joan of course being a bit rebellious secretly sneaks off and makes her way to the main land to check the traps and walks straight into the three men who want to sell her to a military base with Doctors. They will get good money for her, and that’s all they can see. The book then tells the story of Max and Clara finding their daughter gone, their boat gone and having to make their way to the main land in an attempt to find her. They soon uncover tracks and see she is no longer alone. When they find out where she is being taken. They know they will need help to get their daughter back. So, they return to old friends who are like themselves, who have made a community together with some uninfected.
There’s lots of hints about what is going to happen and links back to the time when Clara was held in the medical facility. Is it time the “dead aware” made a stand? Can Clara, Max and a few friends really rescue their daughter?
I loved the return of Max and Clara as well as learning about the new character of Joan too. There’s a return of some of my favourite characters from earlier in the series. There’s lots of action in this book and it has quite a fast reading pace, which I loved. I had thoughts about where things might go regarding a possible new leader in a certain community and though I wasn’t totally right I was really happy where Eleanor took the story and community leadership. This honestly is one of those books, in fact its one of the series I could talk for ever about! Some things seem resolved, but one thing is for sure the uninfected still have the mentality of killing the “zombies”. The Uninfected don’t see the different zombies. They don’t recognise the “dead aware infected” as any different to the mindless, flesh eating variety. Will that attitude ever change? Will there be more trouble for the dead aware community?
My immediate thoughts upon finishing this book were that the more I read of this Dead Aware series & world, the more I love it. Definitely looking forward to reading more.
Summing up, well I love this series and am really looking forward to reading more and am (im)patiently waiting for the next book already!
4.5 stars rounded up to to 5. For me it's unusual to rate a book 5 stars that isn't a total bloodbath. First, I'll recap the story then explain my reasoning. This story is set many years after the first book. Clara and Max's child, Joan, is now six years old. They have decided to live in seclusion. Joan is a spit fire and very stubborn. She wanders off alone, gets kidnapped, and eventually ends up in the same testing facility from book 1. Max and Clara meet up with old friends on a mission to save their child. I love how characters from the first book and Vagrant Youth are weaved into this storyline. Its not necessary to read Vagrant Youth before this one, but it definitely makes the overall experience better. Now, as to why I rated a book that isn't my typical type of read so high. I set the book down after I read it, thinking about my review. Here's what I came up with. I'm afraid to even use the word Zombie in this review. In this book we learn that it's a derogatory term that insults the undead. The way one of the human characters reflects on how people were prejudice against her when she was homeless touched me. People are people. Undead, homeless, different colors. Still people. I'm not prejudice against anyone, but in the book I should be rooting for the humans who aren't affected, right? Nope. Wrong. Infected. Undead. Still people. Infected are still people. I should be rooting for the nicest people, which turns out to be the infected ( mostly. And the not infected that reside with them) . So not only is this book a good story with very likeable characters, it also teaches an important rule of life. People are people. Be kind to one another. So simple, yet so beautiful.
I'm very happy to call myself a Zombie Lover, I'm absolutely hooked on this series and all the fantastic characters within the Dead Aware World that Eleanor Merry has created. I've never read any books quite like these, they're uniquely different and that's why I love them.
In this book we catch up with Max, Clara and their daughter as they try to make a life for themselves away from the rest of the world. I've gotta say Max and Clara have an Epic romance it's clear how much they love one another.
I adored little Joan and her curious nature, she was always thirsty for knowledge about the world. Never really understanding the perils her inquisitive mind could get her into.
I liked the interaction from some familiar characters in this book and the introduction of some new ones, both human and infected. I have massive love for Bear, I'd love more from him as the series progresses.
I'm already excited for more from the Dead Aware World.
Sometimes I forget…. Dead Aware 2-No Place Like Home by Eleanor Merry was simply wonderful!! Joan, well, what can you say about a 6 year old zombie? She was a very engaging character. I can truly say that I loved almost all of the characters…especially Cords, who might just be what the future is made from. Bear...he was amazing. The farther I read, I just kept thinking, "There's no way this is going to turn into a happily ever after ending...but, sometimes I forget that this is not real life, only the amazing imagination of Eleanor Merry, and in great minds...all things are possible. :-) I absolutely cannot wait to see what Eleanor Merry comes up with next.
A stunning storyline is exactly what you get with the Dead Alone series. That plus the most amazing, mostly loveable, very human zombie characters. And a bunch of not so loveable non-zombies. There’s plenty of action when Max and Clara’s six year old daughter is kidnapped for a lab researching a zombie cure. It was a pleasure to read about old characters as well as new. Max and Clara still make me sigh. It was interesting to watch cultural issues played out in their world. Even an apocalypse can’t stop the “isms”, just alter the parameters. Try this series. Truly you won’t be disappointed.
This is my second book by this author. Oh wow. This book is really taking me back to the first book(5 star). Max and Clara are back. Guy and a cast of characters help them go get their daughter Joan back. This was so well done just like the first. I was immediately transported back into that world and I really enjoyed it. I need to read the rest of this series ASAP. I highly recommend. I love the way this author turns zombie fiction on its head.
Home is where the heart is, even if you are a FIRE virus survivor. I'm enamored with the dynamic between these afflicted parents and their daughter. The view into what it would be like to grow up in an world that is a shadow of itself is frightening and eye opening. I'm recommending these books to everyone I know !
Dead Aware 2: No Place Like Home by Eleanor Merry is such an awesome story to read. This is book number two in this awesome series writen by a brand new author for me to read. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about horror.

Best zombie book I have had the pleasure of reading! I'm hooked from the first page right until the last! Eleanor has a way of telling a story without dragging it on and still keep you in suspense! Her words grab you and pull you in right till the end!
