Hearts of Stone #3

Seduced by a Beast

Rate this book
He wants me.

And this male is used to getting whatever he demands. The only problem is I don't want to be bothered. Especially not hot and bothered.

But he's not getting the hint. He thinks I'm his and that he needs to claim me. If I allow myself to ask what that means it'll probably add a couple of letters to my OCD.

My disorder should deter him, like it has most people. I just won't stick around long enough to find out. I've been given my freedom and I have no intention of giving it away to this alien.

No matter how handsome, strong, and kind he is. Just because he makes me feel things doesn't mean they're real.

Or are they?

Miranda Bridges began sneaking romance novels as a teenager and did not confess to reading them until she became a legal adult. After years and years as a voracious reader she woke up one day with a story in mind. She decided to write it down in order to silence her imaginary friends, but they’ve grown in number and have gotten louder. When she is not reading, writing, or drinking coffee she is taking care of two princesses who are of a reading age. Needless to say Miranda is still hiding romance books around the house, but now some of them have her name on the cover.

Ok until the end

So, I’ve been liking this series more than the sister series. I was excited about this book and it started off really well. That being said, it was a disappointing final quarter of the book. The part where the fmc suddenly understands why she’s OCD adds literally nothing to the plot. I would have been more into her nightmares being helped by her mate, but we get the revelation and then nothing. No further discussion needed, I guess? Then the last conflict was so ham handed. I mean, the entire thing read as: shoot, this book is too short and the publishing deadline is looming so wapow, some extra pages for ya. The epilogue was dumb as well. Basically, it’s a hey reader, this is an hea, don’t say I never gave you anything. Like? Why? Just make a better ending. I will still try the next in the series, but this author is going to need to win back some of my interest.

*Raging fire of disgust for final conflict resolution*

I recommend. Story was overall okay. I had higher expectations for it when it started but I quickly started losing hope for the characters.

The heroine was kind with an intriguing backstory. However, she was somewhat weak willed when interacting with the hero. And her weakness had nothing to do with her OCD and everything to do with her inability to refuse the hero.

The hero was... misleading. He starts off as friendly, seductive, and amsusing but he very quickly evolves into a sexually manipulative ass (or maybe it's just him showing his true colours). Whenever the heroine expresses her doubts about him or their situation, he decides the solution is to sex her up.

Still, I would have given the story a 4 star rating if not for the final conflict and ending.

Ahhh... the final conflict. I have so many issues with it, but let us stick to the basics. The hero becomes even more of a deaf, stubborn manipulator and decides to throw cruel-asshole-who-won't-listen-or-trust-anything-the-heroine-has-to-say into the mix. This completely contradicting a promise he made to the heroine just a few chapter prior. Because, hey why not?

The final conflict was intense. It involved the heroine almost literally reliving her nightmare and past trauma. This could have led to interesting dilemmas and fighting and conversations as the characters search for a solution. Instead, what do we get? You guessed it: a weak apology from the hero who then sexes up the heroine. The subject is then dropped and the story ends. I'm sorry but sex is not a miraculous fix-all. Especially not when the hero treats the heroine like shit on earth. Sex doesn't make that miraculously disappear. What? Does the hero's d*ck wipe the heroine's memory or something? I get it, we shouldn't hold unnecessary grudges, but the hero deserved to grovel for a while longer and the heroine deserved a proper apology. I don't mean to sound vindictive, but I genuinely believe the hero deserved to struggle just a little bit more. Not everything should be handed to him on a silver platter thanks to his apparently magical d*ick. If you read this book, which despite everything, I recommend you do, you'll understand what I mean. I am still frustrated about the ending.

The hero is the villain in this story. He did an unforgivable thing to the heroine but did he apologise? No. He never did. Just like what he did throughout the book, he sexually manipulated her until she forgives him.

Sorry not sorry, dear but fucking someone in a grass is not an apology. If anything it affirms what the heroine believed in the beginning—that she’s nothing more than a warm body for him to fuck.

Belvaire and Jeanine

Belvaire is determined that Jeanine is his Selina. However, Jeanine thinks no one could love her or want to be with her because of her OCD issues.

They have a rocky road especially when he thinks she betrayed him. I would've made him suffer more. It was nice to see Jeanine get her happiness after what she's been through.

Loved it

These alien men can be pretty frustrating but it all worked out in the end. I really did enjoy this one I only wish I didn't have to wait so long for the next book I can't wait to read about Scarolette's sister. This entire series has been very good I would highly recommend it but if you have never read any of her work before I would recommend starting with the previous series which introduces us to the gargoyle people anyways check it out I'll be patiently waiting for the next one

This book was written from a single perspective, which was that of the human female’s, and not back-and-forth between the male and female. I found this format to be a breath of fresh air from the usual books with dual perspectives.

Written in first person by Miranda Bridges, Seduced by a Beast is book 3 in The Hearts of Stone series, and follows the Boraq alien Masse (King) Belvaire and his human mate Jeanine. This book picks up after the Dravian and Yalat war in The House of Kaimar series, and after attack from another Boraq tribe in book 2. The Boraq were allies to the Dravians, and played a key role in helping them win the war against the Yalat. In exchange for their help, the Dravians gave the Boraq several unmated human women, Jeanine being one of them.

Jeanine was studying accounting at the Hays University in Missouri, which was where the Dravians abducted her. She had learned to speak the Boraq's language fluently, so there were no language barriers. Jeanine had a bad case of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) which manifested itself in even numbers, obsessive counting to four, and the compulsion to twitch her fingers. She experienced nightmares since she was a child, shortly after entering the foster system, which were a result of her witnessing her father kill her mother (after he discovered her affair) in front of her as a child. Her mind locked that memory away in an attempt to protect her from the trauma, but it manifested in finger tapping and counting. After the Yalat war, she was one of the women sent to Sulrim. Shortly after arriving on the planet, the women were forced to make their way through the jungle to the village in order to test their will and strength, which Jeanine survived. She also befriended the skatnar (a creatur Sacred to the Boraq who Makayla named Shadow), which was a cross between toothless from How To Train Your Dragon and a cat. The humans were taken to serve one of 3 roles: wife, breeder or slave. At the claiming ceremony, Jeanine was not chosen by a Boraq, and wound up in the role of a slave, serving an older Boraq couple named Urehn and Ghita. Ghita was disabled, but treated Jeanine more like a friend than a slave. After Masse Jaxar declared that all the humans were free in book 2, Jeanine continued to serve the Boraq couple, until Belvaire showed up.

Belvaire was the Masse (King) of the Northern tribe, visiting his ally after the southern tribe (with all the humans) was attacked by the tribe from the west in book 2. He happened upon Jeanine while she was retrieving water from the stream, and knew from the moment he saw her that she was his heartmate. So he made a deal with Masse Jaxar for the rights to pursue Jeanine. Unfortunately, Belvaire had trust issues, which lead to his reluctance of opening his heart and allowing himself to fall in love. His mother repeatedly had affairs and his father always welcomed her back. Naturally, he was disgusted with his father's weakness and his mother's betrayal. Both of which made Belvaire blind and easily manipulated. Belvaire was the one who brought the initial infected humans to Sulrim, making him a responsible party to the massive loss that the Boraq experienced.

Boraq's were Gargoyle-like aliens that lived in the jungles of the planet Sulrim. They were seven feet tall with wings and a tail. Their dark gray skin, the color of night, had a purple undertone, kind of like an eggplant. From the moment of their birth, every male was born with a heart encased in stone. The female's heart beats freely, calling to their other half. It is a song that can only be echoed by the male destined to be bound to her. When the male hearts hear the song, the stone barrier cracks and disintegrates, leaving the male’s heart free to answer. It is known as the "shattering.” Once they marry, it’s for life, and the only way a marriage can be undone is if a male finds his mate during the shattering. (Basically, their heart doesn't start beating until after they have sex with their heartmate.) However, that hadn't happen since the mating instinct had long died, along with most of their women from an illness brought to their planet by a previous batch of human servants. The illness killed most women and children, leaving the Boraq skeptical of all humans.

Jeanine was Belvaire's one true heartmate, verified by the shattering. The couple officially had sex in chapter 8, at the 46% mark, which was the perfect sweet spot. I read this genre of books specifically for the raunch. Delaying sexual intercorse anytime after the 48% mark is like dangling the cheese so long it molds. The author didn't make us wait too long, and the sex scenes were fire.🔥🔥🔥 While Jeanine was a beautiful girl that attracted a lot of male attention, her OCD coupled with her reluctance of spreading her legs often pushed his away, leaving her as an untried virgin. After a lot of pursuing and persuasion, and the fact that Belvaire could literal die without it, Jeanine finally gave in and allowed him to pop her cherry. Admittedly, it was the spiciest thing I've read in a while. 🔥🔥

Before the shattering, someone named Rozak infiltrated the village and kidnapped Charlotte, Scarlett's twin sister. It is still unclear which tribe Rozak was a member of, if any. Belvaire pledged his loyalty to Jaxar and vowed to return with warriors to help retrieve the human female (presumably in the next book). After returning to his own village, much drama unfoldex when Jeanine befriended Erroken and Belvaire's cousin used that as a way to manipulate Belvaire. So yeah, we never got to the part where they saved Charlotte because the chapters were instead filled withvBelvaire accusing Jeanine of being unfaithful and treating her like shit. She forgave him WAY too easily, in my personal opinion, but I digress. 🙄

My biggest pet peeve with this book was Jeanine and her OCD. But only because it hit a little too close to home for comfort. My husband has OCD, and his obsessive compulsive tendencies drive me bat-shit crazy. So when I read a book to escape, only to be met with the same irritations, it's far from soothing. Don't get me wrong, I love the shit out of him, but yeah, he's a lot to handle. 🫣😅 My other pet peeve was the lack of communication. Jeanine could have saved them both from all the drama had she just TOLD Belvaire about what transported between her and his cousin inside the gem tent. But no, her own insecurities got in the way and made the situation so much worse. 🙄😕

So far, this series is worth the read, if this genre of books is in your wheelhouse. It had the perfect balance of adventure and romance. I can't wait to dive in to the next book of the series. 🫶

I've read the two previous books and liked them well enough. The mental health aspect was refreshing for this genre and I was looking forward to seeing where the book went. But once I got about 87% of the way through... I lost all hope. Was so put off by the author essentially making the character live out her childhood trauma at the hands of her "heart mate", but she easily forgives him after he fucks her in the grass. Excuse me?! No.

The writing and editing of this novel great, with few if any typos that I caught in the ARC version. The world building of this novel was just as good as the previous novels in this series, with the alien village culture being richly and vibrantly drawn. The characterization in this novel was top-notch, with the heroine of this novel being a very different and distinct woman from the heroine of the previous novel in this series, and the hero also being a different type of character from the previous novel's hero. I will admit that I enjoyed the heroine of the previous novel in this series more, but that is because my favorite heroine type is dominant alpha heroines. The heroine of this novel was still a quite sympathetic character, and I am so glad that the author included a heroine with OCD in this series. I always like it when the heroine of a romance author is struggling with some form of mental illness. Yay representation! The development of the romantic relationship between the hero and heroine of this novel was natural, organic, and frankly, swoony. The plot and pacing was exciting and fast paced, with a lot of plot happening in this book and me rapidly turning pages because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. There are plenty of adventure elements in this book. The angst in this novel was high, but I did not find it irritating because the stakes in this novel were also very high. Unfortunately, the heroine in this novel really struggled with her self-worth, and that was hard to read. This novel uses the Mars Needs Women trope and the Fated Mates trope. The form of the Fated Mates trope used in this novel was my favorite form, which contains the aspect where one or both characters are fighting against fate. A delicious whiff of the Enemies to Lovers trope. The plot, pacing, characterization, and development of the romantic relationship rates between four to five stars, and the world building rates three stars, with a final rating of four stars. This novel ends on a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that is a big plus to this series, and all this author's work that I have read so far. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy exciting sci-fi romances with more alien heroes. I will definitely be buying myself a keeper copy of this novel.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Overall I enjoyed the book till the last 95%. The heroine was interesting with her OCD and the insecurities that come with it. I also enjoyed the hero even with his arrogance which at times were actually kinda funny or charming. BUT, The last conflict has me reeling and frustrated with the ending.

While I usually don't condone grudges, the way the hero treated the heroine because of a misconception, made me want him to work for his forgiveness. The heroine goes through a situation that is similar to her childhood trauma with the hero. The hero is told the heroine has run off with another of his tribe and he falls for it due to his insecurities in his relationship. Even though she told him the night before this all went down she loved him. But I was totally ok with that, because I figured he would find out, and then the groveling would commence. But what we got was a half-assed apology and he uses sex to get her to forgive him.

As mad as I am at the hero for using sex to gain forgiveness. I am just as mad that the heroine for just accepting it. She gets "overwhelmed" by his touch and she forgives him because he does amazing things to her body. I know she loves him but the trust she gave him is pushed back in her face. I know it is just a book and the author can write however she wants, I can't help feeling disappointed. Not only did the hero not trust her, choosing to believe the words of someone else, he didn't even try to find evidence of her guilt or hear her side of the story when he found her. I think he deserves the silent treatment for a while and should try to earn her trust and forgiveness back.

*I don't mean to be vindictive. It just really made my heartache when he didn't trust her. I know she wasn't overly on board with the relationship at first but they grew as a couple as the story progressed. I wanted to see his character to acknowledge the hurt he caused and grow to understand the love she spoke of wanting. I still like this couple and would still recommend the book. because it does have a happy ending. It was just a happy ending that I thought came too quickly (imo).

Good until the hero turns into the worst kind of manipulator by using the FMC's desire to be loved to basically force her to stay with him after he full on abuses her.

I was so surprised by the last 1/4 of this book because this is a good series and I was excited to see a female lead without the more obvious/traditional "strength" characteristics that the aliens valued so much in the previous two FMCs. The male lead was great and it was fun to read. Some issues, like for a story that makes OCD so essential to the plot, the author didn't seem to have a good grasp of how it works. This is particularly true when Jeanine remembers the "origin" of her compulsive behaviors. The logic behind the reveal and the link to the FMC's compulsions is totally ridiculous. Honestly, it would have brought the story up a full star if
SPOILER-

---her night terrors were related to her time in foster care in general versus the whole "repressed memory" nonsense. OCD is common in the system because it is partially an attempt to manage anxiety by exerting control over a situation you feel powerless in (like a kid in foster care). The dramatic semi-psychotic break was unneeded and flattened the character rather than providing her with more depth

But all of that could have been overlooked if not for the ending. WTF? Ok, he thinks she cheated and is mad, fine. But he found her with a serious head injury and about to be raped and then marched her for hours with no food/water and left her BOUND by herself with no medical care. That is 1000% abuse. That is not love. He then ignored her desire for space and physically forced her back to the village with him. But he "admitted" to loving her so, no big? She didn't forgive him, she was pregnant and injured and overpowered and he promised her everything she told him she hoped for. That is exactly how manipulative abusers take advantage of vulnerable people.

4 1/2 stars!

This story and series is written for mature readers only (18+ years old) due to subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some including adult language, steamy intimate scenes and violence such as abduction / kidnapping, fighting with some to the death, murder, sabotage, betrayal, etc. and contains a theme about dealing with anxiety and OCD.

While this could probably be read as a stand-alone, I highly recommend it be read in series order for maximum reader satisfaction and to prevent spoilers as there are reoccurring characters and an overall storyline arc. The stories also start a little before the end of the previous story, meaning that it backs up to an event already covered, but from the impacted heroine’s POV.

There are a few grammatical errors (piece vs peace, etc.), but most are easy to interpret. Jeanine is a human female that was taken from earth and was “claimed” by a couple to assist with certain household chores since the female had an infirmity. Despite being freed to choose how she would like to serve the tribe, she decides to stay and assist what has became her friends.

Belvaire is a Masse for the Northern tribe and he has come to visit to make an offer of peace and to form an alliance with the Southern tribe. Then he spots Jeanine and he approaches her but she rebuffs him. He will not be discouraged and goes to the Southern Masse for “permission” to court her as she is his heartmate and will become his Massela. Jeanine is not interested in being anyone’s heartmate, as she is broken and worthless without her rituals to calm her anxiety.

Unfortunately it looks as if he will not go away until he can prove it one way or the other, but what happens if the shattering doesn’t happen and she gets her hopes up ... nope, not going to happen ... or is it?

Belvaire is the King of a tribe to the north of Jaxar’s that has come to negotiate a peace and an alliance. While in the village, he sees Janine and feels that she is his heartmate. Janine has OCD and has carved out a life here and doesn’t want any man. That includes the devastatingly handsome Masse of the northern tribe. Fate ain’t gonna give her a choice.

Of the 3 books I’ve read in this series so far, this was my least favorite. That’s not to say I didn’t like it, just not as much as the first two. I think part of the issue, for me, was that the first half of the book went by so slow and we were stuck in Janine’s OCD head - not a fun place to be. I think that’s probably what the author had intended but it didn’t do much, for me, to become involved with the character. I couldn’t really connect with her. It just made the push and pull between the two main characters painful to read. The storyline did pick up and the 2nd half of the book was a more enjoyable read for me. My favorite quote in the book? I am convinced that all males, from all planets, from all galaxies are dumbasses periodically. haha.

I would recommend this book, I just don’t think it’s as enjoyable as the other 2 so far. And I still heartily recommend this series to fans of this genre of romance books.

I recently discovered Miranda Bridges. Like completely stumbled upon her works in a Facebook group, I think it was in “Non Ruby Recs”, which if you’ve never heard of- is a group formed by people who love Ruby Dixon’s work but want new author recommendations.

So that alone sold me because I love Ruby Dixon! So I downloaded one of her books, and then another, and then another and then messaged her to beg for an advanced copy of this book because guys- I Am HOOKED.

She’s so intricate and detailed. And you need that with SciFi romance because you have to create a world that the reader has to live in to enjoy the story. And ugh did I ever!!

This was book 3 or 4 in this particular series (no joke, I’ve read so many in a row that I can’t remember!!). And HIGHLY recommend reading the others first so you can appreciate the Easter Eggs hidden throughout the book but if you don’t- it’s still an amazing standalone!!

If you need an escape into a world that resembles nothing around you and keeps you riveted to your Kindle or whatever you have...GET. THIS. BOOK!!!

I can’t wait to see who we read about next!!

I was hoping this would be Scarlett's sister Charlotte’s book but it wasn't. Now I'm not saying this book didn't hit it out of the park because it did.
Jeanine was a slave per the Masse’s decree but she still enjoys Ghita's company. Jeanne has OCD it was taken care of on earth with medication but on an alien planet where meds are not available. Not so much.
Belvaire is the Masse from the northern territory and is visiting, he is trying to convince Jaxar to work together against a common enemy. But he got more than he expected. He knew Jeanine was special when he first saw her.
Belvaire and Jeanine's relationship was bumpy from the start, they had to fight through her OCD, and some misunderstanding.
I enjoyed this book (and this series). It would seem to be a human female and kidnapped and an alien race and given to another,r would make you scared for your life. But these women took to it with bravery and took to their new life better than I would.

Another great addition to the series. Really liked Jeanine and mostly like belvair. (Up until the end) However, I feel irritated by a few things. 1) I loved how possessive he was of her, and hoped and looked forward to a “save her scene”. Kill anyone who hurt her, and be super psycho and crazy doing it. I felt robbed by the way that played out. 2) I hate the way he treated her after that and can’t believe as innocent (virgin) as she was when coming to him and as protective as he was of her through out the book, that he would 1, believe that BS, and 2 hurt her both physically and emotionally. He didn’t treat any of her wounds and then had her tied up, hurt and exhausted. She was freaking knocked out twice and doesn’t have a healer look her over? This didn’t seem believable to me. 3) she forgave him way too soon and he didn’t grovel nearly enough. I wanted him to feel broken and much more remorseful, begging her on his knees and doing some crying himself.

Jeanine and Belvaire for the win!

I have to love a story that features a heroine with OCD! Either the author did hella research on it, or she has it too. I do, and even if this got me first into the story, what came after just solidified my compulsion to read it straight through. I mean, Belvaire had many arrogantly douche bag moments, but he does redeem himself. This story pulled me right from the start. The plot was engaging, the characters were easy to connect with, and there was plenty of action interspersed throughout the whole thing. The twist that popped up was intriguing and I liked how it was handled...but not right away....at first I thought it was going to be a different story ending altogether. I'm glad it all got worked out! I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, maybe find out what happened to Charlotte?

What the heck happened at the end of this book?! She needed to leave Belvaire behind for a while and not forgive him so easily. What an a-hole! And the whole situation was just illogical so the fact that he and his two main warriors bought into it was just annoying. But, if you want to sell it then make him freaking grovel. I want him to be absolutely physically sick over what he did and have to win her back. His "apology" just came across as manipulative and her almost immediate forgiveness made me want to scream.

Before that though, I liked the characters and the story. Overall, I still liked it. I just wished the path to resolution for the big conflict between Jeanine and Belvaire could have been different.

Hearts of Stone favorite

This is my favorite book in the Hearts of Stone series so far. It just proves that you should underestimate the The quiet ones. Also what I like about bridges series is that she doesn't ignore everyday issues. I know a lot of authors will finally put an average healthy woman in their books. Only then they give them issues with their weight that the man has to help them get over.
Bridge did something different she gives us a woman with mental health issues and shows how she copes on a planet without meds and where she feels even more anxiety.
I love this story.

Really great read!!

This book is really a great and funny read! I really love the way the characters all come together even showing how this is going on during times of things that was going on elsewhere in the prior books. I really love the Jeanine character in this. She is very strong despite the OCD and the revelation of why she has the OCD really brings it all together. I love the way she keeps her Masse in line. All in all a great book leading on to the next. Outstanding author!

Best one yet

I somehow stumbled on this series and I'm so happy I did. It's the perfect heartache action packed dirty romance. Reminds me a bit of the Ice Barbarians series. This one particularly pulled at my heart strings and many mixed emotions. I went from mad to sad to happy in 2 seconds. Although I wish she didn't just give in so easily at the end. Maybe for me, trust in a relationship is a huge thing and I wouldn't be so forgiving so quickly. Wish the ending was slighty longer. Still, it's well written and a great series.

DNF.

AVERAGE ALIEN ROMANCE STORY, would have given it a 3 stars if I finished.
Heroine doesn't want to be anyone's heartmate. Is it the fear talking? Maybe.
She's a virgin, and she's also got OCD. Maybe it's because now OCD is widely known that nobody will consider you a freak and make fun of you (I won't...I don't know about the kids out there) THAT I don't find it a big deal.

Hero was cute and warm, he's basically a gentleman and very persistent.
Other than that, I guess it was just too sweet and drama free that I felt a little bored.

This book touches on some heavy topics, like past trauma and having an OCD disorder. The FMC is meek, quiet and tentative in a lot of what she does because of this. While I loved the romance between her and the MMC, I didn't like how easily that major conflict at the end just was swept under the rug. I would have liked to see him feel a little bit of the pain that she felt from his rejection. That said, this book was overall a decent read and right around 3.5/4 stars in rating. I loved that Shadow made a reappearance. She seriously is like a baby whisperer!

Fantastic Sci-FI Romance
by and1515

This new book by Miranda Bridges is absolutely fantastic an worth
screaming and shouting hip hip hooray.
Belvaire knows that Jeanine is his but it won't be easy for him to
convince her that he's right and wow the waltzing these two do around
each other is captivating and tantalizing easy as one, two, three...

*I am a beta reader for this author and read this book before publication and copy was finalized*
I really liked this book. From the very first chapter, I was hooked. I loved Jeanine and her character was so unique. Her backstory and her OCD just gripped my heart and I empathized with her so much. Belvaire showing up was absolutely great. I loved the banter between them and their interactions were everything. I’m just really excited to see where this story will go next.

Captivating

A fated mates alien obsession. Toss in a quirky human female and this book is the complete recipe for all the feels. The author told the story well. Though there were quite a few loose ends left untied, it didn’t matter because the main couple took center stage and kept it. I was captured from the very first sentence. I’m going to read the next book in the series right now.

All the feels!

I loved this book. Jeanine suffers from OCD and she feels like a freak. She has her own small tent, but only goes to her friends house and back, that's it. Belvaire is a visiting Masse, a king. He takes one look at her and that is it. He pursues her, but because she feels different she is afraid. The ending made my chest right and I wanted to cry for her. This book has all the feels!!!
